Tis the Season to be Dog Friendly: Cinema
31 december 2023 · 44 min
In the second part of our festive Dog Friendly episodes, Anna and the gang go to the dog friendly screenings at the Picture House Cinema originally aired in July 2023. Lees meer
Anna is joined by Amber Pegden, Marketing Manager at The Picture House Central. Based in Piccadilly in the heart of London’s Theatreland and Soho, it's also home to very special dog friendly screenings. Amber has been instrumental in creating this extremely popular dog-centric cinematic experience. She chats about why as a dog owner herself she understands why fellow dog owners would prefer to go and see films with their dogs. Interestingly it's not to see Lassie or 101 Dalmatians, its the latest ‘blockbuster’ movies. We talk about how Anna’s own Mr Binks is a seasoned cinema goer, and how Prudence, Anna’s Bull terrier, went to see the multi-award winning Isle of Dogs, created in Hackney in London. Amber highlights the thought behind her project which includes a seat for your dog that’s included in the price for a single human seat. On entering the Auditorium dogs are offered their own blanket to keep their seat dog hair free, with fresh bowls of water dotted around for the dogs. There’s dog-friendly ice cream on offer, and of course dog-friendly popcorn too. We chat about the joyous spirit of these screening where like minded folk get together and celebrate their dogs. Its a chance to sharpen their training, as well as meet and greets. As Anna’s personally most favourite thing to do as an inspired concept taking dog friendly to new limit. What’s extraordinary is that the dogs really enjoy it and settle. In over six years there’s never been a complaint about dog hair or any allergic reactions! It has to be experienced to be believed! Later, Anna joins her friends Jo Good, Henry Brandman, and Caroline Brill, all with their dogs to see the Barbie Movie.

Tis the Season to be Dog Friendly: Restaurants
24 december 2023 · 25 min
In the first of our festive dog-friendly venue episodes we visit M Restaurant in Victoria, London to see how they cater to patrons with pets, originally aired July 6 2022. Lees meer
Anna is joined by Martin Williams, the founder of London’s premier steak houses, M Restaurant and Gaucho. He chats about why he wanted to open his restaurant’s doors to dogs at a time when the concept of ‘Dog Friendly’ hadn’t reached the mainstream. Proud of his decision to incorporate special ‘six-leg’ menus and events for dogs and their people to enjoy, the space at the Victoria flagship restaurant lends itself perfectly being so spacious, it can easily accommodate a Christmas party of rover 80 Guide Dogs - just one of many events he’s hosted in aid of charity, and offering great fun for all alike.
He explains why it is not ‘illegal’ to invite dogs into a restaurant, so long as common sense prevails and there’s space to offer those not dog friendly to also feel relaxed. He also chats about his Labradoodle, Hudson, who left his legacy on the restaurant, always remembered through some artworks, and branding as being Martin’s inspiration to be so #DogFriendly. His young Labradoodle, named Wilbur and Mr Binks enjoyed meeting and recording in person too!

Yap Yap with Keef Yap
3 december 2023 · 32 min
This week we’re joined by Keef Yap whose initiative YapYap.dog is taking meet up groups to new levels in London. Inspired by her own MaltiPoo called Buttons, Keef wanted to reach out to fellow dog moms after the pandemic to get together in real life. Her idea to set up meet up groups, and build a dedicated community of like minded dog moms. Teaming up with Yumove - the joint care supplements brand - to offer support from a health perspective, the puppy parties also focus on training and proactive engagement with your dog. Initially launched for Maltipoos, Cavapoos and Cockapoos, Keef is looking to expand her breeds groups in 2024 and introduce group meet ups for all rescue dogs to join in and take centre stage. We talk about how important it is to socialise and get out and about with your dog, to help train a pup that’s happy and confident to enjoy metropolitan life. We also talk about the Big Woof which Keef organised in the summer at the new impressive Kings Cross area - known as Coal Drops Yard where hundreds of dogs and their owners benefited from dog friendly shopping opportunities all thanks to YapYap.dog. We’re very excited to announce the next big dogcentric party which is at St John’s Church near Hyde Park on December 16th which is set to a dogtastic winter wonderland for dogs with Secret Santa, a grotto, competitions and lots of prizes to be won! Caroline Alupo Returns
19 november 2023 · 49 min
This week Ethologist and Behaviour expert Caroline Alupo is back to discuss why she co-founded the training app called Petli (Petli.App). We chat about the reasons pet parents might feel intimidated to go to dog training classes. Or maybe they simply do not have the time, or could they have underestimated the commitment and time dogs need everyday!? The Petli app is such a good idea!! It makes training indoors / in the park / in the garden really accessible in bit sized sessions lasting only a few minutes. There are classes and programs for everyone from puppies to seniors. There are simple tests and challenges to work through and there are experts like Caroline on hand to contact for additional advice. As Caroline explains it's way more than just training, which some people assume will be strict and boring, but you’ll discover it's fun, and so will your dog. Caroline explains that the company’s tag line: Your Dog’s Best Friend is a reminder why owners should take the time to expand their dogs skills sets, as positively trained dogs are happy dogs. And make for happier more confident owners. We chat about the extras in Petli that allow you to delve into articles written by experts that can also de-mystify your dog’s behaviour, giving you a deeper understanding of what makes your dog tick. Bonus: Paleo Ridge at the London Vet Show
17 november 2023 · 24 min
In this special bonus episode Anna catches up Paleo Ridge at the London Vet Show, talking about why the company is supporting the Raw Feeding Vet Society RFVS at the event. Lees meer
In response to the demand from customers to learn more about feeding a whole food species appropriate diet, the RFVS were inundated with interest fromVets at the show. Grabbing a few minutes with Paleo Ridge’s Will Green and Esther Logue, we chatted about a shift in perceptions. As dog owners opt for healthier eating themselves, it's inevitable that pet parents are transferring their learning to their pets.
Understanding the impact diet: ingredients that support and fuel at a cellular level, feeding a raw balanced complete diet to your dog is beneficial to their health. Over the years Anna has received a lot of antagonism from Vets on feeding an unprocessed, natural whole food diet, which she found very disappointing. As a canine nutritionist, Anna agrees with Paleo Ridge’s philosophy that by pre-empting health issues, is a way to keep dogs and their owners happy. Feeding ingredients that are bioavailable and nutrient dense - ‘Letting food be thy medicine (as Hippocrates said in 600BC), can transform health. Offering an exclusive Vet Club for practices, Paleo Ridge aims to educate!! Offering free advice, special packages and in-practice freezer options for vet practices.
We touch on the myths around Raw Food Feeding, and why the RFVS want to help de-mystify such preconceptions and help Vets fulfill the demand from their customers. Being open to change and learning about nutrition is the key not just for dogs, but for humans too.

Nikki Tibbles and Sam Toft
12 november 2023 · 38 min
We’re joined by Nikki Tibbles, CEO of Wild at Heart Foundation (WAH) and the Artist, Sam Toft at the Panter & Hall Gallery on Pall Mall. Lees meer
We chat to Nikki about the truly amazing welfare projects helping dogs in need around the globe. Talking about their work, Nikki explains that 75% of the world’s dog population are strays.
Over the years WAH has raised funds to set up vet services in regions like India where the stray dog population must be reduced for the welfare of dogs. With thousands of sterilisations, sending 5.5 tons of dog food, working with charities helping Ukrainian canine refugees. Helping with rabies vaccines, and parasite control, Nikki explains why WAH works collaboratively, and sustainably setting up practice clinics.
Most recently WAH is partnering with food banks to help dog owners struggling to feed their dogs in the cost of living crisis. Nikki’s passion is to stop puppy farms, stop online sales, and promote adoption here in the UK with rescues brimful post pandemic.
Sam concurs with rescuing, and her own rescue a German Shepherd called Betty is a police dog, trained, but rejected in Romania. Having spent so much work on Betty explains why rescuing and rehabilitating dogs is just so rewarding. Fulfilling a talent and true love of dogs, Sam once wanted to become a dog trainer. In her Art, Sam illustrates her ‘imaginary’ family and friends, and bring dogs into her art as characters that resonate. The wonderful naivety of Sam’s work is accessible capturing moments of joy, reflection, sadness and fun.
Offering a range of art works and ceramics for auction, Sam also sketched the many dogs attending through the evening- including Mr Binks!

Bonus: Help the XL Bullies
8 november 2023 · 35 min
As an important midweek announcement, tune into our mid-week bulletin Lees meer
We’re joined by Amber Ellis @theofficialbullycoalition and Felix Robinson @PetTrustUk talking about the urgent fundraising appeal initiated by Sophie Coulthard @dontbanmelicenseme
The funds raised so far have allowed for Barrister John Cooper to be appointed and serve Thérèse Coffey, EFRA and DEFRA, with a Pre Action Protocol Letter in Judicial Review. The capital is to fund the Judicial Review on the XL Bully ban as the case proceeds. With a tight deadline, groups are campaigning to raise the remaining funds to ensure the suit goes forward. As part of the banning so many owners face the fact that the ban is based on measurements. Or as it stands there is only one measurement which is 19 inches or more in height. A chunky build, some wrinkles, and muscular shoulder blade are the definitions.
Felix explains why she on realising this, and that her Boxer, Sammy, fits this ‘type’ measurement (as do millions of other breeds and mixes). Understanding the fear of going out with your dog Pet Trust UK has created a digital dog tag containing proof of insurance, exemption, vets, and a raft of other valuable information be in one place - making supplying proof of paperwork is simple in the event its needed.
As a landmark situation years after the Dangerous Dogs Act has clearly not worked, the Judicial review will challenge its restrictions as breaking the Animal Welfare Act, and the Five Freedoms. It will also present the science behind why banning a breed is NOT the way forward, rather licensing, education, support at all levels in line with a nation of animal lovers.

It’s a journey through dogdom, highlighting therapy dogs, rare breeds, the history of dogs to all the great jobs dogs do with their supersonic sense of smell. And a section on the most popular designer cross breeds. There’s a fun central pullout where breeds are located highlighting why they’re originate from. Plus the book brings to life why dogs are our best friends from sensing our emotions, to knowing when we’re on our way home, to even sniffing out the elusive truffle. Caroline Alupo
29 oktober 2023 · 42 min
We’re joined by Caroline Alupo, a canine behavioural consultant with 18 years experience and a master's degree in Ethology. Lees meer
Specialising in PTSD in dogs, Caroline and I discuss how trauma affects dogs just as it does people. How dogs communicate their stress in different contexts and how to help overcome their fears. We chat about how science concurs children are deeply affected in some cases losing their imagination.
We talk about diagnostic tools, prognosis and how tore-balance your dog. In the process we discuss how the bond between you and your dog gets stronger through building communication, focus, and trust.
Discussing how emotional intelligence is now recognised in dogs, Caroline’s study underlines the importance of compassion and understanding that every dog is an individual. We chat about episodic memory and why contexts (similar to in people) can trigger reactions in dogs.
Caroline is also the co-founder of the dog app called Petli. As a new and really useful App, I’m very excited to shout about it, and recommend that everyone takes a look.
I know how many of us are intimidated by dog training classes, worry we might be the worst in the room, anticipate reactions from your dog and more.
That’s part of the reason why Petli is so good - it offers pet parents the chance to train their dogs in their own time, either to practice in-between training classes, or to top up your training in an older dog. The App is skilfully designed to put the fun back into dog training. It takes steps very slowly in precise increments, so your dog learns the cues and you learn to become adept at understanding your own individual dogs limits of concentration, and of course what works best as the reward.

Ira Moss Returns
22 oktober 2023 · 48 min
This week we’re joined by Ira Moss, CEO of All Dogs Matter, London’s independent re-homing charity. Lees meer
We discuss the situation in rescue with XL Bully types, being abandoned since the news of the XL Bully imminent ban. Ira explains that when the breed is banned it will be illegal for rescues to re-home these dogs and they will face euthanasia.
One of Ira’s bugbears is buying dogs online, as a recently new phenomenon which are a shop window for puppy farmers and make it far too easy for anyone to buy a dog. And sell them when the dog is wanted.
We talk about French Bulldogs and why ADM is overloaded with ex breeding bitch Frenchies, and others that have behavioural issues making them undesirable and abandoned. We agree that so much needs to be changed in the world of dogs, where pooches have become commodities and the ‘must-have' accessory.
We also chat about cats and how they’re being abandoned with cat rescues also full to the brim!

The Terrier Tax
8 oktober 2023 · 31 min
We’re joined by Vet and Environmentalist, Andrew Prentis, who joins us the day after 2023 was declared the hottest day on record. We discuss why pet ownership should become more sustainable. Referencing that a Labrador emits more C02 in its lifetime than an average 4 x 4, and the fact that dogs and cats consume 20% of the world’s meat supply. Highlighting that pets help with companionship, physical exercise, mindfulness, and so much more, that surely the carbon paw-print is sustainable from a societal perspective compared to air travel, buildings’ emissions, and industry. Andrew postulates that dogs and cats could become Vegan, and that its time to choose smaller dog breeds. We also discuss the ’Terrier Tax’ where treats, chews and accessories for small dogs are often priced the same as for bigger dog versions - a smart move by food firms? Do we need all these accessories for dogs? Is capitalism getting in the way of pets’ welfare and the need to shift to more sustainable options? Lees meer

Turtle and the Hip Hop Hare and RAPunzel, all illustrated by Betsy Lewin. Banning the American XL Bully
24 september 2023 · 30 min
This week we’re joined by Animal Psychologist, Dr Roger Mugford, discussing the recent ban of the American XL Bully. We chat about Dr Roger’s experience in 1991 when the knee jerk Dangerous Dogs Act legislation was introduced. Designed to keep the public safe from dog bites and incidents, evidence is clear that the law has simply not worked. Dog bites increase to rise, at a record high earlier this year, up 34% since 2019, and with 18 deaths caused by dogs in the past 18 months. The XL Bully being accountable for eight of these tragic mortalities. Government's decision to ban the the XL Bully type is a massive concern as Dr Roger explains, the XL Bully is a ’designer crossbreed’, a mix of four or five different breeds. Therefore they vary in size, head shape, ear carriage and a mix of a boxer crossed Labrador could be mistaken for one of this ‘type’. Hundreds of innocent dogs could be ‘seized’ and separated from their owners until proved by DNA either not guilty or euthanised. Also these ‘types’ are now being abandoned to rescues that imminently are not able to re-home dogs as defined by the DDA, meaning these dogs will be put to sleep. As Dr Roger reiterates having been an Expert Witness for hundreds of dogs in court, banning a breed is not the solution, the only way forward is better accountability for dogs through education and regulating ownership. Dogs are man’s best friend and should not be discriminated against by how the look, or pay the price for inexperienced owners or those exploiting a dogs’ strength for illegal dog fighting and intimidation. Lucy's own ground breaking podcast - Spinsterhood Reimagined - dares to investigate the elusive yet secretly celebrated world of Spinsterhood. What it means and its growth as arguably a very cool demographic. More importantly why Spinsterhood is growing and how Lucy helps empower women in a world where conventional ‘almost Victorian’ values are increasingly misplaced.
We discuss all the animals who have impacted on Lucy since childhood, and why her cat, Johnny, fulfills some inner nurturing instinct. We also discuss why Spinsterhood could be enviable for some, and chat about the episode Anna recorded with Lucy revealing her meeting with Johnny Depp one evening in Soho.

Robert Clarke
20 augustus 2023 · 26 min
This week we’re joined by artist, Robert Clarke, known for his stunning portraits of dogs. Talking to us from NYC where he moved from London, we chat about the differences in dogs and their people across the pond, but why commissioning a unique piece of art is still considered a ’must have’ for dog owners. As one of the first artists to focus on dogs back in 2010, Robert’s first A-Z of dog breeds was exhibited in the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in 2012. We chat about one of Anna’s most coveted possessions, a portrait by Robert of Molly her first Miniature Bull Terrier painted in 2011. It’s Robert’s style that brings every dog to life using a canvas and the structure of paint and colour to capture a dog’s unique personality. Having studied at St Martins, Robert is no stranger to a range of subjects and projects not least his latest A-Z project looking at Montauk in New York state, south of Long Island. We chat about his up-coming new A-Z of dogs, which will be created and available to buy in time for Christmas. As an update to his original A-Z of dogs circa 2012, this will highlight the shift in breed popularity to include more doodles. We calling out to A DOG’S LIFE listeners to contact Robert with your ideas for the new A-Z (watch this space on Instagram). And of course to get your order in time for Christmas! Lees meer

Flop Not Crop!
13 augustus 2023 · 36 min
This week we’re joined by Jordan Shelley, Behaviour & Training animal welfare expert. We chat about his campaign Flop Not Crop and how he has raised awareness about the cruelty of cropping dogs' ears, which is illegal in the UK. Stopping nasty ear cropping kits (legal in the USA), from entering the UK by banning their sales online to the UK, and helping to curb this barbaric ‘fashion’ trend in certain breeds. We talk about re-introducing the dog licence and Jordan discusses his role at Animal Licensing Wales. We also discussed banning sales of dogs and live animals on the internet and the huge disappointment in the shelving of the Animal welfare (Kept Bill), and the impact of this in terms of dog welfare in the UK. We chat about the XL Bully and why adding this ‘breed’ onto the Dangerous Dogs list won’t really make any difference to reducing dog bite incidents, rather it lies in more education and a centralised approach. Trained Puppies Don't Bite Children
6 augustus 2023 · 46 min
This week we're joined by Trainer & Behaviour expert, and Groomer, Deidre Ryan, whose book Trained Puppies Don’t Bite Children has to be the best dog training book Anna's read for years! Simply laid out in 100 short chapters with perfect illustrations, the book is based on the principles of the Sunday Times bestselling book “French children don’t throw food” by Pamela Druckerman. Deidre explains why she noticed she was raising her children in a similar way to how Deidre had raised her own five dogs. She realised that there were many parallels when it came to raising puppies and decided to write a no-nonsense approach for pet parents. We discuss the term pet parents and concur we are dog owners. Nevertheless in her book Deidre explains: "in the parenting book there is a ‘cadre’- a framework for how children are expected to behave. It combines “a little bit of strictness, with a lot of freedom”. My dogs are allowed lots of off leash freedom on walks, but I insist on a strong un-negotiable recall. We also talk about the animal welfare crisis in Ireland and how Deidre is supporting Dog Advocacy Ireland. Lees meer

Dog Friendly Cinema
30 juli 2023 · 42 min
This week we’re joined by Amber Pegden, Marketing Manager at The Picture House Central. Lees meer

Dr Dan Allen
23 juli 2023 · 44 min
This week we’re joined by Dr Daniel Allen, Animal Geographer at Keele University, and champion of Pet Theft Reform. In the wake of Government shelving what was called the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill, Dr Dan, along with pet theft campaigners including SAMPA (the Stolen & Missing Pets Alliance) and Vets Get Scanning, to lobby Government hard again to bring in a separate law with appropriate penalties for stealing all pets, but mainly dogs who have been victims of organised crime for decades. Brought to a head in the pandemic when the demand for puppies outstretched supply, along with prices for puppies soaring to ridiculous levels, canny criminal activity reached preposterous levels with scamming, stealing dog in daylight, breaking into private gardens and more. As a crime with little consequence under the antiquated Theft Act 1968, dogs are classed in law as chattel. This means that stealing dogs is a low-risk, high-gain business for criminals. The penalty is the same for stealing a laptop, a phone or a car. During the pandemic there was much talk of creating a specific law that factored in the enormous emotional attachment between dogs and their owners and the trauma to individuals suffering from this ‘abduction'. We discuss this at length not least that science now concurs that dogs have emotional intelligence -they are not chattel. So Dr Dan has launched a new petition to re-galvanise Government to take action - please sign the petition!!!! Lees meer

The Dangers of Neuturing with Dr Lise Hansen
16 juli 2023 · 46 min
This week we’re joined by Dr Lise Hansen who returns to talk about the latest science behind neutering and spaying. We last recorded an episode about this same subject three years ago, it seems that the messages from a raft of science on the side effects of neutering is yet to filter down into routine Vet practice. Dr Lise explains that the issue surrounds the reproductive LH Hormone, which continues to be produced by the brain even when the sex organs are removed. This hormone accumulates in the body and becomes out of balance, creating health issues from osteoarthritis, cancers, to hypothyroidism. The science is only 10 years old, and change can be slow to take effect. But according to Dr Lise this is the biggest news in the Veterinary world, which she predicts that in 10 years time, neutering will be considered not only an unnecessary, but unethical procedure. Dr Lise points out that in Norway it is already illegal to neuter unless for extreme health reasons, and in Scandinavia generally it’s frowned upon as a practice compared to the complete opposite in the USA where Dr Lise thinks that a possible alternative like vastectomies for dogs and ovary sparing spays for bitches will become the norm, in the USA, but for now Dr Lise encourages you to read the science much of which is included in her book : The Complete Book of Cat and Dog Health. Lees meer
The Complete Book of Cat and Dog Health is published by Hubble&Hattie and is available everywhere you buy books including Amazon. It contains a full chapter (16 pages) covering the topic of neutering including alternative surgeries and the implications of living with an entire dog. It also lists scientific references.

Doga
9 juli 2023 · 43 min
This week we’re joined by Mahny Djahanguiri (DogaMahny). Mahny is the UK and Europe's leading founder and author of DOGA -Yoga for you and your Dog. She is also a Ashtanga yoga teacher with whom Anna has practiced both Yoga and Doga. Lees meer
Seven years ago Mahny learnt of Puppy Yoga and began delving deeper into these classes, which were benefiting from the success and growing recognition of Doga. Thanks to her determination she was thrilled that she helped an ITV investigation of this new trend and its exposé recently aired on mainstream national UK news.
Mahny is passionate about Doga as offering a therapy for you and your own dog. It is not related to this new trend in any way. Doga practices the principles of Yoga: positive energy, mindfulness: kindness and altruism as part of Ayurvedic culture.
The ITV News investigation by Sam Leader, Daniel Hewit, and Imogen Barrer uncovers the dark side of a growing wellness trend, Puppy Yoga.
In a world where influencers are continually looking for the latest social media trend to jump on it seemed that puppy yoga, the practice where young dogs roam around your yoga class, was a perfect fit. On the face of it, the events provide an enticing mix of cute animals in a relaxing environment, creating images that are perfect for sharing on social media. But the ITV News investigation offers a glimpse into a differing reality than those filtered Instagram videos might lead you to believe.

Save the Beagles!
25 juni 2023 · 49 min
This week we’re joined by Phil Green, animal advocate, dog lover and proud pet parent to Scarlett the Beagle. Rescued by The Beagle Freedom Project in 2016 from a toxicology laboratory in Hungary, she had been bred by Marshall Bio Resources at the huge HQ in New York for the purpose of vivisection. Scarlett is one of the very few lucky ones enabled freedom, aged only two years. Both Phil and Janie Green had their names down for a rescued Beagle, understanding the long socialisation journey ahead. Scarlett adapted very well to her rural life in Essex, and enjoys the sights, sounds and smells of woodlands, and outdoors that she was deprived of. Scarlett has helped raise awareness of the atrocities that these Beagles endure in their very short terribly sad lives. In the hands of ‘white coats’ that justify their salaries from private ‘Big Pharma’ firms making everything from cleaning products to headache pills. The practice of vivisection is morally and financially bankrupt in an age when we have advanced technology that can do testing more economically, accurately, and without causing huge suffering to animals - in this Beagle. Scarlett has become the face of many campaigns , not least The Camp Beagle, to raise awareness and urge the public to support her in getting vivisection - the dark secret - raised in Parliament, get legislation amended in line with the Animal Welfare Act. This week in loving memory of Gremlin, tune into my chat with Dr Zazie Todd - CompanionAnimal Psychology - talking about her book Purr. In our conversation on cats , the lack of science on their behaviour (compared to dogs), I recount several hilarious anecdotes on Gremlin, which will make you realise why I named him Gremlin, the lengths he went for to help Molly when she was poorly, and why Gremlin was quite a cat for someone’s first feline! Le Pet Express
11 juni 2023 · 46 min
This week Brenda Stowers joins us to chat about Le Pet Express. Her passion to offer straight forward service to travel in and out of the UK began with her own experience when relocating from California into the UK. She flew into France because dogs and cats can travel in the cabin as long as they fit in front of your airline seat. From Paris they entered the UK on a ferry in a rented car service. Coordination took months of planning and a lot effort to find a trusted provider to cross the Channel. The only other option was to put her cats in cargo and fly direct into Heathrow. The issue with traveling in the hold as cargo means you lose control, and it can be super stressful for your pet. Le Pet Express lessens this anxiety, whether you’re relocating, or popping over to Paris for a long weekend, or driving traveling onward into Europe. Le Pet Express offers help with all the newly complicated paperwork, and Brenda handles bookings and holds customer’s hands through checking the minute details of the Animal Health Certificate needed for British pets to enter France. Having designed the minibus especially to accommodate five pets and their people in line with DEFRA’s regulations, Brenda has traveled with Great Danes to Chihuahuas, Ferrets and of course cats. Le Pet Express is an ideal option for larger dogs that cannot travel in cabin due to their size, which puts owners off taking them abroad. Lees meer

Red Light Therapy
4 juni 2023 · 49 min
This week we’re down at the Mind, Body and Spirit show where we caught up with Ruth Milner talking about ‘Red Light Therapy’. As a member of the International Light Association, Ruth is an expert authority on the power of light as a healing modality. We discuss the sudden boom in LED sourced Red and Near Infrared devices, which have flooded the beauty market recently. We chat why not all ’devices’ are the same in their evidence based doses. We discuss the how light interacts with our cells at a biological level to provide vital energy and power ATP. We discuss the latest volume of The Power of Light, Colour and Sound for Health and Wellness from the International Light Association, in which Ruth’s chapter of using a device called Photizo has helped all creatures great and small: from tigers, elephants, horses, dogs and even hedgehogs. And we discuss why the Photizo range gained its Medical CE status -with so many applications to help on a human level too - we chat notably about evidence on Red Light and Parkinson's disease. But we also discuss why ‘Red Light Therapy’ uses a modality termed by MeSH in 2015 - its called Photobiomodulation. Lees meer

28 mei 2023 · 43 min
This week Kennel Club spokesperson, Bill Lambert, joins us to chat about how during this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, they explored the theme of anxiety. One of the most common mental health problems today, affecting people of all ages, and this new research also highlights the different ways in which owners, from all walks of life, believe their dogs help with their mental health. Nearly half (48 per cent) of owners aged over 55 agree that their dog makes them less stressed, while more than a third (37 per cent) of owners aged between 16-24 admit that their dog makes them feel less anxious. Regular exercise is also beneficial for mental well-being, and more than two in five (45 per cent) of owners believe that walking their dog improves their mood, while 63 per cent claim their dog has helped them to become fitter and healthier.

This week we’re joined by Pet Bereavement Councillor, Dawn Murray. She has over 20 years experience working in the heart of the pet bereavement world, not only offering pet bereavement support but also as a pet undertaker. She has won numerous awards in relation to her work including a Points of Light award. She lives near Edinburgh with her husband and two whippets. For many years she has had a passion for retired racing Greyhounds and has loved and lost over 25 of her own pets. In her book 'An Introduction to Pet Bereavement Counselling’ she highlights the psychology behind grief. We talk about the different types of grief that different people can experience. Why many pet parents suffer greatly despite us all knowing that our pets simply don’t live long enough. The book is relevant for everyone to read as it highlights many cases, proving we’re not alone. Dog Advocacy Ireland
14 mei 2023 · 33 min
This week we’re joined by animal lover and animal advocate, John O’Callaghan, who has launched Dog Advocacy Ireland, a not for profit organisation aiming to make change! Known as the puppy farm capital of Europe, hundreds of puppy farms are permitted to operate without fear of detection or prosecution, to ‘breed for greed’ in an illegal industry which yields at least €200 million annually. He discusses why change is needed where a Government misappropriates tax-payers money in funding hare coursing and Greyhound Racing, despite public opposition, and must be held accountable for condoning dog/animal mistreatment. John explains why Ireland has a poor reputation when it comes to animal welfare despite legislation including The Animal Welfare Act and the Control of Dogs Act, Parliament is divided. "Dog Advocacy Ireland is openly inviting ALL right-minded dog/animal lovers to join our non-profit organisation in forging meaningful change of mindset and policy on dog/animal welfare protection in our country. We want Government to uphold current legislation, under the Animal welfare Act 2013 which includes the duty of care under the Five Freedoms. Similarly, Dog Advocacy Ireland wants to ensure that local authorities work proactively in line with the ‘Control of Dogs Act’ to encourage and support responsible dog ownership. Bringing dog welfare centre stage in public consciousness, together with cooperative engagement with the political system, is paramount in effecting meaningful change. John discusses why government’s abdication of statutory responsibilities on dog/animal welfare protection legislation has reached intolerable levels. Hercule
7 mei 2023 · 35 min
Phil Heckels, AKA Hercule Van Wolfwinkle, is a pet portrait artist with a self-proclaimed ‘ultra-realistic style’ that has gained him worldwide fame and an ever-increasing gaggle of disgruntled customers trying to get their hands on him! But all of that changed one late summer afternoon in 2020 when, whilst trying to coerce his young son into making some thank you cards, he doodled a picture of their family dog. The picture was rubbish, so naturally he stuck it on Facebook.
Little did he know that post would go viral and his work would soon be in high demand with requests for portraits flooding into his inbox in their tens of thousands from all over the globe.
Hercule’s self-proclaimed ‘ultra-realistic’ style is akin to that of a small child who has never seen an animal before and is only just learning how to hold a pencil properly, but people like it. A large social media following and worldwide media coverage catapulted Hercule into the limelight and he has used this exposure to raise money for his chosen charities, Turning Tides Ending Local Homelessness and StreetVet. Hercule does not take paid commission requests. All of the portraits are free and are just uploaded to his social media pages in return for a discretionary donation to the charity (more information can be found on the Facebook page). To date he has raised over £260,000 and counting and this fundraising has seen Hercule receive a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister, recognised by The Big Issue as one of their 100 Change Makers for 2021, and named as the ‘Creative Fundraiser of The Year’ at the 2022 Just Giving Awards. Hannah Molloy
16 april 2023 · 35 min
This week Anna is joined by Trainer and Behaviour consultant, Hannah Molloy. With a BSc in Animal Behaviour, she has written “What’s Your Dog Thinking?’, starred on Channel 4’s Puppy School and most recently organised sessions at APDAWG on ‘Dog Bites’. We discuss how Hannah decided make dogs her main focus rather than working with horses or cats. She started her career working in the Birmingham area and over seven years trained over 10,000 dogs in group sessions and one to ones.
We chat about why dog bite incidents are on the rise and whether it's directly related to the the pandemic, and the sudden surge in dog ownership, or whether it's a problem that’s been brewing for sometime. Hannah believes since about 2003. Her aim is to guide people towards dogs that suit our modern lifestyles, ones that can adapt to apartment living, bred for temperament and health. She champions that greater responsibility needs to be taken, and an awareness of our Duty of Care as defined in the Animal Welfare Act, and refined as the Five Domains. We discuss over exaggerated features in breeds, which arguably has spear headed certain breeds huge popularity leading to dogs being sold online, which continues to boom, despite campaigning to stop puppy shopping on the internet. 9 april 2023 · 27 min
This week we’re joined by Holistic guru, Caroline Griffiths, who talks about the first Natural Dog Expo coming soon on May 7th . Packed with leading lights and globally recognised experts highlighting natural health for dogs - from raw feeding, the microbiome, to homeopathy and more! We chat about how an awareness of natural options is becoming more ‘mainstream’, particularly where nutrition is concerned as humans’ greater awareness is increasingly transferred to their dogs. We also chat about Caroline’s famous Canine Flow retreats, where she focuses on channeling energy into balance drawing on inspiration from traditional Chinese theories on Qi and the Vital Force from Homeopathy. Dr Andrew Prentis
2 april 2023 · 46 min
Vet and Environmental campaigner, Andrew Prentis is also a ‘fellow’ at Imperial College. He is amongst the team of scientists that have advised pet owners to be more sparing in their use of toxic flea and tic treatments, warning that they are entering watercourses and damage aquatic ecosystems. Reviewing 160 scientific papers on the impact on aquatic ecosystems of imidacloprid, a pesticide used in 138 pet treatments sold in the UK. They found that “one monthly flea treatment for a large dog contains enough imidacloprid to kill 25 million bees". In the decade up to 2019, the sale of the pesticide for veterinary use in the UK increased 152 per cent. In that year, 2,500kg of the substance were sold for veterinary use, not much less than the 4,000kg used in 2014 for combined agricultural and veterinary use. We discuss how we can change our approach to parasite control in our pets by adopting a Test Before You Treat approach that’s used in Scandinavia where Vets only prescribe treatments if an animal actually has fleas. Certainly where wormers are also concerned (similarly penetrating waterways and the landscape), there’s an easy alternative simply by testing your pet’s poop. If no worms are found, why give your dog a wormer? One of the sticking points of the discussion is that the market for parasite control in the vet industry is valued at £170 million. We chat about how practices could recoup this revenue in other proactive ways. Lees meer

Esther Logue of Paleo Ridge
26 maart 2023 · 45 min
This week Anna is joined by Esther Logue from Paleoridge. As the leading raw food firms’ Content & Communications’ Manager, we chat about the success of this year’s Crufts, and how the company brought feeding raw to life at the biggest dog show in the world. We talk about why Crufts is such an educational platform and so needed in an age where dog ownership has boomed almost making it unrecognisable compared to back in circa 2002. Featuring a meat grinder and ’diner’ on their stand the team offered tastings on their stand, along with expert nutrition talks to an audience eager to learn more. Their dogs meanwhile had a great time too enjoying free samples of Paleoridge’s new meaty treats. We also talk in detail about studying Naturopathic Nutrition and why it literally explains why and how: YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT! Lees meer

Sarah Jones and Yellow Dog Day II
19 maart 2023 · 29 min
This week Anna is joined by Sarah Jones who rescued Bella nine years ago. After Bella experienced a couple of dog attacks, and soft tissue damage, she became very nervous when dogs invaded her space. She also associated her emotional and physical pain with strangers approaching, and could appear quite aggressive. Sarah found walking Bella increasingly stressful, and decided to launch an initiative to help other owners coping with fear reactively. Realising that many ‘pandemic’ generation dogs display some sort of anxiety, many of whom have no recall, there’s lots of dogs unaware of how to socialise with unknown doggies, Sarah devised a range of yellow leads, collars, bandanas, and jackets, which is the colour recognised to highlight that your dog needs some space. Understanding that thousands of dogs suffer with being reticent about being approached, Sarah launched #DogsInYellow last year. As a dedicated day to celebrate nervous dogs, and respect their differences, rather than be misunderstood, causing some stressful situations for both the dogs and their guardians. A recent survey of 1,000 dog owners revealed that 78% of owners felt more confident going out to public spaces with the signatory yellow leads and harnesses. So the range of yellow accessories continues to expand offering poop bag holders, bandanas and more. It’s the Yellow Army. Lees meer

The English Toy Terrier
5 maart 2023 · 35 min
This week we’re joined by Jonny Nagler who is passionate about the English Toy Terrier (ETT) and his ETT, Milo, is Mr Binks' cousin. With Crufts now just a few days away, we talk about the ETT as one of 34 native breeds that are deemed ‘vulnerable’. This means they are technically rarer than the giant Panda. The Kennel Club helps a lot in raising awareness for these breeds as they define our British history with dogs as defined in so much fine art from the Victorian era when enthusiasts began creating many breeds for a specific purpose. Many are terriers who would have helped keep our homes and back yards rat free in an age without sewers. We chat about the ETT that is the 8th most endangered of these breeds. With only 64 puppies born last year it's a figure in stark contrast to Britain’s most popular dog - the Labrador, with over 50,000 puppies born last year. There’s a lot of limited views on breeds with most new pandemic pet parents opting for designer cross breeds. Often the more unlikely the mix, the more ‘caché’ they are! We chat about what’s lined up for the ETT this year at Crufts, not least on the Pets As Therapy stand where Jonny and Milo will be supporting during the show. Jonny and Milo (a registered PATS dog) have gone the extra mile in this capacity to bring a little joy to those in need. Lees meer

Dr Nick Thompson
26 februari 2023 · 37 min
This week Anna is joined by Dr Nick Thompson, known as the Holistic Vet. We chat about vaccines, but also about minimising chemicals in your home. Science proves that indoor environments can be 100 times more toxic than outdoors. With this in mind Dr Nick talks about his experience using ‘probiotic therapy’. We chat about his experience with his own dogs in terms of Dental Care and with Dog Dental Month upcoming, it's a timely reminder that tooth brushing is not always the full proof answer in dogs or indeed humans. This why diet plays a major role. Dr Nick has long championed feeding a raw balanced and complete diet and we chat about why keeping your dog’s mouth full of good bacteria, rather than creating a sterile environment created by sterile diets, is so easy yet important! Biscuit kibble gets stuck in dogs gums, and tiny particles remain overtime to create a pro-inflammatory reaction and gum disease. Conversely, feeding raw fuels the digestive system, the microbiome, and creates an environment in the mouth for good bacteria to flourish and counter any bad bacteria, which helps keep disease at bay. This coupled with regular treatment with Ingenious Probiotics’ Dental Spray has Dr Nick’s thumb’s up. Similarly for dogs fed on kibble diets especially adding some Collar-gen will replenish what is missing from a sterile biscuit diet. Collagen depletes in all mammals with age, and as a structural protein is essential for strong bones, and healthy soft tissue, including teeth and gums. Lees meer

Joe Flanagan on Pro-biotics
19 februari 2023 · 40 min
This week Anna is joined by CEO of Ingenious Probiotics about what represents an explosion in the science of healthy bacteria. We discuss probiotics in an external environment rather than an internal one. Based on our knowledge, albeit recent and expanding, we understand the vital role of probiotics as balancing bacteria in our microbiome. Joe discusses how we can use probiotics as a cleaning product to kill pathogens indoors with out adding chemicals. Too many chemicals in the home environment can make your indoor environment 100 times more toxic than outdoors. The issue with dogs is that the explore the world nose first, and sadly overtime many chemicals used in the home leach / off gas very toxic ‘endocrine disruptors’ that can play havoc at a cellular level. Choosing a more natural option to work symbiotically with nature can also be used to clean ears, remove tear stains, and clean teeth. Joe talks about the range of products from shampoos to sprays for the coat. Thinking about how the enzymes also work we discuss how the the probiotics actually work to keep good bacteria in the environment and react accordingly to the pathogens in the environment. As an emerging science , this episode clarifies we’ve just begun to scratch the surface of probiotics in the context of us having lived in a very sterile world. Lees meer

The Legendary Dr Jean Dodds
12 februari 2023 · 43 min
This week we’re joined by the legend that is Dr Jean Dodds talking about vaccines. As one of the pioneers to research the duration of immunity (DOI) of modern vaccines, Dr Jean has led the way for the WSAVA (The World Small Animal Veterinary Association) to recommend Titre Testing over annual boosters. Having studied how the DOI of initial puppy shots can last a minimum of three years, if not a life time, Dr Jean believes in #TestBeforeYouTreat and that’s for annual vaccines as well as wormers. A Titre tests picks up the serological immunity that your dog has developed against the core diseases: Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis, and helps pet guardians manage their dog’s immunisation rather than over vaccinate. For over five decades Dr Jean has noted the side effects of many vaccines, not least from the ingredients or adjuvants that are added including Mercury. We chat about the difference between active vaccines and non-active vaccines, and the possible side effects from the latter, and what you can do to minimise the risks. We chat about the best time to vaccinate your puppy, and we also discuss Hemopet the blood bank Dr Jean founded in 1986 where bloods for Thyroid assessments are sent globally. In 2015 Dr Jean published the best selling book Canine Nutrigenomics - foods to heal your dog naturally. We also talk about environmental stressors and the food chain too! Lees meer

Andrew Hale
5 februari 2023 · 50 min
This week we’re joined by Andrew Hale. As a certified dog behaviourist, one of the founders of the UK Dog Charter and much more, he runs his practice in south Devon called Dog Certified Care. We chat about how his human psychology degree and work in practice for people inspired helping owners and their dogs. Without ‘humanisation’ Andrew talks about why we must factor the emotional experience into training and behaviour, indeed life itself. With so much science highlighting emotional intelligence in all animals, especially dogs, Andrew’s view is about ensuring dogs are kept safe but allowed free expression. And seeing learning as an interaction, building a relationship rather than exclusively on operant conditioning. It goes without saying we discuss why lifestyle, experience, accommodation must be factored into the choice of dog. How stress causes disease, and why humans can be emotional contagions. We chat about a natural remedy helping balancing the modern life stressors with calmer dogs, calmer people and a more harmonious relationship. Lees meer
