Nathan MacDonald, *The Making of the Tabernacle and the Construction of Priestly Hegemony*. New York: Oxford University Press, 2023.

Through what mechanism did the Jerusalem high priests transition from serving as religious functionaries in the sixth century BCE to attaining political authority during the third or second century? This investigation examines the underlying conditions that facilitated the priesthood's ascendancy by analyzing the most significant theological texts pertaining to the high priests: the depiction of the holy tabernacle in the wilderness and the requirements for the priestly ordination ritual presented in Exodus and Leviticus. Although frequently disregarded by modern readers, who typically view them as specialized and monotonous, the tabernacle accounts garnered substantial scholarly interest from ancient scribes and audiences, as demonstrated by their preservation in at least four distinct versions. Clarifying the intricate transmission record yields important understanding into how these texts influenced—and were influenced by—conceptions of the priesthood's authority and qualifications throughout the Persian and early Hellenistic eras. The organizational structure illustrated demonstrates greater sophistication and complexity than previously recognized, incorporating Israelite craftspeople, community delegates, members of the Levitical class, and women within a sophisticated model of social hierarchy. The ordination ritual underwent considerable revision by scholarly scribes during the Persian era, surviving in at least five different versions as the role of the high priesthood underwent deliberation. Employing a thorough, comprehensive analytical framework that integrates perspectives from sociological inquiry, ritual theory, textual and literary examination, ancient interpretive sources, manuscript analysis, and historical linguistics, MacDonald's scholarship elucidates the historical development, theological significance, and ideological dimensions of priestly literature.

John Martens and Kristine Henriksen Garroway, *Children and Methods: Listening To and Learning From Children in the Biblical World*. Leiden: Brill, 2020.

This carefully selected compilation, assembled by Kristine Henriksen Garroway and John W. Martens with considerable sensitivity, presents a multidisciplinary collection of scholarly essays that examines the circumstances and significance of children across the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, and the broader ancient world.
While scholarly engagement with children has expanded substantially throughout numerous academic disciplines, a notable absence exists in our methodological approaches to comprehending and drawing insights from children's perspectives within ancient Jewish and Christian traditions—an absence warranting rigorous examination.
The essays contained herein provide a sensitive framework, acknowledging that although conventional higher critical methodologies yield important understanding regarding children's circumstances in antiquity, a more comprehensive comprehension develops when we deliberately synthesize these established methodologies with the contemporary discipline of Childist Criticism. By employing this synthesized analytical framework, we may at last discern children's perspectives and recognize their significance in ancient textual sources with enhanced precision and nuance.

Josephus' Antiquities offers a thoughtful and detailed exploration of Jewish history, tracing its arc from the world's origins to the outbreak of the Jewish War. Yet we might pause to consider a meaningful question: whose stories truly shape this historical record? This examination compassionately investigates how Josephus portrayed Moses, David, Judas Maccabee, and Agrippa I, recognizing how he drew upon Roman exempla as his literary framework. In doing so, Josephus crafted these four Jewish leaders in ways that honored both Roman structural and formal conventions while authentically preserving their deeply Jewish identity. Through this nuanced approach, Josephus achieves something remarkable—he not only demonstrates that Jewish exemplary figures deserve recognition equal to their Roman counterparts, but he ultimately surpasses Roman achievements in their celebrated domains of superiority, enduring legacy, and unwavering moral integrity.

Shawn Zelig Aster's monograph establishes a compelling connection between First Isaiah's prophecies and the eighth century BCE historical landscape, when Assyrian power dominated the ancient Near East. Through meticulous analysis of Isaiah 1–2, 6–8, 10–12, 14, 19, 31, and 36–37, Aster exposes how these passages deliver a sophisticated challenge to Assyrian imperial propaganda. He reveals that Isaiah strategically employs Assyrian propagandistic motifs while systematically dismantling their claims of absolute supremacy, demonstrating that the prophet's ultimate purpose is to strengthen belief in a transcendent, omnipotent God whose authority eclipses any mortal empire. This work illuminates the profound meaning embedded within these Isaiah passages while situating them firmly within Judah and Israel's turbulent history spanning 745–701 BCE.

Yaacov Maoz, *Jerusalem and Nineveh: The Renewal of Aramit-Ashurit in Israel and the Alliance between Israel and Assyria*. Toronto [English Version]: Self-Published by the Author on behalf of *Lishana: Aramit Renewal in Israel*, 2025.

This is the first time a work has been produced to jointly document the history of the Assyrian Christian and Jewish peoples. The two civilizations occupy positions within a restricted collection of peoples whose endeavors and achievements fundamentally altered the course of human civilization. The domains of archaeological investigation, religious observance, ethnic composition, hereditary inheritance, cultural expression, and linguistic systems within these societies remain fundamentally interconnected. This publication reveals numerous unexpected discoveries concerning biblical historical narratives. It substantiates the claim that "Aramit-Ashurit" operates as the secondary sacred language of the Jewish people, and it documents the extensive and pervasive presence of Assyrian civilization throughout Jewish religious heritage. The work pursues the objective of safeguarding the living spoken form of Jewish Aramit, and therefore emphasizes the critical necessity of eliminating the widespread false claim asserting that Jews from Assyrian regions are ethnically Kurdish and that the Aramit language represents a Kurdish linguistic variant. Throughout numerous centuries, Kurdish authorities systematically perpetrated grave mistreatment against Jewish populations under their rule, subjecting them to conditions resembling slavery, perpetrating kidnappings and sexual violence against Jewish women, and committing persistent acts of robbery and murder directed against Jewish communities. This historical reality has remained largely unrecognized in public awareness, and the present era demands its submission to public scrutiny.

This in-depth exploration examines the Old Testament Apocrypha—respected ancient Jewish texts that have gained deutero-canonical recognition in some Christian traditions, remain excluded from canons in others, and continue to shape cultural discourse profoundly.
Extending well beyond standard scholarly approaches like literary criticism, historical research, and tradition-historical study, the essays masterfully reveal the key social and theological movements embedded within each individual work.
Crafted by a network of distinguished international scholars, this Handbook serves as a vital authoritative reference capturing the current state of Apocrypha research while simultaneously opening new directions for scholarly exploration.
Accordingly, this Handbook presents a comprehensive overview of the complex Apocrypha and related fields by showcasing contemporary scholarship that positions each apocryphal text within its historical context, spanning from the late Persian period and early Hellenistic era through the emerging Roman age.
The collected essays thoroughly investigate how the Apocrypha fits within Early Judaism's intricate framework, their complex relationships with texts later recognized as canonical, their evolving connections to the Septuagint, Qumran findings, the Pseudepigrapha, and New Testament literature, plus their significant influence throughout Western culture.
Many chapters address broad thematic areas—including literary forms and historical reliability, Jewish practices and beliefs, theological and moral perspectives, gender roles and women's participation, and the complexities of sexual ethics.

This monograph presents a comprehensive examination, incorporating case studies, of how biblical texts—particularly those addressing warfare and rituals in the Old Testament—relate to the contemporary concept of moral injury as understood across psychology, military studies, philosophy, and ethics. The work simultaneously addresses two central inquiries: First, in what manner does the examination of biblical texts, especially narratives depicting war and violence, enhance our comprehension of emerging moral injury research? Second, what contributions does the scholarly analysis and interpretation of biblical texts offer to the broader conversation regarding moral injury across multiple disciplines, with particular emphasis on veterans, military chaplains, and other professionals? The monograph begins by elucidating the concept of moral injury as it has developed within psychology, military studies, chaplaincy, and moral philosophy, drawing substantially from the documented experiences of United States military veterans engaged in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
A significant dimension of this research has concentrated on identifying mechanisms for healing, recovery, and restoration among individuals who have experienced moral injury resulting from combat exposure or comparable circumstances. A critical element of this scholarly endeavor is that moral injury research has increasingly drawn upon ancient texts and civilizations to establish frameworks that characterize moral injury and propose evidence-based approaches for prevention and therapeutic intervention. Such references have periodically encompassed Old Testament texts that document war-related rituals, practices, and experiences (for instance, Numbers 31).
Additionally, scholarly investigation into moral injury across various academic disciplines has employed ancient texts in a distinctive approach—namely, to offer novel reinterpretations of classical literary characters as embodim…

Nathaniel Deutsch, Tony Michels and Alma Rachel Heckman, *Radical Jewish Politics: A Global Perspective*. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 2026.

This groundbreaking study illuminates the compelling yet frequently overlooked legacy of radical Jewish political movements across the Middle East and North Africa, while establishing crucial connections to parallel developments in the Americas, South Africa, Soviet Asia, and Europe. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Jews gravitated toward radical politics driven by dual motivations: the desire to fundamentally transform their societies and an intense longing for genuine belonging. Strikingly, radical politics presented Jews with an enticing promise of normalization, despite frequently resulting in deepened alienation or intensified persecution.
Jewish radicals pursued divergent paths: some demanded recognition and self-determination as Jews, others pursued full integration as equal citizens within their nations, and still others chose to reject their Jewish identity entirely. The multifaceted Jewish encounters with modernity, colonialism, race, nationalism, emancipation, warfare, and displacement collectively constitute the dynamic narrative of radical Jewish politics spanning from Baghdad to Buenos Aires.

For the very first time, the novel *Dineh* is now available in English translation. This autobiographical work in Yiddish by Ida Maze (1893–1962), published posthumously, has been translated by Yermiyahu Ahron Taub.
*Dineh* is a poignant yet beautiful pastoral tale and a coming-of-age narrative seen through the eyes of a young girl. Set in what is present-day Belarus, the main character is motivated by her thirst for knowledge, her connections to family and community, and her passion for nature. Maze expertly intertwines Dineh’s story with those of others, particularly women and girls from her community.
We meet the mysterious seamstress Shprintse; Beyle, who leaves her home to become a maid in Minsk; and Hinde, who discovers love with a young nobleman, among many other unforgettable characters. Maze courageously examines the lives of women, tackling themes such as class disparities, unrequited love, violence (both domestic and state-sponsored), and the perils of childbirth.
She also explores the experiences of non-Jews and the interactions between Jews and non-Jews. The narrative is driven by the tightening grip of Tsarist anti-Semitism, the increasing restrictions on Jewish economic survival, and the rise of revolutionary movements.
In summary, *Dineh* provides a haunting insight into rural, village, and small-town life in White Russia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This monograph investigates the "Rewritten Bible" genre, which narrates the history of ancient Israel independently from the biblical text. It suggests that the author's portrayal of ancient prophets and patriarchs was shaped more by regional influences than by religious ones. *Pirqe de-Rabbi Eliezer* (PRE) is particularly noteworthy for incorporating several legends about biblical figures that are absent from the classical rabbinic texts of Talmud and Midrash. Contemporary scholars regard the non-rabbinic legends in PRE as remnants of Second Temple literature within Jewish tradition. However, this study aims to interpret the non-rabbinic elements in PRE as a result of the author's integration and modification of influences from the surrounding Christian and Muslim cultures, rather than through a direct lineage of Second Temple texts among Jews. This hypothesis will be assessed by analyzing two works that are similar to PRE in both form and content: Jubilees (second century BCE) and the Cave of Treasures (sixth century CE).
