1001 Classic Short Stories & Tales

What happens when an ambitious young newspaper reporter goes looking for adventure and discovers an entire island just waiting for someone to take charge?

The Reporter Who Made Himself King, Richard Harding Davis's wonderfully entertaining 1894 adventure, introduces us to Albert Gordon, a 23-year-old reporter who has already packed more excitement into three years than most men experience in a lifetime.

He's covered train wrecks, fires, political conventions, revolutions, Indian outbreaks, floods and earthquakes. There's only one assignment he still desperately wants:

    A war.

Unfortunately for Gordon, the world stubbornly refuses to provide one.

So when he's offered the chance to travel to the remote Pacific island of Opeki as secretary to the newly appointed American consul, Gordon figures it might be the perfect place to slow down, enjoy the tropics, and finally write that novel he's been planning.

    He couldn't be more wrong.

Almost immediately, Gordon discovers that Opeki is unlike anything he expected. The island has its own king, rival tribes, an enterprising young American named Stedman, two British sailors known as the Bradleys, and what passes for a connection to civilization through an obscure cable company.

Then Gordon's superior, Captain Travis, decides island life isn't for him and promptly heads home, leaving Gordon behind as acting American consul.

And that's when things really begin to get interesting.

Before long, Gordon and Stedman are behaving like a miniature diplomatic corps. They put on uniforms, hand out medals, impress the local king, make grand plans to modernize Opeki, and contemplate everything from a standing army to teaching the islanders baseball.

But there is one serious problem.

High in the mountains live the Hillmen, led by King Messenwah, and they have a habit of raiding Opeki, stealing livestock and terrorizing its…

THE MAN OF THE CROWD by Edgar Allan Poe

There are some people we can understand at a glance. And then there are those who remain an absolute mystery.

In THE MAN OF THE CROWD, Edgar Allan Poe takes us onto the crowded streets of London, where an unnamed narrator sits watching the endless procession of humanity outside a coffeehouse. Then one peculiar old man catches his attention. There is something about the stranger he cannot explain, something that compels him to leave his seat and follow the man through the city streets, deeper into the night and deeper into mystery. [interestin...rature.com], [litcharts.com]

First published in 1840, THE MAN OF THE CROWD is vintage Poe, but not quite the Poe of haunted houses and premature burials. This is psychological suspense, exploring curiosity, obsession, anonymity, secrets, and the unsettling realization that another human being may ultimately be unknowable. [litcharts.com], [supersummary.com]

Who is this strange man? Why does he seem unable to leave the crowds? And why does our narrator become so determined to understand him?

Turn down the lights and join us for one of Edgar Allan Poe's strangest and most thought-provoking tales.

This classic short story by Washington Irving is a well-written tale of life in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town in New York State in an area bordering the Hudson River , where many Dutch and German immigrants settled after Henry Hudson's explorations. Along with a desire to work hard and prosper, the Dutch brought with them their superstitions..and the deep woods and wild things in that country provided a great setting for stories. In this story, a tall, gangly schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane battles with a favorite local hero for the affections of a wealthy Dutch maid. Irving is a master of the English language and uses rich, descriptive words and phrases in his story, providing a great way for the listener to brush up on the better side of the English language. 1001 Classic Short Stories & Tales

Henry van Dyke's The Messengers at the Window is a gentle, mystical tale set on a lonely lighthouse island in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The story is told by a visitor staying with Baptiste Thibault, the current lighthouse‑keeper, and his daughter Nataline — descendants of the legendary original keeper, Nataline Fortin. As the September storm rages outside, a small bird strikes the window, and Baptiste explains an old Breton belief: sometimes birds are "the messengers of God" who bring warnings or truth to a household.

Baptiste then recounts a haunting family story from nearly fifty years earlier. His father, Marcel Thibault, returning home by boat one night, discovered a drowned man floating in the water — a man wearing a heavy gold ring with a red stone. Overcome by greed, Marcel chopped off the dead man's swollen finger to steal the ring.

That night, as Marcel tried to hide his crime, strange blows struck the lighthouse window. Marcel saw — or believed he saw — a hand with the little finger missing pressed against the glass. His wife, Nataline Fortin, saw only stunned birds, but she understood the meaning: the birds were messengers, urging confession. One bird was a cedar‑bird, another a blackbird, and finally a wounded cross‑bill — the sacred bird whose twisted beak, she said, came from trying to pull the nails from Christ's hands.

Under her steady, fearless guidance, Marcel confessed everything. Together they rowed out under the moonlight to return the severed finger — and the ring — to the sea where the drowned man had come from.

"The Million Dollar Bond Robbery" by Agatha Christie

    EPISODE DESCRIPTION

A million dollars in Liberty Bonds. A sealed cabin on a luxury ocean liner. And a crime so perfectly timed it was over before the ship left port. Poirot and Hastings are on the case — but Poirot won't be boarding the Olympia. He'll solve this one from his armchair with a single question about a timetable. One of Christie's sharpest early puzzles and a masterclass in misdirection.

    ABOUT AGATHA CHRISTIE

Dame Agatha Christie (1890–1976) is the best-selling fiction writer of all time, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. She introduced Hercule Poirot in 1920 and by 1923 was already in complete command of the puzzle mystery. Her 66 novels, 14 short story collections, and The Mousetrap — the longest-running stage play in history — remain the gold standard of detective fiction.

    PLOT SUMMARY

Poirot and Hastings are discussing newspaper reports of bond thefts when Miss Esmé Farquhar arrives to hire Poirot. Her fiancé Philip Ridgeway was transporting a million dollars in Liberty Bonds on the SS Olympia — locked in a cabin safe, key never leaving his pocket — when they vanished. Scotland Yard is baffled and Ridgeway's own uncle suspects him of negligence. Poirot asks one precise question about the ship's sailing schedule, and needs nothing else. The truth: the theft never happened on board at all. It was engineered before departure by the one person who controlled both the bonds and the paperwork. The locked cabin was a decoy. The ocean liner was a stage set. Christie placed every clue in plain sight — and still wins.

Francis Brett Hart (August 25, 1836 – May 5, 1902) wrote under the name Bret Harte and became one of the most celebrated American authors of the late 19th century — the writer who first turned California's Gold Rush mining camps into serious literature. Born in Albany, New York, he traveled west to California at age 18, arriving in the aftermath of the great rush of 1849. What he found there — gamblers, miners, outcasts, drifters, and an extraordinary cast of characters living by improvised codes — became the raw material for a career that would briefly make him the most famous writer in America.

1001 Classic Short Stories & Tales

Episode Summary: In early‑1900s New York, a young woman named Hetty Pepper loses her job and faces an empty cupboard. When she meets a kind stranger in the hallway of her boarding house, the two decide to combine their meager supplies — a potato, an onion, and a can of tomatoes — into a single meal. What follows is one of O. Henry's most tender stories: a celebration of generosity, companionship, and the mysterious "third ingredient" that turns survival into hope.

    Themes:

    Compassion in hard times

    The dignity of ordinary people

    The magic of shared humanity

Love as the unseen ingredient that transforms life

SHOW NOTES – The Secret Garden (A Father Brown Mystery by G.K. Chesterton)

    Episode Summary

Tonight's story is one of G.K. Chesterton's most atmospheric and ingenious Father Brown mysteries — a tale of moonlight, murder, and impossible circumstances. The Secret Garden begins at the Paris home of Aristide Valentin, Chief of the Paris Police, where a distinguished group of guests gathers for dinner. Among them is the unassuming English priest, Father Brown, whose quiet presence will soon prove essential.

Valentin's garden is unlike any other: large, elegant, and completely sealed off from the outside world by high, smooth walls topped with spikes. There is no exit except through the guarded front door. Yet in this enclosed space, under a sharp moon and drifting storm clouds, a headless corpse is discovered in the grass — a murder that seems not only brutal, but physically impossible.

As panic spreads among the guests, Valentin attempts to solve the crime using logic and forensic deduction. But Father Brown, with his gentle manner and deep understanding of human nature, sees something else — something everyone else has missed. What follows is one of Chesterton's finest locked‑garden mysteries, filled with twists, misdirection, and the quiet brilliance of the little priest from Essex.

SHOW NOTES – Robin Encompasses a Marriage (From The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood)

    Episode Summary

Today's story comes from Howard Pyle's The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, and it captures one of the most joyful and dramatic episodes in the entire Robin Hood tradition — the day Robin and his Merry Men stopped a wedding, rescued a heartbroken bride, and set things right with a little courage, a little mischief, and a great deal of Lincoln Green.

Fair Ellen is to be married against her will to the wealthy Sir Stephen of Trent. Her true love, Allan a Dale, stands helpless — until Robin Hood swears that Allan will "eat from the platter filled for Sir Stephen." What follows is one of the most delightful scenes in the Robin Hood canon: disguises, trickery, Friar Tuck's booming laughter, Little John's steady sword, and Robin's bold interruption of a church ceremony that was never meant to be.

This is Robin Hood at his best — clever, fearless, and determined to defend the innocent.

    What Happens in This Tale

Robin chooses a score of his best men and disguises himself as a wandering minstrel.

The band travels from Sherwood to the Vale of Rotherstream, hiding near the church where Ellen's forced wedding will take place.

Friar Tuck infiltrates the church, preparing for Robin's signal.

The Bishop of Hereford arrives in full pomp, unaware that Robin Hood is waiting.

Sir Stephen and Ellen arrive — Ellen pale and sorrowful, Sir Stephen proud and oblivious.

Robin steps forward, halts the ceremony, and blows three blasts on his horn.

Little John, Will Stutely, and eighteen yeomen storm the church.

Allan a Dale arrives with Robin's bow, kneels, and joins the rescue.

Friar Tuck publishes the banns nine times and marries Allan and Ellen himself.

Robin forces the Bishop to give Ellen his golden chain as a wedding gift.

The yeomen return to Sherwood for a feast "such as Nottinghamshire never saw before."
