"Godzilla Minus One"
6 februari 2024 · 23 min
As we attempt to catch up with all of the Oscar-nominated films, one that escaped our regular podcast schedule upon its theatrical release here in the U.S. was Takashi Yamazaki's critically acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One" starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Yuki Yamada & Kuranosuke Sasaki. With many calling it the best Godzilla film ever made, the Japanese film has been an international success with crossover appeal and has received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. What did we think of the story, the characters and performances, the action sequences and visual effects, and, of course, how one of cinema's most iconic figures was presented to a modern-day audience? Tune in as I'm joined by Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Tom O'Brien, and returning guest Kevin Lee to discuss these points and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review! Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! Lees meer

"Memento"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Lees meer
For our latest throwback review, we remember the film that substantially accelerated Christopher Nolan's career, his innovative, indie breakout and Oscar-nominated hit film "Memento" starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Ann Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Mark Boone Junior, Stephen Tobolowsky, Harriet Sansom Smith, Larry Holden & Callum Keith Rennie. Based on a short story credited to his brother Jonathan Nolan, the film was highly praised at the time of its release for its creative narrative structure, which has continued to mesmerize audiences over twenty years after its release. Many of the recurring themes in Nolan's work and stylistic choices can be traced back to this film, which broke new ground and ushered in a new era of his filmmaking career, which led to a partnership with Warner Bros. With the success of "Oppenheimer," similar featuring black and white sequences and an unconventional narrative structure, find out what Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Brendan Hodges and I had to say about the film's writing, direction, performances, awards season run and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review! Thank you for all your support, and enjoy!

Today, we are reviewing the latest film from Ava DuVernay, "Origin," starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nick Offerman & Blair Underwood. Making its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion, the dramatic adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson's life and novel "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" was one of 2023's most unique and powerful films. 14 januari 2024 · 3 uur 55 min
For Episode 377, I am joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Cody Dericks, Daniel Howat & Giovanni Lago. It's a massive episode this week! Because Cody and I will be at Sundance starting Wednesday this week, we're delivering our final Oscar nomination predictions earlier than expected to you all following the nominations for PGA, DGA, and SAG, but without the final BAFTA nominations. Hopefully, our over-analysis of each Oscar category is enough to overcome this roadblock, and you'll enjoy listening to us argue, debate, and advocate for who we think will be nominated on January 23rd. We also go over the polls, give our reactions to the trailer for "Abigail," answer some of your fan-submitted questions (many questions are indirectly answered in our epic conversation), and more! Thank you all for your continued support. We hope you enjoy this week's episode, and we'll see you again after the Oscar nominations! Lees meer

11 januari 2024 · 1 uur 40 min
"Poor Things" had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion and received some of the best reviews for a Yorgos Lanthimos film. It's a technical marvel in almost every regard, and throughout this entire awards season, we've conducted several interviews with the team involved in the making of the Golden Globe award-winning film from nearly all aspects of production. First up, we have my interview with the film's producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, then we have my interview with Costume Designer Holly Waddington, then we have Dan Bayer's interview with Production Designers James Price and Shona Heath, and then we go back to me with Hair, Makeup & Prosthetics Designer Nadia Stacey, then we head back to Bayer and his interview with the film's Composer Jerskin Fendrix and we finally conclude with my conversation with Cinematographer Robbie Ryan. We hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at the film. Please check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Searchlight Pictures and is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards. Thank you! Lees meer

A Behind The Scenes Look At "All Of Us Strangers"
28 december 2023 · 1 uur 9 min
"All Of Us Strangers" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, where it received universally positive reviews for its beautifully intimate story of a middle-aged gay man reconciling with the past trauma of losing his parents at a young age, all trying to form a new connection with his neighbor in a mostly empty high-rise apartment building. The Next Best Picture team conducted a series of interviews from the time of its world premiere, through its screening at the New York Film Festival, all the way up until its theatrical release with several people involved in making the film. First, we have Dan Bayer's interview with director and writer Andrew Haigh, followed by my interview with the film's composer, Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch. We then hear Ema Sasic's interview with actress Claire Foy and Bayer's interview with star Andrew Scott. Then we return to me again for my interview with cinematographer Jamie D. Ramsay, and we end everything with Sasic speaking with actor Jamie Bell. Each one has something unique to say, and all of them were kind enough to lend us their time to talk about this special film, which you can listen to below. For our latest throwback review, we reminisce and celebrate the 20th-anniversary of the third and final part in Academy Award-winner Peter Jackson's groundbreaking fantasy trilogy, "The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King," starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Billy Boyd Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Karl Urban, John Noble, Andy Serkis, Ian Holm & Sean Bean. With expectations sky-high following the success of "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers," Jackson and his team broke box-office records, garnered universal acclaim, and tied with "Ben Our" and "Titanic" with the most Academy Awards ever bestowed upon a single film, sweeping all eleven categories it was nominated for. Join us for our final journey back to Middle Earth as I, Alyssa Christian, and guests JD Duran (from InSession Film) and Aaron White (from Feelin' Film) discuss the epic conclusion to the story, the performances, battle scenes, visual effects, and whether or not the multiple "endings" were warranted for such a sprawling story. We also discuss its historic awards season run and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review! Thank you for all your support, and enjoy!

Today, we are reviewing the second directorial effort from Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper with "Maestro," starring Cooper, Carey Mulligan, Sarah Silverman, Matt Bomer, Josh Hamilton & Maya Hawke.
