18,000 oysters & counting – Prof. Fiona Regan on restoring nature’s super filters and eDNA
29 januari 2026 · 41 min
In this episode, Will and Tom welcomed Professor Fiona Regan, founder & director of the DCU Water Institute, which recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary of research, innovation and impact in water science. Lees meer
In the episode she speaks about environmental DNA, otherwise known as eDNA, and how this links to water quality around the coastal Ireland.
She also speaks about an oyster reef restoration project on the East Coast. Around 18,000 oysters were introduced more than two centuries after they were wiped out. By feeding on nitrates and plankton, they are helping to clear algae to improve coastal biodiversity and marine habitat.
It was an honour to welcome Fiona back onto the podcast, especially hearing her inspiration for the institute, including a passage from James Joyce’s Ulysses on water – we’re going to share this on our socials so make sure to check it out!

Building the world’s first biodiversity venture fund – Tom Quigley, Superorganism
15 januari 2026 · 44 min
In this episode of The Stream, Will Sarni and Tom Freyberg sit down with Tom Quigley, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Superorganism, the first venture firm dedicated exclusively to biodiversity-focused startups. Lees meer
It’s a timely conversation. Just this week, Tom and his co-founder Kevin Webb announced Superorganism’s first venture fund, exceeding $25 million, marking a major milestone for nature and biodiversity investing.
Before launching Superorganism, Tom spent years working in the field across Australia, Madagascar, and the Cayman Islands, earning a reputation as a coral reef conservationist turned start-up operator and investor. That experience now shapes how Superorganism approaches early-stage investing in nature tech.
We explore why biodiversity has lagged climate in venture capital, how that is beginning to change, and how Superorganism plans to deploy capital across three core areas:
Industries driving biodiversity loss
The overlap between biodiversity and climate
Enabling technologies that unlock new ways to protect and restore nature
It was an honour to speak with Tom about building the fund, the partners, how experience with start-ups will help and the link between biodiversity loss and water.

The Latin American iceman - Sebastián Goldschmidt on restoring ice reserves and ecosystems
8 januari 2026 · 38 min
In this episode of The Stream, Will Sarni and Tom Freyberg are joined by Sebastián Goldschmidt, founder of Nilus, to explore an unexpected climate solution: rebuilding ice to secure water. Lees meer
Named by Forbes as one of Chile’s Sustainable Minds, Sebastián is working with high-altitude communities across Latin America to develop artificial ice reservoirs, a nature-based, engineered approach inspired by ancestral techniques from the Ladakh region, often known as the Guardians of the Himalayas. The idea is simple but powerful: store water in solid form during winter, then release it gradually during the dry season when it’s needed most.
While much of the climate narrative focuses on melting glaciers and disappearing ice, this conversation looks at what it might mean to regrow ice reserves, and why doing so could play a critical role in water security, ecosystem resilience, and climate adaptation.
Sebastián also shares what it takes to scale a nature-based solution at thousands of metres above sea level, and how Nilus is partnering with organisations including Orica Impact Fund and Coca-Cola as part of the 100+ Accelerator programme.
This is a thoughtful discussion on water, climate, Indigenous knowledge, and innovation, and a reminder that some of the most effective solutions are rooted in both ancient wisdom and modern engineering.

Taking on PFAS (forever chemicals) with synthetic biology – Nicole Richards
9 oktober 2025 · 46 min
In this episode, we welcomed Nicole Richards, CEO of US firm Allonnia, a company that promises to enzymes and microbes to degrade environmental contaminants. Lees meer
Now the topic of PFAS, per and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as forever chemicals, is getting a lot of attention.
Known for their unbreakable bonds, they’re used in pretty much everything, from non-stick saucepans through to waterproof jackets, and military firefighting foam applications. Following a regulatory limit introduction by the US Environmental Protection Agency, as well as corporate fines to chemical companies responsible for PFAS pollution, there has been almost a space race of start-ups in this space promising destruction techniques.
It was great to get Nicole’s perspective because Allonnia is quite unique. It was launched out of Ginkgo Bioworks Ferment Consortium with a $40 million Series A funding round, which was then boosted by another $15 million funding round from DARPA, the Defense Advanced Projects Agency.
Now, $55 million for a start-up is ana extremely rare position to be in! Nicole discusses this, as well as making the leap from almost 30 years in chemical engineering over to the start-up world.
There’s a lot of discussions on PFAS, the impact on human health, and how technology innovation will help to solve this problem. Nicole comes at it from an interesting perspective of how synthetic biology will play a role.

Building a stock exchange for nature recovery – Guy Thompson
14 augustus 2025 · 46 min
Season 9 kicks off with a deep dive into nature finance, water, and market innovation, with Guy Thompson, MD at EnTrade. Lees meer
After more than a decade advising the UK government at Natural England, Guy Thompson made a bold leap into the private sector. In this episode, he shares why he had to scratch the itch of building something new, and how that led him to co-found EnTrade, a pioneering platform driving market-based solutions for nature.
We unpack how EnTrade evolved from a Wessex Water incubator into an independent company, and how it’s forging unlikely partnerships, from start-up thinkers to giants like Arup, to link farmers, utilities, and developers in innovative new ways.
From biodiversity net gain in the UK planning system to bridging the £44 billion nature finance gap, Guy shares use cases from Somerset and beyond, showing how we can harness the power of water markets to deliver outcomes for nature, water quality, and climate.
We also reflect on the recently published Cunliffe Review, what’s working (and what’s not) in policy, and why EnTrade is looking to shake things up.
👉 If you're curious about the intersections of biodiversity, policy, water, and finance: this one’s for you.

Reasons for hope and climate optimism – Dr Peter Gleick on the three ages of water
30 januari 2025 · 55 min
We were delighted to welcome Dr Peter Gleick, a leading scientist, innovator and communicator on water and climate issues. Lees meer
He founded the Pacific Institute in 1987 to be one of the most innovative, independent non-governmental research centres to advance solutions for the world’s most pressing water challenges.
For the podcast we wanted to speak with him about his latest book entitled, The Three Ages of Water. The book covers Earth and humanity’s intricate relationship with water. From the prehistoric past where the cradles of civilisation were born around water, through to the current age and ‘imperilled present’, as Gleick calls it, where we learned to engineer water to our benefit, but also with unexpected consequences. And finally, the third age and hope for the future.
Now Dr Gleick rightly deserves to be on the legends series – as well as being a MacArthur Fellow, he’s also an elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences.
As you’ll hear, he remains optimistic that we have the solutions to hand and with the right decisions, we can solve water.

On the third episode of The Stream, Will and Tom were delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Benedek. He was the very first winner of the Lee Kuan Yew Prize, cited as someone who has revolutionised conventional water treatment. Lees meer
For some people, founding, scaling and selling a global technology business once is enough. For Dr Benedek, he was just getting warmed up.
It was in 1980 that he founded Zenon to help accelerate the reuse of water. After selling the business to GE for over $600 million, he went back into academia and took a position at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.
However, he then saw the need for a resource revolution and the need to turn food waste into energy. And then Anaergia was born.
In this podcast, he shares his personal story, or evolving from academia to entrepreneur, and the successes and challenges along the way. This is a great story for any budding tech entrepreneur with a vision, and what’s needed to make it happen.
When it comes to legends in water, Andrew Benedek is certainly someone who immediately springs to mind. And in his early 80s, he’s incredible sharp, articulate and funny – it was an honour to have him on The Stream.

Investing into ag-tech innovations and farmland with agronomist Baptiste Tellier | The Stream with Will and Tom
1 augustus 2024 · 39 min
In the latest episode of the season, we were delighted to be joined by Baptiste Tellier, the managing director of Fall Line Capital who is focused on farm management, data analysis and deal sourcing. Lees meer
As a trained agronomist, Baptiste previously he oversaw the development and implementation of sustainable farming practices for over 200 potato farmers at Nestle. Before this, he was the former farm operations intern at The Mitchell Farm, conducting agronomic studies on corn yield.
As he currently manages both farmland and venture activities, he provides a super interesting perspective, with Fall Line essentially building out its own ecosystem – investing into the innovations and with the farmland to help deploy and scale those innovations.
Baptiste disagrees with the stereotype that farmers are slow to adopt innovations, instead shifting the focus onto the solutions that aren’t perhaps the right fit for the market.
As well as discussing previous investments, including into Lumo, he also talks about what excites him about the market – for example, robotic automation in agriculture.

11 juli 2024 · 40 min
In this second episode of the season we’re joined by Roric Paulman, a Nebraskan farmer and also chair of the Nebraskan Water Balance Alliance, an organisation that catalyses best practices among Nebraska farmers. Lees meer
Roric has nearly 40 years of farming experience, including across the family Paulman Farms, an 8500 acre, rain-fed and irrigated farming operation. It’s located in southwest Nebraska, with land that extends into Lincoln, Keith and Perkins counties.
He talks about how the 4th generation in the family is currently running the farm, and the 5th generation, including his young grandson, knows everything there is to know!
Roric has witnessed almost 40 years of innovation across farming, from having to manually pipe water through to IoT and sensors able to measure down to the last drop.
Speaking to Roric was so interesting. He sits at the intersection between policy and practise, discussing at the highest level through the alliance and politics yet returning to help keep things running at the farm. This is a great addition to the water-agriculture focus of this seasons podcast.

Soil health, why it matters and the impact on water with MyLand’s Dane Hague | S7 Ep.2
28 mei 2024 · 50 min
In this second episode of the season, we’re joined by Dane Hague, CEO & Co-Founder of MyLand. Lees meer
Dane openly shares his origin story, moving from a successful corporate legal career into co-founding a soil health company that harnesses microalgae.
He describes how we got to the stage of unfarmable land, with heavy industrial and commercial farming activity stripping out the life from soil.
The co-founder discusses the dire situation of farmland being abandoned at an alarming rate, and the impact of unhealthy soil on water. In his words, Dane says that we can’t solve the water crisis without thinking about soil.
He also talks about engaging in dialogue with farmers and why bombarding them with data isn’t the answer.
Personally, the topic of soil health was new to me and as a result, I found this episode and conversation with Dane so interesting, and perhaps alarming at the same time.
We’re interested to know what you also think on this topic.
