S12 Ep52: Better Late Than Never
24 mei 2024 · 1 uur
In the May episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton look back over the recent Spanish stage racing from the comfort of their own cabaña. Lees meer
Questions may have hung over Demi Vollering’s form after a consistent if lacklustre run in the Spring Classics, but the SD Worx rider answered in no uncertain manner with three dominant performances across the Vuelta Femenina, Itzulia Women and Vuelta a Burgos. Some unexpected rivals emerged though, most notably Evita Muzic who is priming herself to be France’s great hope at this year’s Tour de France Femmes. The team also discuss a huge comeback win for Lotta Henttala at the Vuelta a Burgos, her first victory in over five years after struggles with both her physical and mental health.
This month’s feature visits the topic of latecomers to the sport. These are riders who make the jump from regular jobs to elite racing careers in their late 20s and 30s. We hear from Jayco-Alula’s Mavi Garcia, Movistar’s Mareille Meijering and Coop-Repsol’s Monica Greenwood about their journeys into cycling and the peculiar life lessons they’ve learned along the way.

S12 Ep49: An interview with Lizzy Banks
22 mei 2024 · 1 uur 4 min
For the past 10 months, Lizzy Banks has been fighting to clear her name after an anti-doping test taken in May 2023 returned an adverse analytical finding for two substances. Lees meer
She was informed of the test result 79 days later. The two substances were formoterol, a medication she'd been using within the permitted level to treat asthma. The second, chlortalidone, was a diuretic she had never heard of. Unless she could prove contamination the twice Giro stage winner faced a two-year suspension.
Her investigation cost her career, her life savings and took a huge emotional toll on her and her family. When she could no longer afford full legal support, she investigated the case herself. Her medical training helped and the case she compiled led the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) to drop a scheduled tribunal and return a verdict of no fault, no negligence and no suspension.
Nevertheless, the rules state she has four anti-doping rule violations against her name, her career as a pro cyclist is over, and her reputation is harmed.
Lizzy has worked for The Cycling Podcast and so in the interests of transparency we asked Tom Cary, senior sports correspondent of The Telegraph, to conduct this independent interview. The episode is introduced by Rose Manley.
A warning, this podcast does contain references to suicide and suicidal thoughts.
A few abbreviations will come up, so just to give some clarity:
• WADA is the World Anti-Doping Agency
• UKAD is the UK Anti-Doping Agency, which is responsible for making sure that British athletes comply with the WADA code
• CAS is the Court of Arbitration for Sport, an independent institution involved in resolving legal disputes in the field of sport
• AAF is an Adverse Analytical Finding - commonly known as a positive doping test
• MRL stands for Minimum Reporting Limit. The concentration below which a substance will not trigger a positive test
• ADRV stands for Anti-Doping Rules Violation
Reference is also made to the cases of Shari…

6 mei 2024 · 40 min
We’re looking at the first ‘Grand Tour’ of the season in this Arrivée episode from The Cycling Podcast Féminin. Rose Manley and Denny Gray of The British Continental pick out the big stories from a week of varied and exhilarating racing. Lees meer
SD Worx came to the race looking for redemption after being narrowly denied the Vuelta title in last year’s controversial edition, but their leader Demi Vollering had a lot to prove after a disappointing Spring campaign. Her closest rivals - Kasia Niewiadoma and Elisa Longo Borghini - had both already taken landmark wins this year and were on confident form.
There’s also plenty to discuss away from the GC race, in a course that offered up high mountains, a team time trial, breakaway success and chaos causing crosswinds.

As per tradition, in association with our friends at Dvine Cellars in London, we’re presenting a selection of six wines showcasing the same terroir that the Giro d’Italia will visit in May. S12 Ep29: KM0 Special - The April Episodes
24 april 2024 · 44 min
In this special episode of The Cycling Podcast - before our Girovagando coverage cranks up next week - we both revisit and preview six new KM0 episodes either released earlier in April or still to come before the Grande Partenza in Turin on May 4. Lees meer
As ever, we’ll be serving up daily podcasts from on the ground in Italy, where the mood music in the run-up to the race has been dominated by Tadej Pogačar and his Giro-Tour bid. No surprise, then, that we’ll dedicate three KM0 episodes to ‘doubles’ of varying kinds - specifically, the last successful Giro-Tour slam by Marco Pantani, the football team that achieved Italy’s first Scudetto-Coppa Italia double and to whom the Grande Partenza is dedicated…and Pogačar’s own bid.
There are also extracts from our own ‘double-header’ - How to Become a Pro Cyclist and How to Become an Ex-Pro Cyclist featuring Jack Burke and Joe Dombrowski respectively. And, speaking of new roles, we also meet INEOS Grenadiers freshly appointed CEO, John Allert.

S12 Ep28: Arrivée | Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2024 | Women’s Race
21 april 2024 · 37 min
In this final Arrivée episode from the Ardennes Classics, Rose Manley and Rebecca Charlton take a close look at this year’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes which was full of twists and turns both literally and figuratively. Lees meer
The scene was set for something of a final grudge match between some of the biggest winners and unexpected losers of the Ardennes week. Team SD-Worx came in hoping to rebuild something of their ‘invincible’ status having not taken a win in the Ardennes. But with Elisa Longo-Borghini in flying form and Kasia Niewiadoma on a high after her Flèche Wallonne victory, last year’s triple crown winners could expect challenges from all sides. And after a week full of surprises, Liège-Bastogne-Liège promised more of the same.

With SD Worx still smarting from a mis-step from Lorena Wiebes at the Amstel Gold Race, the team was looking for revenge at the second Ardennes race of the week, particularly with defending champion Demi Vollering in their ranks. But they’ll face a huge challenge from Lidl-Trek, buoyed by Elisa Longo Borghini’s win at Brabantse Pijl. 2 april 2024 · 1 uur 15 min
In this week’s regular episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is again joined by journalist Richard Abraham and former Classics maestro Mitch Docker, as we revisit the men’s Tour of Flanders on Sunday and review some of the more salient and controversial talking points from ‘Vlaanderens Mooiste’. Mathieu van der Poel’s third Flanders victory was his most emphatic to date, but his triumphant solo move on the Koppenberg - while others floundered in his wake - also raised questions about whether that iconic climb should be removed from the Ronde course. We discuss this, Michael Matthews’ relegation in the sprint for the minor places, plus the accomplished performances of Movistar and runner-up Luca Mozzato.
In the last part of the episode, thoughts then turn to Paris-Roubaix next weekend and the Tour of the Basque Country - where the ‘home team’ is lining up with a surprising import.

26 maart 2024 · 1 uur 32 min
In this week’s episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by former Classics stalwart Mitch Docker and the journalist Richard Abraham, as we look back at last weekend’s pre-Ronde van Vlaanderen appetisers, the E3 Saxo Classic and Gent-Wevelgem. Lees meer
Friday saw the latest masterclass from Mathieu van der Poel in E3, which underlined his status as the outstanding favourite for De Ronde. Forty-eight hours later, though, Mads Pedersen’s victory over Van der Poel in Gent-Wevelgem led some to wonder whether Lidl-Trek had happened upon the perfect blueprint for defeating the Dutchman - not that the strategy will be easy to implement on Sunday.
In the final part of the podcast, we hear from a rider for whom just being on the startline on Sunday will represent a personal triumph - the Dane Michael Valgren, whose career was almost ended by a horror crash in the 2022 Route Occitanie.

S12 Ep15: Last Woman Back
22 maart 2024 · 1 uur 9 min
Our mini-feature this month focuses on the final riders to complete Paris-Roubaix. Riders who have had to overcome difficult circumstances to reach the end of one of the most formidable races in cycling, even when they finished way outside of the time limit. We speak to Ilaria Sanguineti, Eluned King and Senne Knaven about what motivated them to push past crashes, injuries and calamitous conditions to reach the famed velodrome and what it is like to ride the famous cobbles once the race is already long gone. Lees meer
We also have plenty of race analysis from the first few Classics of the season. Rose Manley is joined by Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton to pick apart what could be a changing of the guard at the top of the women’s peloton.
Elisa Balsamo outsprinted rider-of-the-moment Lotte Kopecky to take the spoils at Trofeo Binda after a huge effort from her team. With Lidl-Trek finally taking the top spot after improving results and rising confidence, we ask: what gave Lidl-Trek the winning edge and could it finally end SD Worx’s winning dominance?
We also discuss Ellen Van Dijk’s victorious return from maternity leave, pick out rising stars Mareille Meijering and Puck Pieterse, and make a rare detour on to the track to reflect on Laura Kenny’s golden career following her retirement.

S12 Ep14: The Pog & Phoneline
19 maart 2024 · 1 uur 20 min
This week’s episode of The Cycling Podcast comes from the latest stop on Daniel Friebe’s springtime Mediterranean tour, Mallorca, and precisely the home of Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch. That pair are joined by journalist Richard Abraham, as we revisit some of the most compelling storylines from Milan-Sanremo at the weekend. Lees meer
Jasper Philipsen’s victory on Via Roma meant heartache for Tadej Pogačar and his UAE Team Emirates team - and prompted questions about their strategy. Will Pog now have to rethink his not-yet-winning formula in La Classicissima, particularly in light of his newly declared ambition to become the greatest rider in history?
Speaking of history, in a special investigation, Daniel sets off in search of a piece of Sanremo’s. And, speaking of the future, Mathieu van der Poel has just committed the next decade to one company, as Rob reports.

S12 Ep12: American Flyers
13 maart 2024 · 1 uur 42 min
This week’s episode of The Cycling Podcast is a special dispatch from the Côte d’Azur, partly recorded at the home of our own Captain America - better known to us as Décathlton-AG2r La Mondiale’s ‘Motown Maestro’ Larry Warbasse - and featuring an exclusive interview with Visma-Lease a Bike’s newly crowned Paris-Nice champion, Matteo Jorgenson, on the morning after his triumph on the Promenade des Anglais. Lees meer
Larry and Daniel Friebe kick off with a recap of some of the week’s big stories, including Paris-Nice. Jorgenson’s victory was the most important in his flourishing career to date - and, over coffee in Nice’s Vieux Port, the Californian by birth, Idahoer by upbringing and Niçois by adoption tells Daniel how he overcame pre-race favourite Remco Evenepoel and childhood friend Brandon McNulty. After that, also in Nice, we hear journalist François Thomazeau’s reflections on what was due to be his final Race to the Sun.
In the last part, it’s back to Larry’s secluded hideaway in Èze to hear about his week in Italy at Tirreno-Adriatico. Larry will also be in action at Milano-Sanremo at the weekend - and he reveals some of the secrets of La Classicissima here, while also pondering what Tadej Pogačar has to do to win.

S12 Ep11: The Whole Pog
5 maart 2024 · 1 uur 21 min
In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe and journalist Richard Abraham are back in the bike race bubble at Paris-Nice, where two of the Big Four contenders for this year's Tour de France start to piece together their preparations for July. Lees meer
Remco Evenepoel comes fresh from victory at the Volta ao Algarve but is taking on a stage race on French soil for the first time in his career. Meanwhile Primož Roglič looks to open his account for his new team, BORA-hansgrohe, at a race he won in 2022. We discuss the expectations of both riders and hear from experienced Australian Jack Haig on what makes Paris-Nice a race of singular difficulty.
Of course we also tackle the weekend's big talking point, namely the exploits of another one of the Big Four, or should that be the Super Six: Tadej Pogačar at Strade Bianche. Daniel and Richard hear from Pog's former teammate Matteo Trentin and digest an 81km solo victory that will undoubtedly go down as one of one of his greatest hits.

S12 Ep10: Mum's the word
1 maart 2024 · 54 min
We’re looking at motherhood in our February episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin. With Ellen Van Dijk’s much-anticipated return from maternity leave on the horizon, we explore the growing trend of racers returning to the peloton post-baby. Lees meer
Rose Manley speaks to Lizzie Deignan, one of the first women to be supported by her team to a return to racing and her agent Emma Wade, as well as new mum and Uno-X rider Joss Lowden, former Trek-Segafredo rider Abi Van Twisk and former British champion Meg Backstedt (née Hughes).
Rose is also joined by Orla Chennaoui and Denny Gray to look at the recent racing, most notably a rare debut win for the GOAT Marianne Vos at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Discussion descends into bickering as the team try to decide how well Lidl-Trek played their tactics at the race after finishing third and fourth. We also ponder Lotte Kopecky’s recent transformation after showing off her climbing legs on the UAE Tour’s Jebel Hafeet and wonder how that might affect a seemingly tense relationship with teammate Demi Vollering.

S12 Ep9: Yellow Fever
27 februari 2024 · 1 uur 33 min
In this week’s episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by the veteran French journalist François Thomazeau and the Aussie former Classics maestro Mitch Docker to recap Opening Weekend - the Belgian double-header dominated, as per the predictions, by the Visma-Lease a Bike team. Lees meer
Wout Van Aert was the favourite for Saturday’s Omloop het Nieuwsblad and indeed looked to be zeroing in on victory until the peloton him down in the closing kilometres. It was left to Jan Tratnik to ‘save’ Visma-Lease a Bike and take the win…with Van Aert having to wait until the following day’s Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne to open his Classics account for 2024.
We discuss these and other notable performances from the two races, and also hear from Bahrain Victorious’s Fred Wright about what went…wrong for him at Omloop. Julian Alaphilippe, too, has had better weekends, and would have been hoping for a better response to his boss, Patrick Lefevere’s, recent criticism in the Belgian media. Nevertheless, we ask: what exactly was Lefevere playing at?

S12 Ep8: Weekend Warriors
20 februari 2024 · 1 uur 33 min
In this week’s episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by the journalist Richard Abraham & top commentator Rob Hatch, as we look forward to a very eagerly anticipated Opening Weekend in Belgium. Lees meer
Before thoughts turn to Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne,, we review some racing highlights from the last weekend, most notably from the Algarve in Portugal, where Remco Evenepoel passed the 50-victory mark in his still very young career. We then shift our attention to the Var in France, where our ‘own’ Larry Warbasse performed with some distinction on a fine weekend for his Décathlon-AG2r La Mondiale team..
In the final part of the episode, we focus on two upcoming races where Visma-Lease a Bike will be expected to pick up where they left off in 2023, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and O Gran Camiño in Galicia, Spain - start ramp for Jonas Vingegaard’s 2024 campaign. We hear from one rider who’ll be hoping to thwart the “killer bees” in Belgium, Fred Wright of Bahrain Victorious, before telling you why tall trees may fall hard in the not-too-distant future in Galicia - even if that doesn’t apply to Vingegaard this weekend.

S12 Ep7: Stars & Watercarriers
14 februari 2024 · 1 uur 34 min
In this week’s episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by the journalist Richard Abraham & Décathlon-AG2r La Mondiale stalwart Larry Warbasse - a still slightly soggy Larry Warbasse after his season’s début at a very wet Tour de la Provence. Lees meer
We discuss how Mads Pedersen whipped up a storm that blew the rest of the field away in the south of France - & ask whether the weather conditions themselves were even fit for racing. The Belgian whirlwind, Remco Evenepoel, also began his season at the weekend in Portugal, & did so with a trademark long range win. We hear from him, while turning our thoughts to the Tour de France; that race will also define everything Mark Cavendish does between now and July, and the Astana sprinter’s coach, Vasilis Anastopoulos, gives us a full debrief on a successful start to the year in Colombia.
Finally, we look ahead to one of the less ballyhooed races taking place in the coming days - The Tour of Rwanda - & hear from one rider for whom it will literally mean the end of the road.

It’s then time to focus on some of the big talking points and performances at the AlUla Tour, Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and Étoile de Bessèges - including an excellent week for Brian’s countryman, the Lidl-Trek star Mads Pedersen.
In the final part of the podcast, we discuss the upcoming 20th anniversary of Marco Pantani’s death and - with the help of a couple of Italian friends - arrive at the conclusion that ‘il Pirata’s’ life and legacy still deserve to be revisited.

S12 Ep5: Poel Position
31 januari 2024 · 1 uur 31 min
In this week’s regular episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by two of cycling’s most recognisable and beloved commentators - Renaat Schotte and Rob Hatch - to discuss to the start of the European road season and look ahead to the cyclocross Worlds in Tábor, Czechia. Lees meer
The reigning ‘cross world champions, Mathieu van der Poel and Fem Van Empel, are both favourites to retain their titles at the weekend. Renaat tells us why a Van der Poel victory, in particular, looks a safe bet…but possibly not a foregone conclusion.
In the last part of the podcast, we switch our attention to the tarmac and examine some of the themes of the road season so far. After last week’s laurels for the 20-year-old Mexican wunderkind Isaac Del Toro, we’re treated to an even closer look at his journey to the top by some of the men and women who first brought him to Europe with the A.R. Monex team.

26 januari 2024 · 54 min
We’re looking at life a little upside down in the first Cycling Podcast Feminin of the year. Special guest cycling journalist Rebecca Charlton joins Rose Manley and Denny Gray to look over the first Women’s World Tour race of the year – the Tour Down Under in Australia. Lees meer
We analyse the veracity of overall winner Sarah Gigante’s claims that she was “washed up” at the age of 23 and all get into a hotly-fought argument over Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig’s prospects for the year.
We’re also introducing the first in our year-long series of mini features. In this month’s episode we look into the current crop of talented New Zealand racers and ask what’s behind the sudden rise in Kiwi riders. Rose speaks to World Tour talents Niamh Fisher-Black and Mikayla Harvey plus former TIBCO rider Jo Kiesanowski and Patrick Harvey, manager of the development team Black Magic Women.
The team also round-up the latest news on the future of the Women’s Tour following the liquidation of organisers Sweetspot.
