Interviews With "Fjord" Star Renate Reinsve & Filmmaker Cristian Mungiu
4 november 2026 · 28 min
“Fjord” is a 2026 legal thriller family drama film written, directed, and co-produced by Cristian Mungiu. A co-production of Romania, France, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, it stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a conservative Romanian-Norwegian couple facing scrutiny after moving to the wife's progressive, remote Norwegian hometown. It is loosely inspired by the true story of the Bodnariu family (renamed Gheorghiu in the film), whose children were forcefully taken from them by the authorities in Norway. The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a 12-minute standing ovation and won the Palme d'Or, the François Chalais Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize, the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, and the Prix de la Citoyenneté. It received critical acclaim, with particular praise for its performances and screenplay, and has been selected as the Romanian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. Reinsve was kind enough to spend some time speaking with Nadia Dalimonte, while Mungiu spoke with Cody Dericks about his work and experience making the film, which you can watch or listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from NEON. Thank you, and enjoy! Lees meer

"Clayface"
24 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 18 min
For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Cody Dericks, Lauren LaMagna, and Will Mavity join me to discuss James Gunn's latest DC film, "Clayface," starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan. Directed by James Watkins (The American remake of "Speak No Evil") and co-written by Mike Flanagan ("Doctor Sleep") and Hossein Amini ("The Snowman"), it is the third film in the DC Universe (DCU) that follows an actor who turns to a scientist to restore his body to his former look after becoming disfigured by a mobster. A standalone villain origin story that leans into body horror on a smaller budget than other DC films, many were excited to catch it over the Halloween spooky season. What did we think of it though? Please tune in, either on video or audio only, as we discuss the story, performances, makeup and gore effects, visual effects, its Oscar prospects, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Interview With "Wildwood" Director & LAIKA Studios CEO Travis Knight
22 oktober 2026 · 1 uur
"Wildwood" is a 2026 American stop-motion animated fantasy film co-produced and directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, based on Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis's 2011 novel. Produced by LAIKA studios, the film stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Len Cariou, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits, and Richard E. Grant. In the film, a teenage girl named Prue (Lee) and her classmate Curtis (Tremblay) enter an enchanted forest to search for her infant brother after he is abducted. They find a manor and learn about a coming war from a mysterious woman who tragically lost her son. Development began in September 2011, just weeks after the release of Meloy's novel, when LAIKA announced plans to adapt it as an animated feature. Production was confirmed in September 2021, with Knight directing and co-producing with Arianne Sutner, and Butler writing the script. The feature was produced at LAIKA's studio facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, with Caleb Deschanel as cinematographer. With a theatrical runtime of 131 minutes, the film is the longest stop-motion-animated film and, in terms of overall craftsmanship, the biggest achievement in stop-motion animation history for sheer scale and difficulty. The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, where critics widely acclaimed it as not only the best animated film of the year, but the best to ever come out of LAIKA Studios. Knight was kind enough to lend us an hour of his time as he came into the studio and spoke with us about what drew him to Colin Meloy's novel, the painstaking work that goes into the art of stop-motion, his feelings on the current state of animation, what is next for himself and LAIKA Studios, what winning an Oscar would mean to him, and more, which you can watch or listen to below. Please be sure to check out "Wildwood," which will be released in theaters by Fathom En… Lees meer

For this week's second podcast review, Amy Kim, Josh Parham, Giovanni Lago, Daniel Howat, and Will Mavity join me to review and discuss the documentary film from directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, "You Can See Everything." The nearly three-hour film follows Elizabeth Holmes, founder of the defunct health technology company Theranos, and her partner, Billy Evans, who invite the filmmakers and their crew to document them in the weeks before Holmes begins serving a United States federal prison sentence for defrauding investors. The film premiered as a secret screening at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival, where critics praised it widely, and it has been a commercial box-office success. What did we think of it? Please tune in, video or audio only, as we discuss the direction, the shocking twists and surprises within the story, that one performance everyone can't stop talking about even though, to protect spoilers, they probably shouldn't be talking about it, the editing, cinematography, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. For this week's third podcast review, Ema Sasic, Dan Bayer, and Nadia Dalimonte join me to discuss Ang Lee's 1995 film "Sense And Sensibility," written and starring Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, and featuring Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, members of a wealthy English landed-gentry family, as they face sudden destitution. They are forced to seek financial security through marriage. A commercial success that earned $135 million worldwide, the film received overwhelmingly positive reviews and many accolades, including three awards and eleven nominations at the 1995 British Academy Film Awards. It earned seven Academy Awards nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Actress. Thompson won Best Adapted Screenplay, becoming the only person to win Academy Awards for both acting and screenwriting. The film contributed to a resurgence in popularity for Austen's works, and has led to many more productions in similar genres. It continues to be recognized as one of the best Austen adaptations of all time. What do we think of it 31 years after its release, with the new adaptation hitting theaters this weekend? 12 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 45 min
For Episode 511 of the Next Best Picture Podcast, I am joined by Katie Johnson, Dan Bayer, and Larry Fried. This week, we're discussing the end of the New York Film Festival (NYFF), including the world premieres of "Artificial" and "14th," as well as high-profile screenings of "Fjord," "The Debut," and more! For this week's NBP poll question, to mark the end of the "big four" film festivals (Venice, Telluride, TIFF and NYFF), we're asking everyone, "Which Film Do You Think Will Be The Next Best Picture Oscar Winner?" And we reveal the winner of last week's NBP poll, where we asked everyone, for the merger of Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures into Skydance, "Which Is Your Favorite Warner Bros. Best Picture Nominee?" We also share our reactions to the trailers for "The Exorcist: Martyrs," "Godzilla Minus Zero," "Heartland," and "La Gradiva." We are still answering your fan-submitted questions, but we'll now release our answers separately the next day in a new show called Mailbag Monday. So stay tuned for that and many other updates from Next Best Picture as this year's awards season continues. Thank you all for listening, subscribing, and supporting us. Enjoy! Lees meer

"The Social Reckoning"
10 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 12 min
For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic and Dan Bayer join me to review and discuss the latest film from Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, "The Social Reckoning," starring Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong. A companion piece to 2010's "The Social Network," where that film was about the rise of Facebook, this film is about the Facebook we use today and how it got us to where we are now, dramatizing, the 2021 Facebook leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen and investigative reporter Jeff Horwitz. What did we think of it? Please tune in, either on video or audio only, as we discuss the story, Sorkin's writing and direction, the performances, the stylistic differences from David Fincher's acclaimed film, its Oscar prospects, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. "Digger"
3 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 57 min
For this week's main podcast review, Megan Lachinski, Josh Parham, Cody Dericks, and Tom O'Brien join me to review and discuss the latest film from four-time Academy Award winner Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Digger," starring Tom Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg & Jesse Plemons. The final film released by Warner Bros. after 103 years as an independent studio, Iñárritu's latest may also be his and the studio's most timely, given where we are heading as a society, and it certainly isn't short on bold storytelling from a filmmaker unafraid to take risks. That risk comes with split opinions, as this environmental comedy has divided audiences and critics, with recent marketing asking everyone to decide for themselves whether this is a misfire from Iñárritu or a banger that will stand the test of time. Where do we fall on it? Please tune in, either on video or audio only, as we discuss the story, its shocking twist, the performances, most notably from Tom Cruise, Iñárritu's direction, the craft of the cinematography by three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki, the creative production design, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. What's the truth? You decide. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Lees meer

"Forgotten Island"
26 september 2026 · 54 min
For this week's main podcast review, Josh Parham joins me to review and discuss the latest film from "Puss In Boots: The Last Wish" Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, "Forgotten Island," starring H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, Ronny Chieng, Kevin McCann, and Lea Salonga. Steeped within Philippine mythology and bursting with creativity for its animation, this highly unique and original animated film is unfortunately struggling at the box-office but has received acclaim for its story, performances, visual style, and music. Did we feel the same way? Why are audiences not turning out for this? Will it be an Oscar contender for Best Animated Feature Film? Interviews With "Primetime" Stars Skyler Gisondo, Merritt Wever & Director Lance Oppenheim
25 september 2026 · 35 min
"Primetime" is a 2026 American psychological crime thriller film directed by Lance Oppenheim in his narrative feature film debut. Based on the 2007 Esquire article "Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die," the film follows the production of the reality television series "To Catch a Predator." Robert Pattinson stars as series host Chris Hansen and also serves as a producer with Merritt Wever (Andie Bender, Hansen's producer at Dateline NBC, a fictional composite of producers on the show who prioritizes its ratings above all else), Skyler Gisondo (Dan Plumb, a young aspiring actor hired for the show's sting operations), and Phoebe Bridgers (Del Harvey, a young decoy who played both boys and girls on the show) in supporting roles. The film premiered in the main competition of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion and received positive reviews for Pattinson, Gisondo, and Wever's performances, Oppenheim's direction, the cinematography, and editing. Oppenheim, Gisondo, and Wever were all kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can watch or listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from A24. Thank you, and enjoy! Lees meer
