The Steve Kmetko Firing
25 maart 2024 · 42 min

The rule has been, if you're holding the microphone, your job is to find out about the person you're aiming the mic at.
Today is different... I was asked to leave hollyood 20 years ago. Let's just say it wasn't my choice. Then again, to say that my life has been a strugggle after leaving the red carpets and achnor chair, would be overstating things. A little.
I knew the job was dangerous when i took it. ;)
This is Still Here Hollywood, and today, I'll telll you the story that I've never told, fully.
In recovery you learn "you're only as sick as your secrets". So with that in mind, I'm leaving the questioning to "Friend of the podcast", actor Amy Yasbeck.

Chewbacca… Robin… Tattoo… Ed McMahon. Sidekicks in film and television are some of the most important roles to fill on a cast. And all are pivotal to the success of the show. In the 1990’s there was an unforgettable sidekick who hammered his way to fame on one of the most popular comedies of the decade.

In the 1990’s television was in its heyday… The bulk of shows were still on the four broadcast networks. No streaming yet. Some cable. It was great.
One show on ABC catapulted some of its early stars into worldwide superstardom. One went to “Infinity and beyond”. Another went to the beach.
But when a cast changes on a TV hit, the show obviously, must sill go on.
There was one actor who perfectly filled the shoes and tool belt of the previous star in order to help keep the show on the air for years.

One of the biggest phrases ever dreamed up in the TV marketing world, was “Must See TV”.
In the 90’s, NBC and “Must See TV” became destination television for the entire country on Thursday nights. There was Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, ER… And another show that was perfectly cast, about a tiny airline in Nantucket, run by two witty and engaging brothers. That show was “Wings”.

Strong, independent, women in TV comedies have always been a hallmark of the genre. Dishing out laughs, while solving problems with wisecracks, is comedy gold.
For 11 seasons, starting in 1993, there was one woman on NBC who perfectly sliced and diced the punchlines with her sharp tongued delivery.
