Because here’s the problem: most humans can’t even define consciousness, yet everyone has a strong opinion about whether AI can have it. So I used this moment as a mirror—if we want to judge AI, we’re forced to get serious about what consciousness actually is.
I’ve been studying this for years, and I shared the framework I keep coming back to:Information → Intelligence → Consciousness.
Meaning: consciousness can be both fundamental and emergent. But if it emerges, then it’s not crazy to think an advanced intelligence system could begin showing early signs of it.
