We’re joined by Art Critic, Estelle Lovatt FRSA, discussing how Dogs have been captured in art through centuries: from the caves, medieval, renaissance, Victorian and modern day, highlighting some of the greats from Renoir, Hogarth, Landseer, Stubbs to Warhol, Picasso and Hockney. It's not about their own dogs, but the legacy that art though time has distinguished our relationship with dogs, how we've evolved together through time. The same message remains, dogs are symbolised through loyalty and being man’s best friend. Estelle also chats about her first life drawing class featuring a dog as the subject. Lees meer

We’re joined by Ry Webster, the founder of MorePaws, a clever app which helps dog owners connect with other local dog owners, businesses and services. It allows people to set up local dog walks, large or small or one to ones, encouraging a community spirit around their dogs. Whether it's setting up local walks, it's an App that helps bring the digital world into the park. Understanding that walking in Winter can affect dogs with their exercise routine reduced by 53% (according to Dogs Trust), MorePaws has launched a new National initiative called ' No Need To Walk Alone', a campaign to bring the benefits of the App into play by allowing dog owners to easily invite and set up walks together on dark Winter evenings. A worrying statistic is that 82% of women are afraid of walking alone in the dark - but with MorePaws , it’s easy to make sure that nobody walks their dog alone in the dark this Winter. Lees meer

  3. The PDSA PAW Report

    18 oktober 2026 · 34 min

    Afspelen
We’re joined by PDSA Vet, Anna Ewers-Clark, discussing this year’s annual animal well being PAW report where dogs are the focus. Revealing that one in five owners do no research before getting a pet, while just 16% investigate the costs, as PDSA highlights concerning gaps in animal care the proportion of owners doing no research before getting a pet has risen from 13% to 21% in just two years. Meanwhile, just 16% researched the cost of pet ownership, down from 24% in 2024, raising concerns about whether owners fully understand the lifelong commitment involved. PDSA warns that owners may unknowingly put their pets at risk of preventable health and behavioural problems because they do not fully understand their animals' needs. The report also highlights potential welfare concerns, with almost a third of dogs (32%) walked for no more than 30 minutes a day, while 32% of dog owners have used at least one adversive training method and 12% have not trained their dog at all. Meanwhile, 43% of rabbits are reported to live alone despite being highly social animals, and 43% of rabbit owners say their pet spends between 11 and 23 hours a day confined to a hutch. More than three-fifths (61%) of pet owners found their pet online, including through advertising sites and social media, where PDSA warns irresponsible breeding and re-homing practices can be difficult to identify. 8. The Wonders of Hyaluronic Acid with Vet Humphrey Grimmett

    13 september 2026 · 49 min

    Afspelen
We’re joined by Vet, Dr Humphrey Grimmett, discussing why adding long chain oral Hyaluronic Acid (HA) can help balance the body’s HA resources as it naturally depletes with age. Lees meer

Playing a key role as nature’s ‘sponge’ or shock absorber, HA is a compound dogs produce naturally, but its production slows down with age or after injury.

This can impact on mobility as one of the main purposes of HA is to cushion the moveable joints, the knees, hips, and shoulders enabling them to move smoothly, rather than becoming stiff and potentially causing pain.

We chat about other factors that HA contributes to in human’s as well as dogs and of course cats too! This includes eye health and skin health. But Humphrey points out that the HA found in face creams is a short chain form, whereas taken orally the long chain has been scientifically proven to be absorbed more efficiently.

We’re talking about the resurgence of the High Street, as promoting independent shops that play a role in community, not least your local ’pet shop’ where dogs, as part of the family, play a major role in community spirit! We discuss why customers often prefer to choose carefully selected brands and spend time in store, feeling connected to the products they’re buying. We’re joined by Author and Photographer, Paul Koudounaris, who has previously been on the show talking about Pet Cemeteries in his book Faithful unto Death. Today we’re chatting about railroad dogs and his latest book called Go West Young Dog. As a really fascinating read, the book uncovers a somewhat hidden pocket of canine history about some brave, vagabond dogs that became famous by traveling - alone- on the world's first rail networks. Paul concentrates on the American dogs, not that there weren’t ‘railroad’ dogs in other continents. Many of these dogs gained ‘celebrity’ status - their stories are funny, heartwarming, triumphant, and tragic, or all at the same time. As Paul says: 'I believe that within those stories, these dogs have some lessons to teach us.' Lees meer

With Crufts just three days away, we’re so excited to be chatting to Naturaw’s Founder, Jess Warneken, on the company’s sponsorship of the Flyball team, Junkyard Dogs. Lees meer

Competing at this year’s most prestigious global canine event, we’re also joined by the team captain, Cheryl Quinn, who discusses why the pressure is on!

She explains the training involved - and that’s not just for the dogs - and why it’s such a community driven sport and highly competitive.

Teaching the dogs to remain focused, takes time and commitment with weekly training sessions. Cheryl believes any dog can enjoy Flyball, but at a high competition level, the dogs are chosen for their commitment to their team spirit, and for their individual skills. Some have more speed to gain time, whilst others have others combine speed with accuracy that’s needed to prevent any faults.

Every Flyball team must incorporate at least one pure bred dog , which in Junkyard’s case is a Border Collie, others can be any cross breed, with Lurchers being firm favourites.

Naturaw is thrilled to support Junkyard Dogs! As the sport requires dogs to be in peak condition to win with speed and precision, the team is fed Naturaw for this reason. Helping to fuel them for optimum health from the inside out.

No matter what, it’s about having fun, the dogs have been acclimatised to the atmosphere , the roar of the crowds and the many distractions - sights , sounds and smells that can overwhelm many dogs.

As always everyone at Crufts no mater what takes their best dog home!

Prof Greger discusses how his work helps map our relationships with both cats and dogs in line with our own human evolution.

Explaining that although cats were thought to have been domesticated around 10,000 years ago , in fact the latest science suggests that cats began their close relationship with humans relatively recently especially when compared to dogs.

He explains the cats’ evolution and why the ancient Egyptians thought of them as deities, and why their recent domestication means they are literally more wild than dogs.

Cats were happy to stay at a comfortable distance from humans for thousands of years.

Unlike dogs, we chat briefly on a very new discovery that potentially is the oldest known dog to ever!

Some argue it’s a vital missing link, but will this change our knowledge of dogs per se?

The research, studying over 70 breeds, hundreds of litters, suggests in line with ground breaking studies in Sweden, the evidence reveals that there is no genetic influence on dysplasia in dogs. Interestingly this has already been confirmed in people!

Plus we chat about ‘flat faced’ breeds and their breathing issues, which Gordon discusses is arguably not a result of a short muzzle, but rather more related to the width of nostrils and the efficacy of airway passages. Also being related to whether the dogs are porky or slim, with obesity having a huge body burden affect on many health issues, not least respiration.

This week we're joined by Bio-Archeologist, Dr Carly Ameen, who has been part of a team studying the emergence and diversification of dog morphology. Looking at the remarkable difference in over 600 dog’s skulls from as far back as 11,000 years ago, the team discovered a huge variety of skull shapes and sizes. This proves that dogs were very different from wolves at this point in time. But the missing link as to when wolves became dogs is still unclear. But this research confirms it was more than 11,000 years ago! The variety of skull shapes in what is generically termed a 'canid’ also dispels the myth that the Victorians created the range of dog breeds we see today. The extreme modern exaggeration of features was not apparent in the skulls analysed, but they do prove that dogs had been shaped, being created for the different purposes whether guarding, hunting, or simply being ‘lap dogs’. We chat about the Romans and how there are graves dedicated to dogs in the UK dating back to the Roman empire, again proving the huge impact dogs have had on our lives for centuries. The question of when wolves became dogs may never be answered as for many years the wolves - a strain of Grey Wolf, long extinct, would have remained as wolves for likely hundreds of years. before they changed shape. What we do know is that these early dogs saw something in us early humans that inspired them to become man’s best friend. Lees meer
