    Afspelen
Meet Changyuraptor, the four-winged dinosaur with exceptionally long feathers. Discover what its unusual anatomy reveals about the possible evolution of flight. Lees meer

What made Changyuraptor so unusual? This feathered dinosaur lived about 125 million years ago in China and had exceptionally long feathers on its hind limbs and tail. In this episode, we explore its dinosaur anatomy, including its four-winged appearance, its size and the possible role of its long tail feathers in flight and landing. We also examine the questions surrounding how it moved through the air, whether it glided between trees and what its anatomy can tell us about dinosaur evolution. Although Changyuraptor may have been capable of flight, scientists are still working to understand exactly how it moved. Its discovery adds to our understanding of dinosaur science and the relationship between feathered dinosaurs and early birds. We also review the Black Hills Institute in South Dakota, home to Stan the T. rex, impressive fossil displays and a remarkable collection of dinosaur discoveries.

A review of the Black Hills Institute in South Dakota, home to Stan the T. rex and where Sue the T. rex was found. Also, dinosaur of the day Changyuraptor yangi, a large Microraptor with a 21 foot wingspan, described in 2014.

  15. The Big Triceratops and Torosaurus Dinosaur Debate

    21 april 2015 · 57 min

    Afspelen
What if Torosaurus wasn't a separate dinosaur at all? Explore the dinosaur research behind the debate over whether it was actually a mature Triceratops, and how fossil evidence shapes what we know. Lees meer

Could Torosaurus and Triceratops be different stages of the same dinosaur? Paleo artist Josh Cotton joins us to explore this question and the challenges of interpreting the fossil record. The debate shows how dinosaur research can change our understanding of dinosaur classification as scientists examine the evidence. We also discuss how new dinosaur discoveries and dinosaur research influence paleoart, from reconstructing dinosaur anatomy to depicting prehistoric animals accurately. Cotton shares how he uses digital tools, drawing and scientific evidence to bring extinct animals to life, and why those reconstructions can change as new information emerges. 16. How Dysalotosaurus the Dinosaur Grew and Developed

    18 april 2015 · 18 min

    Afspelen
What can dinosaur fossils tell us about how a dinosaur grew up? Dysalotosaurus research offers clues from its brain, teeth and bones, including evidence of possible viral infection. Lees meer

Dysalotosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic in what is now Tanzania. Thousands of its fossils have helped researchers study how this small, two-legged herbivore changed as it matured. We explore research comparing the brains and inner ears of juvenile and adult Dysalotosaurus using CT scans and 3D imaging. The findings show how hearing and cognitive processes changed with age, while differences in teeth raise questions about what young Dysalotosaurus ate.

We also look at research suggesting that some Dysalotosaurus bones show signs of a viral infection, potentially providing very early evidence of viral disease. Its fossils offer a rare opportunity to study growth across different ages, although some questions about its development still need more research.

Dinosaur news, including a 5-year-old that discovered a Nodosaur, a teenage Daspletosaurus that was regularly attacked by its own kind, a new dinosaur exhibit in a mall, and more. Also, dinosaur of the day Dysalotosaurus lettowvorbecki, a dryosaurid iguanodontian named after a German WWI hero.

  18. The Real Dilophosaurus Dinosaur Behind Jurassic Park

    1 april 2015 · 15 min

    Afspelen
Dinosaur discoveries can change what we know about famous dinosaurs. In this episode, we explore dinosaur science through the real Dilophosaurus — and what Jurassic Park got wrong. Lees meer

Dilophosaurus is famous for its distinctive double crest, but its real story is much different from the small, venomous dinosaur shown in Jurassic Park. Garrett and Sabrina explain that there is no evidence that Dilophosaurus had a frill, venom, or the ability to spit, and they compare its fictional size with the roughly 20-foot-long animal described in the episode. They also explore what scientists think about its crests, vision, teeth, possible hunting and scavenging behavior, swimming, and relationship to other early theropods. The episode traces the dinosaur's discovery in Arizona and the process that eventually established Dilophosaurus as its own genus. Along the way, the hosts discuss dinosaur discoveries and other dinosaur news, including dinosaur footprints revealed by a rare tide in northern France and a possible new titanosaur from Siberia. The episode also looks at how changing scientific evidence affects our understanding of dinosaur science and dinosaur research.

Dinosaur news, including a supertide in Northern France that reveals dinosaur tracks every 18 years, a salamander that snacked on dinosaurs, and the discovery of a new titanosaur in Siberia. Also, dinosaur of the day Dilophosaurus, a medium-sized theropod with two crests on the top of its head best known for its inaccurate portrayal in Jurassic Park.

  19. Meet Anzu, the “Chicken from Hell” Dinosaur

    22 maart 2015 · 18 min

    Afspelen
A strange dinosaur discovery from Hell Creek reveals what Anzu looked like, how it lived, and why its fossils changed what scientists knew about this unusual group. Lees meer

Anzu Wiley is one of the most complete members of its group ever discovered, with an 80% complete skeleton helping paleontologists reconstruct a bizarre, bird-like dinosaur from North America. In this episode, we cover the dinosaur research behind Anzu, including its feathers, beak, claws, injuries, possible omnivorous diet, and relationship to other oviraptosaurs. We also look at why Anzu matters for dinosaur discoveries: the fossils showed that this group, previously known mostly from Asia, also lived in North America. The episode then expands into the wider history of these dinosaurs, including how scientists changed their view of oviraptors after discovering evidence that they were protecting eggs rather than stealing them. Along the way, we cover other dinosaur news, including Utahraptor skeletons preserved in a huge plaster block, new research on Nothronychus, a dinosaur-era crocodile-like animal, and Jurassic World news. The episode also explains why Anzu became known as the “chicken from hell” and how the Hell Creek Formation continues to produce important dinosaur discoveries.

Dinosaur news, including dinosaur balloon sculptures in Singapore, a $100,000 Lego stop-motion Jurassic Park movie, and confirmation of the sequel to Jurassic World. 20. New Dinosaur Species Torvosaurus gurnii: The 32-Foot Predator of Portugal

    18 maart 2015 · 12 min

    Afspelen
A new dinosaur species from Portugal was a 32-foot predator with four-inch teeth. Meet Torvosaurus gurnii and learn why its discovery changed the story of Jurassic Europe. Lees meer

Torvosaurus gurnii was identified from fossils found in Portugal, including a jawbone, shin bone, teeth, and tail vertebrae. Researchers realized it was different from the related Torvosaurus tanneri partly because it had fewer teeth in its upper jaw and differences in its bones. The episode explores how this new dinosaur species may have been one of the biggest predators known from Jurassic Europe and how its size fits an ecosystem filled with herbivores such as stegosaurs and sauropods.

The discussion also looks at Torvosaurus gurnii as a large carnivore, including its powerful bite, sharp claws, and possible scavenging behavior. The discovery matters because scientists had thought many dinosaurs living in Jurassic Europe were relatively small, but this dinosaur suggests the picture was more complicated. The episode also covers Megalosauridae, the group Torvosaurus belonged to, and the fun fact that 108 dinosaur species have been discovered in Britain so far.

Dinosaur news, including playing as a dinosaur in the Jurassic World lego game, a 3D dinosaur jugsaw puzzle on Kickstarter, and new animatronic dinosaurs in zoos and museums. Also, dinosaur of the day Torvosaurus Gurneyi, a large Jurassic carnivore in Portugal that has changed the way paleontologists see dinosaurs in Europe.

    15 maart 2015 · 12 min

    Afspelen
Pentaceratops aquilonius was hiding in a Canadian museum for more than 75 years before scientists recognized it as a new dinosaur species. What did they find? Lees meer

Garrett and Sabrina explore the story behind Pentaceratops aquilonius, including how Dr. Nick Longrich recognized the fossils as a distinct species and how the dinosaur compares with other horned dinosaurs. They explain why so many chasmosaur species lived in different regions, how dinosaurs may have adapted physically to different habitats, and why northern and southern species can look different. The episode also covers dinosaur news from a vandalized dinosaur egg site in Spain, a new aetosaur species discovered in North Carolina, dinosaur sounds from Jurassic Park, a prehistoric park coming to the Calgary Zoo, and a campaign for dinosaur-themed shoes for young girls. The episode closes with the fun fact that Triceratops and Torosaurus were once considered separate species before evidence suggested they were the same.

Dinosaur news, including what animals made the dinosaur sounds in Jurassic Park, the Earl Sinclair Dinosaurs and Notorious B.I.G. mashup, and 70 million year old dinosaur eggs being vandalized in Spain. 23. What New Dinosaur Aquilops Reveals About Dinosaur Migration

    9 maart 2015 · 16 min

    Afspelen
Aquilops was tiny, but this new dinosaur species has a big story to tell about how dinosaurs moved between Asia and North America. Lees meer

Aquilops lived in what is now Montana about 106 million years ago and was the oldest horned dinosaur found in North America at the time of its discovery. The fossil was unusual: researchers found only a skull, yet its distinctive beak and other skull features were enough to name a new species. The episode explores how scientists identified Aquilops, what its small size tells us about this early ceratopsian, and why its relationship to Asian horned dinosaurs provides evidence for dinosaur migrations between the continents.

We also look at the limits of the discovery. Because only the skull was found, scientists had to reconstruct much of Aquilops from its relatives, and its age and status as a distinct species raise questions about how paleontologists identify dinosaurs from incomplete fossils. Along the way, we discuss new methods for estimating dinosaur weight, including 3D modeling of Sophie the Stegosaurus, plus dinosaur news involving virtual reality and Jurassic World.

Dinosaur news, including scientists using 3D scanning to measure the weight of Sophie the Stegosaurus, dinosaurs in Jurassic World, and the new game Dinosaur Island. Also, dinosaur of the day Aquilops, the tiny horned dinosaur the size of a bunny that traveled to North America from the Beiring Strait and was an ancestor of Triceratops.

  34. Dinosaur Trace Fossils and Dr. Anthony Martin on Tracks, Nests, Burrows, and Coprolites

    26 januari 2015 · 35 min

    Afspelen
How do scientists study dinosaurs without bones? Dr. Anthony Martin explains how tracks, nests, burrows, coprolites, and other trace fossils reveal dinosaur behavior and prehistoric life. Lees meer

Most dinosaur discoveries focus on skeletons, but trace fossils can reveal how dinosaurs actually lived. In this episode, ichnologist Dr. Anthony J. Martin explains how dinosaur tracks, nests, burrows, coprolites (fossilized dung), gastroliths, and other trace fossils help scientists reconstruct dinosaur behavior that bones alone cannot show.

We explore what trace fossils reveal about dinosaur parenting, herd movement, hunting, swimming, migration, feeding, and nesting, along with the discovery of the first known burrowing dinosaur, Oryctodromeus. Dr. Martin also discusses how paleontologists test hypotheses, why modern birds help explain dinosaur behavior, and how new fossil discoveries continue to reshape dinosaur science.

The conversation also covers famous dinosaur track sites, the challenges of identifying fossil evidence in the field, and how dinosaur research is changing our understanding of prehistoric ecosystems and ancient landscapes.

Interview with Dr. Anthony J. Martin, author of Dinosaurs Without Bones, which details the day to day lives of dinosaurs by studying ichnology (the study of traces such as footprints or burrows rather than fossilized bones).

Also, dinosaur of the day Oryctodromeus, a dinosaur that burrowed.

Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the best-known dinosaurs, but new dinosaur research continues to reshape what scientists know about how it lived. In this episode, paleontologist Pete Larson, president of the Black Hills Institute and leader of the famous Sue excavation, explains what decades of fossil discoveries have revealed about T. rex.

We discuss the evidence behind the predator-versus-scavenger debate, whether Tyrannosaurus rex may have hunted in family groups, how scientists study dinosaur behavior from fossils, and what discoveries suggest about parenting, feathers, biomechanics, growth, and sexual differences. Pete also shares how new paleontology research changes long-held ideas as additional fossils are discovered and studied.

Interview with Pete Larson from the Black Hills Institute and a discussion of the new movie "Dinosaur 13" which details the discovery and legal battle over the T. rex Sue.
