  2. Please Advise: I Told a Young Woman to Be Less Bubbly at Work. Was I Wrong?

How much of yourself should you actually bring to work? You hear it all the time: “Bring your whole self.” Then again, “Don’t bring your whole self.” Lees meer

This is the season finale of the first season of Please Advise, and your host Suzy Welch is flipping the script on advice-giving. After Suzy told a young woman to stop giggling, stop touching her hair, and overall stop being bubbly at work, her newsletter readers did not hold back. Two of them join her to disagree live: Elena, who fired off an email titled “Too bubbly???” and Jodie, a trauma surgeon and former cheerleader whose own email to Suzy was epic.

What follows is a debate about whether authenticity at work is a right or something you earn, how gender changes the answer, and how to tell a company that wants your real self from one that only wants the polished version.

Thank you for an incredible first season of Please Advise! Suzy will be back with a new one soon, so if you have questions, submit it through the link below.

  3. 6 Jobs You Should Not Take Right Now (Part 1)

“Do not, under any circumstances, take that job.” Lees meer

Everyone’s always telling you what job to take. This week, Suzy and Becoming You Labs chief economist Sania Khan tell you about the six you should think twice about, in a two-part series on the jobs that look good today but may leave you without a life raft tomorrow.

With hiring slowing and people clinging to the jobs they have, the temptation to say yes to any offer is real. But some of the most appealing roles come with risks that don’t show up on a resume: jobs where you’re indispensable but can’t prove it, jobs at companies that keep AI out of your hands, and jobs where you’ll take the blame for what AI gets wrong.

This week, Suzy and Sania take on the first three jobs, with real examples, current data, and practical ways to protect yourself if you’re already in one of them. You may even have one of these jobs right now. And if you do, there’s still realistic hope.

If you know someone who might be in one of these roles, forward them this episode.

This week on season 1 of Please Advise on the Becoming You podcast, Suzy’s guest is a friend who casually asked a question over dinner: what if my greatest aptitude is my personality? Allison Avery is a longtime HR professional and trained Jungian psychoanalyst figuring out what comes next. Now they’re taking it live, with a conversation about why we trust the skills we’ve had to earn, more than the ones that come naturally, and what changes when you stop treating your biggest gift as a consolation prize.

  5. Why Dating Feels So Hopeless Right Now (and What to Do About It) with Sabrina Zohar

    20 oktober 2026 · 50 min

    Afspelen
Love hurts. Love heals. Love is blind. Love conquers all. So which is it? And should you give your whole life over to finding that one special person, or treat romance as just one part of a full life? Lees meer

This week on Becoming You, Suzy takes on the value of romantic love, or Belovedness: how much you want to organize your life around one special person. This is part of our 16-episode series on the values that drive how we live, and the data on it might change how you think about love.

Suzy shares how Americans actually rank romance right now, and why the answer looks very different depending on whether you’re married, divorced, or single. Then she goes back in time, with a surprising history of marriage and the idea that the version of romance we’re all raised on is a very recent invention.

Then dating and relationship coach Sabrina Zohar, host of The Sabrina Zohar Show, and NYT bestselling author of "Why Am I Like This?" joins Suzy to talk about the state of dating in 2026, why so many people have lost hope, and what happened when she stopped waiting to be chosen and started choosing.

And Suzy closes with a personal story about love, loss, and the value she almost left out entirely.

  6. Please Advise: I’m Pivoting Careers. How Do I Sell Myself Without the “Right” Experience?

    15 oktober 2026 · 20 min

Dominique is heading to business school this fall to pivot from PR and communications into venture capital, and she wants to know: How do I turn my non-traditional background into a differentiator instead of something I have to explain away? Lees meer

This week on Please Advise, the call-in show of Becoming You, Suzy knows exactly how Dominique feels. When she arrived at Harvard Business School in 1986 as a Miami crime reporter, nobody wanted her in their study group. Suzy’s non-traditional background made her an outsider, until it didn’t. Suzy shares how she turned that outsider status around, then looks at Dominique’s Values Bridge results and finds something that changes the way she answers the question.

Then Suzy gets to the question Dominique actually asked, with advice for anyone making a career pivot: Stop leading with your resume, and tell your own story, values, aptitudes, and interests included.

  7. The King of New York’s Hottest Club Has Seen It All. And He’ll Never Leave. With Fabrizio Brienza

Is this the best town in the world, or do you need to get out of here? For some people, there’s only one answer, and it’s never negotiable. Lees meer

This week on Becoming You, Suzy skips the scholar and brings in someone who lives the value of Place, which is the value of location, out loud: Fabrizio Brienza, the “Door God” who decides who gets into Paul’s Casablanca, one of the hottest clubs in New York. Born in Campobasso, Italy, and shaped by Miami and Los Angeles, Fabrizio is clear that after New York, everywhere else feels like going from a Rolls-Royce to a Toyota Corolla. Yes, with the rats and all.

In this latest installment of a 16-part series on the values that drive how we live, Suzy tells the story of how Place became a gatekeeping value in her scientifically-validated assessment, The Values Bridge: Where you live is one of the first things to figure out before you plan anything else.

  8. Please Advise: How Do I Close the Gap Between the Life I Want and the Life I'm Living?

    8 oktober 2026 · 27 min

    Afspelen
How long can you hold your breath? That's what it feels like when you're not living one of your top values: like being underwater, searching for a surface you can't see. Lees meer

This week on Please Advise, Suzy talks to Michelle, an architect and firm partner in her early 40s with three kids in first, second, and third grade. Michelle took the Values Bridge last year and found the results transformational, but one thing surprised her. Her top values are a tie between Eudemonia (wellbeing, self-care, balance) and Beholderism (a love of beautiful things), yet work has always felt central to her life. Her question: can work or family be how you live your values, even if they aren't values themselves?

Then Michelle shares a number that stops the conversation: a 72% Authenticity Gap on Eudemonia, which is the distance between how much she wants to live that value and how much she actually does. Suzy's rule of thumb is that anything over 50% means the house is on fire.

Why is the gap so big, and what closes it? Suzy's diagnosis comes from a value Michelle barely mentioned, and the prescription is surprisingly doable.

  9. Does Family Really Have to Come First? With Vienna Pharaon

    6 oktober 2026 · 36 min

    Afspelen
Suzy is obsessed with her grandchildren. Completely, unapologetically obsessed. But for most of her life, she didn't organize her decisions around family, and for a long time that came with a question a lot of people are afraid to ask: Does putting myself before my family make me a bad person? Lees meer

Becoming You is about figuring out what actually matters to you so you can make better choices about your work, your relationships, and your life. One way to get there is the Values Bridge, Suzy’s scientifically validated assessment that identifies the values that really drive you, not the ones you think you're supposed to have. In this 16-part series, Suzy is exploring those values one at a time. This week: Familycentrism, one of the most emotionally loaded values of all.

Family therapist Vienna Pharaon joins Suzy to unpack why family comes with so many expectations and why the "black sheep" is often just the person with lower Familycentrism. Then Becoming You certified coach Lola Persons gets personal about loving her family fiercely without building her life around them, and why she calls it "not the Brady Bunch, but it's okay."

Because maybe the question was never how much you love your family. Maybe it's how much of your life you want to organize around them, and whether we can stop judging the people who answer differently. Where does Familycentrism fall for you? 10. Please Advise: Do You Actually Have the Talent, or Just the Interest?

    1 oktober 2026 · 30 min

    Afspelen
Jes is 27, works in the nonprofit sector, and has a not-so-secret dream: she wants to be a writer. The problem, as she sees it, is a values conflict — she wants her work to be seen, but she doesn't want to be famous, and she wants to make money, but writing doesn't pay unless you're willing to put your whole life on display. Lees meer

This week on Please Advise, Suzy starts down that path with Jes, but the conversation doesn't stay there. Underneath the values question is a harder one nobody had asked yet: does Jes actually have the aptitude to be a writer, or does she just love the idea of it? Suzy calls in some radical candor to find out.

What emerges isn't "don't chase the dream." There’s a sharper, more useful answer, and Suzy helps Jes map out a path that actually aligns. It's a conversation about ambition, honesty, and the difference between an interest and an aptitude. As Suzy puts it, an interest without the aptitude to back it up has another name: a hobby.

  11. 3 Numbers That Explain the Most Divided Value in America with Ryan Burge

There may be no value more contentious than this one — so contentious that Suzy Welch almost didn't include it in her own methodology at all. Lees meer

This episode is the next installment of an epic 16-part deep dive, one episode for each of the 16 values in the language Suzy created with the Values Bridge, her scientifically validated assessment tool. This week's value is Cosmos — faith, in any tradition, not one in particular — and it's the most polarized value on the entire Values Bridge at that.

Suzy sits down with Ryan Burge, professor at Washington University in St. Louis, author of “The Vanishing Church,” and the researcher behind the Substack “Graphs About Religion,” to unpack the state of faith in America today. Suzy also gets personal, telling the story of her own faith journey since age 14, and confessing something she's never said on the podcast before. Tune in for more.

  12. Please Advise: How Do I Chase a Big Dream Without Losing Everything?

    24 september 2026 · 26 min

    Afspelen
Lily is 68, newly retired, and bored out of her mind. What she really wants now is to do something so scary it keeps her up at night. Lees meer

This week as season 1 of Please Advise continues, Suzy talks to Lily, who's had more lives than most: news anchor, reporter, road manager for a band touring Quebec, medical claims specialist, full-time felting artist (yes, a piece of hers once went to Stevie Nicks), and, most recently, a coordinator at the VA. She's got the courage, the resume, and even a vision board, but one thing keeps holding her back: a very low tolerance for financial risk.

Suzy digs into Lily's values, aptitudes, and interests, and lands on the breakthrough — which isn't even the idea itself. It's Suzy's reframe of how to get there. Stop imagining the five-day version and start with the five-hour one. Small experiments, low risk, real data, one step before the next.

It's a conversation about courage at any age, the difference between dreaming big and starting small, and why it's never too late to place the chips on yourself.

Suzy shares her own bruising run-in with office politics from her early career days, before turning diagnostic on Christina's story.

And it points toward one particular next move: Stop trying to survive inside a culture that will always clash with who you are, and go build the one that won't. It's a conversation about self-awareness, entrepreneurship, and the difference between throwing in the towel and finally stepping into your authentic self.

This week on Please Advise, your host Suzy Welch talks to a fellow Suzy — Atlanta's own "Suzie Sunshine" — who has found herself stuck with where to turn next. Now in her mid-50s, with her children grown, and with over 30 jobs in her lifetime, Suzie Sunshine is nowhere near ready to slow down, but isn’t sure which is the best path to take.

Your host Suzy goes straight into diagnostic mode, tracing the story back to a seventh-grade dream of acting, a magazine article that scared her off it, and a quiet, decades-long override by one of the Four Horsemen of Values Destruction. Suzy walks through Suzie Sunshine's top values and lands on an answer that actually has nothing to do with another job title at all.

    15 september 2026 · 59 min

    Afspelen
How do you make a fun, upbeat podcast about a value that makes literally everyone uncomfortable — the people who have it and the people who don't? That's the challenge Suzy Welch sets for herself this week on Becoming You. Lees meer

This episode is the next installment of an epic 16-part deep dive, one episode for each of the 16 values in the language Suzy created with The Values Bridge, her scientifically validated assessment tool. We all hold these values, ranked 1 to 16 in a different order for each of us, and understanding the language can change everything. That's because values aren't virtues like happiness or honesty — they're choices about how you live your life, and there's no good or bad, right or wrong, about which ones you hold.

This week's value is Radius: the drive to change the world in big, systemic ways. Suzy explains why so few of us have it (just 10%, ranking 14 out of 16 values) and reveals the single most shocking data point in the Values Bridge dataset about it. Suzy also draws a hard line between Radius and its frequently confused cousin, Non-Sibi — the value of helping people one-on-one — and explains why wanting to change the world doesn't necessarily mean wanting to help people individually.

Then Suzy goes to 20,000 feet with Dr. Jay Van Bavel, professor of psychology and neuroscience at NYU and author of The Power of Us, to debate whether Radius is a value or an identity — and to unpack why movements built around Radius so often turn on themselves. Finally, Suzy sits down with Kitty Block, CEO of Humane World for Animals, whose own Radius story involves twenty veterinarians, a runaway dog, and a face full of bruises.

  16. Please Advise: What Happens When Your Family Doesn't Like the New You?

"I want the old you back." Sometimes that's how the people closest to you respond when you start actually living your values — and it's exactly what this week’s caller Brie is running into with her own family, on this episode of Please Advise. Lees meer

Suzy takes two listener calls this week. First, Ana, 44, back on the job hunt after a sabbatical, doing everything by the book: networking, applying, staying intentional. Yet still hitting silence. Suzy walks through Ana's values and aptitudes and lands on the real problem: it's not her, it's her tactics. Suzy shares her advice after years of being on both sides of the desk.

Then Brie calls in. She's gotten clear on her values and is living more aligned with them than ever, except her family isn't sure what to make of the new her. Suzy names what's actually happening: Brie's family is confusing values with virtues, and reading her growth as a rejection of them. Suzy walks through her own version of this story, including a hard-won truce with her own kids over Workcentrism and Achievement, and makes the case that naming your values out loud, to the people who love you, is what keeps you close instead of growing apart.

This week on Becoming You’s Please Advise series, your host Suzy Welch takes two more listener calls. Erin is a 55-year-old single mom of three, working a job in HR that's quietly hollowing her out, and she wants to know: does she stick it out until she knows exactly what to do next, or does she leave now? Suzy walks through Erin's top values and lands on a piece of advice that has nothing to do with a resume: Stop building the website, and start building the business. Lees meer

Then Suzy talks to Parnian, an executive and entrepreneur navigating the "messy middle" of career, marriage, and family planning all at once, who asks how women can better lean on each other to get ahead. Suzy's answer takes an unexpected turn into a new definition of resilience, and a hard line she draws for her students: Don't network, make friends. It's Suzy at her most personal, weaving in stories from her own divorce, her PhD, and a friendship that changed the entire trajectory of her career.

Real questions, real answers, no scripts — Please Advise Season 1 continues.

  19. Is AI Coming for Your Job? An Economist Gives It to Me Straight

    1 september 2026 · 40 min

    Afspelen
This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch hits pause on the values deep-dive series for something urgent: the state of work today. After Suzy casually dropped the phrase "job hugging" on a recent appearance at the Today Show — which is the trend of people gripping their jobs because they're terrified of what's coming — the reaction was, in Suzy's words, an internet meltdown. So she brought in Chief Labor Economist Sania Khan, formerly of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and then an AI company, to separate the panic from the data. Lees meer

They get into it: whether AI is coming for every job or about to create a wave of new ones, why "low hire, low fire" is quietly locking younger workers out of the labor market, and why a second-year analyst should be more nervous right now than almost anyone else in the building. Sania lays out the proactive work exercise she'd give any 22-year-old, or any 40-year-old, staring down a job that suddenly needs a rewrite.

If you've got a job, want a job, or are quietly panicking about either, this one's for you.

"What do you do when you hate what you're good at?" asks Lynn, while Beth wonders, "As your kids become teenagers, who should be in charge of making the decisions — you, or them?" Rebecca calls in for advice about The Values Bridge value of Belovedness, the value of romantic love: "When you lose the person you love, what does it mean to let that value go?" And last but definitely not least, Suzy gets the most serious question of all from her best friend and returning podcast guest, Sue: "What should you do when your best friend makes you snort from laughter?"

  21. The Value We All Judge the Most

    25 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 6 min

This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch continues the series' deep dive into the 16 human values with one of the most misunderstood: Workcentrism, the value of organizing your life around work. It ranks 15 out of 16 for the general population, and it's the only value in the entire Values Bridge inventory with a negative authenticity gap — meaning most people want even less of it, not more. Lees meer

Suzy unpacks why Workcentrism is unique among all the values: it's the one you may not hold, but are still forced to express. She's joined by Tina Doran, SVP of Retail and Commerce at Mastercard, who has Workcentrism as her number-one value, for a conversation about what it actually feels like to build a life around work without apology.

Then Suzy sits down with Jennifer Tosti-Kharas of Babson College and Christopher Wong Michaelson of NYU and the University of St. Thomas, co-authors of “Is Your Work Worth It?”, to explore why society equates high Workcentrism with workaholism, why hiring managers reward it even when performance data doesn't back it up, and why the pandemic, quiet quitting, and the shifting economy have all reshaped how we relate to work. As always, Suzy reminds us: values aren't virtues, they're choices — and no one should be judged for the ones they hold.

  22. The Three Things Working Against Your Friendships

Suzy Welch was standing in her kitchen when the phone rang. Her best friend's voice was different before she even said a word. "I can't be friends with you anymore," she said — and hung up. It was the last time they spoke for fifteen years. Lees meer

There's no word for that kind of loss. No apparatus, no ceremony, no bereavement leave, no language for losing a friend the way there is for a marriage or a family. This week on Becoming You, Suzy digs into why.

She starts with the data on The Values Bridge value of Belonging — a value that lands dead center for most people, #8 out of 16, and is the value of friendship, community, and being part of the group. Only 1% of people have it as their #1 value. Suzy talks with one such person, Rachel Gillman Rischall of The Connection Code, about what it's like to live Belonging as a top value, runs down the three biggest eurekas she had preparing for this episode, and sits down with NYU Stern's friendship expert Julianna Pillemer to discuss the surprising science of friendship at work.

Finally, Suzy reunites with Sue Jacobson, the friend from that phone call, to talk about what really happened, why it took fifteen years to find out, and what brought them back.

  23. The Four Things No One Tells You About Fame

    11 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 1 min

    Afspelen
This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch takes on fame, or what the Becoming You methodology calls Luminance, one of the 16 values measured by The Values Bridge, Suzy's psychometric tool for figuring out what actually matters to you. And of all 16, this is the one people are least willing to own. Only 3% rank it in their top 5. Most people bury it near the very bottom. Suzy thinks that's not because so few of us feel it, it's because it's the one value you're not supposed to say out loud. Lees meer

Suzy opens with a story she's never quite gotten over: a college friend whose hunger for fame she once dismissed, judged, and didn't understand, and the friendship it cost her, for good, decades later. She goes back 3,000 years to Achilles, who's given a choice between a long forgotten life and a short one with undying glory, and picks glory, and nobody in the Iliad thinks he's a narcissist for it. Then she gets into the actual research on why people want to be known: for status, for a platform to do good, as the byproduct of doing great work, or simply so they're not forgotten.

Plus: actress Paloma Garcia-Lee talks with real candor about what it's like to hold this value and live it out loud, and casting director Sophia Welch (and frequent guest, and Suzy’s daughter), who's spent 14 years in rooms full of people chasing the spotlight, rejoins to talk about what fame really rewards, and what it really costs.

If you've ever wanted to be known, or caught yourself judging someone else for wanting it, this episode is for you.

Agency is the number two value in the Becoming You data set—the drive to be the author of your own life, no exceptions, no apologies. But according to Suzy, it's the Jekyll and Hyde of values: sometimes it's your best friend, helping you build the life you actually want. Other times it's the thing quietly running through the history of wars, divorces, and career fails, because your Agency is always bumping up against someone else's. Lees meer

In this deep dive episode, Suzy takes you 3,000 years back to the earliest recorded signs of Agency. She sits down with NYU Stern self-determination scholar Steve Blader to unpack why some people need to run their own show and others don't. And she talks to Pastor Jimmy Scroggins about the 18% of people for whom Agency is a low value—including what it actually means to hand your Agency over to a higher power, and why that's not the same thing as having none.

Plus: entrepreneur and content creator Drew Henry joins to talk about how Agency shaped his career pivot from corporate marketing to working for himself—and the time it got him called into an HR meeting over an out-of-office request. (You'll want to hear the email he sent.)

  25. The Three Things No One Tells You About Happiness

    28 juli 2026 · 40 min

This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch tackles the value everyone assumes they already understand: happiness. Using data from the Values Bridge — the assessment that has now been taken by hundreds of thousands of people — Suzy reveals that Eudemonia, the value of personal happiness, self care, flourishing, and fun, is far from universal. It skews by gender, it drops off sharply with age, and it even shifts with income. Lees meer

Suzy traces the philosophical fault lines around happiness, from Aristotle's insistence that it's a whole life and not a good afternoon, to the Stoics' case for tranquility over feeling, to the Buddhist idea that the chase itself might be the trap. Along the way, she shares a deeply personal story about discovering Dostoevsky in tenth grade and dropping it on her family at Christmas dinner — with her sister Elin along to set the record straight. Whether Eudemonia sits at the top of your values list or, like Suzy's, near the bottom, this episode makes the case that knowing exactly where you stand on fun and self care is one of the most useful things you can know about yourself.

  27. Your Values Aren’t What You Think They Are

    21 juli 2026 · 47 min

    Afspelen
This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch takes a step back to answer a question that is central to the podcast and the Becoming You methodology: what even are values? Values are one of the three core data sets at the heart of the Becoming You methodology, alongside interests and aptitudes, but Suzy's research shows that only 17% of people actually understand what values are — and just 7% know their own. So before going any further with the series, this episode is a full reset: a deep dive into what values actually mean. Lees meer

Suzy lays out the real definition — values are the deeply held beliefs that drive our choices, not to be confused with virtues, the things we all agree are simply good to have — and then puts that definition to the test by reacting in real time to a lineup of well-known voices weighing in on values, including Mark Manson, Ellen DeGeneres, Matthew McConaughey, Jay Shetty, and Gary Vee. Along the way, Suzy separates genuine values from virtues, life advice, and personality traits, and introduces her own framework, the Values Bridge, along with the "four horsemen of values destruction" that keep people from living the values they actually hold.

She also answers one of the questions she gets asked most often: can your values change? Suzy explains why the answer is more nuanced than most people think — and what it takes to actually uncover your own value hierarchy.

With this foundation in place, Suzy sets up what's coming next: a full series working through each of the 16 values in the Welch Bristol Values Inventory, one by one.

This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch delivers the finale of one of the most personal series she has ever shared on this podcast. Part 3 has it all: the last three aptitude tools, the twist she wasn't sure she'd tell, and the moment the whole story finally makes sense. Lees meer

For anyone just arriving: go back. Don't worry, we'll wait! Parts 1 and 2 are there for you, and this ending lands so much more when you know where it started.

For everyone who's been here from the beginning, here's where we are. Suzy walks through the final three tools she uses in her Becoming You class at NYU Stern to help students identify their aptitudes: the Career Traits Compass, a framework she developed herself; the Enneagram, explored in depth with one of the world's leading experts, Rasanath Das; and the Viewfinder, a 360-degree tool that reveals something most people overlook entirely — how the world actually experiences you.

And then there's Dan. The classmate who humiliated Suzy in front of 90 people at Harvard Business School back in 1988. The story this whole series has been building toward. The epilogue Suzy wasn't sure she'd share, and the one she now believes may be the real reason she wanted to tell this story at all.

The conviction at the heart of all of it: know your aptitudes, claim them, and live them, because you cannot let someone else write your story for you.

  29. The Insult That Changed My Life Could Change Yours — and Probably Should. (Part 2)

Last week, Suzy Welch got publicly humiliated at Harvard Business School. This week? Revenge. Lees meer

In Part 2 of this three-part series, Suzy picks up where the insult left off — tracing what happened in the immediate aftermath of the incident, the fire it lit inside her, and the very Sicilian response she chose: becoming a Baker Scholar, joining Bain, and making sure no one ever had to guess what her brain was capable of again. Her first husband Eric is back as an eyewitness to all of it.

But this episode isn't just about Suzy's story. It's about yours. Because once Suzy understood what her aptitudes actually were — and learned how to name them — everything changed. And the same can happen for you.

That's why today she's diving into the first of four ways to identify your cognitive aptitudes, featuring the assessment she uses in her Becoming You class at NYU Stern: YouScience. Aptitudes expert and Your Hidden Genius co-author Betsy Wills is back to walk you through what it measures, what it reveals, and why the results have a way of making everything suddenly make sense.

Next week: the final three aptitude assessments, including the Enneagram — and the unexpected epilogue to the Dan story that Suzy still hasn't fully made sense of herself.

  30. The Insult That Changed My Life Could Change Yours — and Probably Should. (Part 1)

    30 juni 2026 · 49 min

    Afspelen
This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch opens a three-part series with a confession: she is, apparently, obsessed with insults. Creative ones. Clever ones. The kind that hit so precisely they feel almost prophetic. And there's a reason for that — because once, a long time ago, one insult hit her so hard and so publicly that it changed the entire trajectory of her life. And it just might change yours. Lees meer

But before she gets to the story, Suzy makes the case for something most of us can't actually do: name our aptitudes. Not what we've been told we're good at. Not what we've practiced or studied our way into. Our real, inborn, wired-in strengths, the ones that explain, once you finally see them clearly, why certain things came easily and others never did, no matter how hard you tried.

To help unpack what aptitudes actually are, Suzy sits down with Betsy Wills, co-author of Your Hidden Genius and one of the world's foremost experts on the subject. And then, for the first time on this podcast, Suzy calls in her first husband, Eric, who had a front-row seat the day the insult landed and knew exactly who Suzy was before it changed her.

The story is told in excruciating detail. The rage is real. And the revenge? That comes next week.

Suzy drops data that reframes everything: 60% of 2026 graduates are pessimistic about their careers. 70% ended up in fields unrelated to what they studied. And only 2% of Gen Z has the values hiring managers are actually looking for.

They get into the worst career advice ever given, the red flag no one warns you about in job interviews, and the one thing you can say to a hiring manager that will stop them cold, in the best possible way. And Jannah asks the question underneath all of it: how do you plan a career when you can't see what's coming?

A photo in Vogue. A 98-year-old mother's scream of joy. And a 123-year story that begins in a sulfur mine in Sicily and ends — somehow — at New York City's most glamorous luncheon. Lees meer

This week, your host Suzy Welch starts at the end: a yellow dress, handknit from silk ribbon by her immigrant grandmother, photographed at the Hat Luncheon and published in Vogue. But to understand why that moment meant everything, you have to go back. Way back. We're talking Caltanissetta, Sicily, in 1903, and a family shrouded in secrecy and silence.

Part 1 of this two-part series sets the scene: from the dazzling spectacle of the Hat Luncheon to the gritty, industrial world Suzy's family fought to escape. Next week, the scandal that changed everything.

Your own origin story might look a little different after this one.

This week, your host Suzy Welch sits down with two women who actually did just that. Cassie is a Forbes Top 200 CPA who walked away from 22 years of accolades, corner offices, and everything she was "supposed" to be. Marilyn Dollar is a certified Becoming You coach who helped her do it, and who has her own story of reinvention.

What follows is a masterclass in what living at the intersection of your values, aptitudes, and interests actually looks like in real life — which is precisely where the Becoming You methodology argues your real purpose lies. This episode chronicles the process and moment that Cassie stopped asking "why?" and started asking "why not?"

  36. My Ouchy Advice to Parents of New Graduates. Please Take It.

It's graduation season. And you, mom and dad, are about to make some very big, very loving, very misguided mistakes. Lees meer

This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch — professor, author, parent of four, and someone who got the post-graduation parenting thing spectacularly wrong at least twice before she got it right — delivers the advice nobody is giving at the graduation party.

Here's the ouchy truth: you are focused on entirely the wrong problem. The problem is not that your kid is unemployed. The problem is that your kid is unaimed. And those two things require completely different solutions. In this episode, Suzy walks you through the brutal math of this job market, the expensive lie hiding inside the grad school "solution," and the hard conversation about values that most parents are afraid to have.

The last piece of advice is the ouchy-est of all: how not to become the villain in your child's story, and how to become something far more powerful instead.

It started with a question from a student that stopped Suzy cold: "When you look back on your life, is there anything you regret? Anything you would do differently?" Lees meer

Without hesitation, Suzy's answer was: Yes. I would have done everything faster.

This week on Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch sits down with the Queen of Questions herself, Danielle Robay — journalist, host of Question Everything and Bookmarked by Reese's Book Club. They wrestle with one of life's most loaded questions: have you been moving through your life too fast, or too slow? And does it even matter, if you don't know who you are yet?

They go after the decisions we've all made too slowly — staying in the wrong marriage, the wrong job, the wrong friendship — not because we didn't know the answer, but because we didn't yet know ourselves well enough to trust it.

Suzy gets personal about the fifteen-year career detour she didn't need to take, the marriage she stayed in too long, and the moment when she finally understood that it was over. Danielle opens up about her own hustle, her rock bottoms, and the boyfriend who told her, while she was crying on the kitchen floor, to welcome herself to the club of people who are actually trying.

The verdict? There is one truth that cuts through everything: the better you know your values, the better and faster every decision becomes.

  40. Sixteen Words That Will Change How You See Yourself…and the People Around You (Part 3)

What if the reason we so often talk past each other in relationships, at work, across dinner tables, isn't stubbornness or selfishness, but simply that we don't share a common language for what we actually want? Lees meer

In the third and final installment of this series, your host Suzy Welch, creator of the scientifically validated values-discovery assessment tool The Values Bridge, draws on a story as old as time to make a bold argument: that the 16-word language of values might be one of the few things that can actually help us understand each other, not just ourselves. Cue: the Tower of Babel.

In Part I, Suzy revealed her 5 peripheral values. In Part II, her 6 moderate values. Today she reveals the big five: her core values, ranked. They might surprise you, and will no doubt prompt you to question how you've been organizing your own life.

Are you a nomad, or do you only thrive in certain locations? Do you crave excitement and stimulation, or prefer calm and stability? Do you want to change the world on nothing short of a systemic level? All of that maps directly to your values, and Suzy is answering it all here.

If you're ready to discover your own 16 values, take the Values Bridge assessment linked in the show notes, and let us know your core values in a review.

  41. Sixteen Words That Give You Permission…to Admit What You Want (Part 2)

Is it shallow to want fame? Greedy to want money? Wrong to rank work above family? This episode is about the values nobody wants to admit they have. Lees meer

In Part II of this special three-part series, your host, NYU Stern Professor Dr. Suzy Welch, continues doing something she has never done publicly before: ranking all 16 of her personal values, in order. She uses the lexicon found within The Values Bridge, the scientifically validated assessment she developed through her doctoral research at the University of Bristol.

The Values Bridge identifies 16 distinct values — each one a specific want, desire, or motivation — and gives each a name most of us have never encountered before. Learning that language is the point. Because once you can name your values with precision, everything changes: your career decisions, your relationships, your sense of purpose.

This episode covers Suzy's moderate six values, and each one comes with a surprising data point about how Americans rank it in their own lives. Along the way, Suzy explains the Becoming You methodology, the science-backed framework used by over 500,000 people with a 94% efficacy rate, and why knowing your values with precision is the missing key to finding your purpose.

If you haven't listened to Part I yet, you can go there after. By the end of this series, you’ll be fluent in the language of values. And if you're ready to discover your own using The Values Bridge, you can find the link in the show notes.

  45. Be Not Afraid (Part III): “Who Am I Without the Life I Had?”

    24 maart 2026 · 22 min

    Afspelen
Fear of change is powerful. But the deepest fear of all may be this: the fear of stepping into a life that is fully our own. In the final episode of the three-part Be Not Afraid series, your host Suzy Welch shares a deeply personal story about loss, identity, and the moment when fear gives way to decision. Lees meer

The episode revisits one of the podcast’s most intimate stories — one that longtime listeners will remember well — about a solitary swan who appeared at Suzy’s home, shortly after the death of her husband. The two formed an unusual bond, each navigating life alone after years of partnership. Then one day, the swan disappeared.

Her departure became a powerful metaphor for something many people face but rarely name: the moment when the life we knew is gone, and the future depends on choices we are not yet sure we’re ready to make. Drawing on her own experience of grief and reinvention, Suzy explores the quiet but critical turning point that follows self-discovery — the decision to act.

Because growth does not happen by accident. Reinvention does not happen by accident. Becoming does not happen by accident. It happens when we decide. This episode concludes the Be Not Afraid series with a simple but challenging question: Are you waiting for life to change… or are you ready to begin again?

  46. Be Not Afraid (Part II): “I’m Scared to Find Out Who I Really Am.”

    17 maart 2026 · 19 min

    Afspelen
Fear of the unknown gets plenty of attention. But an even deeper fear lurks beneath it: the fear of what might happen if we truly understood ourselves. In Part II of the Be Not Afraid series, your host Suzy Welch explores why self-knowledge can feel so threatening — and why so many people instinctively avoid it. Lees meer

The episode begins with a revealing experiment: Suzy once asked her colleagues to anonymously write down the first word that came to mind when they saw her name appear on their phones. Most responses were predictable. One was not. The word was “machine.”

That moment opens a larger conversation about values — how difficult they are to see clearly, and why powerful forces constantly distort them. Suzy explains the four dynamics she calls the Four Horsemen of Values Destruction: Expectations, Expedience, Events, and Economic security.

Along the way, she responds to a listener who admits she’s afraid to take The Values Bridge assessment for one simple reason: she worries the results might reveal that her life is far from aligned with what matters most. The fear is understandable. But the data tells an interesting story: almost no one is perfectly aligned with their values — and yet understanding that gap can be the beginning of real freedom.

Because the truth about ourselves can be uncomfortable. But avoiding it comes at a far greater cost. And sometimes, the moment we finally face it brings something we’ve longed for: relief.

  47. Be Not Afraid (Part I): “I Took a Sabbatical. Should I Hide That From Employers?”

    10 maart 2026 · 17 min

    Afspelen
Fear of the unknown gets a lot of attention. But the deeper fear — the one that quietly shapes our careers and lives — is something else entirely. The fear of knowing ourselves. Lees meer

In this first episode of a three-part series on fear and self-discovery, your host Suzy Welch explores why so many people avoid looking closely at who they really are — and what they truly want. Drawing inspiration from the iconic film “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” Suzy examines the psychological reality behind what researchers call information avoidance: our tendency to avoid truths that might force us to change.

She tackles a question from podcast listener Katie, who took a brave step after decades of professional success: a sabbatical to reassess her life and career. Now she faces a dilemma many people share — should she admit that she took a sabbatical on her resume, or hide it from potential employers?

This episode kicks off a three-part “Be Not Afraid” series on the courage it takes to change your life from the inside out. Because the truth is simple: If you don’t stop to ask who you are… life will eventually force the question. And the sooner you ask it, the better.

We spend so much energy worrying about saying too much – about TMI, about revealing something we might later regret. But in the process, many of us end up living with more unsaid than said, and with more authentic moments missed than taken.

On this counterintuitive (and hilarious) episode of Becoming You, host Suzy Welch speaks with Harvard professor Leslie John about the underrated power of oversharing and her new book “Revealing.”

The conversation explores what the Becoming You methodology calls an authenticity gap in the value of Voice – the distance between how much we value self-expression and how much we actually practice it. When should you reveal more of your inner world? How can revealing more build trust, deepen connection, and help you live more authentically? And what is the true cost of silence?

Oversharing isn’t the enemy. Neither is restraint. The real skill is learning how to reveal in a way that serves both you and the people around you. This conversation is about Voice, about closing the gap between what you value and how you live, and about practicing self-expression as a learnable skill.

And yes, you’ll hear a few oversharing stories that may make you rethink exactly where the line is.

In this special installment of Career Confidential, your host Suzy Welch is joined by co-host Dustin Liu, Associate Director of NYU Stern’s Initiative on Purpose and Flourishing, to break down five of the biggest career headlines shaping the world of work right now, including:

Are mass layoffs truly about AI?

Do professionals have to turn to “resume Botox” to appear younger?

Is AI a net destroyer of jobs… or the creator of entirely new careers?

What does it mean when trade workers are surpassing college grads in job security?

Why is remote work still the defining workplace battleground?

This is an episode for anyone trying to make sense of today’s career chaos, and trying to build a life of purpose and stability inside it.
