Numbers 7-8 continues the theme of preparing Israel for marching from Mount Sinai by recounting each tribe’s tribute and offerings brought to the tabernacle as part of the opening ceremonies of the tabernacle and by describing the cleansing procedures for the Levites. Numbers 5-6 Lees meer
These two chapters continue the theme of preparing the Israelite camp for marching out. The concern in these chapters is for the purity of the camp. First, they address two general matters: major ritual impurities and sin of wronging another person in the camp. Then they provide instructions for two very specific issues: suspected marital unfaithfulness and special devotion by means of the Nazirite vow. Finally, Numbers 6 ends with a prayer for the Lord to bless his people--the well-known Aaronic Blessing.

Numbers 3-4 Lees meer
It has been 13 months since the Exodus and Israel has been camped at the base of Mt Sinai for most of that time. There they have entered into a covenant with Yahweh to be his people. They will be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation on God's behalf. They’ve received the Law which teaches them God’s ways for their time and they have built the tabernacle and launched tabernacle worship.
Now it’s time to pack up and move out, heading to the land God had promised to Abraham and to them as his descendants. So in Numbers 1-2 God instructs Moses to count and arrange the people into military divisions.
Now here, in Numbers 3-4, the instructions are directed to the priests and the Levites, preparing them for their responsibilities as they move out. They weren’t counted before because they aren’t going to serve as part of the military but they have other important responsibilities pertaining to caring for and transporting the tabernacle.

Numbers 1-2

Numbers 1-2 Lees meer
Numbers picks up 13 months after the exodus recorded in Exodus ch. 12. Israel left Egypt as a loosely connected band of family clans and tribes. They were redeemed our of Egypt by God’s strong right hand. God delivered them through the red sea and after several weeks they finally arrived at Mt. Sinai.
They have been camped their ever since, for the rest of the book of Exodus… right up to the end when they first set up the tabernacle and all the way through the instructions given in the book of Leviticus (which really only covers a couple weeks). So they’ve been at Sinai for a year and now it’s time to prepare to move out to the land God had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
That’s where the book of Numbers picks up in chapters 1-2. These chapters focus on getting organized into military units that are prepared to march out.

Leviticus 25-27, pt. 2
9 september 2026 · 29 min
Leviticus 25-27, pt. 2 Lees meer
The topic of chs. 25-27 can be thought of as “holiness in the land.” Israel has been camped at Mt. Sinai for about a year and it is almost time to march out. When they move into the land of promise, settle there, and build houses and have land to farm, what does it look like to live as God’s holy people then and there? That is the big theme of these chapters.
In this recording, we survey chapters 26-27. Leviticus 26 records the blessings for keeping the covenant and the curses for violating the covenant. Those blessings and curses are all tied to the land. Leviticus concludes in chapter 27 with instructions for worshipping and honoring God with their possessions by means of voluntary vows of people, animals, or property, required offering over to God of animals or people, and tithes.
And as we wrap up Leviticus, those of us in Christ need to remember that we are the ones who now the same identity and the same calling that Israel did.
Just like God said of Israel, Peter says “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Pet 2:9).
And he applies the very words of Leviticus to us in 1 Peter 1:15-16: but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written: “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Leviticus 23-24
26 augustus 2026 · 30 min
Leviticus 23-24 Lees meer
Leviticus 23-24 continues the theme of ritual holiness. We have to be careful not to think of this as “mere rituals that don’t really matter.” Our modern instinctive dislike of rituals in the West prompts us to think like that. But the rituals and instructions of Leviticus 23-24 matter for Israel's overall life as a people distinct and different from the nations -- as God’s holy people, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
So in the whole section of Leviticus 21-24 the main question is, what does it look like to respect the people, places, things, and times that belong to the Lord as holy? And in Leviticus 23-24 one of the main emphases is on time: what will Israel's weekly and annual calendar look like that will set them apart for the Lord?

Leviticus 21-22
19 augustus 2026 · 28 min
Leviticus 21-22 Lees meer
Leviticus 21-22 provided special instructions for the priests. Leviticus 18-20 were addressed to the entire congregation of Israel and dealt mostly with holiness in everyday life. Since Israel as a whole is set apart for the Lord (=holy) to be a holy nation, chapters 18-20 detailed some of the ways they had to be distinct and different from the nations personally, socially, and ritually.
But here in Leviticus 21-22 we shift to the priests. Since they are set apart as a special holy class within the nation, these chapters describe some of the ways hey had to be distinct and different from the rest of Israel.
So these chapters record what might be called "priestly holiness."

Special Study: How Do the Laws of Leviticus Apply Today?
12 augustus 2026 · 36 min
Special Study: How Do the Laws of Leviticus (and the rest of the Torah) Apply Today? Lees meer
Some of the Laws of the Torah seem easy to apply. For example, love your neighbor as yourself is found in Leviticus 19:18. Others feel foreign. The very next verse tells us not to wear a garment woven of two kinds of fabric (Leviticus 19:19). There are plenty of laws that seem strange or even impossible to keep in modern culture. So how do such laws apply today?
In this special study we show why one common approach--breaking the laws into civil, ceremonial, and moral-- isn't the best way to approach such laws.
Instead we recommend treating the laws as part of God's covenant with Israel and thus no longer our covenant in Christ. We are not under the Law. But at the same time, the Law is still Scripture for us and instructive to us as Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
We end by recommending an approach for applying the values and wisdom of the laws to our life and world today.

Leviticus 18-20 is usually called "The Holiness Code." It details God's instructions to Israel for holy living in routine matters of everyday life. Holiness mean different, distinct, set apart for God's purposes. If Israel is going to be a holy nation (cf. Exodus 19:6), then they need to be different from the nations around them. They must be holy as God is holy.

Leviticus 17 answers that question by focusing on the sacredness of blood. God gave animal blood for the purpose of atonement. Therefore, now that the tabernacle is operational, the only legitimate sacrifices are those offered at the tabernacle, and all meat must have blood drained from it.

Leviticus 8-10

Leviticus 8-10 Lees meer
Leviticus 8-10 recounts the opening ceremonies for the Tabernacle, and it's important to remember where we’re at in the story of the Pentateuch (Torah).
The Israelites have come out of Egypt and they’re camped at the foot of Mt. Sinai. God has instructed them to build a sacred tent for him, so he can dwell among them. They have now done that. They just got the tabernacle set up!
Then God has moved in… his glory came down from the mountain and moved into the tabernacle. And his glory and holiness are so great that no one can enter the tabernacle, not even Moses. That’s where Exodus ended
Leviticus picks up in chapters 1-7 with God inviting Moses to come near and God meets with Moses giving him instructions on 5 different sacrifices/offerings:
whole burnt offering
grain offering
fellowship offering
purification/sin offering
guilt/restitution offering
Why all these offerings? Becasue these offerings are God’s gracious gift to the people so that they can draw near to God at his sacred tent and so that they can maintain their covenant relationship with him.
So the tabernacle is set up. They now know what they need to do to draw near to God. So now, it’s time to kick things off... it’s time to launch the worship of Yahweh at the Tabernacle.
Leviticus 8-10 details the inauguration of Tabernacle worship.

Leviticus 4-7 Lees meer
In Leviticus 1-7, God is giving Moses instructions for the 5 main sacrifices for Israel's worship at the Tabernacle. Chapters 1-3 details the first three. Leviticus 4-6 detail the next two, the sin (or better, purification) offering and the guilt or restitution offering.
These two offerings are very similar. It even says in these chapters “the guilt offering is like the sin offering.” They both deal with inadvertent wrongdoing that needs atonement. The key difference is that guilt offerings are for matters where restitution or repayment can be made as well.
Also included in these chapters are some special instructions for the priests for all five offerings.
All of this is by way of the Lord’s gracious provision, making clear what he required and how they could come before him in a way that honors his holiness.

Leviticus 1-3
10 juni 2026 · 29 min
Leviticus 1-3 Lees meer
Leviticus opens like this: “Then the Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying…” This makes it clear that it is continuing the story revealed in Exodus. Exodus ended like this: 40:34 -35 - Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
So while Leviticus is a separate book in our bibles, it’s still the same story. Leviticus records events that happen immediately after the tabernacle was set up… and it provides teaching related to worship, ritual purity, and holiness all because God is now living in their midst in the tabernacle.
The situation is this… God, the holy King of heaven and of Israel, has come to live right the middle of their camp in his own sacred, royal tent. His glory filled the tabernacle and no one can enter, not even Moses.
Leviticus picks up at this point and it’s going to provide instructions on what Israel needs to do to be able to draw near to God at the tabernacle: atonement will be need; ritual purity must be attended to; and holiness in all of life must also be attended to.
This is where we’re at in the story and this is what Leviticus is all about.
So, Leviticus 1-7 begins those instructions by providing instructions for the various sacrifices. There are 5 main sacrifices (with occasional variations on some of them). But 5 main ones:
Burnt offering
Grain offering
Peace or Fellowship offerings
Sin/Purification offering
Guilt/reparation offerings
Leviticus 1-3 provides instructions for the first three sacrifices.

Ritual Purity and Atonement in Leviticus

Ritual Purity and Atonement in Leviticus Lees meer
Reading Leviticus can feel very foreign... we might even say it's weird. And a huge part of that is because all the rules about clean and unclean. These rules rules are addressing the state of ritual purity and ritual impurity.
Ritual impurity in the Ancient Near East (ANE) was a status rendering a person temporarily unfit to enter sacred spaces (temples) or interact with the divine. Think of it like proper protocol for entering the sanctuary and approaching the Holy…. there are just things you don’t do when approaching the Holy!
So while the rules concerning ritual purity in Leviticus seem foreign to us (because they are!), to the ancient Israelite they were all very normal. In fact, an ancient Israelite might say to us, “Of course God gave us rules concerning ritual purity… it’s all very gracious of him … otherwise we’d have been in the same boat as the rest of the peoples and would not know how to approach him and enter his sacred space!”
This session of The Listener's Commentary on Leviticus aims to help you understand Leviticus more by explaining ritual purity and atonement.

Introduction to Leviticus
27 mei 2026 · 18 min
Introduction to Leviticus Lees meer
For most of us, Leviticus is a challenging read! If Exodus was more challenging than Genesis, Leviticus ramps it up even further. The first seven chapters are procedures for sacrifices. Later, there’s all sorts of teaching about clean and unclean foods and about behaviors that lead to ritual impurity and what to do about all that. A lot of the material in Leviticus is specifically for the priests, almost like a procedures manual.
And it all feels so…. weird and foreign (which it because it is!).
So in this recording I want to give a little backstory and introduction to Leviticus.

Special Study: Slavery in the Torah

Special Study: Slavery in the Torah Lees meer
Laws concerning slavery appear in several places in the Torah (the Pentateuch). This can be troubling, since slavery is a persistent human evil. In this special study of The Listener's Bible Commentary, we give one guiding principle and six considerations that help us hear the slavery laws as the were intended to be heard.
Our goal here is to prevent misunderstanding and promote a more full and accurate understanding because it’s too easy and too common for people to read what the Bible says through the lens of our modern experience and misunderstand what the Bible is actually communicating.

Exodus 35-40 Lees meer
In this section of the Bible book of Exodus, the tabernacle is built and the priestly garments are made. Since the covenant has been renewed, it’s time to build the tabernacle, fashion the priestly garments, and get everything ready for God to move in.
God gives his Spirit to two men, Bezalel and Oholiab, so that they can lead the project and the people respond with great generosity and dedication. They complete the tabernacle, all its furnishings, and the priestly garments exactly as the Lord had instructed Moses.
And at the end of the book, God moves from Mount Sinai into the tabernacle.
In this recording, we consider why so much space is devoted to the plans and construction of the tabernacle and what the theological message is in the context of the whole story of the Bible.

Exodus 32-34, pt. 2

Exodus 32-34, pt. 2 Lees meer
These chapters recount the famous "golden calf" incident, where Israel convince Aaron to set an idol in the form of gold bull and they worship it as their god who led them out of Egypt. In a real, sense this is the fall of Israel.
What makes it even more tragic and offensive is that they have just entered into their covenant with Yahweh less than 2 months ago and now they have violated that covenant. When Moses throws down and breaks the two tablets of the covenant, that action embodies what Israel has done.
The covenant is broken.
So now, the threat of God's absence hangs over the camp of Israel. God has said he will not move in among... it's an act of mercy protecting them from his own holiness.
But Moses intervenes.
And God relents, agreeing to be with Moses and to go with the people.
One very important moment in part 2 is when God shows himself to Moses. He passes by and declares, "The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in faithfulness and truth; 7 who keeps faithfulness for thousands, who forgives wrongdoing, violation of His Law, and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, inflicting the punishment of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
This is who God is and how he desires to be known. This is the most quoted passage of the Bible in the Bible. Our understanding of God should start here.

The main theme of the whole last section of Exodus - chapters 25-40 - is God presence in the midst of the Israelites. And the center of that is a specially designed royal tent where God will come to dwell right in the middle of the camp. We call this tent the Tabernacle.
In chapters 25-27 God begins giving Moses the blueprints for the Tabernacle.

Exodus 21-23 Lees meer
This is sometimes referred to as "The Book of the Covenant" because that is what it is called in Exodus 24:7-8, although that probably also includes Exodus 20. We need to remember that these regulations reflect “God’s ways in Israel’s days” (as one author puts it). These instructions are part of God’s covenant with this particular nation, Israel.
God is accommodating himself to their culture... These are case laws (notice the format of these regulations: “if this… then that”). This is simply acknowledging aspects of ordinary life and offering regulations for it… it’s not commanding these things to be this way. It is regulating life in their culture to bring about order (righteousness) and justice to their world, so that Israel can live as "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation" (Exodus 19:4-6). Many of the regulations is these chapters provide legal wisdom by showing how the 10 commandments apply to specific situations.

Exodus 19-20 Lees meer
These chapters are pivotal in book of Exodus. Israel arrives at Mount Sinai, where God meets with them and enters into a covenant with them. Because of that, these chapters are also pivotal in the history of Israel and the entire Bible.
God describes their status and vocation in Exodus 19:3-6:
3 And Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself. 5 Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; 6 and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
God also gives Israel the 10 Commandments in Exodus 20 as the foundation of his covenant with them.

Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, 2 “This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year for you. 3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are, each one, to take a lamb for themselves, according to the fathers’ households, a lamb for each household. 4 Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; in proportion to what each one should eat, you are to divide the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to slaughter it at twilight. 7 Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. 10 And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall completely burn with fire. 11 Now you shall eat it in this way: with your garment belted around your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in a hurry—it is the Lord’s Passover. 12 For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and fatally strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the human firstborn to animals; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will come upon you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

25:1 Now Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. 19 Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac; 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he to…
