The Ramble: Liverpool still unbeaten, Everton pick up, and Villa turn it around
21 oktober 2019 · 1 uur 3 min
Man United brought an end to Liverpool’s perfect start, all among a sea of digs from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a Sky Sports studio panel that were set up to put the boot well and truly in. Elsewhere, Jack Grealish shone for Aston Villa and Marco Silva’s Everton seemed to listen to Everton’s Marco Silva for once as they secured a comfortable win over West Ham. Lees meer

The Blizzard: Aberdeen 3-2 Bayern Munich, 1983
19 oktober 2019 · 41 min
On today’s Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by author and Sunday Times’ Chief Football Writer Jonathan Northcroft! He joins us to talk about “the greatest experience he’s ever had watching football”. Lees meer
After winning the Scottish Cup the previous season Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen side swept through the early rounds - conceding only one goal - and then drew the first leg of this quarter-final 0-0 in Munich, which was a success in itself. Ferguson then deployed some fantastic ruses to ensure the German side and travelling press pack underestimated Aberdeen, including a chaotic training session involving wayward passes hitting teammates in the head! But what followed was one of the most glorious ninety minutes of football The Dons’ fans will ever see. Jonathan talks through what it was like watching the game on the terraces as Aberdeen executed Ferguson’s tactics perfectly, and knocked out one of European football’s aristocrats.

The Blizzard: Benfica 5-3 Real Madrid, 1962
5 oktober 2019 · 37 min
Join Marcus Speller and Jonathan Wilson, this time alongside author and commentator David Bolchover, for another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Today we’re heading back to 1962 to celebrate one of the most influential figures in 20th century football: Béla Guttmann. His Benfica side beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 European Cup final, and this extraordinary game was entirely reflective of an extraordinary man. Lees meer
After arriving at Benfica, having won the league the season before with Porto, Guttmann immediately sacked twenty first team players. He then took Benfica to two Primeira Divisāo titles and a triumph in the previous European Cup, before meeting five-time winners Real Madrid in the 1962 final in Amsterdam. A thrilling, chaotic game featuring a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick finished 5-3 to Benfica, with Guttmann cementing himself as one of the finest coaches of any generation.

The Blizzard: Rangers 2-2 Celtic, 1987
28 september 2019 · 36 min
There are some football derbies that transcend the ninety minutes on the pitch and the few annual fixtures, and instead become knitted into the fabric of the societies they inhabit. The Old Firm Derby is one of the definitive derbies in world football and we’re heading to the 1987 tie between Rangers and Celtic for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. The Blizzard: Maccabi vs Hapoel, 1928

In these clubs’ formative years, football was an entirely different proposition in Israel-Palestine. Initially seen as too individualistic a sport, it was gradually introduced by the British military and helped by mass immigration of younger people from Austro-Hungarian cities after the First World War. Jonathan, Marcus and Nicholas discuss the background around the two sides, each formed of an entirely different demographic, as well as the 3-0 Maccabi win and its historical significance.

The Ramble: Jubilation for Norwich, Chelsea’s youngsters impress, and Arsenal revert to type

“A pleasing weekend of football in which many of the topics were covered, such as Norwich City’s win over Manchester City which was perhaps not expected, Liverpool asserting their sporting superiority over the struggling Newcastle United and Arsenal showing much quality in the first half of their game with Watford and then perhaps letting themselves down in the second.
There is also much discussion of the parting of the Red Sea, which is slightly off of the topics, there is some controversy regarding the designated email section of the podcast and some perhaps unnecessary discussion of dog boobs.”

The Blizzard: Peru 4-2 Austria, 1936
14 september 2019 · 41 min
Today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, sees us travel back to the 1936 German Olympics. Journalist and sports writer David Owen joins us to discuss the chaotic quarter-final between Peru and Austria. Lees meer
The game was played against a backdrop of Nazi rule and propaganda in front of a fairly empty Stadion am Gesundbrunnen. These were two sides with contrasting fortunes throughout the 1930’s; Peru were beginning an impressive run of form that culminated in a victory at the 1939 Copa América, while Austria had begun a stark decline. Despite the sides’ lowly reputation, the match and extended aftermath were utterly bizarre. Join us as David, Jonathan and Marcus discuss a tumultuous affair involving a pitch invasion, three disallowed goals and a rescheduled game.

The Blizzard: Ajax 2-0 Panathinaikos, 1971
7 september 2019 · 36 min
For today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by another member of the Football Ramble Daily parish: Andy Brassell! He’s here to discuss the 1971 European Cup final, where Rinus Michels’ imperious Ajax side took on Ferenc Puskás’ Panathinaikos. Lees meer
Ferenc Puskás’ return to Wembley - eighteen years after his miraculous display in Hungary’s 6-3 hiding of England - was most significant achievement in his coaching career. He led an unfancied but hugely talented Panathinaikos side past Everton and Red Star Belgrade in the latter stages of the competition to the final, against one of the most significant teams in football history. Captained by Velibor Vasović and featuring a Johan Cruyff at the peak of his powers, this era-defining Ajax side went on to enjoy huge success with their Total Football philosophy, and this final may well have been the sliding doors moment at the beginning of it all.
We discuss the match itself, the political landscape surrounding Panathinaikos at the time and this pivotal moment in Dutch football history, which Jonathan sums up via a splendid gardening metaphor!

The Blizzard: Brazil 0-1 France, 2006
31 augustus 2019 · 38 min
For our latest episode of Greatest Games, we’re joined by football writer and broadcaster Tom Williams as we take a deeper look at the 2006 World Cup quarter-final between Brazil and France. This match, despite being awash with some of the greatest players in history, was completely dominated by the balletic and utterly irresistible Zinedine Zidane. Lees meer
After two poor seasons with Real Madrid, many—Zidane included—felt his star was on the wane. So pervasive was this sentiment, that he announced his retirement ahead of this tournament. What followed however, against Spain in the Round of 16 and against Brazil, was a final glimpse of Zidane at his best in all his former glory. This Joga Bonito-inspired Brazil side, featuring some of the nation’s greatest attacking talent ever, could do nothing in response. Zidane left his mark on this game in broad, beautiful strokes and cemented himself as one of the greatest midfielders football has ever seen.

The Blizzard: Blackpool 4-3 Bolton, 1953
24 augustus 2019 · 35 min
For our latest episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at that thrilling 1953 FA Cup final contested by Blackpool and Bolton: ‘The Stanley Matthews Final’. Joining us is Seb Stafford-Bloor, a writer for Football365 and Four Four Two magazine, as well as a content editor of Tifo Football. Lees meer
This final was a hugely significant moment in British football history. As it was the first final to be broadcast live on the BBC, the match was watched by a huge, unprecedented audience from all over the country. It also took place around the time that football was just beginning to be considered as the true ‘game of the people’ and still remains the only final where a hat-trick was scored. Seb, Jonathan and Marcus sit down and recount the rudimentary tactics and goalkeeping errors that led this match to be one of the most thrilling cup finals ever played.
