The festival hosted companies from Belgium, France, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, and Spain. They performed in big tops, in a truck, on various theatre stages, and in public spaces. The program combined physical virtuosity, distinctive creative approaches, and hybrid forms, exploring not only bodies in motion but also contemporary political and social perspectives. Brusel opět rezonoval se současným cirkusem v rámci Festivalu UP. Festival trval celkem 11 dní na 12 místech v Bruselu, jehož sídlo sídlilo v okrese Molenbeek.Festival hostil soubory z Belgie, Francie, Švýcarska, Dánska, Nizozemska, Itálie, Rakouska a Španělska. Vystupovaly v šapitóch, v kamionu, na různých divadelních scénách a ve veřejných prostorách. Program kombinoval fyzickou virtuozitu, osobité tvůrčí přístupy a hybridní formy a zkoumal nejen těla v pohybu, ale i současné politické a sociální perspektivy. Co prozradí lidské srdce? Diskuze po premiéře Frekvence Bětky Tiché na festivalu Fun Fatele

Možné odpovědi hledala v průběhu čtyř let performerka a akrobatka Bětka Tichá v rámci projektu Frekvence, který měl jihlavskou premiéru na festivalu nového cirkusu Fun Fatale. Ve Frekvenci Bětka Tichá využívá technologii monitorující tělesné funkce – měří svůj srdeční tep přímo během performance na zemi, ale i při závěsné akrobacii na vertikálním laně. Data získaná z jejího těla se v reálném čase propojují se zvukem a světly, které reagují na její fyzický a duševní stav. Lees meer

Skupina People Watching, založená v roce 2020, brzy začala pracovat na představení „Play Dead“, kde zkoumá témata intimity, transformace, plynutí času a lidskosti. To vše s trochou surrealismu. Představení je jako vzít lupu a prozkoumat, jaké to je být člověkem.
Setkáváme se za horkého letního odpoledne v Letenské sadě v Praze. Nedaleko šapita, kde se představení hrálo téměř každý den po dobu dvou týdnů v cirkusové vesničce Letní Letná. V rámci oslav výročí navštívil Sorin Sirkus také CIRQUEON a naši CIRQUEON LAB. Naše dvě organizace jsou již léta propojeny prostřednictvím projektů Erasmus+ a jako členové mezinárodní sítě Caravan Circus.
Sorin Sirkus se stal jedním z předních jmen v mládežnickém cirkusu a kultuře. V jádru organizace se zaměřuje na propagaci, zachování a rozvoj cirkusu jako koníčku pro děti a mládež. Dnes je jejich cirkusová škola domovem více než 600 studentů!

If you ever take a walk through the center of Riga, you can’t miss the majestic building on Merkela Street – Riga Circus. This structure, built in 1888, is remarkable not only in Latvia or the Baltic region but across all of Europe. It’s one of the oldest surviving circus buildings on the continent. After a series of ups and downs, it was relaunched in 2017 as a state-owned enterprise. And since then, a lot has changed – a major renovation took place, and circus life returned to the space. Under the leadership of director Māra Pāvula, Riga Circus has become a major cultural hub for contemporary circus. It offers modern circus performances for audiences, as well as high-quality education – for both kids and adults. And what’s more – there’s even an international residency program for artists. Oba stojí za mezinárodním projektem CIRCUS CLINIC, ze kterého vzešla publikace v českém a anglickém jazyce. Projekt, jehož partnerem byl i CIRQUEON, zkoumal několik případů, u kterých lze nový cirkus použít k podpoře a rozvoji terapeutických procesů u dětí a mladých dospělých. Nabízí zajímavé způsoby, jak přemýšlet o cirkusu a jeho možnostech pro podporu celkové pohody prostřednictvím her, kreativity, uvědomování si vlastního těla. Firenza Guidi: The moment I stop being challenged, I stop doing circus

Magical realism, where events follow their own peculiar logic and nothing is as it seems, is characteristic of the work of the director Firenza Guidi.
Guidi is a writer-director and performance creator whose experience spans the globe. Born in Milan, Firenza left Italy in 1980 after graduating in Modern Languages from the University of Milan. She lived in Belfast until 1987 and then moved to Cardiff, Wales, which remains her home base. She has also directed numerous productions with the Welsh NoFit State Circus, including Bianco and Sabotage, which was performed at the Letní Letná festival in Prague. In 2017, Firenza Guidi directed the opening performance at Letní Letná, titled Bestiario. This time, she returns to the Czech Republic to collaborate with Losers Cirque Company at Divadlo Bravo in Prague. In her premiere production Cizinec (The Stranger), she aims to push performers out of their comfort zones to uncover the hidden scars of their souls. Roman Škadra: Jako žongléra mě na kettlebellech zaujala jejich „nežonglovatelnost“

Kettlebelly jsou těžké předměty, které připomínají dělovou kouli s rukojetí. Kromě původního účelu, kterým bylo vážení plodin, jsou pevně spjaty s kulturou posilování a používali je vojáci nebo atleti. Předmět, který se za posledních několik set let stal symbolem síly, dostává v inscenaci Girevik Romana Škadry nový rozměr. Inscenace Girevik vznikla v rámci rezidenčního programu CIRQUEONu a premiéru měla 13. února 2024 v rámci CIRKOPOLIS festivalu. Lees meer
Roman Škadra je slovenský žonglér a cirkusový tvůrce, který v současnosti působí v Berlíně. Vystudoval geografii na Univerzitě Komenského v Bratislavě a v roce 2012 absolvoval školení v oboru současného cirkusu na berlínské škole Die Etage. V jeho umělecké tvorbě se prolínají různé techniky, které zkoumají vztah mezi tělem a objektem. V posledních letech se jeho praxe posunula od žonglování k manipulaci s těžkými předměty.

Besides their original purpose of weighing crops, they are firmly associated with the culture of strength training and have been used by soldiers or athletes. Over the past few centuries, an object that has become a symbol of strength is given a new dimension in Roman Škadra's production "Girevik." Adéla Jordáková vystudovala fyzioterapii na 2.LF v Motole a působí jako fyzioterapeut zejména u tanečníků (balet ND) a cirkusových umělců. Aktivně se vzdělává v taneční a cirkusové medicíně a přednáší v ČR i v zahraničí (HAMU, INAC, SKH). Má za sebou také roční studijní pobyt na cirkusové škole SKH ve Švédsku, kde se věnovala především vertikálnímu lanu. Lecture by Barbora Adolfová on the "young voice" in circusThe CIRQUEON Library organized another lecture, this time on the topic "How to Connect Academic Research and Practice in Circus?" The main speaker, producer, and researcher Barbora Adolfová, shared her experiences and insights from the field of social circus. Barbora Adolfová encountered young and social circus at CIRQUEON in 2010, which eventually led to her doctoral studies at DAMU, a Fulbright scholarship at Pennsylvania State University in the USA, and most recently to her work in Brussels, where she coordinates the international network of young and social circus, Caravan Circus Network, since January 2024.

The international, interdisciplinary research project Circus and its Others presents its fourth edition. The fourth international conference on Circus and its Others will take place in Bogotá, Colombia, from 28 February to 3 March. It will be co-organised by Charles R. Batson (Union College), Karen Fricker (Brock University) and Olga Lucia Sorzano (Artemotion, Colombia, University College Dublin, Ireland). And the Achura Karpa festival is produced by the core conference team. Circus and its Others aims to explore the ways in which contemporary circus artists and companies engage with concepts of difference, otherness and alterity in their practice. What are the contemporary challenges facing the field, and what characterises the community of people who have dedicated themselves to circus research? And how has this research evolved over the past ten years? A few days before the start of the conference in Bogotá, I spoke to Charles R. Filip Zahradnický and Clémence de Felice: How to attract children attention in contemporary circus?

Sweedish Kompani Giraff creates visual and circus performances with a passion for magic in everyday life situations. It´s shows are based on young people's perspectives and the trust in children's ability to absorb complex subjects’ issues. Internationally the company has performed in China, America, France and other parts of the world. In November 2023 presented a new performance The Goldberg variations at Jatka78 in Prague. The performance refers to both the symmetrical piece of music by Johann Sebastian Bach and to the cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who is known for his drawings of incredibly complex, chaotic machines made out of everyday objects. The director magician Axel Adlercreutz engaged two artists – the Czech juggler Filip Zahradnický and French acrobat Clémence de Felice who I interviewed after one of their performances at Jatka78. Reinventing Circus Organizations III – Coraggio: Pioneering New Frontiers in Honest Communication

It was the founders' desire to explore uncharted territories, such as training people in honest communication, that led to the creation of Coraggio – Die Kulturanstifter, an association for cultural education based in Berlin. Focused on the performing arts encompassing circus, theatre, dance, and music, Coraggio embraces a holistic approach to education, fostering the participation of children, young people and adults in cultural, social, and political spheres.
As one of the four organizations that joined the transformative Reinventing Circus Organizations project, one of Coraggio's founders, Anne Timm, and her colleague Francesco Procopio, aimed to revolutionize their approach. A meeting in Stockholm, hosted at the Cirkus Cirkör base, served as a pivotal moment in their Reinventing Circus Organizations journey.

Collectif Malunés: We were creating and performing since ever

Two brothers, Simon and Vincent Bruynickx from French-belgian Collectif Malunès, brought a show called BITBYBIT to Letní Letná 2023. The artpiece is their way to explore and share their unique brother bond and creative relationship. Its not only interesting because of the alignment of two brothers or the work with tension throughout an hour piece. They shocked the audience mainly by rediscovering an old circus technique of teeth hanging - but there’s more to it than just using the jaw. Growing up near the famous belgian Circus Ronaldo, where the magic happened, as Vincent and Simon say, they were always inspired by connecting the old with contemporary, and in BITBYBIT the do just that - in their own way. Tomáš Václavek, původem ze Slovenska, tvoří spolu s Davidem Diezem Mendezem úspěšné cirkusové duo Lapso cirk, které sídlí v Barceloně. Podařilo se jim tam uspět, což je podle Tomáše výjimka, protože dělají něco, v čem jsou nejlepší – a jediní – na světě. Tomáš Václavek: We are the best in the world at what we do. And the only one, says Tomáš from the duo Lapso CirkTomáš Václavek, originally from Slovakia, forms together with David Diez Mendez the successful cirkus duo Lapso cirk, which is based in Barcelona. They managed to succeed there which, according to Tomáš, is an exception. They are doing something in which they are the best – and only – in the world. They brought their first OVVIO production to this year's edition of Cirkuff in Trutnov, where we talked about the creation of the duo, who speak Italian together, but also about Tomáš's journey to the circus. The professional one did not start until the age of 25 and continued by graduating from the prestigious Swedish DOCH. Plzeňský Žongléros ansámbl se začal formovat z fotbalistů, kteří coby spolužáci na střední škole objevili pojky na žonglování. Od dob, kdy vystupovali na firemních akcích a maturitních večírcích vyrostli v soubor, který v Plzni vybudoval vlastní prostor, pořádá každoroční festival, tvoří autorské inscenace a učí děti v kurzech i příměstských táborech. Principál souboru Jiří Misař se spolu s dalšími členy snaží Plzeňákům ukázat krásu nového cirkusu. Doufá, že jeho děti půjdou jednou v jeho stopách. Žongléros ensemble from Pilsen began to form from football players who - as classmates in high school - discovered the art of juggling. Since the days they started performing at the events and graduation parties they have grown into an ensemble that has built its own space in Pilsen, organizes an annual festival, creates original productions and teaches children in courses and suburban camps. Kateřina Vaněčková je akrobatka, lektorka a zakladatelka BudeCirkus v Českých Budějovicích. Když se Katka stěhovala z Prahy do Budějovic, rozhodla se vzít si svou vášeň k cirkusu s sebou. Kateřina Vaněčková is an acrobat, lecturer and founder of BudeCirkus organisation in České Budějovice. When Kateřina moved from Prague to České Budějovice she decided to take her passion for the circus with her. Since there was no place in Budějovice where she could devote herself to it she founded it herself. This is how the BudeCirkus gradually came into being. It offers circus courses for children and for adults. What challenges does her center currently face? And what role do her teen students play in all this? Claudio Stellato: I need chaos in the creation

Claudio Stellato is a multidisciplinary artist. He started his artistic career as a jazz musician in Milan while working as a street artist. Then he travelled and trained for several years in theatre and circus in different countries. In February 2022 at the Cirkopolis festival he presented one of his project called Work, a physical performance where every physical effort is pushed to the limit of exhaustion and leads to an absurd result. In autumne 2022 Claudio Stellato is back in Prague as a leader of the Circus Next Laboratory organised by Cirqueon center for contemporary circus. What should be the content of a circus laboratory in the 21st century? What does the circus tradition mean to young circus performers and to what extent does the circus become just a concept?
