The People Under The Stairs (1991)
31 oktober 2026 · 56 min
It's the Spooktacular 2026 finale! Gene and Big D close out horror season with Wes Craven's 1991 social horror comedy The People Under the Stairs, commissioned by listener Chris H (aka Trucker Seaman). A young boy breaks into his landlords' house and discovers a dark secret in the walls — but is this movie a horror film, a kids adventure, a social satire, or an unholy mix of all three? Lees meer
Big D had never seen it. Gene hadn't watched it since childhood, when it scared the hell out of him on VHS. Together they unpack whether Craven's ambitious mashup of gentrification commentary, Goonies-style treasure hunting, and R-rated gore holds up — or collapses under its own weight.
In this episode:
Did Tarantino steal the gimp suit scene for Pulp Fiction? Gene makes the case that Ving Rhames' casting traces directly back to this film
Big D argues the entire movie was written backwards — the ending came first, and everything else was engineered to service it
Gene reveals The People Under the Stairs is basically The Goonies: "You don't need the Fratellis, you don't need the body in the freezer, you don't need Sloth"
The R-rating debate: should a movie starring a kid looking for gold coins really feature skinned bodies and severed hands?
"Fuck Prince" — the first movie where Gene actively rooted for the dog to die
A wild tangent on War Hound, Palmer Luckey's genetically engineered military dogs
The Do the Right Thing song hidden in the credits — and what it means
Listener email from George, a 17-year-old social justice warrior who's been listening since age 14, with a thoughtful take on our Sleepaway Camp episode and whether it's a pro-trans film

Sleepaway Camp (1983)
21 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 2 min
When listener John S. commissioned the 1983 cult slasher Sleepaway Camp, Big D had zero expectations. Gene was cautiously optimistic after two disappointing summer camp films. Neither was prepared for what they got. Lees meer
What starts as Meatballs with murder — beehives, boilings, and drownings — escalates into something far darker, culminating in one of cinema's most shocking twist endings. Gene calls it his favorite slasher finale of all time. Big D says it's up there with The Terminator, Empire Strikes Back, and Back to the Future Part II.
In this episode:
How Sleepaway Camp earned its 82% Rotten Tomatoes score despite being dismissed as a Friday the 13th knockoff
The legendary practical effects of Ed French (Terminator 2, Star Trek, Buffy) — going way harder than the budget demanded
Robert Earl Jones (James Earl Jones' father!) as the camp cook who looks the other way
The most authentic New York swearing since your last family gathering
A thoughtful debate on whether the film's famous ending is transphobic or a tragic story of a child failed by the adults around him
Why both hosts agree: watch this movie before you listen to this episode. The twist is that good.
Sleepaway Camp is available free on multiple streaming platforms including Plex. Go watch it first — seriously — then come back and join the conversation.

The Evil Dead II (1987)
15 oktober 2026 · 59 min
When a filmmaker gets a second chance at the same idea and decides to just fucking lose his mind, you get Evil Dead 2. Gene and Big D continue their Shat Spooktacular Halloween celebration with Sam Raimi's 1987 horror-comedy sequel — the film that turned Ash Williams into a legend and gave us the one word that defines an entire franchise: "Groovy." Lees meer
Commissioned by Spooktacular junkie John, this episode digs into the remake-vs-sequel debate, Bruce Campbell's transformation from likable lead to chainsaw-handed icon, a shell-company distribution workaround to dodge an X rating, and the stop-motion skeletons that still divide the hosts. Gene compares the movie to mopeds — not the best-made, not the scariest, not the funniest, but more fun than better movies. Dick's turning point? When Henrietta's eyeball shoots across the room and lands in her daughter's mouth. Perfect. No notes.

The Evil Dead (1981)
7 oktober 2026 · 1 uur
This week on Shat the Movies, we're heading into the woods with The Evil Dead (1981), where five friends discover that renting an isolated cabin is apparently the fastest route to demonic possession. Gene and Big D break down Bruce Campbell's early Ash, Sam Raimi's inventive camera work, buckets of blood, questionable decision-making, and special effects held together with imagination and whatever they could afford. Is this low-budget horror landmark still genuinely scary, or has forty years of imitation turned it into something closer to a comedy? Tune in and find out. Lees meer
Full movie info below:
The Evil Dead (1981) is a supernatural horror film written and directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker, and Theresa Tilly. The film follows five college students whose trip to a remote Tennessee cabin goes horribly wrong after they discover a mysterious book and a recording that unleashes demonic forces. Made on a tiny independent budget, The Evil Dead became a cult horror hit and launched the careers of Raimi and Campbell, eventually spawning sequels, a remake, television series, video games, and one of horror's most recognizable franchises.Subscribe Now

Street Trash (1987)
2 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 7 min
The 10th Annual Shat Spooktacular kicks off with a bang. People are melting. A penis is flying through the air. And somebody brought a woodwind. Lees meer
Commissioner John kicks off our first-ever full month of horror by taking us back to 1987 for Street Trash, the cult splatter comedy where a Brooklyn liquor store sells poisoned Tenafly Viper to the local homeless population and things go exactly as wrong as you'd expect. With a budget of roughly $100,000, this movie had no stars, no money, and no business being as memorable as it is — and yet here we are, still talking about it 39 years later.
Big D and Gene break down the melt-movie subgenre, the infamous junkyard dong toss set to Looney Tunes clown music, a homeless man shoving raw chicken down his pants, and the discovery that Martin Scorsese found Tony Darrow in this very film. Plus: Big D identifies a BB gun from his childhood, makes a case that B-movie filmmakers were in it for the fetishes, and asks the question nobody wanted answered — is an oboe enough to make a sexual assault scene feel "playful"?
We also hear from the Shat Gang: Fernando calls in with the alternative ending to Born in East LA, and Chris from Chicago corrects Big D on the Buddy Revell vs. Matt Dillon debate. Dick folds immediately.

Licence to Kill (1989)
28 september 2026 · 1 uur 13 min
This week on Shat the Movies, we're going rogue with Licence to Kill (1989), the Bond movie where 007 forgets about saving the world and makes things very personal. Timothy Dalton's Bond quits MI6 and goes after drug lord Franz Sanchez, giving us revenge, exploding tankers, questionable undercover decisions, and one seriously pissed off James Bond. Gene and Big D break down Dalton's darker take on the character and whether this stripped down Bond adventure was ahead of its time. Does Licence to Kill deserve another look, or was this just too much Bond for 1989? Tune in and find out. Lees meer
Full movie info below:
Licence to Kill (1989) is a James Bond film directed by John Glen and stars Timothy Dalton, Carey Lowell, Robert Davi, Talisa Soto, Anthony Zerbe, and a young Benicio del Toro. After drug lord Franz Sanchez brutally attacks Felix Leiter, Bond ignores orders and sets out for revenge, infiltrating Sanchez's organization from within. The film marked Dalton's second and final appearance as James Bond and took the series in a darker, more violent direction years before the franchise would revisit a similar approach with Daniel Craig.Subscribe Now

Dragonheart (1996)
23 september 2026 · 1 uur 2 min
Commissioned by Michael S. from the UK, "Dragonheart" promised swordplay, knights and old codes. What it delivered was a Funko Pop-headed CGI dragon, Dennis Quaid auditioning for an Oscar that was never coming, and a plot hole so big you could fly a wyvern through it. Lees meer
Gene and Big D break down the visual effects that aged like milk, the casting choices that could have saved the film (Schwarzenegger?!), the one question the movie never bothers to answer, and why Dennis Quaid delivers "Honor won't feed my belly, nor shoe my horse" like he's filming Braveheart.
Plus: listener emails from a 25-year veteran teacher who vindicates our Mr. Holland's Opus take, and a new listener who recently found the pod and has been binging from episode one.

Tuff Turf (1985)
17 september 2026 · 59 min
We're going back to 1985 for the teen action drama Tuff Turf—starring James Spader, Robert Downey Jr., and Kim Richards. What starts as a goofy '80s teen comedy about a new kid who falls for the wrong girl spirals into a bloodbath with switchblades, fire axes, and rottweilers. It's Grease meets The Karate Kid meets Friday the 13th, and nobody on set seemed to notice. Lees meer
Gene calls it "one of the dumbest stories ever seen on screen" while Big D calls it "surprisingly enjoyable and wild."
Commissioner Heather adds to the mix with an emotional letter about what the podcast means to her during the hardest summer of her life. Big D pitches a horror movie version of The Karate Kid, and Dick's foster cats run the studio.

Kiss the Girls (1997)
12 september 2026 · 1 uur 2 min
This week on Shat the Movies, we're hunting a serial killer with Kiss the Girls (1997), the thriller that introduced Morgan Freeman as detective and psychologist Alex Cross. Gene and Big D break down Freeman's effortless authority, Ashley Judd fighting back, the creepy Casanova mystery, and a plot packed with enough twists and suspicious dudes to keep everyone guessing. Does this late 90s serial killer thriller still deliver, or was Hannibal Lecter already casting too big a shadow? Tune in and find out. Lees meer
Shat on Entertainment
Kiss the Girls (1997) is a psychological thriller directed by Gary Fleder and stars Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Cary Elwes, and Tony Goldwyn. Based on James Patterson's novel, the film follows forensic psychologist Alex Cross as he searches for his kidnapped niece and becomes involved in the hunt for a serial kidnapper known as Casanova. His investigation leads him to Kate McTiernan, a woman who escaped captivity and may be the best chance of finding the other missing women. The film was the first big screen appearance of Alex Cross, with Freeman returning to the role in Along Came a Spider. -
Born In East L.A. (1987)
4 september 2026 · 52 min
Cheech Marin steps out from Tommy Chong's shadow for his directorial debut, and Gene and Big D dig into whether this immigration comedy still holds up 40 years later. Lees meer
The Shat Crew breaks down the film's boldest gamble — leaving huge chunks of dialogue untranslated — plus the sight gags that still kill, the sketches that don't, and why Rudy's romance with Dolores might be the real heart of the movie.
The conversation goes deeper than the jokes: workplace immigration raids in the '80s, the real cases (and real consequences) behind the comedy, and why Cheech says this movie now plays more like a documentary. Also covered: the good, the weird, and the completely bananas ending — featuring a Neil Diamond needle-drop and a border-storming finale nobody saw coming.
This week's commissioner, Fernando Z., waited almost two years for this review — and it was worth it.

Dave (1993)
30 augustus 2026 · 58 min
This week on Shat the Movies, we're heading to the White House with Dave (1993), where an ordinary guy who looks exactly like the president suddenly finds himself running the country. Gene and Big D break down Kevin Kline's double duty, the surprisingly sweet romance with Sigourney Weaver, and a political fantasy built around the idea that maybe common sense could actually fix Washington. Is Dave still a charming political comedy, or does its optimism feel completely insane today? Tune in and find out. Lees meer
Full movie info below:

This week on Shat the Movies, we're going back to school with Mr. Holland's Opus (1995), the story of a musician who takes a teaching job while dreaming of something bigger. Gene and Big D break down Richard Dreyfuss' decades in the classroom, the students he inspires, the family he sometimes neglects, and whether Mr. Holland is actually the inspirational teacher we remember him being. The Power Of One (1995)
9 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 2 min
This week, Gene and Big D review The Power of One (1992), the historical drama directed by John G. Avildsen (Rocky) and starring Stephen Dorff, Morgan Freeman, John Gielgud, and a very young, very hateable Daniel Craig — in his feature film debut. Lees meer
Set in apartheid-era South Africa, the film follows Peter "PK" Keith, an Anglo boy navigating boarding school brutality, a German expat mentor, a prison boxing coach, and the weight of becoming a symbol for an oppressed people. It's ambitious, it's beautiful, and it completely bombed at the box office.
This episode, the guys debate:
Whether PK is the hero — or actually the most dangerous man in South Africa
Why the film's Black characters are almost impossibly patient with the white kid saving them
The most disturbing scene in any PG-13 movie (and it's not the violence)
Stephen Dorff: criminally underrated, or just lucky here?
What PK should have done instead of turning down Oxford?
Plus: Dick fosters five-week-old kittens named Band Camp and Space Camp. Gene drunkenly watched the FIFA World Cup final before recording. Rob's commissioner letter about his late mum brings the whole episode to a halt.
This commission comes courtesy of Rob H. (UK), part of his upcoming block of commissions. Rob's letter — including his childhood trip to Zimbabwe, his memories of Victoria Falls, and a Zulu phrase he made Gene Google live on mic — is one of the best we've received in 500 episodes.

Cars (2006)

It's episode 503 and commissioner Shane — fantasy baseball champion, Jump Rope for Heart hero, and listener since episode four — finally gets his pick: Pixar's 2006 animated comedy Cars. Lees meer
Dick watched it with his daughter, Emma. Gene watched it for the first time, still unclear why so many Walmart shoppers wear Lightning McQueen Crocs.
What follows is a full breakdown of the film — the stunning opening race sequence, the surprisingly rich world-building, the Route 66 economic collapse that hit harder than expected, and the central flaw neither host could ignore: Lightning McQueen is the least interesting car in his own movie.
Also on the docket:
Did Pixar accidentally make a pro-walkable-city film?
Can Cars die of natural causes? What happened to Stanley?
Mötley Crüe was offered a song in this movie. They said no. Disney went with Rascal Flatts. We're still angry.
The Escalade vs. Navigator distinction that you will not hear anywhere else.
Dick's Pixar top 10, Gene's complicated feelings about Up, and a debate on whether WALL-E is a zero-wipe perfect film.

The Quest (1996)

Gene and Dick hit a milestone — episode 501 — and they're celebrating by going back to the '90s with Jean-Claude Van Damme's passion project, The Quest. Lees meer
Commissioned by Steven M. as part of the Month of Steven, this 1996 martial arts adventure finds Van Damme not just starring but directing — and the results are... surprisingly ambitious.
In this episode:
Is The Quest Bloodsport in 1925, or Van Damme's Indiana Jones? Gene and Dick can't agree.
Roger Moore shows up and completely steals the movie. Dick makes a controversial case that he may have been a better Bond than Connery.
The tournament fighters are real martial artists — and it makes all the difference.
Van Damme is obsessed with his legs. His eyes. And apparently, silk underwear.
The orphans were definitely dead by the third act. We ran the timeline.
What did the note say? This is the question that may never be answered.
Also in this episode: a listener reports that someone trained AI on Big D's voice to sell knives on TikTok, the guys lock in two months of Spooktacular horror films, Beastmaster gets commissioned, and next week brings a summer camp classic from 1979.

Airborne (1993)

Episode 500 is here! To celebrate this milestone, the Shat Crew commemorated the occasion with a limited-edition Episode 500 Mission Patch, created as a special thank-you to listeners who helped us reach 500 movies. Get yours at www.shatpod.com/movies/patch while supplies last. Lees meer
For the 500th episode of Shat The Movies, Gene and Big D lace up their inline skates and head to Cincinnati for Airborne, the 1993 coming-of-age comedy that somehow blends fish-out-of-water humor, street hockey, aggressive inline skating and a roster of future stars.
Starring Shane McDermott alongside a young Seth Green and Jack Black, Airborne is peak '90s comfort food—equal parts sports movie, teen comedy and time capsule.
The guys revisit the film's unforgettable Devil's Backbone race and debate whether Mitchell Goosen is the coolest kid ever dropped into the Midwest or just the luckiest. Along the way, they discuss rollerblading's brief moment as the future of extreme sports and why Airborne has become one of the great forgotten cult classics of the decade.
Is Airborne an overlooked '90s gem that deserves to roll alongside the best sports comedies of its era, or is it simply nostalgia doing all the heavy lifting? Join us as we celebrate 500 episodes and an incredible community of listeners who've been along for the ride.
Plot Summary:
After moving from sunny California to Cincinnati, teenager Mitchell Goosen struggles to fit in at his new high school until he befriends a group of Rollerbladers and finds himself caught in a rivalry that can only be settled with an epic downhill race through the city's steepest streets.

Diggstown (1992)

James Woods is a con man you desperately want to punch, Louis Gossett Jr. fights 10 men at 48 years old, and Gene somehow thought this was a New Jack City knockoff. This week, Steven M. commissions the 1992 sports comedy con film Diggstown, and we ask the question: Is it actually clever, or does everybody in the room just think they are? Lees meer

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

Gene and Big D break down the comedy, the culture clash, and whether the movie's mix of humor, music, and Vietnam drama still works today. Is it a comedy, a drama, or just a Robin Williams showcase? Tune in and find out. Lees meer

Heavyweights (1995)
22 juni 2026 · 59 min
This week, Gene and Big D tackle a commission with a personal touch: Zach — a top 0.5% Shat the Movies listener and fitness industry pro — was gifted a review of the 1995 Disney comedy Heavyweights. Written by Judd Apatow and Steven Brill, the film follows a group of boys at Camp Hope who rebel against the unhinged fitness entrepreneur Tony Perkis Jr. (Ben Stiller) after he takes over their beloved fat camp. Lees meer
Gene and Big D dig into what made Heavyweights a touchstone for chubby '90s kids — and why it bombed at the box office. Along the way, they debate whether Ben Stiller has ever done anything other than the same one character, what Disney could never get away with releasing today, the lost art of summer camp independence, and why the movie's ending completely undercuts its message.
They also celebrate an exciting milestone: a limited-edition Shat the Movies 500th episode mission patch, made in America by a veteran-owned company in Tennessee. Only 50 available.

The Negotiator (1998)
29 mei 2026 · 1 uur 9 min
This week, Shat The Movies heads to Chicago for The Negotiator, the 1998 hostage thriller that asks a simple question: What happens when the best hostage negotiator in the city takes hostages of his own? Lees meer
Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey in a battle of wits, the film turns a police corruption investigation into a tense, talk-heavy showdown filled with double-crosses, suspicious cops, and enough flashbangs to outfit a small army.
Gene and Big D revisit a late-'90s thriller that feels like a mashup of Die Hard, The Fugitive, and a Chicago tourism commercial gone horribly wrong. The guys debate whether Danny Roman's plan is brilliant or completely insane, marvel at the film's stacked supporting cast, and discuss why every Chicago movie seems to feature cops making catastrophically bad decisions.
Along the way, they break down David Morse's hard-nosed performance, the film's escalating paranoia, and the rare action movie that wins battles with conversation instead of gunfire.
Is The Negotiator an underrated thriller from the golden age of adult action movies, or a wildly implausible conspiracy held together by charisma, shouting, and Samuel L. Jackson's ability to dominate every room he's in?
Full movie info below
When a respected Chicago police hostage negotiator is framed for corruption and murder, he seizes a government office and takes hostages in a desperate attempt to uncover the real conspiracy. With the city closing in, he turns to another elite negotiator to help expose the truth before time runs out.

Starring Rutger Hauer as the terrifying and impossibly calm John Ryder, the film follows a young traveler who makes the mistake of picking up a hitchhiker—and spends the rest of the movie trying to survive the consequences. Lees meer
Gene and Big D break down why Hauer's performance feels less like a human villain and more like an unstoppable force of nature, debate whether C. Thomas Howell's Jim is incredibly unlucky or catastrophically stupid, and revisit the movie's bleak, sweaty atmosphere that makes every gas station and desert highway feel hostile. Along the way, the guys discuss the film's infamous truck sequence, the bizarrely useless police force, and why this movie permanently convinced an entire generation never to pick up hitchhikers.

Rapid Fire (1992)
16 mei 2026 · 57 min
This week, Shat The Movies steps into the crossfire with Rapid Fire, the 1992 action thriller that gave Brandon Lee his best showcase as a leading man. Commissioned by listener Rob H., this early-'90s cult favorite blends Chicago mobsters, Chinese Triads, and some of the most inventive martial arts choreography of the decade. Listener Rob calls it "an absolute belter" and wonders how big Brandon Lee might have become had tragedy not cut his career short. Lees meer
Gene and Big D revisit Lee's undeniable screen presence, Powers Boothe's mustache-free oddness, and a string of brilliantly staged fight scenes that turn restaurant pillars, cutlery drawers, and even laundry racks into weapons. Along the way, they debate whether Rapid Fire is a gritty action gem, a glorified Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie without the turtle suits, or simply the finest use of a clothing rail in cinematic history.
Is Rapid Fire the forgotten martial arts classic that proved Brandon Lee was destined for stardom—or just a formulaic early-'90s thriller elevated by charisma, choreography, and pure ass-kicking energy?

Tom Cruise stars as Jerry, a high-powered agent whose sudden moral awakening costs him everything except one loyal client, one overwhelmed single mom, and one very intense kid obsessed with the human head.
Gene and Big D revisit Cuba Gooding Jr.'s explosive Oscar-winning performance, debate whether Jerry is genuinely changing or just professionally spiraling, and unpack why this movie somehow works as a sports film, romance, workplace drama, and midlife crisis all at once. Along the way, the guys discuss Cruise's impossible charisma, Renée Zellweger's emotional heavy lifting, and whether "You complete me" is one of cinema's most romantic lines—or one of its biggest emotional red flags.

Rocky's strategy in the ring: embracing his limits, focusing on stamina, and going the distance, not necessarily winning.
Lessons from real-life boxing upsets that inspired the movie's underdog story.
How Rocky's persistence and goal-setting translate to everyday life challenges, including creative pursuits and personal growth.
Plus, we share some humor, sparring anecdotes, and reflections on why small victories can matter more than the championship.

They Live (1988)
21 maart 2026 · 1 uur 6 min
This week, Shat The Movies puts on the sunglasses and uncovers John Carpenter's They Live, the cult classic that turns Reagan-era paranoia into a full-blown alien conspiracy. Starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as a drifter who discovers the world is secretly controlled by skull-faced elites, this 1988 sci-fi satire pulls no punches—and barely bothers with subtlety. Lees meer
Gene and Big D dig into Carpenter's blunt-force messaging, Piper's surprisingly effective everyman performance, and the film's legendary alley fight that somehow goes on forever—and still works. Quick Change (1990)

Shat The Movies heads to New York City for Quick Change, the 1990 crime comedy starring Bill Murray as a master planner who pulls off the perfect bank robbery… only to discover escaping Manhattan is the real heist. Directed by Murray and Howard Franklin, the film pairs Murray's signature dry frustration with a city that seems determined to sabotage every step of the getaway. Lees meer

From the clown-mask bank robbery to wrong turns, broken taxis, suspicious cops, and Tony Shalhoub, Quick Change becomes less about the crime and more about the slow psychological breakdown of trying to leave town.
Is Quick Change an overlooked Bill Murray classic, or just a very specific kind of urban nightmare that only works if you've ever tried to get across Manhattan in a hurry?

Twins (1988)
28 februari 2026 · 1 uur 14 min
This week, Shat The Movies tackles one of the most bafflingly successful high-concept comedies of the '80s: Twins, the movie that asked, "What if Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito were genetically engineered brothers?" and somehow convinced the world to buy a ticket. Lees meer
Gene and Big D revisit Ivan Reitman's unlikely buddy comedy to examine Arnold playing against type as a naive, hyper-intelligent gentle giant, while DeVito leans hard into sleaze, scams, and short-man rage. The guys debate whether the fish-out-of-water humor still works, unpack the film's bizarre science experiment premise, and marvel at how much charm carries a plot that makes absolutely no sense.
From the stolen car hustle to the desert bonding trip and that wildly convenient third-act reunion, Twins swings big on heart—even when the genetics are pure fantasy.

Top Secret! (1984)
20 februari 2026 · 1 uur 8 min
This week, Shat The Movies heads behind the Iron Curtain—or at least a Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker version of it—with Top Secret!, the absurdist spy spoof that introduced the world to Val Kilmer as a legitimately charismatic movie star who could also sing, dance, and commit fully to absolute nonsense. Long before Top Gun or The Doors, Kilmer was playing it dead serious in a movie where cows wear boots and visual gags never stop firing. Lees meer
Gene and Big D break down how Top Secret! feels like the forgotten middle child between Airplane! and The Naked Gun, debate whether the joke density is impressive or exhausting, and marvel at Kilmer's willingness to anchor chaos with charm. Along the way, they revisit the underwater bar fight, backward bookstore scene, relentless wordplay, and why this movie rewards obsessive rewatching more than almost any comedy of its era.

Stakeout (1987)
12 februari 2026 · 1 uur 4 min
This week, Shat The Movies parks the surveillance van and cracks open Stakeout, the 1987 buddy-cop hit that proved Richard Dreyfuss could be both wildly neurotic and a believable romantic lead. Gene and Big D revisit this Reagan-era crowd-pleaser to figure out how a movie about police spying on a civilian somehow became a rom-com, a workplace comedy and an action-thriller all at once. Lees meer
The guys dig into Dreyfuss's escalating obsession, Emilio Estevez's mustachioed energy, and how the film casually treats stalking, harassment and undercover ethics as punchlines. They break down hot crooks, the very loose definition of "professional boundaries," and why Madeleine Stowe's character exists mostly to react to men behaving badly. Along the way, they debate whether Stakeout works because of its chemistry—or in spite of everything happening onscreen.
Is Stakeout a charming artifact from a time when movies trusted charisma over logic, or just proof that '80s law enforcement comedies lived in a completely different moral universe?

Shoot to Kill (1988)
6 februari 2026 · 1 uur 2 min

Gene and Big D break down Poitier's no-nonsense authority, Berenger's quietly unhinged menace, and Kirstie Alley's refreshingly capable romantic lead. Along the way, they discuss outdoorsy masculinity, Reagan-era law enforcement vibes, and why this movie works so well despite flying completely under the pop-culture radar.

Field of Dreams (1989)
30 januari 2026 · 1 uur 4 min
This week, Shat The Movies heads to rural Iowa for Field of Dreams, the baseball fantasy that turns whispered voices, cornfields and unresolved daddy issues into cinematic magic. This episode is especially meaningful as it marks the first episode edited by our first-ever intern, Elias, officially ushering in a new era for the show. If you build it… apparently Elias will cut it. Lees meer
Gene and Big D revisit Kevin Costner's earnest everyman performance, debate whether this movie is genuinely profound or expertly engineered emotional manipulation, and confront the fact that Field of Dreams hits very differently depending on how close you are to your dad—and your mortality. Along the way, they break down ghost ballplayers, inscrutable cosmic rules, and why this film dares you not to cry in the final five minutes.
Is Field of Dreams a timeless American fairy tale—or just a very well-lit guilt trip wrapped in a baseball movie? Either way, it's one for the books… and the interns.

The Hunted (1995)
24 januari 2026 · 1 uur 7 min
Shat The Movies unsheathes the katana and heads to modern-day Japan for The Hunted, a mid-'90s action oddity that asks a very important question: What if Christopher Lambert was a reluctant samurai caught in a centuries-old ninja blood feud? Lees meer
Released in 1995 and promptly forgotten, this movie blends corporate intrigue, mystical warrior clans, and neon-lit Tokyo alley fights into one very strange package.
Gene and Big D break down Lambert's perpetual confusion, Joan Chen's elegant menace, and the film's commitment to taking ancient honor codes extremely seriously—despite feeling like it was shot between episodes of Highlander. Along the way, they debate whether The Hunted is an underrated cult action flick or just a slick-looking B-movie that never quite finds its footing.
Behold The Hunted, a hidden gem of '90s action cinema and proof that not every movie needs ninjas, boardrooms and spiritual destiny all in the same script.

The Untouchables (1987)
16 januari 2026 · 1 uur 5 min
This week, Shat The Movies heads to Prohibition-era Chicago with Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, a glossy crime epic that somehow combines operatic violence, moral absolutism, and one of the most iconic staircases in movie history. Lees meer
Featuring Kevin Costner at his most upright, Sean Connery at his most Oscar-winning, and Robert De Niro going full scarface-with-a-bat, this film has long been considered a prestige gangster classic—but does it still earn its reputation?
Gene and Big D break down Ennio Morricone's unforgettable score, De Palma's shameless love of excess, and whether Costner's Eliot Ness is compelling or just aggressively boring. Along the way, they revisit Connery's scene-stealing mentor role, De Niro's cartoonishly menacing Al Capone, and the film's "history-as-vibes" approach to law enforcement.
Is The Untouchables a towering crime masterpiece—or just a stylish collection of unforgettable moments stitched together with slow-motion hero worship?

Contact (1997)
10 januari 2026 · 1 uur 7 min
This week, Shat The Movies looks to the stars with Contact, Robert Zemeckis's thoughtful, talky, and occasionally frustrating sci-fi drama about faith, science, and whether humanity is ready for the truth. Based on Carl Sagan's novel and anchored by a career-best performance from Jodie Foster, Contact dares to ask big questions—then spends two and a half hours arguing about who gets to answer them. Lees meer
Gene and Big D debate whether this is smart, adult science fiction or a preachy lecture disguised as a blockbuster. They dig into Matthew McConaughey's spiritual hot takes, the movie's suspicious politics, the weirdly hostile government oversight, and one of the most memorable fake-out climaxes of the '90s. Along the way, they ask the ultimate Shat question: is Contact profound—or just very impressed with itself?
Plot Summary
A driven scientist discovers an alien signal containing instructions to build a mysterious machine, forcing humanity to confront the conflict between science, faith, politics, and the possibility that we are not alone.

Mixed Nuts (1994)
26 december 2025 · 58 min
This Christmas, Shat The Movies takes a detour into one of the strangest holiday comedies ever made with Mixed Nuts, Nora Ephron's chaotic 1994 remake of the French farce Le Père Noël est une ordure. We're revisiting this deeply uncomfortable Christmas movie in honor of the late Rob Reiner, who helped define smart, character-driven comedies—even when they didn't always work. Lees meer
Gene and Big D unpack how a film with an absurdly stacked cast—Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, Adam Sandler, Juliette Lewis, and Liev Schreiber—somehow became a cult curiosity instead of a holiday classic. They debate whether Mixed Nuts was simply ahead of its time, fatally misjudged in tone, or doomed by trying to balance farce, mental health, and Christmas cheer in the same gift box.
Along the way, the guys reflect on why Mixed Nuts now plays less like a failed holiday romp and more like a bizarre time capsule of transitional Hollywood. Is this a Christmas movie worth reclaiming—or one best left buried under the tree?

Donnie Darko (2001)
22 december 2025 · 58 min
This week, Shat The Movies dives headfirst into early-2000s suburban dread with Donnie Darko, the cult classic that launched a thousand dorm-room debates and taught a generation to fear jet engines and men in bunny suits. Commissioned by listeners Wes and Fernando, this episode tackles Richard Kelly's time-bending, angst-soaked sci-fi drama that somehow feels even more relevant today. Lees meer
Gene and Big D unpack Jake Gyllenhaal's star-making performance, the film's iconic '80s soundtrack, and whether Donnie Darko is a brilliant meditation on fate and free will—or just an elaborate emo Rorschach test. Along the way, they debate self-help gurus, creepy motivational speakers, suburban hypocrisy, and why this movie hits differently depending on when you first saw it.
Is Donnie Darko a misunderstood masterpiece or a pretentious puzzle box that gets more credit than it deserves? Grab your Philosophy of Time Travel and find out.

Day of the Dead (1985)
10 december 2025 · 1 uur 3 min
This week on Shat the Movies, we're heading underground with Day of the Dead (1985), the grim and gory finale to George A. Romero's original zombie trilogy. As scientists and soldiers clash in a bunker full of tension (and entrails), we break down the film's bleak tone, standout effects, and the unforgettable performance of Bub the zombie. Gene and Big D ask: Is this a zombie masterpiece, or just a depressing mess with great gore?. Lees meer

Time Bandits (1981)
30 november 2025 · 1 uur
This week, Shat The Movies tumbles through the space-time continuum with Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits, a chaotic fantasy adventure filled with Monty Python humor, mischievous dwarves, and a cosmic battle between Good, Evil, and negligent parenting. Commissioned by listener Mark, this 1981 classic follows young Kevin as he's swept away by a crew of dimension-hopping bandits who've stolen a map of the universe and are using it to rob history blind—Napoleon, Robin Hood, and ancient kings all included. Lees meer
Gene and Big D debate whether the film is a brilliant kids' movie for adults or an unsettling fever dream wrapped in British absurdism. Along the way, they revisit the unforgettable Evil Genius, the Supreme Being's bureaucratic disappointment, and the ending that scarred an entire generation of children.
Is Time Bandits a masterpiece of imagination or just Gilliam letting chaos do the directing? Grab your map, avoid the pure concentrated evil, and find out.

Billy Madison (1995)
23 november 2025 · 58 min
This week, Shat The Movies goes back to school—literally—as we revisit Adam Sandler's breakout man-child classic, Billy Madison. Commissioned by Hot Sauce Steve, this 1995 comedy asks the eternal question: what if the heir to a hotel empire had to redo grades 1 through 12 because he's too dumb to inherit a business? Lees meer
Gene and Big D break down Sandler's early "shouting gibberish at adults" era, debate whether Billy is secretly sweet or just deeply concerning, and marvel at how many jokes in this movie would definitely not get greenlit today. The guys revisit iconic bits like the dodgeball massacre, the penguin, the academic decathlon, and Steve Buscemi's lipstick-fueled redemption arc.
Was Billy Madison actually funny, or were we all just 12 years old once? And more importantly, does shampoo really beat conditioner?
