577: How Church Became Theater & the Evangelical Imagination with Karen Swallow Prior
9 augustus 2023 · 1 uur 37 min
A new survey of worship leaders finds that four megachurches have cornered the worship music market. Should we care who is writing the songs we sing in church, and what gets lost when market forces influence local ministries? A sermon clip has gone viral showing a megachurch pastor scolding people who arrive late or leave early because they are treating the "church like it's a religious show instead of a welcoming family." But are people acting like church is a show because that's the model church leaders have created? We explore the history of how churches came to copy theaters and its impact on the church's mission and power. Then, Phil talks to Karen Swallow Prior about her new book, "The Evangelical Imagination: How Stories, Images, and Metaphors Created a Culture in Crisis." She explains how the current crisis in evangelicalism finds its roots in trying to preserve Victorian values rather than biblical ones. Also this week: a celebrity bear is above the law. Lees meer

576:Christian A.I., Church Dropouts, & Fixing Men with Christine Emba
2 augustus 2023 · 1 uur 37 min
A new chatbot based on OpenAI claims to have a "biblical worldview" and invites users to ask questions directly to the Apostle Paul. Is this a helpful tool, or another step closer to replacing Christian community with artificial intelligence? Then, a new article in The Atlantic says 40 million Americans have stopped attending church because our culture is addicted to work and no longer values community. But is it all the culture's fault, or does the church also carry some blame? Washington Post columnist, Christine Emba, is back to discuss her new report about the masculinity crisis. She explains why voices on the far right are engaging men with a message of misogyny and anger, while voices on the left aren't trying to engage men at all. Is there a better way out of the crisis? Also this week—toxic zombie worms Lees meer

French Friday: Alt-Right Lost Boys & Oppenheimer
28 juli 2023 · 1 uur 6 min
The presidential campaign of Ron Desantis recently fired a young communications staffer who created and posted a video celebrating fascism. It turns out the man has a history of engagement with racist, misogynist leaders of the Alt-Right movement. David French explains why so many conservative young men are being drawn to the Alt-Right, and how they are now occupying more influential roles within the American conservative movement and the Republican Party. Then, Skye Jethani and David French discuss the new Christopher Nolan movie, Oppenheimer. Was the U.S. justified in creating and dropping the A-bomb? 575: Barbie, Slavery, and the Image of God with Carmen Imes
26 juli 2023 · 1 uur 31 min
Hollywood is struggling. Fewer people are going to theaters, but this week saw the opening of two huge movies including Barbie. Can the movie revive Hollywood, or will its social commentary drive more Americans away? Florida's anti-woke policy is now revising how its public schools teach history by saying enslaved people benefited from the skills they learned. What's really behind the move to downplay the evil of slavery? Dr. Carmen Imes is back to discuss her new book "Being God's Image." She says the Bible has a radical message of human dignity and equality, but Christian communities often unknowingly undermine this ethic. Plus, Elon Musk rebrands Twitter, and scary stories from the beach. Lees meer

574: Non-Toxic Masculinity & Lessons from the Black Church with Justin Giboney
19 juli 2023 · 1 uur 42 min
The feminist movement has made significant advances in the last 50 years, but data indicates men are falling behind. Fewer men then women are graduating from college, deaths of despair are highest among men, and the phrase "toxic masculinity" is ubiquitous in the culture. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss Christine Emba's new article seeking a positive vision for masculinity and why it's elusive to both the right and left. Then, Kaitlyn talked to Justin Giboney from the And Campaign about the upcoming 2024 election. How can Christians avoid the partisan polarization and culture war extremism? Giboney says we should be like Jesus who took firm positions on issues of his day, but he did not pick sides. And he explains the wisdom of the historic Black church with its commitment to Scripture and justice. Also this week, what is God trying to tell us through a surfing sea otter? Lees meer

573: The Supreme Court Rules on Affirmative Action, Discrimination, & Free Speech
12 juli 2023 · 1 uur 16 min
The Supreme Court has released two highly anticipated and controversial rulings about race, sexual identity, and discrimination. First, colleges and universities may no longer give preferential status to applicants based on their race. Is the end of affirmative action really the catastrophe some are claiming? And a web designer will not be required by law to create websites for same-sex weddings. Is this ruling a defeat for LGBT rights, or a victory for free speech? And why has the reporting about both of these cases been so misleading? Also this week, a new government super-computer will determine whether we should geo-engineer the atmosphere to block out the sun. What could possibly go wrong? 572: Christian Nationalist Hospitality & Atheists Get Political with Ryan Burge
5 juli 2023 · 1 uur 20 min
Throughout the Bible, God's people are commanded to show hospitality to strangers. But Christian Nationalists unhappy about the number of immigrants in the U.S. are redefining biblical hospitality and twisting the words of Jesus to justify the deportation of millions. What does their inversion of biblical teachings reveal about the Christian Nationalist agenda? Then, pastor, political science professor, and Holy Post Pundit, Ryan Burge, is back to talk about the surprising data around the political activism of atheists, and why the rise of non-religious Americans is dangerous for democracy and destabilizing for society. Plus, why did the media obsess over the five lives lost on the Titanic submersible and largely ignore the capsized refugee boat that killed more than 500? Lees meer

French Friday: "Nerdfest 2023 - UFO Edition"
30 juni 2023 · 1 uur 4 min
An Air Force veteran recently came forward with whistleblower allegations that the U.S. government has possession of extra-terrestrial vehicles, more reports of UAPs (unidentified arial phenomena) have been declassified, and senators, former CIA directors, and even former President Obama are speaking publicly about UFOs. Self-identified "nerds" David French and Skye Jethani debate the evidence that we're not alone in the universe, explore the massive theological implications of discovering intelligent alien life, and conclude with a conversation around the virtue of humility and the danger of certainty. 571: TV, Authoritarianism, & the Formative Power of Reading with Jessica Hooten Wilson
28 juni 2023 · 1 uur 33 min
- It's been one year since the Dobbs decision by the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. What have we learned, who has benefitted politically, and has it really reduced the abortion rate? Do television shows that focus on individual heroes and violent solutions to problems cultivate authoritarian beliefs? A new study finds a link between how much TV a person watches and how they vote. A spokesperson from Liberty University says that in order to control the education of their kids, Christians can learn from Stalin, Hitler, and Mao—oh my! Kaitlyn interviews Jessica Hooten Wilson about the power of literature and reading in our spiritual formation, and why it's particularly challenging for evangelicals. 570: Hello AI Sermons, Goodbye Saddleback, & Happy Juneteenth with Rasool Berry
21 juni 2023 · 1 uur 26 min
Christians in Germany are using ChatGPT to create liturgies and even preach sermons. Is the rise of AI different from previous technologies, and how should the church respond? Meanwhile, the South Baptists voted overwhelmingly to prohibit women from being pastors and banned any churches that disagree. How did an issue that even John Piper argued was not essential in 1991 become grounds for excommunication in 2023? Then, a new documentary by author and pastor, Rasool Berry, introduces the history and meaning of Juneteenth. While some MAGA conservatives are condemning the holiday as "woke," Berry says it actually has deep connections to Christian theology and the church. Plus, Christian is searching for a castle in Belgium. Lees meer

Then, we share one of our most popular Holy Post bonus features with everyone where Christian Taylor asks Skye about what the Bible really says, and does not say, about hell. 566: Tim Keller, American Poverty, & the Legacy of Rich Mullins with James Bryan Smith
24 mei 2023 · 1 uur 36 min
Influential pastor, author, and apologist, Tim Keller, passed away last week. We reflect on Keller's ministry and wonder who is filling the shoes of the Christian giants we've lost. A new book about poverty says that the U.S. spends more on welfare than any other country except France, but the majority goes to help the wealthy and middle-class rather than the poor. Why aren't we doing more to end poverty, and is our view of the Bible to blame? Then, it's been 25 years since Rich Mullins died. Skye talks to Mullins' friend James Bryan Smith about the songwriter's inspiring life and legacy. Plus, Matthew Soerens shares some good news from the Southern border. Lees meer

565: The Vegan Bible, Loveless Christianity, & Spiritual Narcissism with Rainn Wilson
17 mei 2023 · 1 uur 23 min
Ethicist, David Gushee, says we are seeing the emergence of a new kind of loveless Christianity. But those who practice it say their anger, culture warring, and pursuit of power are actually how they're loving their neighbors. Then, Skye talks to actor Rainn Wilson, best known as Dwight Schrute from "The Office," about religious pluralism, spiritual narcissism, why Hollywood misrepresents Christians, and how he became a follower of the Baha'i faith. Wilson's new book is "Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution." Also this week—A.I. has rewritten Genesis to be vegan-friendly, and does God really hate yoga pants? Lees meer

564: How Rapture Theology Shaped America (Part 2)
10 mei 2023 · 1 uur 32 min
How did a theological system that rejected Christian participation in politics eventually give birth to the Religious Right? Phil talks to historian Daniel Hummel about the spread of rapture theology in the 20th century, why it spawned so many conspiracies, the legacy of the Left Behind books, and why rapture theology remains so popular despite being rejected by nearly every evangelical seminary. Also this week, why did controversial author, Joshua Butler, resign from his church? The embrace of Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump by the Religious Right is proof that the movement is now entirely post-Christian. And reflections on the coronation of King Charles III. Lees meer

563: How Rapture Theology Shaped America (Part 1)
3 mei 2023 · 1 uur 36 min
Many Christians in America simply assume that Jesus could return at any moment, that believers will be raptured in the twinkling of an eye, that the state of Israel has a special role in the End Times, and that the church should just save souls and stay out of politics. In Part 1 of an interview about this new book, historian Daniel G. Hummel explains to Phil how this rapture theology isn't rooted in church history, but was invented by a British layman less than 200 years ago. And why it was embraced by American pastors during the Civil War who wanted to avoid talking about slavery, race, and reconstruction. Also this week—paganism is on the rise. Who is really killing public schools? And women will win the battle of the sexes in 4.6 million years. Lees meer

Defined Terms to Know for This Week's Interview
Millennium - The thousand year reign of Christ described in Revelation 20:1-8. There are basically three understandings of this:
Premillennialism - (Think Left Behind book series) Christians will be raptured, leaving behind everyone else. There will be a tribulation period with the rise of the Antichrist, mark of the beast, war, famine, earthquakes, etc. before Christ eventually comes and rules on earth for 1,000 years during which peace will reign. After one final rebellion, God will crush evil forever, offer a final judgment, and establish heaven and hell for eternity.
Postmillennialism - The millennium will come from the spiritual and moral influence of the Church through preaching and teaching. Conversions will increase and evil will diminish. In other words, Christians will make the world a better and better place and after that, Christ will come back, the dead will be resurrected, and there will be a final judgment
Amillennialism - The 1000 year period mentioned in Revelation does not refer to a specific period of time, but to the heavenly reign…

French Friday: How to Thrive in a Post-Christian Culture
28 april 2023 · 59 min
From Harvard Law School to The New York Times, David French has repeatedly found himself in communities where secular progressivism is the majority view, and where his Christian beliefs face suspicion, ridicule, or even hostility. Skye Jethani asks French how he's learned to not just survive in these post-Christian enclaves, but actually thrive. What mistakes did he make? How did he successfully build relationships across political and philosophical barriers? And how did closer connections with those he disagreed with strengthen his faith? French also explains why Christians who sow fear and anger toward the culture will reap fear and anger from the culture. He's made that error and says joy and curiosity are what Christian leaders need to display in the public square instead. Lees meer

562: Fox Fires Tucker, Toxic Gun Culture, & Rethinking Revivals with Derwin Gray
26 april 2023 · 1 uur 25 min
After admitting it broadcast election lies and conspiracies, and paying $787 million in damages, Fox News has fired its most popular host. Does this signal a change at the cable news network? An online chatbot says Christianity gives it hope. Are we witnessing the first A.I. convert? Then, more innocent people are being shot by fearful gun owners who "feel threatened." Is this the inevitable outcome of America's addiction to fear and idolatry of guns? And Derwin Gray is back to ask a question he's been sitting on for 20 years—why isn't the Civil Rights Movement considered a Christian revival? He talks to Skye about the history of revivals in America, and how economic and political idols have prevented us from truly embracing the messianic mandate of Jesus. 561: How the Evangelical Movement Failed a Generation with Jon Ward
19 april 2023 · 1 uur 31 min
From the Jesus Movement in the 1970s, through the Religious Right in the 1980s, the rise of New Calvinism in the 1990s, and the MAGA movement today, as a Christian kid in the suburbs and then a political journalist in Washington, Jon Ward has had a front seat to the most significant characters and events in American evangelicalism. He talks with Skye about his new autobiography, "Testimony," and why he is still committed to Christian faith despite the failure of the movement that raised him. Also this week, early data shows a reduction in the number of abortions since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, but it's less than many predicted. The so-called "independent prophets'' are predicting God will kill Donald Trump's opponents next month. Why are they still supporting him when there are alternatives? And a report finds advocates of Christian Nationalism are more rooted in cultural heritage than Christian theology. Is anyone surprised? Lees meer

12 april 2023 · 1 uur 27 min
Protests have continued after last month's school shooting in Nashville, including in the Tennessee state legislature where the majority Republicans expelled two Democrats after their protests broke the rules of decorum. What was really accomplished by this extreme response, and what's really behind the rise of retaliation politics? Then, Skye talks to Alan Noble about his new book, "On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living." Noble says we've believed the lies that life is supposed to be pleasurable, that suffering is abnormal, and that our feelings are a reflection of reality. Instead, at a time when depression, anxiety, and loneliness are skyrocketing, he shows how our faith equips us to suffer well. Plus, scientists have grown mammoth meatballs. Yummy! Lees meer

French Friday: Transgenderism & Parental Rights
31 maart 2023 · 1 uur 2 min
It's becoming increasingly clear that parental rights is poised to be a significant issue in the 2024 election, particularly as it relates to transgenderism and gender-affirming healthcare. Skye Jethani talks to David French about his recent editorial that provoked a backlash from both ends of the political spectrum. French explains why recent efforts in California and Texas, which take opposite positions on youth transgenderism, both violate the long-affirmed rights of parents to make healthcare decisions for their own children without government interference. Is it another case of both the Right and Left embracing illiberal and unconstitutional tactics to fight the Culture War? Or, does the rise of transgenderism among kids demand the government's intervention regardless of what parents want? Lees meer

Why doesn't Congress work? A recent article explains how diversity, education, and geography are driving the political parties apart. These findings also help explain the widening fractures among evangelicals. In the past, evangelicalism was primarily driven by academic institutions in the North, but now it's increasingly fueled by entertainment interests in the South. Phil explains this rise of "Christian Nashville-ism." Then, Skye talks to Bishop Claude Alexander about his book "Necessary Christianity," and what he believes to be the most urgent issues facing the church today. 556: Teen Mental Health Revisited & Digital Discipleship with Nona Jones
15 maart 2023 · 1 uur 31 min
Feedback on the recent episode about the teen mental health report by the CDC was so strong that the Holy Post gang revisits the topic. Jonathan Haidt says three untruths that fuel depression were embraced by progressives ten years ago, but now they're commonplace among conservatives too. Then, in 1976, Jimmy Carter represented a biblically-rooted evangelicalism that was also politically progressive. So, why did white evangelicals abandon him—or did they? And former Facebook executive, Nona Jones, explains why social media companies say their mission is to create community but their business models do the opposite. Jones still believes there is hope for these platforms and is now working with YouVersion to build digital disciples. The Gospel Coalition published an article last week that brought together every divergent faction of the church to say, "Ick!" While many are discussing the troubling content of the article on social media, the Holy Post crew examines what is says about the troubling state of evangelical publishing. Then, new data finds liberal teens are struggling with depression at higher rates on average than conservative teens. What's the explanation? And Phil talks to professor Christopher Watkin about his book, "Biblical Critical Theory: How the Bible's Unfolding Story Makes Sense of Modern Life and Culture." Is critical theory really as evil as some culture warriors say it is? Watkin offers a more thoughtful and Christian perspective on how to critique society. Plus, Japan discovers 7,000 new islands. 554 Teenage Girls in Crisis & Rethinking Revelation with Scot McKnight
1 maart 2023 · 1 uur 33 min
A new report from the CDC finds a record number of teenage girls are now debilitated by mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. And social psychologist Jonathan Haidt says the evidence is abundant that social media is the cause, but the tech industry is resisting any changes. Phil, Kaitlyn, and Skye discuss the social, political, and spiritual dimensions of the crisis. They also revisit the Asbury revival and how previous revivals in America produced both good and bad fruit. New Testament professor, Scot McKnight, talks about his latest book, "Revelation for the Rest of Us." He argues that a literal reading of the book isn't just wrong but dangerous. Rather than speculating about timelines and events, McKnight says the book is intended to teach Christians in every age how to be discerning, dissident disciples within Babylon. Plus, unstoppable Canadian super pigs are coming! Lees meer

French Friday: The Real Masculinity Crisis
24 februari 2023 · 1 uur 9 min
There's no denying that American men are struggling. Depression, drug use, and suicide are on the rise, and there are plenty of voices on the far right eager to blame feminists, the LGBT movement, #MeToo, and the left in general. They say our culture has made traditionally masculine traits "toxic" and stolen from men the one thing they need most—respect. David French explains to Skye Jethani why this diagnosis is wrong. He argues that the real crisis isn't that men lack respect, but that they lack "virtuous purpose." Plus, French and Jethani revisit the war in Ukraine one year after the Russian invasion. While the Biden Administration's support for Ukraine has gotten stronger, overall American support has weakened. What does that mean, and how will this conflict eventually end? Lees meer

553: Revival Tourism & Christ vs Christians with Beth Moore
22 februari 2023 · 1 uur 26 min
She's finally here! Bible teacher and author Beth Moore joins Kaitlyn Schiess to discuss her new memoir, her calling, and how she found the courage to speak out against the political idolatry of evangelical leaders in 2016. Moore says she learned how to put her faith in Christ himself rather than in Christian people. Also this week, we discuss the revival at Asbury University that's attracted 20,000 people to a small town in Kentucky—including a lot of Christian celebrities. Is it a genuine movement of God's Spirit, or a product of social media spin? Could it be both? Plus, a Christian professor discovers why "Florida is where woke goes to die," evangelicals rejected Jimmy Carter for being too nice, and the Grinch who stole Easter. Lees meer

552 Jesus Gets Us & We Get Data on Christian Nationalists with Kristin Kobes Du Mez Vu
15 februari 2023 · 1 uur 33 min
A Christian campaign spent $20 million on two ads during the Super Bowl, but the "He Gets Us" commercials are facing criticism from both the right and left. One side says the ads did not present the gospel. The other says the campaign's funders are bigots. And everyone is wondering if the $20 million could have been spent more effectively. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn offer their takes. Then, Tim Keller has a new article with his prescription for how Christianity can thrive again in America, but does it all come down to overcoming political idolatry? And a new report from PRRI looks at the sobering data about Christian Nationalism. One-third of Americans are either committed Christian Nationalists or very sympathetic to it, and the majority of them are white evangelicals. Historian Kristin Kobes Du Mez is back to discuss the data and explain the link between Christian Nationalism, patriarchy, and authoritarianism. Plus, a candy factory is sued after workers fall into a chocolate vat. Lees meer

551 Power, Pacifism, & Being Consistently Pro-Life with Shane Claiborne
10 februari 2023 · 1 uur 8 min
What does it mean to be pro-life? Drawing from the words of Jesus, the Apostles, and the early church, Shane Claiborne says most American Christians have gotten it wrong. His new book, "Rethinking Life: Embracing the Sacredness of Every Person," argues for the value of the unborn, but also for combating poverty, racism, and other dehumanizing evils. He talks with Skye about how the early church's consistent ethic of life changed once it gained political power. It's one thing for a tiny church on the margins of society to apply the teachings of Jesus, but how do we apply his words when Christians have control of governments and armies? Skye is joined after the interview by Christian Taylor and Phil Vischer to debrief Claiborne's challenging ideas. Lees meer

550 Demons, Democrats, & Dominionists, Oh My!
8 februari 2023 · 1 uur
How did American politics go from a disagreement over policies to become a war between the forces of good and evil? Phil takes us on a journey through the fascinating origins of the New Apostolic Reformation movement as he traces a line from a professor at Fuller Seminary in the 1980s to the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Along the way, we learn how the movement popularized the integration of culture, politics, and spiritual warfare, and shaped the imaginations of generations of evangelicals. Plus, the Chinese spy balloon is a Rorschach test in the sky. And creepy things are happening to mice at a children's hospital in Cincinnati. Lees meer

Phil catches up with friend-of-the-show Esau McCaulley (New Testament Professor, NYT columnist, author of CT Book of the Year Reading While Black) for a wide-ranging conversation. 548 Andy Stanley, Spirit Warriors & The Greatest Threat To Christianity
1 februari 2023 · 1 uur 2 min
In a video clip from a sermon, influential megachurch pastor Andy Stanley said gay men and women who remain in the church "have more faith than a lot of you." The backlash has been swift, but are people misunderstanding his point? And why do some Christians think shifting views on sexuality and gender are the greatest threat to the church, while others believe it's Christian Nationalism and politics? Who's right? And what does our view say about us? And a new article explains the rise of Spirit Warriors—the independent Christian "prophets" on YouTube mixing politics and spiritual warfare. Where did they come from, and how much influence do they really have? Lees meer

547 French Friday: Selling Out, Gay Wedding Websites, & How People Change
27 januari 2023 · 1 uur 4 min
David French shares about his move to The New York Times, and why MAGA Conservatives call him a "sell out" when journalism on the far right is where the big money is found. Then, Skye and David discuss the 303 Creative case at the Supreme Court. Is creating a website a service or is it speech? The answer will determine whether the government may compel some religious businesses to support same-sex weddings. And new research shows diversity training is largely ineffective. Why do we continue to believe pre-packaged programs—both inside and outside the church—are how to change beliefs and behaviors? Lees meer

What story are we in? A rescue plan to get us out of a dying world? God's mission to save us from sin? Is my true purpose in life to "go to heaven and take as many people with me as I can?" 544: MLK, Reparations, & the Benefits of Awe
18 januari 2023 · 57 min
Martin Luther King Jr. is widely celebrated today, but that wasn't the case when he was killed in 1968. Esau McCaulley's editorial explains how King's current popularity comes from the tendency to cherry pick a few MLK quotes about race, but conveniently overlook his more controversial sermons about poverty, justice, and reparations. What does it mean to take King's words seriously today? Then, scientists have discovered the enormous psychological benefits of awe—the simultaneous feeling of overwhelming wonder and one's own insignificance. But are they simply affirming what every religion has known forever, and why have evangelicals given up on awe-inspiring architecture? Plus, the remarkable longevity of a lost turtle. Lees meer

543: Women and the Gender of God with Amy Peeler
11 januari 2023 · 1 uur 30 min
When Damar Hamlin collapsed during Monday Night Football we witnessed an outpouring of public prayer. We also saw a flood of vaccine conspiracy theories hit social media. Phil asks, why are conservative Christians so distrustful of experts and enamored with fringe conspiracies? Then, David French has joined The New York Times. Progressives are upset about his Christian views, and conservatives are accusing him of selling out for acceptance among liberal elites. This launches the hosts into a broader discussion about the difference between principled pluralism and cultural accommodation. And Christian theologians universally agree that the God revealed in the Bible is neither male nor female, but Jesus was a man and he taught us to pray to "Our Father." How do we reconcile these facts? Kaitlyn Schiess interviews Dr. Amy Peeler about her new book, Women and the Gender of God. Lees meer

542: How to Repair American Evangelicalism with Walter Kim
4 januari 2023 · 1 uur 31 min
The pandemic was miserable for mothers, right? New research disputes that claim and shows moms were actually happier than childless women. But not ALL moms. What makes the difference? A survey shows both conservative and progressive Americans believe the absolute worst about each other. Is there any hope for healing the divide? What makes human leg muscles different from other primate species? Phil gets to the bottom of it. And Skye interviews Walter Kim, the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, about what's broken in the evangelical movement in America and how to repair it. Plus, drunk Santas crash a tank and hormonal Rwandan elephants. Lees meer

French Friday: Free Speech & Social Media
30 december 2022 · 1 uur 6 min
Voices on the right, from Elon Musk to Fox News, are accusing social media companies of violating the First Amendment's protection of free speech. David French is back to talk with Skye Jethani about what speech the First Amendment does, and does not, protect. And he explains why the decision of a private citizen or company, like Twitter, to remove content or limit free speech is not unconstitutional. They also debate what responsibility social media companies do have for the speech they allow on their platforms, as well as court cases in Texas and Florida that could dramatically change how social media functions for all Americans. 539: Megachurch Christmas Controversy & Answers in Exodus with Carmen Imes
14 december 2022 · 1 uur 29 min
A Texas megachurch is facing criticism after a viral TikTok video showed a rehearsal of its Christmas production with drummers flying over the crowd on wires. The church says it's simply offering its best to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Critics say it's an extravagant violation of Jesus' humble spirit. Who's right? New data says Americans are far more isolated and lonely than ever before, and it's not because of Covid. Is the church the solution or part of the problem? And a researcher offers three surprising explanations for why the decline of religion in the U.S. didn't start until the 1990s. Then, Old Testament scholar Carmen Imes answers questions about the book of Exodus. Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? What does it really mean to take God's name in vain? And how do all of the details about the tabernacle apply to Christians today? Lees meer

538: Rotten Pastoral Restoration & the Power of Pain with Drew Dyck
7 december 2022 · 1 uur 23 min
Reactions to last week's show were strong. The Holy Post crew responds to listener feedback about LGBTQ representation in movies and Al Mohler's defense of conservatism. Former SBC president, Johnny Hunt, was removed from ministry for sexual assault, but last week four ministry colleagues decided it was time to "restore" him. When should disgraced pastors return to ministry, and have congregational and non-denominational churches proven to be incapable of holding toxic leaders accountable? A new Twitter scandal offers more evidence that Christian Nationalism is a mask for racism and misogyny. Then, friend of the podcast Drew Dyck is back to recommend four books covering topics like the formative power of suffering, new medical research about addiction, the best way to read through the Bible, and a novel about Ireland in the 1980s. Plus, Drew's war against fake Christmas trees. Lees meer

What in the World? EPISODE 4: The Mission of God
5 december 2022 · 1 uur 4 min
For more than a century, the American church has been arguing about the exact scope and boundaries of God's mission. Is the gospel narrowly about the redemption of people's souls, or does it also care about redeeming the world, society, and broken systems? In other words, is justice part of God's gospel mission? The way we answer that question has massive implications for what work we believe ultimately matters. This debate has torn the American church apart, but it's not one shared by many of our sisters and brothers around the world where a holistic vision of God's mission is just assumed rather than contested. Pastor Luis Luna from Honduras joins Skye Jethani to discuss why he doesn't separate the care of people's souls, from the care of their bodies, or the reformation of society. And how this holistic approach to mission sometimes creates problems when well-meaning American Christians bring their narrow definition of the gospel to Central America. Lees meer

French Friday: The Case for Civil Same-Sex Marriage
2 december 2022 · 1 uur 3 min
In 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v Hodges that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marriage. With the recent overturning of Roe v Wade, some are concerned Obergefell may be overturned next. Recently, David French wrote an article supporting a bipartisan bill to protect the legal right to same-sex marriage, and he's faced an avalanche of criticism for it. In this episode, he talks with Skye Jethani about the Respect for Marriage Act and responds to the critics who say the bill is a threat to religious liberty. French also explains why he's changed his mind about civil same-sex marriage while remaining opposed to it theologically. Lees meer

537: The War Over Christmas Movies & Gen Z's Mental Health with Josh Packard
30 november 2022 · 1 uur 27 min
The Hallmark Channel is now producing Christmas movies with LGBTQ characters and relationships leading the network's former CEO to launch a new holiday movie channel with straight relationships only. The Holy Post crew discusses the role of representation in entertainment, and why a number of recent LGBTQ-centric movies have bombed at the box office. Then, Al Mohler attacked David French for not opposing civil same-sex marriages leading Phil to ask whether Mohler is more interested in defending Christianity or just conservatism. And Skye talks with Josh Packard from Springtide Research about the mental health of Gen Z. New data says young people who engage in spiritual practices experience greater mental health, but they're not the practices most congregations promote. Lees meer
