Book Vs. Movie: “He’s Just Not That Into You” The 2004 Liz Tuccillo & Greg Behrendt Book Vs the 2009 Jennifer Aniston FilmPicture it: the Sex and the City writer’s room. Writers Liz Tuccillo & Greg Behrendt overhear a female coworker asking for relationship advice (at work, but that’s another issue for another time) about guy she’s been seeing. After hearing a litany of red flags, Behrendt pipes up with, “He’s just not that into you.” And thus was born an empire. It’s the quip that became an episode on a hit HBO show that became a bestselling, Oprah-featured, self-help book that became a movie. Goldfinger (1964) Ian Fleming, Sean Connery, Gert Frobe & Honor Blackman
21 juli 2025 · 1 uur 10 min
Book Vs. Movie: “Goldfinger”
The 1959 Ian Fleming Novel Vs the 1964 Sean Connery Film Lees meerIan Fleming’s Goldfinger (1959) and its 1964 film adaptation featuring Sean Connery present one of James Bond’s most iconic villains, but in very different styles. The novel is a gritty Cold War spy thriller, showcasing a vulnerable Bond who relies on his wits rather than gadgets. Goldfinger’s scheme centers on a traditional gold heist from Fort Knox, with Pussy Galore leading a lesbian criminal gang, creating a darker tone.
In contrast, the film, directed by Guy Hamilton, turns the story into flashy pop entertainment. Goldfinger's plan involves irradiating gold with a dirty bomb, and Pussy is reimagined as a glamorous pilot who falls in love with Bond. Connery’s 007 is suave and nearly invincible, complete with a gadget-loaded Aston Martin DB5.Between the novel and the movie, which did the Margos like better? Have a listen to find out!
In this episode, the Margos discuss:

Alice's Restaurant (1969) Arlo Guthrie, Arthur Penn, Pat Quinn, & James Broderick
1 juli 2025 · 1 uur 11 min
Book Vs. Movie: “Alice’s Restaurant”
Arlo Guthrie’s 1967 18-minute Song Vs the 1969 Movie Lees meerArlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” is an 18-minute satirical folk monologue and song that became an anthem for the 1960s counterculture. Officially titled “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” it was released in 1967 on his debut album. The piece tells a true, albeit embellished, story from Thanksgiving 1965 about a littering arrest that prevented Guthrie from being drafted into the Vietnam War. Blending comedy and protest, the song critiques authority and the military draft system, recounting how disposing of garbage with a friend led to an arrest, which ironically disqualified him from military service.
In this episode, the Margos discuss:
The career of Arlo Guthrie
The story behind the song

"Pride and Prejudice" & 2022's "Fire Island" Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Margaret Cho & Jane Austen
22 juni 2025 · 1 uur 24 min
Book Vs. Movie: For Pride Month Lees meer
1813’s “Pride and Prejudice” Vs. 2022's "Fire Island"
June is Pride Month worldwide, and the Margos are excited to celebrate with some of the best LGBTQIA-centric books and movies. One highlight is the 2022 film *Fire Island*, directed by Andrew Ahn and written by Joel Kim Booster. This clever and heartfelt adaptation reimagines Jane Austen’s *Pride and Prejudice*. Set during a weeklong summer vacation on the iconic queer retreat of Fire Island, the story follows a close-knit group of gay friends as they navigate romance, class, and identity. Joel Kim Booster plays Noah, a modern-day Elizabeth Bennet figure, while Bowen Yang portrays Howie, who is loosely based on Jane Bennet. The aloof and wealthy Will, played by Conrad Ricamora, serves as the counterpart to Mr. Darcy.
Between the classic Austen book and the modern, gay-friendly film, which did we prefer? Have a listen to find out!
In this episode, the Margos discuss:
The sheer number of Pride Month books we have covered and how they have changed over the last ten years
The history of Austen and Fire Island.

Book Vs. Movie: The Mirror Crack’d
The 1962 Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 1980 Movie Lees meerWhen Agatha Christie published The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side in 1962, it was a haunting tale of guilt, glamour, and murder set in the seemingly quiet village of St. Mary Mead. Nearly two decades later, Hollywood brought the story to life with an all-star cast in the 1980 film adaptation simply titled The Mirror Crack’d.
Heather Badcock at a charity fête hosted by the famous film actress Marina Gregg. The drink was meant for Marina, but someone else paid the price. With classic Christie flair, Miss Jane Marple quietly unravels a decades-old motive involving trauma, maternal grief, and a long-buried secret.

Book Vs. Movie: See How They Run
The 1947 Agatha Christie Play (Three Blind Mice) Vs the 2022 Sam Rockwell Film Lees meerAgatha Christie’s radio play Three Blind Mice was introduced in 1947 and was the basis for 1952’s The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in theater history.
See How They Run (2022) is a clever, stylish murder mystery set in 1950s London. It blends classic whodunit tropes with a witty, self-referential twist. Directed by Tom George, the film follows world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) as they investigate the backstage murder of a Hollywood director who was set to adapt Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap for the screen.

Harper Valley PTA (1978) Barbara Eden, Ronny Cox, Nanette Fabray, Tom T. Hall & Jeannie C. Riley
19 mei 2025 · 56 min
Book Vs Movie: “Harper Valley PTA"
The 1968 Song Vs the 1978 Movie (really!) Lees meer(It's one of our favorite episodes from the past!) The song was written by Tom T. Hall and performed by country singer Jeannie C. Riley in 1968. The story about a “widowed bride” who is slut-shamed by her daughter’s junior high school PTA (Parents Teachers Advisory) and gives a takedown at a meeting that is spectacular in its shade and incisiveness was one of the first feminist anthems and managed to become a number one hit in the U.S. on both the pop and country charts. (Past episode, Dolly Parton did the same in 1980 for 9 to 5!)
The 1978 movie is an R-rated cuckoo bananas production starring Barbara Eden (a stone-cold fox!) as Stella Johnson, who exacts a Porky’s style revenge on the local yokels who dare to take her on. She is also wooed by an equally sexy Ronny Cox and is teamed up with Nanette Fabray in this film that played in drive-in theaters in 1978 and made millions. It features nudity, wrap dresses, elephants, revenge porn, makeovers, and a helicopter proposal. So, between the song and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!

11 mei 2025 · 1 uur 21 min
Book Vs. Movie: Death on the Nile Lees meer
The 1937 Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 2022 Kenneth Branagh film. Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile has long been a fan favorite, combining romance, betrayal, and murder aboard a glamorous steamer cruising the Nile River. In 2022, director Kenneth Branagh brought the classic mystery back to the big screen with an all-star cast and a modern flair. But how faithful is this adaptation to the original 1937 novel?
Branagh (who returns as Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot) updates the cast of characters from the source material and discusses the racial politics of the time more. The director also adds to Poirot's backstory, including his facial hair and past romances, which are not in the book. Between the original novel and the film — did we prefer one over the other? Have a listen to find out!

Agatha Christie's "Evil Under the Sun" (1981) Maggie Smith, Peter Ustinov, Diana Rigg & Roddy McDowall
4 mei 2025 · 1 uur 17 min
Book Vs. Movie: Evil Under the Sun
The Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 1982 Film Lees meerAgatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun (1941) is a masterclass in misdirection and suspense. The 1982 film adaptation, directed by Guy Hamilton and featuring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot, transforms the story into a glamorous whodunit set in a sun-soaked Mediterranean locale. Both versions center around the murder of actress Arlena Stuart at a resort, with Poirot reluctantly drawn into the investigation, uncovering secrets among the guests, each with a motive. While the book is set on a secluded Devon island during World War II, featuring a more introspective tone, the film opts for colorful costumes and picturesque settings, filmed in Mallorca. Poirot in the book is sharp and formal, while Ustinov’s portrayal is warmer and more humorous, appealing to some fans for its charm and theatricality.

Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) Kim Richards, Ike Eisenmann, Ray Milland, Eddie Albert, & Alexander H. Key
28 april 2025 · 1 uur 6 min
Book Vs. Movie: Escape to Witch Mountain
The 1968 Children’s Sci-Fi Novel Vs the 1975 Disney Classic Lees meerIf you grew up watching Disney movies or browsing old-school sci-fi paperbacks, chances are Escape to Witch Mountain is somewhere in your memory. But did you know the 1975 Disney movie is very different from the 1968 novel it’s based on? Let’s take a look at how Alexander Key’s book compares to its big-screen adaptation. Alexander Key’s Escape to Witch Mountain is a surprisingly serious story for a children's book. It follows orphaned siblings Tony and Tia, who possess strange psychic abilities — Tony can move objects with his harmonica music, and Tia communicates with animals and speaks telepathically. As they dodge sinister adults who want to exploit them, they slowly uncover the truth: they're aliens stranded on Earth. The book delves into deeper themes, including prejudice, the fear of outsiders, and the desperate search for a sense of belonging.
There is a strong sense of melancholy running through the story, and while the ending offers hope, it is also mysterious and bittersweet. It feels less like a fairy tale and more like a poignant sci-fi fable. The 1975 Disney adaptation is much lighter, precisely what you’d expect from a family-friendly studio in the '70s. Between the play and the film — did we prefer one over the other? Have a listen to find out! In this episode, the Margos discuss:
Disney live-action films of the 1970s

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) William Shakespeare, Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, & Letters to Cleo!
14 april 2025 · 1 uur 7 min
Book Vs. Movie: 10 Things I Hate About You
The Taming of the Shrew & the 1999 Heath Ledger Film Lees meer10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, reimagining the story in a high school setting. In both works, the plot revolves around two sisters—one desirable and another perceived as problematic. In The Taming of the Shrew, the younger, more attractive Bianca cannot marry until her older, strong-willed sister, Katherina, finds a husband. Similarly, in 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford can only date if her rebellious, sharp-tongued sister, Kat, does too. The character of Petruchio in Shakespeare’s play, who is hired to "tame" Katherina and make her marriageable, is mirrored in Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), who is paid to date Kat (Julia Stiles) so that Bianca can start dating.
Despite the initial financial motivation, Petruchio and Patrick develop genuine feelings for their partners. While The Taming of the Shrew ends with Katherina seemingly submitting to societal expectations, 10 Things I Hate About You gives Kat more agency. She remains independent but opens up to love, showing a more modern and feminist take on Shakespeare’s story.

Gypsy (1962) Gypsy Rose Lee, June Havoc, Ethel Merman, Natalie Wood, & Rosalind Russell
10 maart 2025 · 1 uur 41 min
Book Vs. Movie:
Gypsy
The 1957 Memoir Vs. the 1962 Movie
“Musicals in March!” Lees meerThe Margos celebrate another “Musicals in March” episode with Gypsy. Gypsy Rose Lee’s 1957 memoir tells her real-life story of growing up in vaudeville and burlesque under the domineering influence of her mother, Rose Hovick. It paints a detailed picture of her childhood alongside her more naturally talented younger sister, June (later June Havoc), and how Gypsy (born Louise Hovick) eventually became the most famous burlesque performer of her time. The book is witty and self-deprecating and offers an unvarnished yet entertaining look at her complex relationship with her mother.
The movie Gypsy is based on the successful 1959 Broadway musical by Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents, rather than directly on the memoir. It follows the same structure as the stage show, focusing on Rose Hovick’s relentless push to make her daughters stars, culminating in Gypsy’s rise to fame. However, because it was a Hollywood film, it softened some of the grittier aspects of Gypsy’s story.
So, which version did we prefer? Have a listen to find out!In this ep, the Margos discuss:

Wicked
The 2004 Musical Vs. the 2024 Movie
"Musicals in March" Lees meerThe "Wicked" movie is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West; the book (for the play) was written by Winnie Holzman, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The show had its initial tryout in San Francisco in 2003 before moving to Broadway, where it has enjoyed a successful two-decade run despite receiving mixed reviews.
This success is primarily attributed to its loyal fan base. Part One concludes with the iconic song "Defying Gravity," setting the stage for Part Two, which explores the consequences of Elphaba’s rebellion. The film utilizes CGI and elaborate sets to vividly portray the magical world of Oz in ways that the stage cannot replicate.

Book Vs. Movie: Meet John Doe
The 1922 Short Story Vs. the 1941 Film Lees meerFrank Capra’s 1941 film *Meet John Doe* is often described as “based on a story by Richard Connell and Robert Presnell.” Unlike Connell’s famous short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the source material for *Meet John Doe* was based on a short story, “A Reputation,” which appeared in 1922 in Century Magazine. The original work and the final film critique how newspapers—and media moguls—shape public sentiment for their own purposes. Starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, the film was a significant box office success and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Story, with Capra opting for a more hopeful ending than the original.

Book Vs. Movie: Convoy
The CW McCall Novelty Song Vs. the Sam Peckinpah (!) Film Lees meerIn the mid-1970s, a unique country song about truckers, CB radios, and the open road captured the imagination of America. It was called "Convoy," and it not only topped the charts but also inspired a Hollywood movie, solidifying its place in pop culture history. Initially a novelty tune, it evolved into a cultural phenomenon. The song was written and performed by C.W. McCall, the alter ego of ad man Bill Fries, in collaboration with musician Chip Davis, who later founded Mannheim Steamroller. "Convoy" rode the wave of the CB radio craze that swept through the U.S. during the 1970s. The song's immense success attracted Hollywood's attention, and soon, the story of "Rubber Duck" made its way to the big screen. The movie, directed by Sam Peckinpah, known for his gritty and violent Westerns such as The Wild Bunch and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, added a dramatic twist to the whimsical narrative. Travels with My Aunt (1972) Maggie Smith, George Cukor, Louis Gossett Jr, and George Cukor
11 november 2024 · 1 uur 8 min
Book Vs. Movie: Travels with My Aunt
The 1969 Graham Greene Novel Vs. the 1972 Maggie Smith Film Lees meerThe Margos pack their suitcases for Graham Greene’s Travels with My Aunt and its 1972 film adaptation. The story of Henry Pulling, a reserved Englishman, whose life changes when his eccentric Aunt Augusta leads him on an adventurous journey across Europe. Greene explores the novel's themes of self-discovery, rebellion, and unconventional relationships with his signature dark humor. Augusta’s vibrant, morally ambiguous character makes Henry question his life choices. The film, directed by George Cukor and starring Maggie Smith as Augusta, takes a lighter, comedic approach. Henry’s character becomes more of a comedic foil to Augusta, and the adaptation focuses less on Augusta’s complex past. While the movie brings energy and charm, fans of the book often feel it lacks Greene’s depth.

Book Vs. Movie: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (replay)
The 1964 Ian Fleming Novel Vs. the 1968 Classic Movie Lees meerBook vs. Movie: Chitty Chitty Bang BangThe Margos explore Ian Fleming's only children's story, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," published in October 1964, shortly after his death at 56. Written for his son Caspar, the story features characters inspired by Fleming's children and their friends, set against the backdrop of 1920s aero-engine racing carts. The tale follows Commander Caractacus Pott and his magical car, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," named for the sound it makes. The car embarks on various adventures in England and France, able to swim and fly while evading villains who kidnap children for robberies. Produced by Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, the film took liberties with the story and included music by the Sherman Brothers. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song and became a stage musical in 2002.
So, which did we like more between the original story and the 1968 adaptation?

Book Vs. Movie: The Night of the Hunter
The 1953 Novel Vs. the 1955 Classic Movie Lees meerDavis Grubb’s 1953 novel *The Night of the Hunter* and its 1955 film adaptation by Charles Laughton offer haunting interpretations of a sinister preacher, Harry Powell, and two children fleeing him. The novel delves deeper into Powell's twisted morality and religious fanaticism. At the same time, the film, featuring Robert Mitchum, presents him as a symbolic figure of evil with striking visual elements, including his "LOVE" and "HATE" tattoos. The book maintains a grounded, psychological tone, while the movie employs a surreal, expressionist style to illustrate the battle between good and evil. Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? The Fly (1986) Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, & David Cronenberg (Special Guest: Patrick Bromley "F This Movie" podcast

Book Vs. Movie: The Fly
The 1957 Short Story Vs. the 1986 Movie Lees meerThe Margos feature The Fly this month with special guest Patrick Bromley, who hosts the excellent F This Movie podcast. The 1957 short story and the 1986 film share the core premise of a scientist merging with a fly during a teleportation experiment, but they have different approaches. George Langelaan's story focuses on the emotional and ethical fallout, depicting science as perilous when unchecked. David Cronenberg's adaptation emphasizes the grotesque consequences of scientific overreach, blending body horror with a profound sense of loss.
Langelaan's story explores guilt, tragedy, and the limits of science, while Cronenberg's film focuses on the horror of losing one's humanity physically and mentally. Both versions are haunting, but Cronenberg's film expands the original premise into a deeply personal horror, highlighting the darker sides of human ambition.
