S14 Ep51: One-Hit Wonder
25 mei 2026 · 52 min
The 2016 Giro d’Italia was the first edition covered end to end, on the ground, by The Cycling Podcast, and what a race it proved to be. A thrilling last week saw Steven Kruijswijk fall at the last hurdle, almost literally, and Vincenzo Nibali mount an extraordinary comeback. But neither of these stories could rival stage 15 to Alpe di Siusi and more specifically the victory of rank outsider Alexander Foliforov for sheer shock value. Lees meer
Foliforov disappeared almost as quickly as he burst onto the scene, retiring two years after his Giro stage win. Since then he has become a meme, a sort of post-ironic legend, but above all an enigma: what mysterious force propelled him to victory that day, and where has he vanished to over the last ten years?
Exactly a decade on from the Russian’s greatest day, Daniel Friebe tracked him down and invited Foliforov to relive and explain one of the strangest days and results in recent Giro history.
One-Hit Wonder was written and produced by Daniel Friebe. Music is by Amaraterra.

S14 Ep50: Viva Somarriba!
25 mei 2026 · 55 min
Grab a round of agua con gas and listen in as Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton review the Spanish stage racing block. Lees meer
With many of the big hitters away making preparations for the forthcoming Giro d’Italia, the short stage races of Itzulia and Vuelta a Burgos provided plenty of surprises and breakthroughs. On a rare opportunity from domestique duties, Mischa Bredewold led the charge for SD Worx who looked back to their old imperious best. But what does the win mean for a team that already have so many champions in their roster? Yara Kastellijn’s huge victory on the final day of Burgos cemented a phenomenal few weeks for the rider who has been without a win since her breakthrough at the Tour de France Femmes in 2023. Plus, did FDJ United Suez make the wrong call in Itzulia by not backing young British star Lauren Dickson?
In our mini feature we speak to the last Spanish rider (before Paula Blasi this year) to win a women’s Grand Tour. That champion is Joane Somarriba, a rider who twice won the Giro Feminile and three times won Tour de France Femmes precursor the Grand Boucle. She talks about her journey to the top, overcoming hospitalisation and prejudice to become one the best riders of the late 90s and early 2000s.
We also look ahead to this year's Giro d’Italia Women which begins at the end of the month. The Cycling Podcast Féminin will be bringing listeners daily coverage of the race for the first time, starting on 30th May.
Also on the agenda: the ambience of shopping malls, virtual sangrias and Denny’s dream of being paid in cheese.

S14 Ep43: The Dukes of Hazard
18 mei 2026 · 24 min
Long-time regulars on The Cycling Podcast’s Giro d’Italia coverage, in this year’s edition Matt White and Max Sciandri are directing operations, together, from the front seat of the Movistar team car. Lees meer
Australia and Italy, fire and ice, they make an intriguing duo, but can it be a successful one at this year’s Giro? We went behind the scenes on the day of their boldest tactical plan yet, on stage 4 of the Giro to Cosenza, to get a sense of how their partnership is galvanising the Spanish team at this year’s Giro. Daniel Friebe then summoned Matt and Max the following morning for a debrief and typically mirthful discussion of what they each bring to their roles.
The Cycling Podcast would like to thank Velon for their assistance in the making of this podcast.

S14 Ep36: Arrivée: Vuelta Femenina
11 mei 2026 · 57 min
There’s both plenty of racing and plenty of Spanish omelettes for Rose Manley and Rebecca Charlton to get their teeth stuck into in this special Arrivée episode on the Vuelta Femenina. Lees meer
With seven days of racing ranging from the pretty bumpy to the vertiginously mountainous, including a historic first summit finish on the Angliru, expect no shortage of drama from this first ‘Grand Tour’ of the year. With back-to-back champion Demi Vollering choosing not to compete this year, a brand new champion was set to be crowned, but who could it be? Would Tour de France Femmes champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot back up her Grand Tour credentials in Spain? Could Anna van der Breggen show that she’s back to her stage racing best? Or might this be the crowning moment for a surprising young star?
Also on the agenda: free jazz race reportage, unwanted gifts and Denny Gray’s 4am McDonald’s order.

S14 Ep32: 2026 Giro d’Italia | The Preview
5 mei 2026 · 1 uur 33 min
On Friday, the first Grand Tour of the season rolls out from Bulgaria, not Italy – and, as always, we’ll be there, on the ground, to bring you all the action from the Giro d’Italia. Lees meer
This year’s “Corsa Rosa” starts here, with our race preview and the troika who’ll take you on the journey to Rome over the next three weeks: Daniel Friebe, Brian Nygaard and Michele Pelacci. Before sinking our teeth into the Giro, though, we discuss the first big headline of the week: Paul Seixas’s announcement that he’ll be riding the Tour de France.
It’s then time to talk about the Giro, focusing first on the favourites, then moving into the beautiful canvas upon which Jonas Vingegaard et al. will hopefully create cycling art over the next three weeks.

S14 Ep31: Girovino!! | The Wines of the 2026 Giro
4 mei 2026 · 36 min
Every year, as the Giro d'Italia approaches, we ease into our coverage with an episode that has — ostensibly — nothing to do with racing bikes. Any listeners with a passing interest in wine, stay with us. Everyone else, there are plenty of other episodes in our build-up to the Grande Partenza that will be more up your strada. Lees meer
The Cycling Podcast has been on the ground at every Giro since 2016, and the lesson we keep relearning is that these races can't really be separated from the places that host them. The culture, the land, the things it grows and makes — all of it is part of the story. It was with that in mind that we headed to D Vine Cellars HQ in London last week for the unveiling of our 2026 Girovagando selection (link to buy and list of wines in the shownotes below), with Greg Andrews the master of ceremonies.

S14 Ep30: Ineos Turn to AI to Get the Pulse Racing
30 april 2026 · 1 uur 11 min
The spring Classics campaign has come to an end and the Giro d'Italia is just around the corner. To bridge the gap between the two, and with Daniel Friebe absent as he prepares for the Giro, Lionel Birnie is joined by Tudor Pro Cycling's Larry Warbasse to wrap up the first part of the season, look ahead to the first Grand Tour of the year and react to some huge sponsorship news which may help Ineos Grenadiers challenge for the Tour de France once again. Lees meer
In part one Larry updates on the Tour of the Alps, where he and a lot of riders were fine-tuning their form ahead of the Giro and one of his teammates made a rapid and successful transition from speed skating to elite level cycling with a stage win. He also talks about his version of the all-day-breakfast and heat training indoors.
In the second part, Lionel reports back from the big reveal which confirmed a new title sponsor for Ineos Grenadiers. From the Giro d'Italia they will be Netcompany-Ineos thanks to backing from a Danish IT company that is pumping in a figure thought to be around €100m over five years. The target is for the team to win an eighth Tour de France in the next five years, but its the introduction of Netcompany's AI software, Pulse, which makes this more than just a sponsorship deal. Pulse, which is used at several major airports, including Heathrow, will be used to help the team make 'better decisions more often'. We ask whether its use can extend beyond logistics and training and start to influence racing strategy and tactics.
In the final part, we tie up all the loose ends from the spring and turn our attentions towards the Giro before handing over to Daniel and co for daily coverage of the Corsa Rosa, which starts in Bulgaria on Friday, May 8.

The Cycling Podcast returns in perhaps the most eagerly anticipated week of the season, to look back in more detail at Sunday’s Tour of Flanders and ahead to Paris-Roubaix at the weekend. Lees meer
Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are joined by former team manager and press chief Brian Nygaard as we reflect on the story that dominated the build-up to Flanders: Remco Evenepoel’s shock announcement that he would start for Redbull-BORA-hansgrohe after months of denials. Are the media entitled to feel upset at being misled, or is all ultimately fair in love and the war for eyeballs?
We hear what Hugo Coorevits thinks, and also what’s on his mind ahead of the “Hell of the North”. Do only the redoubtable pavés of northern France stand between Tadej Pogačar and his next piece of history – or will Van der Poel, Van Aert et al. halt his march towards a Monument Grand Slam?

Get those waffles out of your cupboard and dig in as Rose Manley and Lizzy Banks discuss the 2026 edition of the women’s Tour of Flanders. Lees meer
An all star cast of riders lined up to face the 15 cobbled sections and climbs of the Ronde Van Vlaanderen. Amongst them, record holding three time winner Lotte Kopecky who has been on sporadic form this season and two time champion Elisa Longo Borghini who heads up a firing UAE Team ADQ. The race also offers up a number of other conundrums. Can Dwars door Vlaanderen winner Marlen Reusser double up and take a second Flandrian win this week? Will Demi Vollering finally add a Flanders title to her palmares? Might Lorena Wiebes survive the climbs and go for the win?
Also on the agenda: Lizzy builds a Noah’s Ark for cats and the waffle-o-meter gets a grilling.

30 maart 2026 · 1 uur 26 min
The Cycling Podcast returns to recap the latest round of cobbled Classics, with the E3 Saxo Classic and In Flanders Fields neatly teeing up the Ronde van Vlaanderen this weekend. Lees meer
Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie examine both races in detail, looking at how Alpecin-Premier Tech made it another superb weekend for them. First up was Mathieu van der Poel’s latest cobbled clinic in E3…not that he didn’t leave us guessing until the final kilometre. A similarly nailbiting pursuit match the following day saw MvdP reunited with old foe Wout Van Aert, though it was Jasper Philipsen who finally prevailed.
We ask what this all means for the big one at the weekend, with a little help from faithful Flandrian correspondent Hugo Coorevits. We also cover the big talking points from the Volta a Catalunya, which was dominated by Jonas Vingegaard.

Whether you’re a Milano Sanremo stan or a Milano Sanremo can’t-stand-it, you’ll want to listen to this Arrivée episode covering the women’s race.
With a couple of big names not making it to the startline, the race to the Via Roma looked to be turned on its head. Crashes, breakaways and fierce battles on the Cipressa and Poggio all came into play in a dramatic 2026 edition, only the second ever official Milan-Sanremo for the women.

S14 Ep13: Winner Winner Trofeo Binda
20 maart 2026 · 1 uur 2 min
Dai dai dai! No that’s not a threat, that’s our call to come and listen to our latest episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin where we are taking a look at the Italian Classics block. Lizzy Banks makes her much hoped-for return to the podcast to join Rose Manley, Rebecca Charlton and Denny Gray as we discuss a drama packed Strade Bianche and an equally surprising Trofeo Binda. Lees meer
In our mini feature we look at the history and significance of Trofeo Binda, a race that is often overlooked in favour of races with a men’s equivalent but has long been a firm favourite among the peloton. We hear from twice winner and this year’s super domestique Elisa Longo Borghini, former British champ and winner of the 2018 junior race Pfeiffer Georgi and bici.PRO chief editor Enzo Vicennati. We dig deeper into the unique elements of this race, one of the oldest on the women’s calendar, and explore its connection to 1920s cycling icon Alfredo Binda.
And lastly we look ahead – or perhaps don’t – to Milan-Sanremo and the raft of cobbled classics that follows.
Also on the agenda: an Elisa Longo Borghini panino, Denny speaks Mandarin (but does he really?) and Rebecca’s goes all quasi psychologist on us with a theory that encompasses Milan-Sanremo fandom and university dissertation punctuality.

S14 Ep12: Cliffhanger
18 maart 2026 · 1 uur 32 min
The Cycling Podcast returns for another round-up of a packed and intriguing last week in professional cycling, with Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico completing their respective journeys and Milan-Sanremo on the horizon. Lees meer
Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Rob Hatch look first at Paris-Nice, where Jonas Vingegaard served up a timely reminder of his credentials ahead of his Giro-Tour double bid. We discuss Redbull–BORA–hansgrohe’s tactics on the decisive stage to Uchon, a thrilling team time trial and Lenny Martínez’s tactical masterclass on the final stage. The focus then switches to Tirreno, where good friends Isaac del Toro and Giulio Pellizzari turned rivals, with the Mexican ultimately prevailing.
In the final part of the episode, we look ahead to the great cliffhanger of the spring season, Milano-Sanremo, and particularly Tadej Pogačar’s latest bid to win there. There’s a trip to Coorevits Corner, former winner Pippo Pozzato’s advice for Pogačar, and another interview with the Slovenian’s own dedicated Sanremo coach, former rider and local boy Niccolò Bonifazio.

Tadej Pogačar made his return to racing at Strade Bianche at the weekend, and it was a familiar story for him, his rivals and those watching. What for one set of fans was yet another sublime and glorious exhibition, for others represented just the continuation of a monotonous, all-too-familiar theme. Lees meer
Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Brian Nygaard debate what Pog’s first solo recital of 2026 stirred in them, and we also consider to what extent Paul Seixas’s remarkable performance could herald the beginning of an era-defining rivalry.
There’s a round-up of what’s been happening in France at Paris-Nice and in Italy at Tirreno-Adriatico, plus some rare speculation about INEOS’s future.

S14 Ep10: Poel Party
2 maart 2026 · 1 uur 18 min
The Classics season has truly commenced, with Opening Weekend out of the way and regular trio Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Rob Hatch back to analyse the key takeaways from two intense days of racing on the cobbles and hellingen of Flanders. Lees meer
On Saturday, Mathieu van der Poel’s latest masterclass suggested it could be a long spring for some of his rivals. MVDP’s eternal antagonist, Wout Van Aert, was absent from Visma-Lease a Bike’s line-up through illness, but that team could at least console themselves with Matthew Brennan’s superb victory in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne on Sunday. We review both races and what they said about the coming weeks, with help from the ultimate authority on springtime racing in Belgium, Hugo Coorevits.
It was also a busy weekend in France, and a delirious one for patriotic French fans. Paul Seixas’s dominant performance at the Faun Ardèche Classic on Saturday prompted former rider turned pundit Jérôme Pineau to hail Seixas as “already the third best rider in the world”. We evaluate those claims and look ahead to Seixas’s first clash of the season with Tadej Pogačar at Strade Bianche.

26 februari 2026 · 1 uur 19 min
It’s another packed week of early-season racing, as we look back on the key action from the UAE, Andalusia and the Algarve last week – and ahead to Belgium’s Opening Weekend. Lees meer
Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Rob Hatch focus first on the Volta ao Algarve, where Paul Seixas cranked up the hype around his short and long-term future with a stunning stage win and top-three overall finish. The winner of that race overall was Juan Ayuso, now of Lidl-Trek and formerly UAE. The rider who some might argue made Ayuso expendable at UAE, Isaac del Toro, ruled the roost at the UAE Tour.
Our Omloop Nieuwsblad preview is also an opportunity to find out whether there’s any truth to rumours about perhaps the biggest star of the recent Winter Olympics joining Uno-X. Team manager Thor Hushovd sets us straight on that, plus we visit our own Belgian Classics oracle in Coorevits Corner.

19 februari 2026 · 1 uur 17 min
It’s been another frantic week in the world of pro cycling, with early season races in several parts of southern Europe and the Middle East. Tudor Pro Cycling’s Larry Warbasse, who began his season at the Tour of Oman, is back in the co-host’s seat with Daniel Friebe to review some of the key action and talking points. Lees meer
The most prestigious of the races starting this week, at least according to the UCI’s ranking system, is the UAE Tour. Many expected a revealing first head-to-head battle between Remco Evenepoel and Isaac Del Toro, and indeed they emerged from the first three stages with a win apiece. Only one of the pair, though, will have been satisfied with his GC position with the final showdown at Jebel Hafeet to come – and that was Del Toro.
Larry and Daniel discuss Evenepoel’s struggles at the other Jebel, Mobrah, and ponder what they say about the rest of his season. We also talk about some other prodigious talents that have been in spotlight early this year, wayward leadouts and Pinarello Q36.5’s recent trip to Chile, as described to us by Fred Wright.

The Cycling Podcast returns with another debrief from the latest round of early-season racing, this week focusing on the Volta Comunitat Valenciana and the Tour of Oman. Lees meer
Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Rob Hatch discuss Remco Evenepoel’s most recent tour de force in Spain and Astana’s similarly fast start to the season, with Christian Scaroni winning in the Middle East. Scaroni also lays claim to one of the best nicknames in the pro peloton (clue in the episode title), but we learn that a new contender for that title may have emerged in Oman.
It was a busy week on other fronts, with Jonas Vingegaard’s coach leaving Visma-Lease a Bike, Marc Soler dragged into a minor family drama in Spain, and news of a new Lance Armstrong biopic. All that and more in another feisty episode!

S14 Ep6: Shock, honour!
12 februari 2026 · 54 min
...SURPRISE! Gotcha. Yes the mini feature in this month's episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin is all about two surprising wins from last season. We'll be hearing from reigning world champion Magdaleine Vallieres about her huge shock win last September and from podcast favourite Lotte Claes about the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad victory which upset all the big hitters last February. Lees meer
Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton will also be covering the less surprising UAE Tour where Elisa Longo Borghini took the overall title for the third time and Lorena Wiebes claimed all three sprint stages. The less than thrilling racing does however give the team the chance to look more closely at superstar Wiebes. An athlete who makes a credible bid for the title of best sprinter that has ever been but is still so often overlooked by both media and fans.
You can hear more from world champion Magdaleine Vallieres in our forthcoming Friends Special, an exclusive for Friends of The Podcast subscribers. Hear about the 1,000km bikepacking trip that sparked her imagination as a nine-year-old in Quebec, her difficult transition into the elite ranks and her rise to claim the rainbow stripes.
Also on the agenda: nominative determinism jumpers, the mystery of the fan club president's notebook and the briefest of peeks at Denny's crystal balls.

S14 Ep5: Green Card
5 februari 2026 · 1 uur 13 min
With the racing hotting up all over the pro cycling world, we return with the same Friebe-Birnie-Hatch trio as last week to review the latest action and talking points. Lees meer
The biggest news story of the week was ASO’s decision to hand Spanish outfit Caja Rural a Tour de France wild card at the expense of the Unibet Rose Rockets. We discuss to what extent Caja’s place on the startline in Barcelona is justified and the case for the opposition i.e. the Rockets.
One man who’ll certainly be heading to the Tour, barring accident, is Remco Evenepoel. His three wins in his first three outings for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe in Mallora augur well for the rest of season. Daniel’s question is: could Remco even be the man to ruin Tadej Pogačar’s Sanremo dream?
Another candidate for that role, of course, is Mathieu van der Poel. He won his eighth world cyclocross title at the weekend, which has us wondering about the Winter Olympics extending his career in the discipline.
