Why does stress matter for our health? In this episode of Core Concepts, postdoctoral researcher Susanne Kuckuck (Erasmus MC) unpacks the relationship between stress and cardiometabolic health: how our hearts, our weight, and our metabolism respond to stress over time. Lees meer

Susanne says: "Diamonds are made under pressure, but so are obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease". In this conversation, we cover the role cortisol has in appetite regulation, differences between short-term and long-term stress, and how the latter raises the risk for cardiometabolic disease. This is a quick dive into what you need to know about how stress shapes long-term health.

  2. What is stress? – Dynamics of the stress response with Ellen Stroemer – Core Concepts #3

    14 oktober 2026 · 16 min

    Afspelen
Now that we have explored the different components of the stress response, we dive a little deeper into another important aspect: timing. The stress response is not a single moment in time. Instead, it unfolds across different phases. “Part of the stress response can actually happen before the stressful event occurs—we call this anticipation,” explains Ellen Stroemer, a PhD candidate jointly at the University Medical Center Groningen and the University of Groningen. This is typically followed by an immediate reactive phase, as we deal with the stressor itself, and finally recovery, as we gradually return towards our normal state. Lees meer

While we can label these different phases, what they actually look like can vary dramatically from person to person and situation to situation. Through cameo examples from Sara and Marlou, we see how differently these stress responses can unfold in everyday life.

For researchers, all of these phases can provide valuable information. However, Ellen explains how focusing on a particular phase of the stress response can help answer more specific questions, for example, about when and how stress may become harmful.

Finally, she discusses how her own research on age, life phases, and emotion regulation can help us understand why the timing and course of the stress response may differ between people.

  3. What is stress? – The dimensions of the stress response with Solomiia Myroniuk – Core Concepts #2

    30 september 2026 · 13 min

    Afspelen
In this episode of Core Concepts, we dive into the stress response. In other words, what happens to us after we encounter a stressor. Lees meer

Within Stress in Action, the stress response is a central concept of our research but also a broad and complex one. Solomiia Myroniuk, a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen, explains that while we cannot directly measure “the stress response” as a whole, we can measure its different components. She takes us through four key components of the stress response: cognitive, affective, physiological, and behavioural. Importantly, these components do not always have clear boundaries. They can overlap, both conceptually and in the way they are measured in research.

A major focus of Solomiia’s work is disentangling this overlap and improving the precision of stress-response measurement. As she explains, “When we measure (the stress response) we need to be precise to know exactly what we are measuring and to communicate this to other researchers.”

We also discuss coping, how it relates to the different dimensions of the stress response, and some of the challenges involved in studying these processes.

  4. What is stress? – Stressors with Malin Meyer – Core Concepts #1

    16 september 2026 · 16 min

    Afspelen
What really is stress? In the Stress in Action research program, we distinguish stress into two parts: stressors and stress responses. In the first episode of Core Concepts, PhD Candidate Malin Meyer (University Medical Center Groningen) explains the first component, the stressors. Malin explains: "If somebody says, I'm really stressed, then basically my research is about the question, what is stressing you? So what is the stressor?”. Lees meer

Malin explains how everyday stressors differ from major life events. She introduces four “puzzle pieces” that shape how we define stressors: their type (event vs. ongoing state or condition), function (demands, constraints, or even opportunities), time (present experiences vs. anticipated or remembered ones), and source (external events vs. internal thoughts, pain, or imagery). She also shows how these definitions directly influence how researchers measure stress—and therefore what they can ultimately discover: “What you measure is what you find."

Stress is an umbrella term for many experiences we face in life. We intuitively know what it means but, at the same time, we don’t fully understand it. Is then the term ‘’stress” too vague to actually explain anything about health and disease? Stress is the leading cause of global burden on healthcare, so how can we better define and understand it? These questions are explored by our guest dr. Bertus Jeronimus, a clinical and developmental psychologist and researcher at the University of Groningen. As he is currently working on a theory of daily life stress, Bertus explains that precision is key to sort out all the aspects that make up the sometimes confusing concept of stress. We talk about the adaptive function of stress throughout life, the way stress is understood in different fields, and the role of personality types. We also examine the importance of how one interprets and handles stressful experiences (i.e., appraisal and coping). As always, a complex yet fascinating topic. We hope you enjoy it.

Daar gaat ethiek over.

Stress is a full body experience, deeply connected to your perception of a situation, to your thoughts and feelings. It can be beneficial in some contexts and detrimental in others, especially when you keep experiencing it chronically. According to endocrinologist and stress research expert prof. dr. Liesbeth van Rossum (Erasmus MC), chronic stress causes one of the world’s leading health problems: obesity. Liesbeth aims to dive deeper into all the factors that make up a person’s health to better understand why someone may
become obese. Tackling obesity requires more than “move more, eat less”. Being sensitive to the multifactorial nature of obesity can lead to better personalized treatment and can help reduce the stigma around it. Of course, a healthy lifestyle is the foundation, but we also need changes at the societal level to prevent the development of obesity. We need healthy food to be cheaper, a work environment that reduces instead of creates stress, and easier access to help when needed. Give the episode a listen learn more on the biology of stress, its connection to obesity and what Liesbeth does at the
European level to develop health policies! I hope you enjoy it.

  20. Meike Bartels on wellbeing and no-size-fits-all

To be well is to feel well and function well. It’s a simple idea according to international wellbeing research expert prof. dr. Meike Bartels (VU Amsterdam). But what does this mean when we examine it more closely? In short, no one size fits all. Life is complex, we all have our own peculiar interpretation of it, and it even changes as we age and experience new things. That’s why Meike emphasizes taking the time to know oneself as the first step in the journey towards wellbeing. Nonetheless, this is also a communal effort. For us to feel and function better, we need a paradigm shift. We need to embrace what makes us different, and scientific insights can help us do so. Combining data coming from genetic findings and modern tracking technologies, Meike aims to dive deeper into each person’s health to explore what feels better for each and every one of us. Ultimately, if you’re well, then you’ll contribute to other people’s wellbeing too. And what goes around, comes around. Everybody wins. Lees meer

  22. Brenda Penninx on studying depression, anxiety and the Stress in Action Project

    5 november 2024 · 48 min

    Afspelen
Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health disorders, and their prevalence is rising. Why? International expert in mental health research prof. dr. Brenda Penninx says several factors contribute to this. One reason is that many who need treatment don’t receive it. Another is that current treatments like psychotherapy and medication are not enough for full recovery. Moreover, we often consider these conditions as one-dimensional and episodic when, in reality, they are multidimensional and chronic lifelong journeys. Finally, more needs to be done to tackle an incredibly common and crucial causal factor in their development. That factor is STRESS. That’s why in 2023 Brenda kickstarted a large research project called Stress in Action. Over the next 10 years, the project will focus on understanding how daily life stress impacts both mental and cardiometabolic health. Using smartphone and wearable technology, the goal is to create a toolkit for tracking stress in real time, providing people and healthcare practitioners with resources that can prevent disease and promote healthier lifestyles.
