  1. #129 – Freedom In Christ

    2 december 2021 · 41 min

    Afspelen
Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley discuss Union with Christ, Trinitarianism, and Romans 8:1-18 Lees meer

    Questions Covered in This Episode:

What is the “therefore” there for?

    “In Christ Jesus”

    How am I declared righteous?

How do we reconcile the way that Spirit of Christ and Spirit in Christ are used? (V. 9)

How do we understand the Spirit of Christ also being the Spirit of the Father?

How is what Paul is saying here different from gnosticism? (V. 5-8, 12-18)

Is the doctrine of Union with Christ that we are in Christ or that He is in us? (V. 9-10)

    Discuss the doctrine of adoption.

    Helpful Definitions:

Existentially: In our lived experience of the world.

Union with Christ: God invites us to live in His home, and His home is Jesus. That is how we make our home with God, we enter into home with God in Jesus. The Spirit of God is the invitation to come into the home, the home is the Son of God Jesus Christ, and it is full of all the good things the Father has for His family and His children.

Divine Adoption: Playing out relationally of the concept of Union with Christ. You have a child relationship to the Father by virtue of the ontological relationship the Son has with the Father. What He possesses by right He gives to us by grace. What He has by nature He gives to us by adoption. That is the saving benefit of Union with Christ, everything that the Son has by nature and by right, He gives over to us in grace.

    Questions Covered in This Episode:

As we enter Romans 7, where is Paul in his line of argumentation?

What does Paul mean by “law”? What law have we been released from?

  10. #124 – Justified by Faith

    28 oktober 2021 · 33 min

    Afspelen
Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley look at Romans 5:1-11 and discuss justification by faith. Lees meer

    Questions Covered in This Episode:

    What is justification?

What does it mean to be justified “by faith?”

Why is peace with God a benefit to justification?

What does it mean to “rejoice in hope of the glory of God?”

Rejoicing in our sufferings (V. 3-5)?

Has there been a season of life that you walked through suffering and what did it produce in you?

Is there a more beautiful verse than Romans 5:6?

What is Paul trying to do in V. 7-11?

What is the kind of person Christ died for?

Discuss the phrase “shall we be saved.” Am I saved or will I be saved?

    Helpful Definitions:

Justification: To have God’s righteousness accounted to us. Because of what Jesus has done on the cross our sin was accounted to him and His righteousness is accounted to us.

Imputation: Jesus’s righteousness has been imputed (or given, or granted) to us through our faith in His Lordship.

Faith: Being able to say and confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Includes giving your whole self away to Jesus as King. The instrument of our salvation. Faith receives everything from the work of Christ and contributes nothing to it. A gift that God gives so that we can receive more of God’s gifts, namely, the grace of salvation. Faith does not actualize something, it is a belief in something that has already been actualized.

Our agreement, our affections, and our allegiance.

When we are justified by the blood of Christ, we are saved from sin’s penalty. As we are being sanctified, we are being saved from sin’s power. When we are glorified, we are finally and fully saved from sin's presence.

What did Irenaeus have to say about Paul’s Christology?

    Helpful Definitions:

Adam Christ Typology: Understood through the lens of Doctrine of Recapitulation.

Doctrine of Recapitulation: All things are summed up in Christ. There is a unity to the entire divine economy that is found in the person and work of Christ. Then we get a David name drop (V.6): What was David’s significance in Israel’s story? Why is invoking his name a big deal?

    Helpful Definitions:

Unmerited Gift: You cannot earn it, undeserved, or incongruent: doesn’t line up with what you have done, its disproportionate. Once we have received this grace that we do not deserve and we cannot earn it’s supposed to have an impact on us. Its unconditional but not without hope for impact or reciprocity.

Unconditional Gift: A gift given without any conditions.

Righteous -> Blessed: To have one’s lawless deeds forgiven, sins covered, and that the Lord will not count your sin against you.

  15. After The Fact: Luther and the Righteousness of God with Dr. Gregg Allison

    12 oktober 2021 · 7 min

    Afspelen
Kyle Worley is joined by Dr. Gregg Allison to answer the question, did Martin Luther have anything to say about the righteousness of God in Romans? Lees meer

    Questions Covered in This Episode:

Did Martin Luther have anything to say about the righteousness of God in Romans?

Outside of the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, was there anything that was happening at a linguistic or a theological level in Luther’s understanding of the concept that was the key to that discovery? How did that change happen?

    Helpful Definitions:

Justice of God: God’s wrath and condemnation towards sinners.

Righteousness of God: A gift that God gives to sinners who repent, confess Christ, turn to Christ through the gospel. A gift of perfect standing before God. God’s gift of the righteousness of Christ by which we can stand before him.

Justification: Divine declaration. We are no longer condemned or guilty, we are forgiven of our sins and the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ is attributed to us. So God when he sees us, sees us clothed in the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ.

The Sweet Exchange: Our sin is imputed to Christ, Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us.

    Guest Bio:

Dr. Gregg Allison is a professor of Christian Theology at Southern Seminary. Prior to joining the faculty of Southern, Dr. Allison was a professor at Western Seminary, and prior to that He served with campus crusade for Christ for 18 years, was a missionary in Italy and Switzerland. Dr. Allison is the author of numerous books including: Historical Theology: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine, Sojourners and Strangers: The Doctrine of the Church, and Roman Catholic Theology and Practice: An Evangelical Assessment. 16. #121 – The Righteousness of God with Dr. Michael Kruger

    7 oktober 2021 · 42 min

    Afspelen
Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley are joined by Dr. Michael Kruger to look at Romans 3:21-31 and discuss the righteousness of God. Lees meer

    Questions Covered in This Episode:

Dr. Kruger: How significant is the idea of the “righteousness of God” and can you give us a sense of its importance in current NT scholarship?

If you were teaching and preaching this, is it possible to say yes to both meanings of the righteousness of God?

What is the difference between what the reformers would have said about Paul and the new perspective?

Who would be the names that our listeners might know that hold the new perspective on Paul?

What does Paul mean that “the ROG has been manifested apart from the law?”

What does it mean to fall short of the glory of God?

    What is this word “propitiation?”

Divine forbearance - passing over former sins?

What is the “law of faith?”

    V. 31, what law is Paul talking about here?

Dr. Kruger: What commentaries on Romans have you found helpful?

    Helpful Definitions:

Greek Genitive: Denotes possession or ownership.

Righteousness of God: δικαιοσύνη Θεοῦ (dikaiosynē Theou)

    A. Is God righteous? God’s righteousness on display, His character being upheld, Is He faithful to His covenant?

    B. Is this something that God is giving? Is there a righteous status you can receive from Him?

Propitiation: Implying it to Jesus. To satisfy (soak up) all the wrath of God. In terms of what Christ has done, He has fully paid a price in such a way that all of God’s wrath has been fully absorbed by what Christ has done so that there is none left for you.

Law of works: Mosaic law keeping as a means to be justified.

Law of faith: You achieve a righteous status not by works but by trusting in Christ.

    Questions Covered in This Episode:

Why does Paul open up with this question?

What advantage did the Jews have?

    Does God keep his promises?

If you were to summarize verses 1-8 in a few sentences how would you say it?

But hold on, Jews aren’t better than the Greeks just because of this advantage (V. 9)?

The bad bad news (Rom. 3:10-18)...where does this come from?

Is this true of us? Or just the Jews and Gentiles Paul is addressing? Is it true of Christians before salvation or after salvation or both?

Let’s talk about total depravity and the doctrine of sin.

Who is the audience of the letter?

How do you see value as those who are in Christ on reflecting on our fallen state apart from Christ? How does that keep us in the fear of the Lord?

    Helpful Definitions:

Non posse non peccare: Not able not to sin.

What does “He will render to each one according to his works” mean (V. 6)?

The Gospel: Promised beforehand through prophets, the Holy Scriptures, concerning the Son of David, concerning the Son of God. Questions Covered in This Episode:

In the book of Proverbs, in times where wisdom is personified, is it fair to read that as if Christ himself is speaking or being described since he is the perfect embodiment of the wisdom of God? It seems the most obvious in chapters 1, 8, and 9. Are there any misinterpretations possible in seeing those passages purely as words of Christ?

Is some sort of ministry/biblical studies degree important/helpful for leaders in the local church? (Aside from the pastor.)

How does the book of Job fit in with the story of Genesis? Does it?

What is one intentional thing you have done with your young children where you really felt you saw fruit from it in later years?

Can you give some insight on Molinism and how that coincides with or goes against the Reformed position?

When I was a kid growing up in a Baptist church, it was always the pastor who baptized people. I have noticed that occasionally the pastors at other churches in our community will allow others to baptize people. I am just curious when that shift came and does the Bible have any specifics on who can baptize?

One of the things I appreciate so much about y'all is how unashamedly trinitarian you are and how unashamedly trinitarian you encourage Christians to be. It seems as if part of this is to view every act of God in the Bible as something in which the whole trinity is involved. While one person may be the primary agent, there is still involvement from the other two persons. So, my question along those lines is what was the work of the Holy Spirit at the crucifixion? Romans 8 talks about the Father giving up the son. John 10 and 1 John 3 talks about Jesus laying down his life for the glory of the Father, but there seems to be no mention of what the Spirit was doing or how He was acting in the crucifixion. How then do we see the crucifixion as an act of the entire trinity?
