They also revisit the hallway confrontation after Nia performs, where Holly tells Abby that Nia is a dancer first — not an ethnicity first. Between the “let me pull one out of my purse” comment, Abby defending the routine as an “ethnic opportunity,” and Holly finally calling out how Nia was being portrayed, this becomes one of the earliest moments where Holly truly stands her ground.

Gianna runs rehearsal, the girls prepare their solos, and everyone tries to figure out whether Dance Moms can function without the person who usually controls the room.
And somehow, it does. The girls compete, the team keeps moving, and the drama finds a new place to land. Kendall’s music release is supposed to be the big storyline of the week, but Nia’s music career keeps getting pulled into the spotlight too, leading to a messy fight between Jill and Holly over whose daughter is finally getting a moment.

The show heads overseas to Australia... but without Abby, who gets left behind after losing her passport. Of course, that doesn't stop her from controlling everything from thousands of miles away on the phone. She yells at Melissa over the phone, questions whether the whole team was even invited to perform, and says Maddie can just dance by herself if she is not there.
This is where the Australia episode starts to expose everything. Nia and JoJo are treated like they were never really part of the plan, the moms clash over who is tied to Abby’s Australia events, and the viral Ireland video mocking JoJo brings even more tension into the trip. Then Maddie misses rehearsal for an interview while the other girls keep working as her backup dancers, only for the episode to later handle her mistake onstage completely differently than it would have handled anyone else’s.
For Christi and Kelly, this trip is not just about a lost passport or one chaotic performance. It is about the different rules, the selective protection, and the favoritism that creeps up episode after episode.

"I feel like we're consistent in the mocking of Jill." Christi might be talking about her outfits, but "Showdown in Pittsburgh, Part 2" doesn't do Jill any favors when it comes to giving her plenty of mockable moments as well. I mean is it already week three of Jill trying to convince Holly she should be grateful for what Abby does for Nia? Like WHILE Abby is actively trying to sabotage Nia at every conceivable turn? Yeah it's not one of Jill's better looks for sure.
In a rare feat for Dance Moms there's no Pyramid this week because for some reason (we still can't quite figure out why) Production decided to split this week into a two parter (for real we had less notes for this episode than we often do when we only cover half an episode, it's weird). But there's still plenty of drama abound as most of the ALDC moms show up to their last local competition sans daughters... and you kind of need them present to compete or the group can't perform! Outside of Nia and JoJo all the girls are still at JUMP, which Abby and the moms feel is very important for their careers unlike the hit TV show they're supposed to be filming. Abby assigns Nia and JoJo solos in case the rest of the team in a no show when it's their turn to perform. Nia will preform Never Knew once more and JoJo is instructed to freestyle on-stage (which we highly doubt as JoJo upstaging Nia would be to tempting for Abby to leave to chance).
The Candy Apples and Broadway Dance Academy soon crash the party to stir up the pot. Of course Jill doesn't take kindly to Cathy's interventions, but Cathy makes some great points about how Abbys been treating Nia, which Holly confirms. Jill doesn't like Holly picking sides with her enemy and starts beating the "You need to respect what Abby does for you" drum once again, but Holly points out Nia only gets chances when no one else is there to preoccupy Abby's attention. "The funniest thing was we were in hell, but you guys had your own version of hell going on," Christi reflects to our very receptive panel of guests. This week we welcome to the Barre our favorite Dance Mom Producers: Annie, Erin and Chris! If it's Dance Moms goss you're looking for, there's no better place to start than right here. No ones made it through the Dance Moms grinder in quite the same way, they've all got stories to tell and boy do they have a lot to say when we get them all together.
A fun twist now that so much time has passed is all of our guests have become parents themselves. So we want to know, how differently does it make them think about their time on the show? Do some moments seem a bit more cagey in hindsight? Would they have approached the work any differently? Speaking of work what was it like to actually work with Abby on a day to day basis? Was she really that difficult to work with (probably) and if so what's their craziest Abby story?
Plus of course we had to ask them all about what it was like to produce some of the craziest s**t ever put on television. Chris was there during the walk to prison! He did the walk too but had to lug around equipment! There's just no end to the amount of stories they have to share. They've all gone on to have fairly broad careers in both reality TV and elsewhere, but Dance Moms will always be their mark on the culture, the thing they'll be asked about for the rest of their lives. So we'll just have to keep asking!

We're back, we went to Washington D.C., and we finally figured out what a selfie stick says about your influencer era. (Spoiler: Kelly is thriving.)
WHAT WENT DOWN
First things first — Kelly got a Pro Max and we need to talk about it. The home button is gone, the cameras are fancier, and somewhere out there, Abby's iPod Nano is still buried under McDonald's wrappers in the back of a car.
From there, we took a trip to Capitol Hill because we were invited to the Support is Care Summit — a nonpartisan advocacy effort focused on making sure cancer patients get whole person support, not just medical treatment. Financial help, childcare, caregiver resources, acupuncture — the stuff nobody tells you about when you're in the thick of it. Kelly got real about how her emotional support has actually been harder after treatment than during it, and hearing other people say the same thing out loud was a moment. If you or someone you love has been touched by cancer, please look up Support is Care.
Also: Christi does not like acupuncture. She doesn't like foreign things in her body. We explored the full philosophical implications of this, given certain choices she has made. Moving on.
Then we learned two Gen Z words from Clara and her friends on the way to a Florence and the Machine concert. You're welcome in advance. Chud (rude, ugly, unintelligent — basically, don't be one) and fit-mogging (when someone's outfit is so good it upstages yours). We are educating the masses.
And THEN — we watched Vanderpump Villa, and we are here to expose it. Not recap it. Expose it. These people did not arrange those flowers. There is an entire production team. Nobody is casting someone hot enough to sleep with the guests AND talented enough to build a centerpiece, and we know this because WE LIVED IT. The cheese plates at Kelly's house? Producers. "This one is a doozy. We just need to get into it and I’m just telling everyone right now, if you’re drinking for contradictions you are going to be schmamered." And it's not just Abby fueling the contradictions this week as all the moms try and get in on the action. It really is a case of "Oops! All Contradictions".
What better way to start a contradiction heavy episode than with something that feels just as jarring, forgoing Pyramid until later in the episode! In "Video Killed the ALDC Star" we open with Abby overseeing Kendall's music video shoot. Much is made about how Nia has been excluded from the shoot and that Holly and Nia "have made their beds and now must sleep in them" which you'll quickly tire of hearing by at least the third time it's mentioned. But Nia shrugs off Abby's words when confronted directly, rightfully understanding it's more of an Abby problem than a Nia problem.
Nia's music video shoot by comparison goes over terrifically well, but the moms find a way to make an issue out of it anyways. First it's over the fact Holly waas posting too much about it... which yeah her daughter is shooting a music video wouldn't you be proud? Jill claims Holly is just trying to rub it in their faces... like no really what is this? That's clearly not what's happening but I guess the moms really just are that competitive at all times. But things get worse when Aubrey O'Day jazzes Nia on socials by claiming they're making the best ALDC member music video to date, then the moms start to get truly apocalyptic with Holly. Jill claims Aubrey's post is a direct insult towards Kendall and demands Holly apologize. Except the moms never would expect the same of Abby whose more outwardly hostile than Aubrey and directly insulted Nia before the shoot and continues to do so after!

"The camel toes are prevalent. We have prevalent camel toe!" Well not all the group outfits can be winners, but at the very least sometimes the dances can be! It's time for the ALDC to make a better first impression in Los Angeles, but will Abby's needless desire to punish Holly and Nia continue to strain the team?
Abby sets her sights on a rematch with the Murrieta Dance Project who defeated the ALDC on their last trip to Los Angeles. To do so she leans on her tried and true method of just picking her top dancers (Maddie and Kalani) for solos. Nia and Kendall meanwhile are focused on getting their music videos off the ground, but that focus sours when Nia is excluded from group events at the behest of Abby. Jill doesn't like that this angers Holly, telling her she reaps what she sows when going up against Abby... man Jill is on one lately isn't she? We knew Holly said things would get rough, but the stress is already more than we can handle!
Meanwhile Abby is starting to realize that taking on building a new studio might be a bit stressful when you're also acting on a TV show and trying to choreograph new dances each week.

"Holly hopes this trip will be better. I bet Holl, cause last time your trip sucked a big of dicks." Very eloquently put by Christi, but how else would you describe Holly's LA experience? Well you're going to need to find some even filthier language because as the ALDC returns to the City of Stars, it's only going to get worse.
"Hollywood, Round 2" isn't all that dissimilar to round one. The moms are focused on getting their girls work, and Abby is determined to put up roadblocks against those who don't fall in line with her vision of LA... oh I'm sorry according to Abby this time it's all about "coming together" as one group. Ignoring the fact they already are inherently together, Abby certainly doesn't make much of an effort to unify everyone.
Jill wants Abby to manage Kendall's music career, but Abby's contract demands are fairly steep and don't leave Jill feeling too optimistic. Still Kendall at least is getting some Abby attention and that's enough for Jill at this point. Kendall even has a music video shoot lined-up... that Abby insists has to film when Nia is shooting her own video. You know, so Nia can be excluded! Cause that's what everyone wants right?
Meanwhile the girls get a crash course in acting with some help from Dallas Lovato (Demi's sister) who comes in to give the girls some pointers. Her critiques are very helpful, but she passes through the proverbial ALDC rubicon and gives some harsh notes to Maddie?!?! Is this actually happening on Dance Moms!?

"This is so giving like hostage situation where you try to send a note out screaming for help if you've been kidnapped." You would act like that too if your dance teacher was still holding a grudge against you for doing something completely innocuous. Yes the Holly and Nia punishment train is still running at top speed, though no one is safe from Abby's cruelty this week as she attempts to both gaslight the moms and throw a fit over the Candy Apples stellar performance.
The ALDC arrives in Ohio and not 10 seconds into their entry into Candy Apples territory does Cathy and her moms come out swinging, and they're bringing out the big guns this time. It turns out while Kira had been away from the team, she texted Cathy to insult the ALDC and hype up Kalani, which not only embarrasses all the moms, but Abby acts as though it were no big deal for double the damage. Kira even tries to claim the email was about production and not the team... lol sure Jan. If that weren't enough to stress the already pressed upon team, Abby has set her team up for failure once again with weak choreography and some shockingly bad costume choices, a rare Abby miss there.
But that's nothing compared to some of the cringiest Abby mudslinging yet after a post-show Production stunt blows up as expected and Abby shouts out stuff so callous and shocking, it's a miracle it actual made the final cut of the episode. Does that mean Abby approved of it and stood by her words? Does that actually make it worse in a way? Is this possibly up there for worst Dance Mom's storyline yet!? Probably!!!

"The words Mature and Abby have been used twice and we're still in scene one," says Christi with about the level of disbelief that statement is owed. But it's an equal offender week as even Cathy is getting in on the nastiness.
This episode is called "Mackenzie's Time to Shine" and that's only because the ALDC is short a Maddie this week as she's performing with Sia on SNL. Abby decides it's time to move onto her second favorite Ziegler child and gives Mackenzie a solo. As if to emphasize put her in her place, Abby acts as if Mackenzie has no identity outside of Mack Z... like the identity you gave her? Regardless Abby's insults and Maddie comparisons start to impact Mackenzie's performance during rehearsal. Meanwhile JoJo gets her own solo and the group gets a Spice Girls tribute.
Over at Candy Apples Cathy hasn't taken her recent loss to Abby very well and decides to assemble her best dancers, because this week the competition is in Ohio and Cathy is not about to let Abby beat her on her own turf. Cathy is so excited about her line-up she can't help but mock the ALDC girls, putting down Nia and dismissing JoJo as a nobody with no following (lol). But will Cathy be able to wrangle her moms together when it turns out one of the m is secretly talking to Abby?

"Stop it right now! Please why didn't we see that on TV!? I want the footage, show me now! I want a Candy Apples spin-off right now!" Well if there's one thing Christi and Dr. Intern Matt would like you to know, it's that we've been robbed of a Candy Apples show that would have been as entertaining as Dance Moms if there was any justice in this world. Oh yes, Dr. Intern Matt has returned! Kelly is out scrambling to wedding prep this week and we've made a house call to the doctor. And you needed any indication how much Bitch #1 and Temu Bitch #2 get along, this two hours only covers half of "Abby's Trash, Cathy's Treasure"!
Cathy is back with a full vengeance and recruits (better read of course as Production forced her to recruit) all bunch of girls and moms that Abby turned away during her search for new ALDC members. The only problem of course is it's yet another Candy Apples group that's been roughly assembled together, haven't danced with one another before and therefore are un-prepared to go up against the ALDC, and are destined to take second anyway so why should Cathy even bother. The new moms don't take too kindly to the situation, but hey they're on TV so they'll stick it out while they can! But when the Candy Apples catch wind of how many dances the ALDC will be running at their next competition, they begin to but heads over why they aren't offered that same options to compete (again it's because you're designed to lose).
Meanwhile the ALDC does have quite a lot of dances in the pipeline. Aside from the group dance (which is based on the Clue board game so strap in for some prime Christi geeking out content), the girls are offered three duets! Kalani and Maddie are poised as the obvious powerhouse team, Nia and Mackenzie are paired to give them a shot at collective redemption in Abby's eyes or something, and finally JoJo and Kendall are paired together for a Freaky…

"This was a very franken-bit heavy episode. There were numerous times where I knew Abby did not say that." As Christi notes here there was clearly a lot of editing behind the scenes on this episode, but once you hear some of what Abby had to say in the show notes you won't be too shocked why that is. On Season 5's "Nia's Last Chance", Abby starts to take things too far in her treatment of the girls (shock) and as the title suggests no one is getting the worse end of that stick than Nia.
After getting a win over Cathy the week prior, Abby is in a better than average mood at Pyramid and puts the whole team on the same spot for their hard work... except Maddie who still gets her pre-requisite spot at the top. Though not everyone gets off easy as Abby has the girls critique JoJo as some sort of hazing ritual to finally be accepted onto the team. JoJo fortunately takes it better than expected, but it's hard not to feel like a harbinger of what's to come.
Turning their attention to the upcoming competition in Philadelphia, the moms ask Abby if she can give the girls some more contemporary material to work with, feeling that she's not quite yet lived up to her promise of giving them more challenging choreography to better prepare them for the professional world. Abby responds in kind by giving the team clearly the same lyrical material they're used to, just calling it something else. They'd worry about this more if there clearly wasn't something more pressing to deal with, like Abby's continued obsession with trying to put Holly and Nia in their place for their crime on doing the right thing. Nia is given a solo but is warned she won't be getting anymore if she fails to place.

"The field notes for Candy Apples are unhinged. If you guys have never read the field notes for this episode then buckle up. It is possibly equal or crazier than some of our craziest stuff that has gone on. I don not know why they did not show any of this." And Christi isn't downplaying that either. Off screen an entire war was waged between Lucas' mom Bridget and Cathy, which left our Bitches floored by the sheer lunacy of the situation. While you got a taste of it in the episode proper, there's so much more name calling and subterfuge that it's honestly a little hard to keep track of!
This week the ALDC and Candy Apples will pair off again at Sheer Talent in New Jersey... which of course since Abby has a stake in that competition it seems rather unlikely out the gate the Apples will stand a chance. Cathy is aware of this and enlists Erin Babbs to choreograph for the Candy Apples, hoping it'll not only produce great results but also annoy Abby in the process since she lost to Babbs a little over a month prior. It certainly annoys Abby, but it's going to take Cathy busting out a megaphone to really get her blood boiling (and Production is only too eager to oblige).

"Let's get into the episode so we can bitch a lot! Yay, everyone wants to hear us bitch!" It's true, we can't get enough of it! And on Season 5's "The Great Divide" it turns out the other moms couldn't get enough of it either. With the ALDC back in Pittsburgh it doesn't take long for things to get heated as the fallout from the pretty disastrous trip to LA begin to pick apart what little group dynamic there was.
Jill is worried about how she's being perceived for siding with Abby during the MattyB shoot. While she did initially support Holly, Jill knows if she crosses Abby it'll only lead to Kendall getting retaliated against and sees her pivot to Team Abby as a natural choice. Of course that doesn't sit right with Holly, who feels not only betrayed but believes Jill and Melissa's kowtowing to Abby sets a bad example for the girls and dooms only Nia to failure when there would have been strength in numbers. But Holly decides it's time she rethink how she views her friendships with the moms, in order to at the very least avoid future heartbreak. This in turn only makes Jill more frustrated with the situation.
Abby is more concerned with the upcoming competition in New Jersey, which starts their teen division at age 12. This would mean the ALDC would have to compete against older dancers, and Abby doesn't think her girls stand a chance. In fact she makes clear that once one of her dancers enters the teen division, she no longer sees them as her student. Despite being an embarrassing admission of guilt in regards to her skillset ,the only person who'll suffer for it is Kalani who now has to sit out the group dance in order for the team to compete in the Junior category. Her consolation prize however is a solo with actually interesting and fresh choreography. Unfortunately Abby doesn't so easily forget when she feels wronged, and Nia in turn is presented with a very stale solo …

"You and I are white trash because we say the F-word, but Kira is better than that...she has a criminal record but whatever. She just said the F-word 10 times!" Well fortunately for our lovely Bitches, Kira is in the hot seat on the second half of "Wild Wild West Coast Pt 2." After a couple weeks of threats, Tracey is finally delivering on her promise to oust Kira from the ALDC by exposing her past legal troubles, but will it be enough to actually secure Sarah R a more permanent spot on the team over Kalani?
As the ALDC make their final LA hurrah at Starbound they run into a bit of a problem, their dances just aren't it! Between tired choreography and some out of date references, its hard to imagine any of the dances making a strong impression compared to the more intense LA dancers in attendance. Worst of all is the bizarre choice to paint JoJo and Mackenzie in black and white for their I Love Lucy homage, managing to make the two look more like corpses than Lucy and Ethel. To add insult to injury their music shuts off mid-performance... so is that just an intentional sabotage at this point? How did it keep happening!?
But while the girls are struggling to make some noise on stage, the moms certainly are making noise behind the scenes. Abby threatened that not all the girls would be returning to Pittsburgh with the ALDC, and Tracey decides the best way to make her case is by taking out the competition. She begins to hurl insults and accusations at Kira, bringing up not only the fact she'd been charged with fraud for running an eBay scheme, but also claims she was arrested for credit card fraud! Shouting of course ensues. But honestly? Abby still seems more upset over Holly's perceived betrayal from a few days prior, and technically the MattyB incident is still on the horizon because that stuff all goes down AFTER the competition.
