  1. 1008: Brian Klaas | Embracing Uncertainty in a World of Flukes

    25 juni 2024 · 1 uur 21 min

    Afspelen
Unexpected moments can change the world. Brian Klaas, author of Fluke, reveals how embracing life's randomness can empower us to make a difference. Lees meer

What We Discuss with Brian Klaas:

Tiny actions or events can have massive downstream effects and consequences, as illustrated by historical examples like how a decades-old vacation spared Kyoto from nuclear bombing in WWII.

Our lives and human history are shaped by chaos theory and random flukes, such as the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs or chance evolutionary events that led to complex life.

Humans have cognitive biases that make us seek patterns and explanations, even when events are random. This can lead to superstitions, conspiracy theories, and a false sense of control.

Wealth and success are often more influenced by luck and arbitrary factors than we like to admit, challenging the idea of pure meritocracy.

While we can't control everything, we can influence the world around us through our actions. By embracing this mindset, we can feel more empowered and find meaning in our daily choices, recognizing that even small moments can have a significant impact on the future.

  3. 1006: Dr. Ramani | Surviving and Recovering from Narcissistic Abuse

    20 juni 2024 · 1 uur 26 min

    Afspelen
It’s Not You author Dr. Ramani Durvasula is here to help us identify narcissists, overcome the abuse we suffer in relationships with them, and heal. Lees meer

What We Discuss with Dr. Ramani Durvasula:

Narcissists can often be recognized by common traits like being know-it-alls, interrupting frequently, driving dangerously, throwing tantrums when frustrated, and displaying a strong sense of entitlement. But what kind of narcissists are you dealing with in your everyday life?

Strategies for coping with narcissistic relationships when leaving is not an option.

The role of cognitive dissonance in keeping people trapped in narcissistic relationships and how creating a written record of abusive behaviors can help overcome this psychological barrier.

Growing up with a narcissistic parent can lead to difficulty forming one's own identity and a tendency to accommodate others' needs while suppressing one's own. This pattern can make a person more vulnerable to entering narcissistic relationships in adulthood.

While it may seem daunting, healing from a narcissistic relationship is possible. By developing self-compassion, understanding that the abuse was not your fault, and gradually reclaiming aspects of your life that you enjoy (like hobbies, favorite foods, or social activities), you can begin to rebuild your sense of self and create a fulfilling life, even if the process takes time.

  4. 1005: David Fajgenbaum | Leveraging AI to Cure Rare Diseases

    18 juni 2024 · 1 uur 17 min

    Afspelen
After treating his own rare disease, Chasing My Cure author David Fajgenbaum explains how existing drugs can help other sufferers survive the unknown. Lees meer

What We Discuss with David Fajgenbaum:

Dr. David Fajgenbaum nearly died multiple times from a rare ailment called Castleman disease, for which there was no effective treatment available.

The current healthcare system does not incentivize pharmaceutical companies to find new uses for existing drugs, especially for rare diseases, leaving many potential treatments undiscovered.

Driven by his own experiences, Dr. Fajgenbaum realized that many existing FDA-approved drugs could be used to fight rare diseases for which they weren't originally intended.

Dr. Fajgenbaum founded Every Cure, a nonprofit organization that uses AI to match existing drugs with rare diseases they could potentially treat, greatly accelerating the process of finding cures.

You can make a positive impact by supporting organizations like Every Cure, which are working tirelessly to find treatments for rare diseases using innovative approaches. Consider donating to their cause, spreading awareness about their mission, or even sharing your own experiences with off-label drug use that has helped you or someone you know. Every contribution, no matter how small, can help bring hope and relief to those suffering from rare diseases.

Misconceptions about memory are abundant, so Jessica Wynn is here to let us know which ones we're better off forgetting on this latest Skeptical Sunday! Lees meer

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

Our memories are more complex than just being videos that we can simply file away and retrieve at will.

There are three main processes that characterize how memory works: encoding, storage, and recall.

Forgetting is a feature, not a bug.

Some memories are more easily recalled than others, and our memories can be manipulated by a variety of factors.

While hotly debated, the concept of "repressed memories" doesn't seem to have the science to back it.

On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss:

Every time Jordan goes to the barber, he comes home with another story. Here's the latest.

It was the reddest of flags when the creepy brother-in-law-to-be hit on your mother and 13-year-old sister at your wedding. In the six years since, he's been making inappropriate advances toward you, but his brother — your husband — chooses to ignore this. How can you protect yourself and your children from this shadow-lurking predator if your husband won't?

Even when you try your best to exude warmth and empathy, you've been told your tone can come off as condescending — not ideal for your job as a hostage negotiator, and not entirely appreciated by your long-enduring wife. How can you enhance your self-awareness to adjust this tone to a more socially appropriate level?

Your sister and her family are obsessed with decreasing their carbon footprint to the point where your nephew has developed eco-anxiety. You want to attend a music festival that requires flying, but you're worried about the tension it might cause with your sister — who will definitely guilt you about choosing your own entertainment over her children's future. What should you do?

While shopping with your family, you witnessed a father verbally and physically threatening his young son in public. As a mandated reporter through your job as an educator and someone who cares about children, you're struggling with the…

  7. 1002: Charan Ranganath | The Mysteries of Memory and Why We Remember

    11 juni 2024 · 1 uur 31 min

    Afspelen
Forget what you thought you knew about memory! Why We Remember author Charan Ranganath joins us to share surprising insights into how we recall the past. Lees meer

What We Discuss with Charan Ranganath:

Memories are not literal recordings of the past, but are constructed in the moment based on bits and pieces of information. We often forget most details, and what we do remember can be distorted by our current context, beliefs, and the act of retelling memories.

Emotion and attention play a key role in memory formation. Emotionally charged events tend to be remembered more vividly because chemicals like norepinephrine promote neural plasticity. Distinctive, attention-grabbing elements of an experience are more likely to be encoded into long-term memory.

Memories can be unreliable in group settings due to interference between different people's recollections and the influence of dominant personalities. Eyewitness testimony is often flawed because of how malleable and suggestible human memory is.

The sense that time is passing slowly or quickly is tied to the distinctiveness of our episodic memories. Repetitive, non-distinctive experiences (like pandemic lockdowns) can make days feel long but weeks pass in a blur due to a lack of memorable event boundaries.

To improve your everyday memory, try to be mindful and limit distractions in the moment. You can deliberately create memory cues by vividly imagining a visual reminder that will help you recall information later. Diversifying your experiences and learning new things also helps keep your mind sharp and allows you to make creative connections. With some practice, you can harness your episodic memory to enrich your life.

    9 juni 2024 · 59 min

Haiti Policy House founder Wolf Pamphile is here to explain why, despite the country's ongoing crises, he remains optimistic about Haiti's future. Lees meer

Welcome to what we're calling our "Out of the Loop" episodes, where we dig a little deeper into fascinating current events that may only register as a blip on the media's news cycle and have conversations with the people who find themselves immersed in them.

On This Episode of Out of the Loop, We Discuss:

Haiti has a long history of instability, starting with its colonial past under France and Spain, followed by a devastating war for independence, and continuing with foreign interventions, dictatorships, natural disasters, and gang violence that have hindered its development.

Foreign powers, including France, the United States, and the Dominican Republic, have played significant roles in Haiti's struggles — from the crippling debt imposed by France after independence to the US occupation in the early 20th century and the Dominican Republic's anti-Haitian policies.

The 2010 earthquake was a devastating blow to Haiti, killing over 300,000 people and setting the country back decades in terms of infrastructure and development. This event, along with political instability, has contributed to the rise of powerful gangs that control much of the country.

The current situation in Haiti is dire, with gangs controlling large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and engaging in kidnappings, violence, and drug trafficking. The international community is attempting to intervene, with Kenya leading a police force to help stabilize the country, but the effectiveness of this intervention remains to be seen.

Despite the challenges, there are reasons for optimism about Haiti's future. A new generation of Haitians, both in Haiti and abroad, are working toward a better future for their country. Political groups are coming together to find consensus on the way forward, and organizations like the Haiti Policy House are ensuring that Ha…

  12. 997: Christopher Ahn | A Marine in Kim Jong-un's Crosshairs Part Two

    30 mei 2024 · 1 uur 4 min

    Afspelen
Marine veteran Christopher Ahn explains why he got involved with helping North Koreans defect to the West, and how this has put him in danger. [Part 2/2 — make sure to catch 1/2 here!] Lees meer

What We Discuss with Christopher Ahn:

In 2019, activist group Free Joseon broke into the North Korean embassy in Madrid with the goal of helping staff defect to the West. But the mission didn't go according to plan and had to be aborted.

Back in the US, Christopher Ahn was informed by the FBI that North Korea had discovered his identity as a participant in the botched embassy raid and planned to assassinate him. His identity was likely revealed when the FBI shared it with Spain.

Christopher is now facing extradition to Spain on charges related to the embassy incident, based on statements from North Korean officials. However, the credibility of those statements is questionable given the likelihood they were coerced.

If extradited to Spain, Christopher fears for his life from North Korean agents. His legal team is arguing there should be a humanitarian exception made to the extradition, given the unique circumstances, though this is an unprecedented legal argument.

Despite the challenges he faces as a result of his actions, Christopher remains dedicated to helping others in need. While his particular path is not one most will be called to follow, we can all reflect on how to courageously leverage our own skills and circumstances to uplift and empower others in need.

Marine veteran Christopher Ahn explains why he got involved with helping North Koreans defect to the West, and how this has put him in danger. [Part 1/2] Lees meer

What We Discuss with Christopher Ahn:

Christopher Ahn, a Korean-American Marine veteran, became involved in helping North Korean defectors escape through an organization called the Chosen Institute, founded by Adrian Hong.

In 2017, after the assassination of Kim Jong-un's half-brother Kim Jong-nam, Christopher was called upon to provide emotional support and protection for Kim Han-sol, Kim Jong-nam's son, who feared for his life.

Christopher met with Kim Han-sol and his family in Taiwan, providing them with a sense of safety and comfort while the Chosen Institute worked on a plan to find asylum for them.

Christopher's role in these operations was to offer emotional support and guidance to the defectors, drawing from his own family's experience as immigrants and his understanding of the immense courage it takes to leave everything behind for a chance at a better life.

In the second half of this two-part episode, we'll learn more about the part Christopher played in the 2019 incident at the North Korean embassy in Madrid for which he is facing life-threatening extradition.

  15. 994: A.J. Jacobs | The Year of Living Constitutionally

    23 mei 2024 · 1 uur 23 min

    Afspelen
What can a year of following the US Constitution per the founding fathers' intentions teach us about the future of democracy? A.J. Jacobs has answers here! Lees meer

What We Discuss with A.J. Jacobs:

The founding fathers were not entirely in favor of pure democracy. They feared mob rule and wanted checks and balances to prevent a tyranny of the majority. The Constitution was a big step forward for democracy at the time, but still had elements of elitism.

The original meaning and interpretation of parts of the Constitution, such as the Second Amendment and free speech rights, are quite different from how they are viewed today. Both liberal and conservative perspectives would likely disapprove of some of the original 18th century understandings.

The founding fathers seemed more open to changing minds and flexible thinking compared to the intransigent political positions common today. Examples like Ben Franklin and James Madison illustrate their willingness to admit uncertainty and change opinions based on reason and evidence.

American democracy is fragile and must be actively maintained and protected. A.J. Jacobs remains optimistic that reforms and hard work can help save the American democratic system, but it requires dedication and the American people deciding to "lift the sun up" on the country's future.

We can help revive an appreciation for democracy by making it fun and celebratory again, like it was back in the early days of America. Baking "election cakes" to share and enjoy while voting, or hosting festivities at polling places, can inject some much-needed positivity and help encourage participation. Simple acts like this are a good starting point to begin strengthening our civic society and democratic institutions.

  16. 993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs

    21 mei 2024 · 1 uur 27 min

    Afspelen
Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny! Lees meer

What We Discuss with Johann Hari:

Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.

Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.

New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.

While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option.

The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time.

What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday! Lees meer

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society.

The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates.

The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations.

The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.

Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.

    Afspelen
Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. Lees meer

What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt:

Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.

Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.

Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.

Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.

Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults.

What We Discuss with Robert Mazur:

How Robert, working undercover for US Customs and the DEA, posed as a money launderer to infiltrate Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel and other criminal organizations.

Money laundering enables cartels to produce their most lethal product: corruption. Corrupt officials and governments facilitate drug trafficking operations.

Money laundering methods are highly sophisticated, involving legitimate businesses, secret codes, and multi-national operations to evade detection.

Banks and the global financial system need to change to combat money laundering effectively, with severe penalties for those involved in facilitating the flow of illicit funds.

Despite the risks and close calls, Robert continued his undercover work to gather intelligence and evidence against drug cartels until it became clear that the price his family was paying was not worth continuing.

Has technology weaponized pornography into a public health crisis? Michael Regilio takes us through modern porn's ins and outs on this Skeptical Sunday! Lees meer

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

High-speed internet porn is a recent phenomenon that provides an intense, novel experience unlike traditional pornography, hacking into our brain's evolutionary desires for new mates and triggering dopamine responses similar to drug addiction.

Pornography use, especially among adolescents and young adults who grew up with easy access to internet porn, has been linked to erosion of gray matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which controls impulse control and decision-making.

Porn use has been associated with sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction in young men, as well as difficulties forming emotional bonds and intimacy in relationships.

While some psychologists dispute the existence of "porn addiction," neuroscientific evidence shows porn use can lead to compulsive behaviors and brain changes resembling substance addictions.

While some political efforts have been made to declare porn a public health crisis, there is little policy action based on scientific evidence to provide resources for treatment and awareness.

What challenges can the ocean help us meet, and what must we do to safeguard its treasures? The Underworld author Susan Casey dives deep for answers here! Lees meer

What We Discuss with Susan Casey:

The ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate and serves as the largest carbon sink on the planet, making its preservation essential for mitigating climate change.

The ocean is home to a fascinating array of creatures that have adapted to extreme conditions, such as iron-breathing microbes, glass sponges, and jellyfish that can reverse their life cycle.

Pollution, including plastics, chemical weapons, and nuclear waste, has severely impacted the ocean ecosystem, with some deep-sea creatures found to have plastic particles embedded in their organs.

There are an estimated three million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, preserving valuable historical artifacts and information — such as the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek analog computer.

Exploring the ocean can lead to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine, Earth's history, and climate, providing valuable insights for addressing humanity's challenges — provided we safeguard this treasury of knowledge for current and future generations.

Should we worry that the complex dynamics between Israel and Iran might ignite WWIII? Intelligence analyst Ryan McBeth brings us in from Out of the Loop. Lees meer

Welcome to what we're calling our "Out of the Loop" episodes, where we dig a little deeper into fascinating current events that may only register as a blip on the media's news cycle and have conversations with the people who find themselves immersed in them.

On This Episode of Out of the Loop:

Israel and Iran have been engaged in recent attacks on each other, with Israel striking Iranian officers in Syria, Iran launching drones at Israel, and Israel firing missiles back at Iran. However, neither side seems to want a wider conflict.

Iran's military is split between the regular Artesh forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC gets better equipment and training and has a Quds Force that specializes in unconventional warfare.

Iran and Israel both lack strong expeditionary capabilities to directly attack each other. Iran's navy is mostly small fast attack boats, while Israel has a defensive-oriented military.

Many ordinary Iranian citizens oppose their government and the Ayatollahs. The people should not be conflated with the regime. Iran has a large young population that is quite pro-Western.

Overall, a massive conventional war between Israel and Iran remains unlikely due to the geographic and military constraints on both sides, despite the harsh rhetoric. However, proxy conflicts and tit-for-tat strikes may continue.

Children's Rescue Initiative founder Bruce Ladebu joins us to discuss the 20 years he's spent liberating hundreds of people from slavery and trafficking! Lees meer

What We Discuss with Bruce Ladebu:

Human trafficking and slavery affect around 40 million globally, generating $150 billion per year. Exploitation includes forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trafficking of all ages.

Heartless and often sadistic traffickers prey on the most vulnerable and desperate populations, including disaster-stricken children and marginalized minorities. Corruption and apathy among local authorities and law enforcement allow this atrocity of an industry to thrive.

Rescuing trafficking victims is perilous work, but Bruce Ladebu's team has saved hundreds over the past 20 years. Extensive physical and mental rehabilitation in the aftermath is often necessary for these survivors to cope with the trauma they've endured.

Children's Rescue Initiative is Bruce's organization that provides funding for a variety of programs that help to rescue children from trafficking and slavery, provide them with shelter and care, and help them reintegrate into society.

Donating cash is just one way to help — people can also volunteer their time to organizations like Children's Rescue Initiative that are working to combat human trafficking and slavery. There are a number of ways to volunteer, such as working in a shelter, providing legal assistance, or advocating for policy changes.

  35. 974: Emotional Support Animals | Skeptical Sunday

    7 april 2024 · 40 min

    Afspelen
Are too many people abusing laws that allow service animals to accompany the legitimately disabled? Michael Regilio walks us through this Skeptical Sunday! Lees meer

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

If you've noticed a proliferation of people threatening legal repurcussions if they aren't allowed to go absolutely everywhere with their emotional support animals, you're not alone. They're just hoping you don't know the difference between emotional support animals and service animals.

Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities and are legally protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), while emotional support animals provide comfort to their owners but do not have the same level of training — and are not covered by the ADA.

There are some legal allowances for emotional support animals, but they vary depending on the state.

Those who abuse the system by insisting their emotional support animals be allowed to accompany them everywhere undermine people who legitimately rely on their service animals to get around.

It's important to understand the difference between these two types of animals so we can provide appropriate care and support to both animals and their handlers (and call out the fakers who ruin it for everyone).
