258: Beyond the Horizon: A Conversation with Heesen Yachts
17 juni 2025 · 42 min
Heesen Yachts CEO Niels Vaasen and US sales director Thom Conboy share candid stories and behind-the-scenes insights — from the legendary founder Frans Heesen to the company’s exciting new Dutch shareholder. Lees meer
Thom vividly recalls the electric moment 30 years ago when the 35-meter Tropic Sea (now Sea Axis) stole the spotlight at Bahia Mar — a defining memory for Frans, who felt “like King Kong.” That iconic yacht is still cruising today, part of Heesen’s ever-growing and evolving fleet.
From navigating the sales process (“sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs”) to celebrating with chocolate cake at launches, they dive into how the company has evolved — from sleek interiors to groundbreaking construction. They touch on Ultra G, one of the fastest large yachts in recent history, and why today’s clients increasingly favour steel builds over speed, valuing time as their ultimate luxury.

249: How to build the world's biggest centre console
30 april 2025 · 36 min
Jeff Summers, senior designer for Scout Boats in South Carolina, walks us through the story of building the American boat builder’s flagship, the LXS 670 670, a $6.8 million, five-outboard powered, 60mph, 20.35 metre yacht, created with superyacht designers Harrison Eidsgaard. Summers, a graduate of a car design school, interned with Heesen Yachts where he got an understanding for superyacht design and from there, looked for a place with a beach and palm trees and landed his job with Scout, an ambitious and innovative builder that has made a giant splash with its newest launch, in 2016. Debuting this year at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, the first LXS 670, built with carbon fibre and fibreglass, has a sporty design, but lots of interior room - a versatile, fast platform that can do all kinds of things, and could be a support vessel for a larger yacht with a range of about 400 nautical miles with 1,500 gallons of fuel. 241: Inside the notorious charter yacht King Benji with owner Josh Golder
24 januari 2025 · 46 min
Josh Golder, the owner of yacht King Benji, is a disruptor. He doesn’t call himself that but his unusual approach to charter marketing is raising eyebrows. He named King Benji, a 47 metre custom yacht he commissioned as his largest boat to date, after his dog, and from there built a brand and charter program. From being imaged as his personal home on the water, King Benji has become one of the best-known and most recognisable yachts on the charter market today thanks in no small part to its social media presence. And this digital marketing expert who can’t sit still has thrown the windows open and let everyone in. US BOAT editor Cecile Gauert speaks with him about his marketing approach, from flying a banner over a boat show to invite everyone to visit, to creating a very public presence online (and managing that reputation should something go wrong) to what may come next for the King Benji brand.
