Educating an Architect: A Conversation with Luca Mezzalira
2 november 2026 · 1 uur 7 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast Michael Stiefel spoke to Luca Mezzalira about software architecture as a socio-technical discipline that balances technological design with an organization's social and managerial context. They explored how architectural choices must be adapted to a company's unique culture and team structure rather than relying blindly on universal best practices, noting that friction within a system serves as critical feedback regarding team and technical alignment. Since placing a dedicated architect on every team is unworkable, the discussion highlighted a shift toward an enablement mindset. Architects should be encouraged to act as coaches who empower developers to make decentralized decisions by establishing clear system guardrails and architectural fitness functions. Lees meer
The best of architectural education comes from collaborative study and shared experiences rather than traditional lectures, allowing knowledge to organically evolve over time. As AI is increasingly used within systems, the architect must identify the areas of high volatility that require the careful supervision and guidance of experienced engineers, and the generic domains where delegation to AI agents can be more safely done.

What Does It Really Mean To Program With AI: A Conversation with Joy Ebertz
12 oktober 2026 · 45 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast, Michael Stiefel spoke to Joy Ebertz about how the use of artificial intelligence is changing the way architects and developers do their jobs. Focusing on the long term success of the business is one of the most neglected tasks of an architect. This task becomes particularly important as the nature of artificial intelligence changes the landscape of software development. Architects must be especially aware of requirements and their inherent ambiguity. More than ever, they must be expert at explaining technology to the business people, and the business to the technology people. On the flip side, goals must be clearly explained to AI agents, and tests must be unambiguously written. Industry practice is uncertain on how to incorporate changes due to bug reports or new requirements. Should it be done incrementally, or should the module’s or application’s code base be regenerated? This is especially challenging in existing systems, especially old ones where nobody knows what the real requirements were. Unambiguous requirements definition may turn out to be the gating factor in AI driven software development because code reviews seem not to be effective, and verification of the AI work is a great burden. The AI Revolution Fails Without Psychological Safety For Developers: A Conversation with Erin Doyle
28 september 2026 · 55 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast, Michael Stiefel spoke to Erin Doyle about how artificial intelligence tools are transforming the software development process, and how they are affecting software engineers. Architecture skills are now critical because engineers need to understand how to build systems and handle the constraints and associated ambiguity in the requirements. At the same time, given the rapid change both in the nature of the AI tools, and the amount of code they can produce which can overwhelm developers, psychological safety becomes essential for successful AI adoption. Teams need a secure, non-judgmental environment to share their successes, admit failures, ask for help, and express skepticism. Lees meer
Industry lacks a plan to train junior engineers because AI is taking over the tasks they were traditionally trained on, and university education is not adequate preparation for this new reality. The conversation concluded by discussing how software developers and organizations must retain complete ownership and assume full liability for the output generated by AI tools. To manage this, there is an urgent need to develop advanced verification and telemetry tools that can support the review process.

How Will We Train Developers If AI Does the Routine Work: A Conversation with Scott Hanselman
14 september 2026 · 37 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast Michael Stiefel spoke to Scott Hanselman about developing new software engineers when artificial intelligence agents are doing most of the work on which junior developers were trained. Hanselman suggests the software industry should adopt a preceptorship model similar to the nursing profession. Under this model, the industry needs preceptors whose sole job is to train new engineers, and these preceptors would be evaluated on how well they train people rather than how much code they ship. The use of AI agents requires experienced engineers because while they are capable of generating software features, they perform poorly at software architecture because they often miss the larger context. In addition, engineers must maintain oversight of artificial intelligence tools by acting as reviewers and coordinators to ensure that human judgment remains central to the development process. Lees meer
The conversation then broadened to discuss the environment in which agentic AI should be used. When businesses prioritize short term, hyper-optimization, they neglect the longer term investments in human capital and mentorship which will make it impossible to cultivate future senior talent. Beyond that, Hanselman addressed the sociological impacts of modern development, observing that the intersection of remote work, social media, and artificial intelligence severely isolates developers. To counter this isolation and ensure healthy growth, intentional human connection and in-person interactions are vital for the next generation of users and developers of technology.

Will Agentic AI Bring Fantasia’s Sorcerer's Apprentice to Life?: A Conversation with Tracy Bannon
17 augustus 2026 · 50 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast, Michael Stiefel spoke to Tracy Bannon about the role of artificial intelligence in software and the attendant risks in the areas of security, software development, and society at large. While it might be reasonable to assume a certain amount of trust within a software ecosystem, the risks escalate when the boundary between two software ecosystems is crossed. Bannon emphasized that the discovery and exploitation of software vulnerabilities by AI is not a new issue, but it is just part of the evolution of cybersecurity threats. The discussion then continued to highlight that the traditional software development process was designed for humans. What the SDLC looks like in a world of agentic development has yet to be determined. Among the many challenges is testing an agent that is non-deterministic and whose behavior changes as it is tested, and reinitializing the test environment at the appropriate time. Lees meer
The use of AI agents has imposed a tremendous cognitive load on software professionals because they must review the massive amount of code and documents that an AI agent can generate. For both software professionals, and the public at large, the overreliance on artificial intelligence is leading to diminishing human skills, especially in complex domains. The question is - are we outsourcing our intelligence to automated models?

While AI can be very effective for writing code, building internal tools, and automating tasks, experienced engineers still need to validate tests, review outputs, establish clear architectural guidelines, and demand that the AI agents be hypercritical of their own work. With the focus on AI software development, architectural skills are at a premium. Talented individuals that demonstrate architectural skills need to be found and sponsored.

Spite-Driven Engineering: A New Blueprint for Cloud Security in the AI Native Era
6 juli 2026 · 41 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this episode, Alex Zenla (CTO/Co-founder, Edera) challenges the "laissez-faire" attitude toward modern infrastructure. She promotes "spite-driven development", building software to solve genuine technical pain points rather than passively accepting flawed abstractions, as a philosophy of improving the world of software. The discussion touches on the fragility of the current cloud-native stack, the security risks of multi-tenant Linux kernels, and the inefficiency of repurposing consumer-grade GPUs for AI workloads. Zenla also offers a pragmatic framework for the "AI-native" engineer: treat LLMs as symbiotic assistants for deep learning, not replacements for system-level expertise. Lees meer

How eBPF Empowers Developers to Observe Inside the Linux Kernel in a Safe and Unintrusive Way
22 juni 2026 · 44 min
Beluister deze afleveringDaniel Finneran explores how eBPF has evolved far beyond its roots in packet filtering into a robust, safe way to extend the Linux kernel. He explains how the eBPF "verifier", the security guardrail, enables implementation of deep observability and networking without the risks of traditional kernel modules or the slow upstreaming process. He touches on tools like Tetragon that leverage eBPF for "front-foot" security enforcement, proactively intercepting threats such as buffer overflows before they execute, while providing visibility into file systems and drivers without intrusive instrumentation. Requirements Analysis for Architects: A Conversation with Sonya Natanzon
1 juni 2026 · 42 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast Michael Stiefel spoke to Sonya Natanzon about the intersection of technical and social aspects of software architecture. Understanding the business and how a company operates is more important than the specific technologies used. Effective requirements analysis requires focusing on problems to be solved that describe good and bad outcomes, rather than statements of need or solution statements. Embracing constraints enable architects to narrow down the available options, which makes designing the system architecture much easier. Lees meer
It is often better to use techniques from approaches like Domain-Driven Design or Event Storming without formally introducing the methodology to the team. This will increase their effectiveness by reducing people's natural resistance to formal methods. The future of training new engineers will come from their ability to explain and review code, and learning how to fix broken systems.

Context is the Key to the Agentic Architecture Revolution: A Conversation with Baruch Sadogursky
18 mei 2026 · 52 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast Michael Stiefel spoke to Baruch Sadogursky about software architecture in the age of agentic AI. Large Language Models can function, albeit stochastically, as reasoning machines capable of interpreting human ambiguity. With the appropriate rigorous context artifacts to control the LLM’s reasoning, software specifications can become the source of truth, while the code becomes a disposable intermediate language. These context artifacts are managed through an engineering discipline, context engineering. Unlike prompt engineering which Sadogursky likened to “voodoo incantations”, context engineering utilizes artifacts such as skills, rules, scripts, feedback, and rigorous evaluation to provide the models with clear intent on what code to write. AI Agents will ask clarifying questions to the architects and clients until the requirements are fully understood. This allows a massive “shift left” to evaluate code quality before it is even written. Testing now validates the accuracy of the specifications. Lees meer
Humans are still responsible for determining the correctness of the requirements by providing the proper context, and validating the final results. Since changes over the course of time will occur, resulting in the regeneration of the code from the specifications, microservices is the best architectural paradigm to use given the current limitations on context windows for LLMs. Orchestration of the services is then done by a human architect to create the application. The architect is also responsible for managing the emergent properties of the system.

Engineering Stable, Secure and Scalable Platforms: A Conversation with Matthew Liste
20 april 2026 · 57 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast Michael Stiefel spoke to Matthew Liste about building and managing software platforms. Platform services act as the basis for application development, and must always be stable, secure, and scalable. Scaling these systems is particularly difficult because unknown resource contention often causes them to break. Using customer journeys, one can pinpoint the places where the system is particularly at risk. Platform engineering also requires managing limited resources, and making difficult tradeoffs about which functionality should be implemented. Lees meer
The discussion also highlighted how artificial intelligence can increase the speed of development and thus increase risk, and how it interferes with the development of junior engineers who typically learn from basic tasks that now can be done by artificial intelligence. Nonetheless, platform engineering is still responsible for maintaining the stability, security, and scalability of the platform.

Failure As a Means to Build Resilient Software Systems: A Conversation with Lorin Hochstein
31 maart 2026 · 52 min
Beluister deze afleveringIn this podcast Michael Stiefel spoke to Lorin Hochstein about how real-world failures provide insight into how software systems actually work. Our first topic was understanding that while automated fault injection tools can introduce basic robustness into a system, they cannot replicate the understanding that comes from mitigating complicated software failures in the real world. We then pondered how do we get this information to software architects so that they can learn from failure. Ironically, in reliable systems, adding more reliability can often lead to complexity which can lead to new failures. We often focus on making our systems robust against known failure patterns, but we have not learnt how to make software systems resilient to unknown failure modes, or failures due to changes in the external world or the evolving system design. Agentic Systems Without Chaos: Early Operating Models for Autonomous Agents
25 maart 2026 · 55 min
Beluister deze afleveringAre you ready for your new non-deterministic co-workers?
Autonomous agents promise to help build, operate, and run software systems, but they can also be unpredictable, chaotic, and difficult to control without the right operating model. In this episode of Next Generation Architecture Playbook, Shweta Vohra and Joseph Stein explore what changes when software systems start planning, acting, and making decisions on their own. The conversation distinguishes truly agentic use cases from traditional automation and looks at how architects and engineers should think about boundaries, orchestration, and system design in this new environment. Lees meerThe episode also explores the practical realities organisations face early in adoption. These include emerging risks such as prompt injection and tool misuse, the growing need for stronger observability and explainability, and how human-in-the-loop models fit into autonomous workflows. Joseph shares lessons from building a centralised AI platform used across multiple teams and products, including the unexpected operational challenges that arise when internal adoption accelerates quickly. The discussion offers a grounded look at how enterprises can experiment with agentic systems while keeping control over risk, cost, and operational complexity.

AI Autonomy Is Redefining Architecture: Boundaries Now Matter Most
4 maart 2026 · 52 min
Beluister deze afleveringThis conversation explores why generative AI is not just another automation layer but a shift into autonomy. The key idea is that we cannot retrofit AI into old procedural workflows and expect it to behave. Once autonomy is introduced, systems will drift, show emergent behaviour, and act in ways we did not explicitly script. The real architectural shift is not about controlling every step, but about defining clear boundaries. Instead of telling AI exactly how to do the work, we must define what it cannot do, what it is allowed to touch, what decisions it can make, and what goal it must achieve. Governance and design must be built together from the start, not added later. Lees meer
