We recorded this episode just after the horrific Bondi attack by Joel Cauchi on April 13 2024, where he stabbed 18 people including a nine-month-old baby killing her mother, Ashlee Good, and four other women, Dawn Singleton, Jade Young, Pikria Darchia, Yixuan Cheng and one man, Faraz Tahir, who died trying to protect women. Cauchi was shot dead by a brave female Inspector from New South Wales Police, Amy Scott, who single handedly pursued him through the mall.
There has been an increase in male violence to women and femicides with many Australians taking to the streets to demand urgent action to end male violence to women. At the start of Domestic Violence Prevention Month in Australia, women are quite rightly angry, and Laura wanted to focus on women’s voices, honour the victims and spotlight what needs to change. The first attack known to police was the rape of a 10-year-old girl on 15 November 2001 in Ashford, Kent. When she was grabbed in broad daylight from outside a busy police-run youth club, she was told by the male attacker he would break her legs and she would be killed if she screamed.
In July 2002 he attacked a 30-year-old woman in Earlswood Surrey. He attacked another woman in Surrey, another in Hertfordshire and in London. On one occasion he raped two women in the same day. Women were terrified and the police were under pressure to catch him. Listen and let us know what you think.

Professor Burgess is an internationally recognized pioneer in the assessment and treatment of victims of trauma and abuse, and author of A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind, Rape Investigation and Crime Classification. She has received numerous honours and awards for her work and her courtroom testimony has been described as “groundbreaking,” and she has been called a “nursing pathfinder.”
Professor Burgess and Lynda Lytle Holmstrom conducted the first study of rape victims and trauma, and that work caught the attention of the FBI which is depicted in the Netflix show Mindhunter (Dr Wendy Carr). It would later inform Laura’s work at New Scotland Yard.

Laura and Hazel discuss the multiple forms of abuse the boys were subjected to, including coercive control and the omnipresent threat Jose Menendez posed to Lyle and Erik. It’s also important to underline that the testimonies that Lyle and Erik gave about the abuse at the first trial was totally uncontradicted and uncontroverted evidence. The prosecution did not ask one single question about the abuse.
Hazel shares the slew of sexist and misogynistic insults directed at the female jurors who believed the boys were abused and were in fear for the lives because they understood the evidence presented and the psychology of abuse.
In May 2023 a habeas petition was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court detailing two new key pieces of evidence revealing that, contrary to what the prosecution said in their closing speech in the second trial that Jose Menendez was not only a violent, sadistic, and brutal man who sexually abused his own children, but that he was abusing other boys including Roy Roselló who was in the boy band, Menudo.

Jose and Kitty were shot dead on August 20, 1989, at their home in Beverly Hills. 21-year-old Lyle and 18-year-old Erik were later arrested for their parents’ murders. The dominant narrative in the media was that they were greedy, rich kids who killed their parents in cold blood for money.
In this episode Laura goes behind the scenes of the trial with Hazel, who shares why the narrative didn’t make sense at the trial and why she didn’t believe that Lyle and Erik killed their parents for money.
Both brothers went on trial at the same time for murdering their parents, albeit each brother had their own jury. Hazel sat on the jury for Erik Menendez. Each jury deliberated separately, and each jury resulted in a deadlock. Hazel explains what was going on between the 6 men and 6 women on her jury having heard the 51 witnesses who gave evidence about the insidious, cruel, and torturous abuse the boys were subjected to by Jose Menendez.
The same judge, Judge Stanley Weisberg presided over the second trial which began in October 1995. This time around Judge Weisberg changed the rules and decided there would be no cameras in court. David Conn, on behalf of the prosecution, asked the judge not to allow the sexual abuse history and so Judge Weisberg limited the witnesses that the defense could call and via a last-minute ruling refused to allow the imperfect self-defense theory.
In closing, Conn, told the jury that the ‘abuse is a total fabrication’, that they had heard no evidence of the abuse and it was the ‘silliest story ever told in a courtroom.’ He said it was the perfect example of the ‘abuse excuse.’
The jury found Lyle and Erik guilty of murder and they were sentenced to life without parole. Lyle and Erik have been in prison for 33 years.

On Friday 14th July, 59-year-old husband and father of two, Rex Heuermann, was charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman. Their remains were discovered within a quarter of a mile of one another covered in burlap along Ocean Parkway on Long Island’s South Shore in 2010. Heuermann is also suspected of other murders including Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Kerri’s father Dennis Rader was 59, the president of the church, and married with two children when he was arrested in 2005. He was later charged with the murders of 10 people in Wichita and Park City, Kansas between 1974 and 1991. He is suspected of others. Rader centered himself in the Gilgo Beach Murders on Friday 21 July, writing a letter to Fox News Digital laying out similarities between himself and Rex Heuermann.
Laura believes men like Rader and Heuermann hide in plain sight and are overlooked for similar reasons. Just like what’s happening with the Heuermann case right now, when Rader was arrested, his family, friends, and co-workers were shocked to discover that the serial killer police were hunting had been among them, going to work, raising his children, and acting ‘normal.’ But Laura doesn’t buy into that. She believes we are asking the wrong questions and that we must use the framework of coercive control and make the invisible visible.
Whilst working at the FBI in Quantico, Laura continued her research and analysis into serial perpetrators, which included an in-depth case conference with the FBI profiler who played a pivotal role in Dennis Rader’s capture, interviewing Rader for more than 30 hours.
