Darwin Has a Molecule Problem, with Dr. Michael Behe (Self-Brain Surgery Saturday)
13 april 2024 · 1 uur
It's Self-Brain Surgery Saturday! Lees meer
We're all taught in school that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution explains how we got here. But the truth is, modern molecular biology continues to struggle to prove even the most basic elements of that idea. Survival of the fittest is an obvious truth, but survival does not explain arrival, and since Watson and Crick gave us the molecular structure of DNA in the 1950's, the picture has become more and more bleak for the Darwinists.
My guest today is Dr. Michael Behe. He is a biochemist from Lehigh University, and his incredible book is Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution.
From Amazon.com:
Naming Darwin's Black Box to the National Review's list of the 100 most important nonfiction works of the 20th century, George Gilder wrote that it "overthrows Darwin at the end of the 20th century in the same way that quantum theory overthrew Newton at the beginning".
Discussing the book in the New Yorker in May 2005, H. Allen Orr said of Behe, "He is the most prominent of the small circle of scientists working on intelligent design, and his arguments are by far the best known." From one end of the spectrum to the other, Darwin's Black Box has established itself as the key text in the Intelligent Design movement - the one argument that must be addressed in order to determine whether Darwinian evolution is sufficient to explain life as we know it, or not.
For this edition, Behe has written a major new Afterword tracing the state of the debate in the decade since it began. It is his first major new statement on the subject and will be welcomed by the thousands who wish to continue this intense debate.

This conversation covers a lot of ground- clinical psychiatry, the perils of depression and weariness, the role of medications, the devastation and risk factors for suicide, faith, the importance of community, and much more.

There’s hope for greater satisfaction, purpose and joy in your life, even if circumstances have you down….
Stanford-trained psychiatrist David Carreon, MD, reveals what it takes to move from nagging disappointment, dissatisfaction, or depression to a life of thriving. One of the pioneers of the use of an intense form of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in severely depressed patients, Dr. Carreon was astonished by how quickly and dramatically most of them recovered. But he also saw very clearly that just eliminating the symptoms of depression wasn't enough. To live a truly fulfilling life, his patients needed to leave old habits behind and embrace the patterns of flourishing. In The Opposite of Depression, he draws on insights from his clinical experience, the latest research, and his Christian faith to point readers to principles and practices that promote thriving in mind, body and soul. Each chapter offers practical steps readers can take to star… -

Break Free from Self-Doubt with Leanne Ellington
1 april 2024 · 42 min
It's Mind Change Monday, and Leanne Ellington is going to help us jump into Action April! Lees meer
Leeanne Ellington has an incredible story of chasing healing through silence, and finding God in the process.
In her own words, she describes her faith journey:
Picture this: a skeptical, bacon-loving, Hebrew-speaking Jew, embarking on a quest to explore faith after a transformative 100-pound weight loss and a series of "quarter-life crisis".
It began with a whisper in my heart: "I think I might want God?!"
But not wanting to go back to the old days of temple and rabbi sermons, I found a non-denominational church in vibrant Nashville, TN that turned into a miraculous journey that filled a void in my spiritual landscape and met ME in my skepticism, doubt, and curiosity in all aspects of life.
All of a sudden this "God guy" that everyone ELSE was talking about that I had never met, and frankly never cared to meet…
...suddenly appeared to ME --and revealed, completed, and healed parts of my story I didn't even know needed attention.
Leanne has two incredible podcasts, What's God Got to Do With It? and Outweigh. She is an online coach and guide into applying neuroscience and faith to healing from body image and self-esteem issues, and we had an incredible talk.

Trauma Rounds: Stuck

Trauma Rounds: Stuck Lees meer
Tina Tisdale is a Character in My New Book
She is a real person, with enough details changed to protect her family’s privacy. She had a problem that wouldn’t go away, and it forced her to make some decisions that were tragic.
From Tina’s story, we learn the critical importance of learning to accept the reality that God doesn’t always answer our prayers the way we think he should. It’s about faith and doubt, and acceptance.
There’s a little bit of Tina in all of us, but we can learn from her how to change our minds to become healthier, feel better, and be happier.

The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery (Mind Change Monday)
4 maart 2024 · 25 min
It's Mind Change Monday! Lees meer
I've received many requests for a new presentation of The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery. So, here they are! As I write my next book, tentatively titled Self-Brain Surgery: How to Rewire Your Brain, Reorder Your Mind, and Radically Transform Your Life, these may change or reorder a little as I determine the best way to work them into a format that will fit nicely into book form. But here they are, which is a perfect way to start Mind Change March! These ten principles will help you become healthier, feel better, and be happier in your life.
The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery (Note: These have been modestly revised as my new book is taking shape; here is the list as it will appear in the book, although in this episode they are slightly different):
—I must relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise.
—I must believe that feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in my brain.
—I must believe that most of my automatic thoughts are untrue.
—I must believe that my brain is designed to heal.
—I must love tomorrow more than I hate how I feel right now.
—I must stop making an operation out of everything.
—I must not perpetuate generational thought or behavioral issues in my family, or start any new ones.
—I must love my brain and live in such a way as to improve it.
—I must believe that I’m getting better at what I’m doing.
—I must understand that thoughts become things.
Scripture: Romans 12:1-2, II Corinthians 10:5, Philippians 4:6-8, Ephesians 4, II Peter 1:3

Emotions, Thoughts, and a Reason for Sadness, with Jennie Allen (Frontal Lobe Friday)

It's Frontal Lobe Friday! Lees meer
Today, a look at the interplay between feelings and thoughts, a part of your brain called the corpus striatum, the importance of tonically active neurons, and a conversation with Jennie Allen!
"Don't Let Your Emotions Get the Best of You."
We've all heard it, but is it sound advice? Jennie Allen is on the podcast today to talk about her new book, Untangle Your Emotions: Naming What You Feel and Knowing What to Do About It.
Plus: the story of how Jennie Allen is directly responsible for Lisa and me moving from Alabama to Wyoming to Nebraska!
This is a powerful talk about what I believe will be one of the most important books of 2024.
From Amazon.com:
The New York Times bestselling author of Get Out of Your Head provides a revolutionary path to embracing a healthy relationship with your emotions, one that leads to life-giving connection with God and others as well as to a richer understanding of yourself.
“This book is worth thousands of dollars of counseling.”—Jonathan Pokluda, bestselling author and host of the Becoming Something podcast
How often have you heard, “Don’t let your emotions get the best of you”? But what if instead of ignoring our feelings, we noticed them, named them, and let God use them to draw us closer to Himself and others?
Many of us need to unlearn damaging messages about our emotions. We’ve been taught, for example, that emotions are untrustworthy, when, in fact, God can use them to help us see where we need His healing.
In Untangle Your Emotions, Jennie Allen uses scientific research, biblical insight, and her own story to help you
● exchange stuffing, dismissing, or minimizing your emotions for a five-step process to know what you feel and what to do about it
● debunk the myth that feelings are sinful by learning how emotional maturity leads to deeper connection with God and others
● live emotionally healthy by applying biblical wisdom and therapeutic research that works whether you self-identify as “…

Four Ways to Operate Your Brain: Which One is Best? (Part I)
12 februari 2024 · 27 min
It's Mind Change Monday! Lees meer
You spend your entire life performing self-brain surgery, whether you do it intentionally or not. This is the biggest single realization of my life, and it should produce a desire in us to make sure we're competent and effective as self-brain surgeons. Because your mind is operating on your brain every moment of your life, either passively or actively.
What you're doing, you're getting better at. So do you want to be getting better at using your mind and brain the way God designed them, or letting other things (past traumas, tragedies, other people, circumstances, or simply thought negligence) direct the way your brain is formed?
Today, we're going to look at the four different ways we can operate our brains, and which one we should be trying to master.
Scripture: II Corinthians 10:5 (take captive), Romans 12:2 (transform), Ephesians 4:13-19 (Gentile mind), I Corinthians 2:16 (Mind of Christ), Philippians 4:6-8

It's Self-Brain Surgery Saturday! Lees meer
Sometimes the wound is so fresh or so persistent that you don't have the energy or mental capability to even try to change your mind. You're overwhelmed and it's all just too fresh and heavy, and it doesn't feel possible to do anything but hurt.
If you're there, it's okay. Here's one little tool that will help you hold on until you heal enough to start seeing the light again, and the hope that is found in patience and waiting.
Here's what to do when you don't know what to do.
