Tuesdays with Tata #83: Prayer Beats Despair
25 april 2023 · 33 min
It’s Tuesdays with Tata! Lees meer
Today, a great talk about how prayer helps us change our mind, even when massive, difficult things are happening in our lives.
Scripture: II Corinthians 1
Books Mentioned:
The Awe of God by John Bevere
Words with God by Addison Bevere
Hey, my new book is releasing July 25. John and Addison Bevere are two of my early readers/endorsers. Here’s what they had to say about Hope is the First Dose.
“When hard things knock you out, you can’t stay out. Dr. Lee Warren prescribes a treatment plan that will help you rise again so you can discover hope in hardship.”
John Bevere, bestselling author, minister, and co-founder of Messenger International
“I should warn you that this book comes with deep breaths and the occasional tears. With beautiful prose and intimate insights, these pages take you where you need to go before life forces you to go there. And if you’re already ‘there,’ face to face with what Dr. Warren calls The Massive Thing, I have good news for you: you’ve found your book.”
Addison Bevere, author and COO of Messenger International

Finding Hope in the Hardest Moments With Scotty and Tiffany Smiley

[Flashback episode!] Lees meer
Even in our hardest moments, hope is always available. Join me for a great conversation about hope and perseverance with American heroes Scotty and Tiffany Smiley, and you'll find yourself inspired and uplifted in this dark time.
Blindness became Major Scotty Smiley’s journey of supreme testing. As he lay helpless in the hospital, he resented the theft of his dreams—becoming a CEO, a Delta Force operator, or a four-star general. With his wife Tiffany’s love and the support of his family and friends, Scotty’s response became God’s transforming moment. The injury only intensified his indomitable spirit. Since the moment he jumped out of a hospital bed and forced his way through nurses and cords to take a simple shower, Major Scotty Smiley has climbed Mount Rainier, won an ESPY as Best Outdoor Athlete, surfed, skydived, become a father, earned an MBA from Duke, taught leadership at West Point, commanded an army company, won the MacArthur Leadership Award and completed an Iron Man. Now he and his wife Tiffany travel all over the country sharing and inspiring others to find their hope unseen.

Words with God: A Conversation with Addison Bevere
18 april 2023 · 55 min
Be Honest: Is Your Prayer Life Everything You Want it to Be? Lees meer
Prayer is difficult for many of us. We’re busy, stressed, and often find ourselves wondering if God is even out there. We’re screaming into the void, and all we hear are the echoes of our own voices and the noises of the culture around us. Or, we’re desperately whispering our deepest needs, but we have no idea how to really connect with God, or whether he’s even listening at all.
But what if it doesn’t have to be this way? What if we really can learn to have real connection and conversation with a God who wants to know and be known by us?
That’s what my friend Addison Bevere is here to talk about today. Addison’s new book is Words with God: Trading Boring, Empty Prayer for Real Connection. It’s available today, everywhere books are sold. Click the button below for more information about Addison, and his wonderful new book that’s already locked in as one of my top books of 2023 (and all-time).
I can’t recommend this book highly enough, and I’m so excited to bring you this wonderful conversation today with my friend, Addison Bevere.
Here’s the description of Words with God from Amazon.com, including an endorsement from another one of my favorite writes, Mark Batterson (we use his book, All In, every year for our podcast series called All-In August).
For most of us, prayer is a struggle. Do our prayers even matter? What, if anything, happens when we pray? Are we having words with God or just words with ourselves?
We know we should pray. It would be good for us--help us be more grounded, more connected to God. But in our hurried lives, slowing down to pray can feel like a cosmic waste of time.
In this thoughtful book, bestselling author Addison Bevere takes you into and through the tension of prayer--the struggles, the doubts, the answers--to the place where God makes himself real to you. He tackles questions such as:
· What do we do with unanswered prayers and how do we move through them?
· Why doe…

Check Your Brain, with Jarrett Stephens

Is it Reasonable to Base Our Hope on the Bible? Lees meer
It’s Self-Brain Surgery Saturday, and today I’ve got a treat for you!
I had a great conversation with Pastor Jarrett Stephens, pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. We talked about why it’s reasonable to believe in and place our hope on God’s word. Do you have to be a moron to believe? Is there any rational basis for thinking that the Bible is inspired and not just a book of old stories and ideas written by people?
Jarrett takes us through why even smart people (even brain surgeons!) should have a high degree of confidence in the reliability of this book, and why the Bible isn’t like any other literature in the world- it’s living and active!
Jarrett is also the author of two great books, The Always God: He Hasn't Changed, and You Are Not Forgotten, and The Mountains are Calling: Making the Climb for a Clearer View of God and Ourselves.
Check out Jarrett's I Am Second video for more of his story.
Other book mentioned in this episode- The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism by Timothy Keller.
Hey, I just wrote a book about my research into how people process pain and find hope again after they experience what we call “The Massive Thing,” or TMT, Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things (coming July 25). Max Lucado on Anxiety and Fear
(This episode originally aired in 2020, in the height of the lockdowns of the Covid pandemic.)
My wife Lisa has been great friends with Max’s wife Denalyn for many years. So, when Lisa and I got married Max became more than just a pastor to me. He’s a true friend, and, as you’ll hear in this episode, he’s been there for me in my worst moment after my son died.
But Max isn’t just a pastor. He’s also a world-wide bestselling author of over 40 books. Max's books have sold over 100 million copies across 54 languages worldwide. But all that aside, despite his great success as a writer, Max is most at home in his role as a pastor.
So, since this is a time of great anxiety and stress, I thought that the Dr. Lee Warren Podcast listeners like you (and me) needed a pastor.
I reached out to Max, and he said he would be happy to come and minister to all of us today.

Faithfully Different, with Natasha Crain
11 maart 2023 · 59 min
It’s Self-Brain Surgery Saturday! Lees meer
Today’s guest is author and acclaimed podcast host, Natasha Crain.
Natasha Crain is a national speaker, author of four books, blogger, and podcaster who is passionate about equipping Christians to think more clearly about holding to a biblical worldview in the midst of an increasingly challenging secular culture. She has been featured on radio and TV shows across the U.S. and Canada, and lives in southern California with her husband and three children. She writes at natashacrain.com.
Book introduction (from Amazon.com):
Welcome to your place in a worldview minority.
In an increasingly secular society, those who have a biblical worldview are now a shrinking minority. As mainstream culture grows more hostile toward the Bible’s truths and those who embrace them, you’ll face mounting pressures — from family, friends, media, academia, and government — to change and even abandon your beliefs. But these challenges also create abundant opportunities to stand strong for Christ and shine light to those hurt by the darkness of our day.
In Faithfully Different, author and apologist Natasha Crain shares how you can live out your faith with conviction, discernment, and courage. You’ll be equipped to:
* Identify and respond to today’s most significant worldview pressures, such as cancel culture, secular social justice, progressive Christianity, deconstruction, virtue signaling, and more.
* Engage effectively with a world that ridicules biblical truths.
* Defend your faith from misguided influences and live as a bold witness for the Lord.
As the standards of our day mutate and devolve, Faithfully Different will give you the insight and encouragement you need to believe, think, and live biblically no matter what you face in these turbulent times.
Check out the important Unchaken conference, hosted by Natasha Crain, Alisa Childers, and Frank Turek.
Natasha’s podcast is powerful, and a great way to learn more about the Biblical worldview.…

Mind Change March 2023
28 februari 2023 · 39 min
It's Mind Change March! Lees meer
Hey, it’s almost March 1. We’re going to call it “Mind Change March,” and we’re going to make sure that every single day in this month, we’re going to press deeper into changing the things we need to change to get where we want to be in our lives. No more wasted time. No more regrets. 31 days from now we’ll be smarter, richer, wiser, fitter, closer to God and others, and we will be much better self-brain surgeons.
I have a question for you: are you tired? I don’t mean sleepy. I mean, you’re looking around on social media and you see that everyone else seems to have it all together, but you can’t get a job or find your keys or the rent is due or your relationship is on the rocks. Or instead of having two of the best months ever to start 2021, you not only didn’t keep your resolutions, but you can’t even remember them. And you’re just so tired of it all? Like instead of Jump Start January and Fabulous February, you had “Just like last January,” and “Failed Again February?”
Well, you’re not alone. I’m hearing a lot from people all over the place who are just so tired of being stuck and they don’t know how to change it.
Guess what friend? It’s going to be okay.
It’s mind change March, friend. And we’re going to start today.
Scriptures from my friend Clay (you need to get you some promises too, friend!):
Hebrews 6:18
God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 73:23-26
23 Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Reconstructed, with Philip Yancey (Self-Brain Surgery Saturday)
25 februari 2023 · 48 min
Philip Yancey has been a great friend and mentor for me for years. Lees meer
His books have helped millions of us search out the path to faith and hope again after life brings us pain. He’s one of the first people who gets a call when something terrible happens- Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Columbine- because he helps people honestly answer the questions such tragedies provoke, and to find hope again.
Philip was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a variety of issues with postural control, balance, steadiness and speed of movement, tremor, and other issues. And all those years of helping others look into their troubles and hold onto faith have prepared him for his own.
This talk covers a lot of ground, from deconstruction to chronic illness, evil and suffering, church abuse, to finding strength in the community of the church.
It’s inspiring, encouraging, and it will help you hold on, no matter what is happening in your life.
Be sure to check out drleewarren.substack.com for more!
My four all-time favorite Philip Yancey books:
* Where the Light Fell: A Memoir is Philip’s intensely personal story of how he rebuilt his faith from the ashes of years of church abuse and the discovery of a family secret that devastated him. Incredible. I highly recommend the audiobook!
* Where is God When it Hurts?
* What’s So Amazing About Grace?
* The Jesus I Never Knew
