Criterion Hall of Fame - Sentimental Value & Peeping Tom
4 november 2026 · 59 min
With the upcoming 50% off Criterion Collection sale, Matt has chosen two films to add to his Criterion Hall of Fame that are among his favourite of their 4K UHD releases. Each of these makes an impact in a different way, and both highlight great films with excellent deep-dive supplemental material. Lees meer
First is one of Matt's favourite films from 2025, Sentimental Value. This 4K edition of one of the newest films to enter the collection expands beyond your typical promotional material and interviews to provide filmmaking insights on director Joachim Trier's creative process and the interactions between all four of the film's Oscar-nominated main cast.
Then, in the spirit of the ending of spooky season, Matt selects the stunning 4K restoration of the previously out-of-print Peeping Tom from 1960. It's a film that still shocks today and effectively ending Michael Powell's career as a director. Decades after it was critically reviled, it is seen as a classic of horror and suspense. This second life of the film is the focus of this wonderful release.

22 september 2026 · 1 uur 5 min
The next in our Collector Conversation series sees Matt returning the favour and talking to Isaiah Shupe, the host of the Mr. Rewatchability podcast. He is also a big Criterion Collection fan, but seems to enjoy blind buying films just as much. He also talks about one of his favourite films of all time that is well overdue for a new physical media edition. Lees meer

Criterion Hall of Fame - Downhill Racer & L'Avventura
18 februari 2026 · 1 uur 3 min
With the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina currently in their final week, Matt has found a way to fit in a cheeky little on-brand homage to two of his favourite films in the Criterion Collection: one that is directly about a Winter Olympic sport, and another from a legendary director from northern Italy! Lees meer
First up is Michael Ritchie's New Hollywood sports film Downhill Racer, starring and produced by Robert Redford. It's a stripped down look at what it means for a high level athlete to pursue being the best, and how this kind of achievement does not only happen to decent and likable people. Then he gets to gush about the legendary Italian neo-realist masterpiece L'Avventura from the great Michelangelo Antonioni. It's a deliberately paced examination of the malaise of the upper class, even in the face of a friend and lover that has gone missing, that is regarded as a pillar of world cinema.

Criterion Hall of Fame: Kiss Me Deadly & The Red Shoes
11 november 2025 · 1 uur 10 min
The beginning of the month of November brings one of the annual Criterion Collection 50% off sales, so what better time for Matt's second installment of the Criterion Hall of Fame! Lees meer
For his second and third entries respectively, Matt revisits two of his all-time favourite Criterion releases. First up is the unflinching film noir Kiss Me Deadly, an adaptation of a Mickey Spillane novel that pulls no punches and is both a critique of the macho private investigator trope and a Cold War era shocker. After that, he divots to the colourful, vibrant, and melodramatic tale of a ballet company in The Red Shoes, where art and life become intertwined for an up-and-coming ballet star. Both films feature unforgettable scenes and a wealth of supplements to dive into, more than worthy of that big letter C in the top left corner.

Label Discovery: Vinegar Syndrome
2 november 2025 · 1 uur 29 min
In the next episode in his Label Discovery series, Matt takes a dive into a mainstay of boutique physical media that specializes in low budget and genre films: Vinegar Syndrome. It's a label that he is definitely familiar with as a company, but this is more based around their partner labels. Collecting Your Way
26 augustus 2025 · 1 uur 34 min
There are so many different ways to go about building your physical media collection, and the beauty of it is that there is no right or wrong way to go about it! Lees meer
For this episode of Cinema On A Shelf, Matt breaks down collecting into two focal points: the HOW and the WHERE. The "how" part of the discussion is a bit of a brainstorm of the different ways you can focus on what you add to your collection. (Genres? Franchises? Labels?) The "where" part of it is a little bit different in modern collecting, as physical media isn't in quite as many places as it used to be. This doesn't mean that there aren't a whole bunch of great options for finding your favourite films though! What does your way of collecting look like?
