BENJAMIN IN CONVERSATION: with Izhar Lifshitz, son of Oded, 83 and Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7th

This interview of Izhar Lifshitz took place in front of a live audience of US military cadets, in Poland. The delegates had traveled to Poland as part of the annual Israel Strategy & Policy (I-SAP) tour, 2024, a flagship initiative of The MirYam Institute. All of the delegates will serve as officers in the U.S army, navy, air-force and marine corps.
Izhar Lifshitz is the son of the oldest Israeli hostage in Gaza - still presumed to be alive - Oded Lifshitz (83).
On October 7th, both Izhar's parents, Oded and Yocheved (85), were kidnapped by Hamas. Yocheved was released shortly thereafter and returned to Israel, where she gave an impromptu press conference describing the conditions of her captivity, the tunnels in which she was kept and the brutality of the way in which Hamas transported her from her home in Israel into the Gaza Strip.
Since October 7th, Yocheved has lived on without her husband and Izhar has lived on without his father. All that is known about Oded Lifshitz is that he was injured when kidnapped, that he suffers from high blood pressure, and that he is in poor physical condition.
In this incredibly candid discussion, Izhar outlines his motivations for keeping going, his assessment of the fate of his father and - somehow - he still manages to maintain his optimism, sense of humor and resolve.

Aviram tells me about the impact Almog's captivity is having on Orit, Almog's mother, and on him, as well as the initiatives the family are undertaking to maintain and generate awareness about Almog's plight.

Prof. Bell and I began by discussing the ICJ ruling in response to the case brought by South Africa against Israel, the threat of prosecution attempts of IDF soldiers under universal jurisdiction and the powers of enforcement held by the ICJ and the ICC. We went on to talk about the revelations that at least twelve members of UNRWA had been shown to have played a direct role in the Hamas massacre of October 7th.
Thereafter, I spoke to Colonel Hacham and Yaakov about the ongoing progress of the IDF inside Gaza, Egypt's resistance to the IDF holding the Rafah crossing in any long term security arrangement, as well as the security perimeter the IDF is establishing around the perimeter of the Strip.

In this episode of the podcast, I sit down to interview Iris Haim, mother of Yotam Haim Z"L, who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7th, 2023, and killed by IDF soldiers on December 15th, 2023, as the result of a horrific operational miscalculation. Lees meer
On October 7th, 2023, during the murderous massacre against Israel launched by Hamas, Iris's son, Yotam, was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, a community located adjacent to the Gaza Strip.
He was 28 years old.
From that point onward, Yotam was held in captivity by Hamas and Iris dedicated herself to campaigning for his release and for the release of all of the hostages, taking her message to parliaments, governments and audiences throughout the English speaking world - from Australia to the United Kingdom.
Uniquely, Iris also became a leading Israeli voice on the subject of unity, love and support for the Israeli government and the soldiers of the IDF at this time.
Rapidly rising to become an opinion leader and a symbol of hope domestically, Iris refused to countenance any calls for division or for internecine fighting within the Jewish state; all the while, Yotam, her son, remained in captivity.
On December 7th, 2023, Yotam, together with two other hostages, emerged from where they were being held inside Gaza. Tragically, all three of the hostages were fired upon and killed by members of the Israel Defense Forces, who were operating inside the Gaza Strip.
Incredibly, upon learning about this awful series of events, Iris sent a voice note to the soldiers who had killed her son, telling them that she loved them, supported them, and that she and her family invited them to visit her home. Those soldiers did so, and they informed Iris that they had ceased functioning as a result of the tragic miscalculation, but that having received her words and visited with her, they were able to begin returning to service.

The couple, then without children, wanted to support the small community. They fell in love with the place and stayed. A year ago, they bought a house there.

Episode 36 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Benjamin Anthony, Co-Founder of the Miryam Institute.
Chuck and Benjamin begin by discussing the Oslo Accords. Chuck explains that Oslo was merely a framework agreement, which set out the parameters of a five-year period of negotiations designed to bring about a final peace agreement, but without specifying its nature. Oslo was thus silent about a possible Palestinian state and the final status of Jerusalem, borders, settlements and refugees.
Chuck believes Oslo was a mixture of success and failure. Benjamin opposes any deal that might include land for peace and compromise on Jerusalem and believes that other options exist.
They then turn to a discussion of the topics raised in the meeting between Biden and Netanyahu (Saudi Arabia, Iran, normalization, judicial reform, 2 states) and between Netanyahu and Turkish President Erdogan and they discuss the painful downturn in Israeli ties with Turkey since Erdogan came to power.

In this episode, Chuck and Benjamin discuss the passing of former Director of the Mossad Shabtai Shavit, who died this week during a vacation in Italy. They analyze his view that the Iranian nuclear weapons program may or may not be intended for actual use by Iran and discuss the possibility of nuclear terrorism.
Benjamin expresses his fundamental opposition to any peace agreements predicated upon Israeli territorial concessions and asserts that agreements should be based on the principle of peace for peace, not land. Chuck is willing to consider land for peace, but acknowledges that his support for a deal with Syria in 2000 was mistaken.
They then discuss the dangers of the Saudi demand that the US accede to their having an enrichment capability. Chuck believes that a sufficient regime of inspections can be established.

In this episode, Chuck and Benjamin discuss the pros and cons of a possible US-Israeli defense treaty, a potential side product of the US-Israeli-Saudi normalization deal now under discussion. Chuck describes the conditions under which a treaty such as this would be favorable for Israel, although he is in a minority view among Israeli defense officials, Benjamin leans more towards the majority view, raising concerns about the future deployment of IDF forces abroad.
They also briefly touch on the assassination of the head of the Russian Wagner Force, Yevgeny Prigozhin and the first Republican presidential debate. Benjamin expresses concern over GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s call for ending military aid to Israel when the current 10-year package expires in 2028. Chuck shares his deep concern, believing that the relationship with the US is critical to Israel’s national security. The two disagree on the background to statements such as Ramaswamy's and similar ones by Democratic candidates. Benjamin attributes this primarily to anti-Semitism, particularly on campus. Chuck to Israel’s policies regarding the West Bank.

In this episode, Chuck and Benjamin conduct an in-depth discussion of a possible Israeli-Saudi normalization deal, under US aegis. According to the emerging contours of the agreement, Israel would have to make major concessions on the Palestinian issue and the US would have to accede to Saudi demands for a defense treaty, civilian nuclear program and sales of advanced weapons.
Benjamin opposes concessions on Israel’s territorial birthright as the price of a deal, believes that normalization with the Saudis should simply be in exchange for normalization, and that it is not critical for Israeli purposes. Chuck believes that normalization would constitute an historic change in Israel’s strategic circumstances. Since Chuck supports separation from the Palestinians in any event, his concerns focus on the proposed civil nuclear program, which should be made contingent on a strong inspections mechanism.

In this episode, Chuck and Benjamin continue their discussion of the ongoing crisis in Israel centering around the judicial overhaul process. Following the Knesset decision to nullify the “reasonability” criteria by which the Supreme Court has heretofore weighed the cases before it, both Chuck and Benjamin are deeply concerned by the dire effects of the situation on the cohesion of the IDF and defense establishment as a whole. Benjamin fervently opposes the injection of the IDF into the protest movement. Chuck has a different opinion.
They also conduct an in-depth discussion of the dramatic report by NY Times columnist, Tom Friedman, that President Biden is seeking to broker normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia - with heavy terms and conditions attached. Chuck is supportive of such a deal. Benjamin is far more reserved and opposes the Palestinian dimension that would accompany any normalization.

In this episode, in which Benjamin succeeds Danny Ayalon as Chuck’s interlocutor, they begin by extending their deep appreciation to Danny for his participation to date. Danny is moving on to new and better pursuits and Chuck and Benjamin wish him every success. It has been a pleasure working with him.
Chuck and Benjamin then turned to the ongoing crisis over the judicial reform process, which has reached another turning point with the proposed nullification of the “reasonability” criteria by which the Supreme Court has heretofore weighed the cases before it. Both Chuck and Benjamin agree that the reform process was entirely unnecessary, is tearing Israeli society and the IDF apart and has weakened Israel in the eyes of its adversaries. They disagree regarding its causes. Chuck believes Netanyahu’s legal considerations motivated it, Benjamin disagrees. They also disagree over the growing threat to serve by reservists in elite IDF units, should the legislation actually go through. Although both find this highly problematic and are concerned precedent set, Chuck’s thinking has changed and he is now supportive of it, whereas Benjamin believes there is no justification whatsoever.
They then conduct an in-depth discussion of developments in the Palestinian area, including the reasons for the recent two-day operation in Jenin, its consequences and causes. Chuck continues to believe that there is no realistic alternative to a separation between the two peoples, presumably through a two-state solution, Benjamin does not believe that this is possible and seeks alternatives.

Yaakov described his feelings as a father to young children, particularly in the aftermath of a direct strike by Palestinian Islamic Jihad on his hometown of Rehovot in central Israel - a strike that killed an 87 year old woman and injured others.
He and I strongly disagree on certain aspects of the operation, despite our shared admiration for the targeted killings of Palestinian Islamic Jihad leadership.
Time will tell which of our respective assessments is correct, if either one is. For now, we are pleased to be the beneficiaries of peace and quiet beneath the skies of Israel.

During that discussion, moderated by Miryam Institute in-house analyst, Yaakov Lappin, Benjamin and Rozita reflected upon their recollections of service and the sacrifices made by the members of the IDF. They also weighed in on the importance of Yom Hazikaron / Israel Remembrance day transcending the regrettable political discourse currently engulfing the Israel conversation, so that Israelis are able to mourn those loved ones lost to them, in the total absence of undue politicization and and political grandstanding. Israel Remembrance Day is a day for the bereaved to solemnly reflect upon the Israeli victims of terror, and the servicemembers who fell in defense of the one and only Jewish state. Anything that detracts from that, must be shunned and banished from remembrance ceremonies.

General Tamir is a battlefield legend within the Israel Defense Forces. He formerly served as the Commander of the elite EGOZ unit, Commander of the Golani Infantry Brigade and the Commander of the IDF Southern Command.

On Sunday, March 5th, Benjamin Anthony, Co-Founder of The MirYam Institute, sat down to interview Simcha Rothman in the Knesset in front of a group of 23 active officers of the U.S. Army, brought to Israel on the annual MirYam Institute Israel Strategy & Policy tour (I-SAP). Lees meer
MK Rothman currently serves as the Chair of the Constitution, Law & Justice Knesset committee and is the architect of the judicial reform currently at the heart of the Israeli conversation.
MK Rothman answered questions on why he was leading the effort for judicial reform, why he assigns urgency to the reform he is leading, whether or not these reforms leave Israel and members of the IDF exposed to prosecution in international legal forums, the implications of the reforms for Prime Minister Netanyahu and whether the reforms he seeks to implement are worth the massive civil unrest and demonstrations taking place throughout much of Israel in direct opposition to the changes he seeks to bring about.
Following the initial long form interview, MK Rothman took questions from the officers.

Brigadier General Chiko Tamir is something of a battlefield legend in the Israeli Defense Forces.
He is the former commander of the IDF’s vaunted Golani Brigade and served as commander of the IDF’s Gaza division, participating in seminal battles inside the Gaza Strip.
As a young officer, he was tasked with establishing the EGOZ unit of the IDF, one of the most elite combat units anywhere in the world, with the specific goal of transforming Israel’s posture from reactive to proactive against Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon.
During the Second Itifada, Chiko personally coordinated with Ariel Sharon in order to beat back the terrorism and suicide bombing emanating from the West Bank.
Today, he retains responsibility for readying IDF reservists for future conflicts inside Gaza.
He joined The MirYam Institute on the east coast for a lecture series under our auspices that included presentations on Israel's national security at the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts, as well as several presentations to community leaders in Massachusetts and New York.
