The Life of Niphon contains one important nugget of historical information, in its report of an Ottoman attach on Athos, in 1372 or 1373, that was thwarted decisively by a Venetian flotilla (Chapter 18). The treat of Turkish piracy is a relatively persistent theme in this Life, more so than Maximos, but otherwise the narrative is entirely focused on the holy man's relatively mundane interactions with the largely anonymous members of the extremely local and enclosed Athonite world that immediately surrounded him. Life of Euthymios the Younger written by his disciple Basil, who later became a bishop near Thessalonike.
Euthymios, who became a hermit on Athos in the mid-ninth century, exemplifies the type of Byzantine monk who embraced a range of monastic experience during the course of his career and was frequently on the move: after a brief period of marriage, he took monastic vows at a cenobitic monastery on Mount Olympos in Bithynia, then moved to Athos where he lived as a hermit, spent some time on a pillar in Thessalonike as a stylite, founded a double monastery (men's & women's) at Peristerai on Mount Chortiates, and at the end of his life moved to a solitary cave on an island. He was one of the pioneers on the Holy Mountain, where he had several extended periods of residence and tried to bring some organization and more formal liturgical services to the scattered hermits who were living there before the foundation of cenobitic monasteries. Among the noteworthy features of his life is a vivid description of the three years he spent as a recluse in an Athonite cave, subsisting on foraged plants, his clothes reduced to ragged threads, at the mercy of the elements, his body ravaged by vermin. Also useful and important is Basil's detailed account of the foundation of the monastery of Saint Andrew at Peristerai, in which he was supported by generous donations from the local population. The church of the holy monastery still stands today.

Saint Porphyrios, a Greek hieromonk who died in 1991, stands in the long tradition of charismatic spiritual guides in the Orthodox Church which continues from the apostolic age down to figures such as Saint Seraphim of Sarov and Staretz Silouan in modern times. In this book he tells the story of his life and, in simple, deeply reflected and profoundly wise words, he expounds the Christian faith for today.
The vibrant personality of Saint Porphyrios at all times shines through his words with great transparency and charm. In his introduction to the Greek edition Bishop Irenaeus of Chania writes: 'The words of blessed Elder Porphyrios are the words of a holy Father, of a man with the gift of clear sight, who was ever retiring, humble, simple and ardent and whose life was a true and authentic witness to Christ, to His truth and to His joy. Through his presence, love, prayer, counsel and guidance he supported an untold number of people in the difficult hours of illness, mourning, pain, loss of faith and death. He is a god-bearing Father of our days, a true priest and teacher who in his ascetic way fell in love with Christ and faithfully served his fellow man.'
This book was compiled after Saint Porphyrios's death from an archive of notes and cassette recordings of his reminiscences, conversations and words of guidance, and was first published in Greek in 2003. Since its publication in English in 2005 it has been reprinted five times.

А son of а wealthy government official, St. Nephon was sent from Alexandria to Constantinople to further his studies. Having succumbed to the temptations of the great metropolis, he then pleased God with а life of deep repentance, ascetic struggles, watchfulness, and prayer. His fiery repentance cleansed his heart and he became а vessel of the Holy Spirit. He was then ordained bishop of the Church of Constantiana in Cyprus, where he distinguished himself as а shepherd of souls.
His life was generally unknown as it was only recorded in ancient Byzantine manuscripts treasured in the monasteries of the Holy Mountain Athos. This powerful memoir tells the story of a Greek youth who, out of a desire to know the truth empirically, began to experiment in yoga, hypnotism, and various occult techniques. Eventually drawn back to the Faith of his forefathers—Orthodox Christianity—he visited the ancient monastic republic of Mount Athos in his native Greece, where he was brought to a knowledge of the Truth of Jesus Christ by the saintly Elder Paisios (1924–1994). Nevertheless, believing he had only found “part of the truth” on the Holy Mountain, he chose to give the “same opportunity” to Hindu yogis that he had given to Elder Paisios and other Orthodox monks. Thus, at the age of twenty-five, he embarked on a trip to India, where he undertook his search in the ashrams of three famous gurus, one of whom was worshipped as a god. His experiences in India, along with his subsequent encounters with Elder Paisios on Mount Athos, are recounted in the present book in vivid detail.
Popular in Greece since its first publication there in 2001, The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios is a page-turning narrative of both outward adventures and inward struggles. In the noetic firmament of our Church, many brilliant starts (in other words, familiar saints), belong to the ranks of the laity. Aside from the martyrs and the neomartyrs, the majority of whom were lay people, there are also many lay saints.
Hence, sanctity is not the exclusive privilege of monks and priests but it is, rather, possible for every Christian who has correct Faith, repentance and a mindset to struggle.
In this collection, we present biographies of people who lived in various parts of Greece and other countries, and from various times, the Turkish occupation down to today. They were of different ages, races and states (clergymen or laypeople, family men or pay monastics). They each had their character and their personal struggle, but they also had some common characteristics between them: strong faith and great love for Christ.
Today, especially we have need of such bright examples. Now that another type of person is being formulated, a selfish and egocentric one, the showcasing and imitation of these graceful souls will help strengthen out lay ascetic tradition. By living it we may return to our original beauty, as we were first created, and re-depict the true image of man, which unfortunately, is buried in the passions and justifications of our contemporary fleshly people. "The time has come when everything will be humbled... they will be humbled so they can be crucified, to be resurrected and glorified again in Orthodox manner in all the earth. Since we don't have an "ethnic or national" God, but the Trinitarian God, the God of the entire world, Who wants the apostolic faith of the Orthodox to try the faith or lack thereof of all of us -leaders and populace- in our days. Because Christ needs His own people now, to create "the new crew of His ship", as St Porphyrios the Kafsokalyvia used to say. What is the ship of Christ? It's the Orthodox Church. That is the ship of Christ. And Christ has decided to clear the crew of His ship, which is not only you simple Christians, but the priests, the bishops, the patriarchs, and the civil authorities. Now we will all take exams. Let us, with the Holy Spirit -the Spirit of Truth- struggle to cleanse ourselves through repentance, to pass from the unnatural to the natural, and to reach the supernatural, which our Orthodox Church wants to give us -and not only to us but to every well-intentioned person, European or not. Because the one and only truth of the Orthodox faith is that which frees man from sin, from deception, from death, and from the devil... And because we love the man but not the sin, we love Europe more than people realize! Freedom from sin and the atheism of Europe will help the whole world; and this will come through the brightness of Orthodoxy which will come after the events -the painful and pedagogical events- that we're living through and will live through."

The Life was written more than thirty years after Symeon’s death by his disciple and apologist the theologian Niketas Stethatos, who also edited all of Symeon’s spiritual writings. An unusually valuable piece of Byzantine hagiography, it not only presents compelling descriptions of Symeon’s visions, mystical inspiration, and role as a monastic founder, but also provides vivid glimpses into the often bitter and unpleasantly conflicted politics of monasticism and the construction of sanctity and orthodoxy at the zenith of the medieval Byzantine Empire. Although the many volumes of Symeon’s spiritual writings are now readily available in English, the present translation makes the Life accessible to English readers for the first time. It is based on an authoritative edition of the Greek.
