  4. S13 Ep112: Elvis Pedersen and Do Ineos Grenadiers Need To Be All Shook Up?

    15 augustus 2025 · 1 uur 26 min

    Afspelen
In this bumper episode of The Cycling Podcast, Lionel Birnie, Graham Willgoss and Brian Nygaard ask where Ineos Grenadiers go from here? Lees meer

Thymen Arensman saved a disappointing Tour de France with two memorable stage wins in the mountains, but Carlos Rodriguez crashed out when his bid for a high finish looked like it had stalled on the cusp of the top ten.

With Dave Brailsford returning to the Tour after a stint at Manchester United Football Club it became apparent just how far the team has drifted since the days when they dominated the race, winning seven editions in eight years between 2012 and 2019.

Geraint Thomas is approaching retirement as a rider but could he be the man to galvanise the team off the bike? Or is it simply a case that Ineos have been overtaken by a handful of teams who have been quicker at identifying and recruiting new talent and more ruthless in calling time on riders who've gone over the summit in their careers?

Before that, Lionel, Graham and Brian recap the week's racing as the cycling season splinters across Europe in this period between the Tour de France and Vuelta a España. And in the final part we hear from journalist Sophie Smith about her trip to the north of Norway to cover the Arctic Race.

  5. S13 Ep111: Movers And Shakers: Remco To Red Bull, Vingegaard To The Vuelta

    7 augustus 2025 · 1 uur 7 min

    Afspelen
In our first episode since the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes, Lionel Birnie and Graham Willgoss are joined by Brian Nygaard to recap a busy week of racing during this in-between period before attention turns to the third and final grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a España, gets underway later this month. Lees meer

The week's news has been dominated by the confirmation that Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal-Quick Step before the end of his contract, transferring to the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe squad at the end of the year. What does it mean for Remco, but also his current and future teams?

We recap the racing from the Clasica San Sebastian to the Tour of Poland plus events in northern Spain and France. Then we look back to the Tour de France and get Brian's perspective on Jonas Vingegaard's performance. The Dane is the outstanding favourite for a Pogačar-free Vuelta but is it time for him to accept that the Tour is out of his reach unless the Slovenian is absent?

  18. S13 Ep98: KM0: One Wild Night On Ventoux

    25 juli 2025 · 40 min

    Afspelen
A month or so before the Tour de France, Lionel Birnie and Graham Willgoss were discussing ideas for KM0 episodes... Lees meer

'How about camping on Mont Ventoux?' said Lionel.

    'Yes!' said Graham.

And so Lionel packed a tent, airbed and sleeping bag and decided not to book a hotel near the Giant of Provence so there could be no turning back.

After picking up camping equipment for Graham at the Nîmes branch of Decathlon, they set off up the mountain to meet Simon Gill, who was in his camper van. The original plan was to camp in the forest, where other Tour spectators were setting up for the night. However, police restrictions on the crowds and vehicles meant Lionel and Graham could not risk being stuck down the mountain, 10km from the summit, on race day, so they soldier on, past Chalet-Reynard and the shelter of the tree-line and up to the bald, rocky peak.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience – as in something they will not repeat in a hurry. Unforgettable in its own way as they braved the strong winds.

Who knew Ventoux could be windy? Well, the clue is in the name for a start, and remember the last time the Tour was scheduled to finish at the top of the climb, in 2016, when high winds forced the organisers to bring the line down to Chalet-Reynard?

This is the story of Lionel, Graham and Simon's wild night on the mountain.

  20. S13 Ep96: KM0: Never Go Back? Why Questions From The Past Continue To Haunt Brailsford

    24 juli 2025 · 36 min

    Afspelen
This episode of KM0 tackles Dave Brailsford's return to Ineos Grenadiers and the Tour de France, the scene of his greatest sporting triumphs. Lees meer

Between 2012 and 2019, Team Sky and then Ineos Grenadiers won seven out of eight editions of the Tour. However, there had been controversies along the way – therapeutic use exemptions to permit their key riders to take otherwise prohibited medication, therefore pushing right up to the line in terms of what is allowed by the rules. The jiffy bag incident. Letting riders and staff members go in the wake of the 2012 reasoned decision by the United States Anti-Doping Agency into Lance Armstrong's doping, and their team doctor through the glory years, Richard Freeman, getting struck off by the general medical council for his conduct while working in cycling.

After a spell at Ineos Sport, overseeing Jim Ratcliffe's sporting empire, and an unsuccessful period with Manchester United football club, Brailsford returned to the cycling team on the eve of the Tour de France with all the enthusiasm of a kid in a sweet shop, according to team CEO John Allert.

But since the start in Lille, allegations from Team Sky's past have stalked Brailsford. It concerns their head carer, a Slovenian called David Rozman, who had been involved in the Operation Aderlass doping investigation relating to alleged text messages between him and Dr Mark Schmidt, subsequently jailed for doping offences, shortly before the 2012 Tour.

Brailsford and the team initially said they would not be commenting on the allegations but today (Thursday) they confirmed Rozman had been contacted by the International Testing Agency regarding the alleged texts, initially informally.

Lionel Birnie delves into the background, examines Brailsford's comeback and talks to David Walsh about why he has more questions to answer about what went on in 2012.

In our mini feature, we explore Breton cycling in light of next week’s Tour de France Femmes Grand Départ in Brittany. The Cycling Podcast favourite François Thomazeau explains the history and heritage of the region, plus we hear from two Breton riders that have had outstanding Tours de France in recent years: Cédrine Kerbaol of EF Education Oatly and Maeva Squiban of UAE Team ADQ.

  32. S13 Ep84: KM0: The Great French Cook-Off with EF Pro Cycling Chef Owen Blandy

    16 juli 2025 · 36 min

    Afspelen
On the evening of the first Tour de France rest day, Lionel Birnie and Graham Willgoss headed to the EF Education-Easy Post team hotel on the outskirts of town for dinner. Lees meer

There, they met the team's chef, Owen Blandy, a keen amateur racer who quit his job in finance to pursue a dream, combining his love of cycling with a passion for cooking. For Owen, preparing the meals for the riders is an ever-changing challenge. First there's the sheer logistics of driving a catering truck that wouldn't look out of place at a street food festival around France, sourcing the ingredients and designing a menu that not only tastes great but gives the riders the right balance of nutrition to perform at their best in the most demanding race in the world.

With Ben Healy in the yellow jersey it was a busy day for everyone on the team and while there was not necessarily any extra pressure on evening meal service, there was an additional sense of pride in fuelling the race leader.

Forget The Great British Bake-Off, this is the Great French Cook-Off... how does a team chef prepare the food for riders tackling 3,500 kilometres and, most importantly, what does it taste like? Normally Owen's food is reserved exclusively for the riders – the team staff usually have whatever's on the hotel menu but they hover around after the riders have eaten to see if there's any leftovers. So, we felt very lucky to get a taste of Owen's food and the chance to eat a meal fit for the maillot jaune.

Then Lionel and Graham turn cookery contest judges and, as you can see from our episode artwork, Owen earned a handshake from Graham in the style of the Bake-Off judge Paul Hollywood.

In 1986, Shelley Verses became the first woman to work as a soigneur at the Tour de France, when she was part of the American 7-Eleven team's support staff. Lees meer

Shelley had been at the Giro d'Italia with 7-Eleven the previous year but the attitudes towards women being involved in professional cycling were such that she was confined to duties at the team hotel. That changed at the 1986 Tour when she was able to work in the feed zone.

A month ago, Shelley contacted Lionel Birnie keen to share her stories from life on the road and so this is the first part of a series called Chapter & Verses. The first three parts focus on her early days as a soigneur in cycling and the 1986 Tour.

Of the ten 7-Eleven riders, only Doug Shapiro had experienced the Tour before, and so the whole team – on and off the bike – were going into the unknown. This is Shelley's story.

The publicity caravan has been a Tour de France institution for almost a century. Introduced in 1930 by the race founder Henri Desgrange to generate much needed funds for the Tour, the cavalcade of promotional vehicles that precedes the race has grown to become a much-loved spectacle for millions of roadside fans every summer. It's bright, colourful and noisy and during Tuesday's fifth stage The Cycling Podcast's Graham Willgoss was part of the show.

He had a place on one of the Basic Fit floats, promoting a chain of French gyms. He joined the happy, enthusiastic (mostly) young people for their pre-race dance to get the energy levels pumping ahead of the stage.

If you are going to Lille for the opening weekend make sure to drop in at Van Rysel House, a pop-up venue and hub for cycling fans. It’s located at Hein Estaminet in Place Saint-Hubert a short walk from the Euralille train station. It’s a place to have a drink or something to eat and watch the race on TV and there’ll be lots going on over the weekend with a quiz night to test your cycling knowledge each night at 8pm. There’s also some group rides setting out from there. A chance to see the Van Rysel bikes and the innovation that goes into their design.

  46. S13 Ep70: The XL Tour de France Preview, Part One

    2 juli 2025 · 53 min

Join Lionel Birnie, Graham Willgoss, Rob Hatch and François Thomazeau for the first part of The Cycling Podcast’s bumper Tour de France preview. Lees meer

This episode focuses on the first half of the 112th Tour, which will take the riders from Lille in the north east, across to Normandy and Brittany before cutting down through the heart of France to the Massif Central.

The head-to-head battle between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard is currently tied at 2-2, with the Slovenian winning in 2021 and 2024 and the Dane taking back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023. But, as closely-matched as they often seem, none of those four clashes has been particularly close and, as we saw at the Dauphiné last month, Pogačar seems to have the upper hand at the moment.

So, will we see a battle royale between the Three Tenors – © Rob Hatch – with Remco Evenepoel one of the riders most suited to a punchy, scrappy opening week, especially with a time trial to contend with?

François breaks down the route and explains what we have to look forward to before the first rest day after ten stages.

Part two of The XL Tour de France Preview will be online soon...

INTRODUCING VAN RYSEL, OUR TOUR DE FRANCE SPONSORS
We are very pleased to welcome Van Rysel as our sponsors for the first half of our Tour de France coverage. The Tour gets underway in Lille, the city where the company was founded and has its headquarters. The city is steeped in French cycling history and heritage, not least because the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix are on the doorstep.

Van Rysel supplies bikes and kit for the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale World Tour team, who feature Felix Gall, Bruno Armirail and Aurélien Paret-Peintre in their line-up for the Tour.

But while João Almeida's overall victory had a feeling of inevitability about it as soon as he reached the midway checkpoint in the final time trial, the week was perhaps more revealing about the two riders who joined him on the podium.

We hear from third-placed Oscar Onley, who won a stage and put together the best stage race performance of his career as he prepares to head to the Tour for Picnic Post NL. And we discuss Kevin Vauquelin's credentials as a potential star for the home nation at the Tour. He won a stage during the opening weekend in Italy last week and he very nearly delivered a huge result for an Arkea-B&B Hotels team that has been struggling in the World Tour this season.

There's a recap of the other races, including two events on the calendar in Copenhagen and Andorra, a brush with the UCI rules and analysis of Tadej Pogačar's foray into the world of children's books with his partner Urška Žigart.

Next up – our XL Tour de France Preview episode will be out in the middle of next week.

They may not have made it to their Swiss chalet, but spirits are still high on this month’s Cycling Podcast Féminin as the team tackle several weeks of lively racing. Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton set themselves the challenge of picking out some moments that made them say “Ooh!” from the Tour of Britain Women and the Tour de Suisse, which is no easy task after a number of memorable moments and breakthrough performances. Plus this month’s mini feature offers up a sneak preview of an upcoming Friends of the Podcast special. Four time British national champion Lisa Brambani sits down with The Cycling Podcast producer Tom Whalley to talk about the first ever women’s Giro in 1988. Brambani offers some rare detail as she battled convent dormitories and cold water showers as well as the race itself, all diligently recorded in her diary.

We also look ahead to this year’s Giro d’Italia and explore the punchy eight stage course which includes three summit finishes.

Also on the agenda, Denny’s imaginary Toblerone-inventing grandfather, Rebecca’s 90s hip hop karaoke and a thousand ways of saying “ooh!”.

With Eddy Merckx about to celebrate his 80th birthday, Tadej Pogačar equalled The GOAT's tally of Dauphiné victories (one) and reminded everyone, including Jonas Vingegaard, he remains the number one favourite for next month's Tour de France. But what else did we learn from the Dauphiné?

Brian Nygaard is on hand to remind us that although it wasn’t a winning week for Vingegaard, the Dane and his Visma-Lease A Bike team need not press the panic button just yet.

We ask Rod Ellingworth of Bahrain Victorious about Lenny Martinez’s stage victory on the final day, as the long wait for a French Tour champion approaches 40 years.

And we make a quick visit to Coorevits Corner to find out what Hugo made of Remco Evenepoel’s Dauphiné.

The Critérium du Dauphiné began in spectacular style with fireworks at the end of the opening stage on Sunday. The three riders who finished on the podium at last year’s Tour de France – Tadej Pogačar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel – lined up alongside each other for the first time since last July.

And they all came alive on the final climb of the race, breaking clear with Mathieu van der Poel and Santiago Buitrago, to hold off the sprinters in Montluçon.

It was a statement of intent from the three leading contenders for this summer’s Tour as they begin their final preparations for the grand départ.
