  1. Bitches Brew by Miles Davis

    20 november 2025 · 32 min

    Afspelen
Released in 1970, this double album didn’t just push the limits of jazz; it obliterated them. Bitches Brew is a chaotic, electrifying, and hypnotic masterpiece, fusing jazz, rock, funk, and avant-garde into something utterly transformative. Lees meer

  2. Back To Black by Amy Winehouse

    13 november 2025 · 50 min

    Afspelen
There are many reasons this album endures, but one is very much Winehouse’s voice. It was idiosyncratic in the way that all the truly great voices are idiosyncratic — immediately recognisable, impossible to replicate, full of an apparently untutored directness that made every sentiment feel raw. Lees meer

However, what is easy to overlook, because the voice is so commanding, is just how well-constructed the album is as a piece of songwriting. Back to Black is not a collection of confessional dispatches loosely hung together. It is a coherent emotional journey — from defiance to regret to resignation to a kind of hard-won clarity — delivered across just over 35 minutes without a wasted note. It is an exceptionally forlorn record, and yet it never becomes oppressive, because the arrangements are so alive, and because Winehouse's wit keeps surfacing at precisely the moments when self-pity threatens to take over.

  3. Blue by Joni Mitchell

    6 november 2025 · 54 min

    Afspelen
What distinguishes Blue from other confessional albums of its era is Mitchell's refusal to simplify her emotions. She embraced what she called "chords of inquiry"— suspended chords that carried inherent questions, that never quite resolved. This musical ambiguity matched her emotional state and rtistic vision. Mitchell wasn't interested in neat conclusions or redemptive arcs. She wanted to capture the contradictions of being human: loving someone while needing to leave them, craving connection while cherishing solitude, feeling bitter and sweet simultaneously. The album exists in these in-between spaces, comfortable with uncertainty in a way that felt revolutionary, particularly for a woman in 1971. Lees meer

  4. Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen

    30 oktober 2025 · 45 min

    Afspelen
Nebraska arrived at a time when the music industry was chasing bigger sounds and brighter production, but Springsteen went the other way. The album’s quiet power came from its restraint. Drawing on the folk traditions of Woody Guthrie and the fatalistic laments of Hank Williams, Nebraska stripped the myth of the American dream down to its bones. These were stories of debt, violence and fragile hope — told not with anger, but with empathy. It was a portrait of a country running out of road, sung by a man searching for redemption amid the wreckage. Lees meer

  5. Odelay by Beck

    23 oktober 2025 · 48 min

    Afspelen
What made Odelay a classic rather than simply an impressive album was the tension at its heart. On the surface, it seemed almost aggressively carefree — a sonic playground where nothing was too weird to include and nothing was taken too seriously. But underneath the irony and the playfulness was genuine emotional weight. Beck sang about gods and devils, about numbness and decay, about being more dead than alive. Lees meer

He just chose to gussy it up, to wrap existential anxiety in party music, to smuggle real feeling into songs that sounded, at first, like elaborate jokes. That duality — the sardonic surface masking something earnest underneath — is what made the record so endlessly re-listenable. You could enjoy it as a collection of fantastic hooks, or you could listen closer and find something stranger and more human.

  6. Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson

    16 oktober 2025 · 57 min

    Afspelen
Red Headed Stranger is a concept album built around an old murder ballad Nelson remembered from his days as a radio disc jockey in Fort Worth and he interwove this dark story with carefully chosen country standards and original material. It sounds like a story told around a campfire, yet it feels timeless, even modern, in its emotional intelligence. It asks for attention and patience, and it rewards both with something rare: a record that feels intimate and epic at the same time. Lees meer

  7. Horses by Patti Smith

    9 oktober 2025 · 47 min

    Afspelen
Patti Smith’s Horses, released 50 years ago today, remains one of the most startling and transformative debuts in rock history. Half a century on, it still feels raw, defiant, and ahead of its time, a record that blurred the lines between poetry, performance art, and primal rock and roll. Smith showed that rock could be intellectual without being pretentious, mystical without being escapist, feminine without being weak. Lees meer

  8. Elephant by The White Stripes

    2 oktober 2025 · 50 min

    Afspelen
What made Elephant special was the way it expanded the band’s world without losing their raw simplicity. The record moves easily between blistering rock, haunting acoustic moments and playful experimentation, yet it never feels anything less than elemental — two musicians pushing a deliberately limited setup to its absolute limits. And of course, it introduced one of the most recognisable riffs of the 21st century — but Elephant is more than just one iconic track. It’s the sound of a band reaching the peak of its powers, proving that rock and roll didn’t need to be complicated, fashionable or even particularly modern to feel exciting again. Lees meer

  9. Introducing The Hardline According To ... by Terence Trent D'Arby

    25 september 2025 · 45 min

    Afspelen
Produced largely by Martyn Ware of Heaven 17, Introducing The Hardline… fused crisp ‘80s production with a deep reverence for classic R&B. It channelled the ghosts of James Brown, the finesse of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, and the theatrical edge of Prince, yet somehow never felt derivative. Critics marvelled at D’Arby’s “soul ventriloquism”, his ability to summon these influences with uncanny ease, while still sounding brand new. And the public embraced him just as quickly — the album’s run of hits, from its passionate breakout single to its chart-topping transatlantic success, turned him into a phenomenon. Lees meer

  10. Lemonade by Beyonce

    18 september 2025 · 52 min

    Afspelen
What makes Lemonade a classic rather than simply an important album is that it works on every level and all at once. As a confessional portrait of a marriage in crisis it's riveting. As a celebration of Black female strength and resilience it's genuinely moving. As a piece of sonic architecture it's endlessly rich and surprising. And as a piece of pop craftsmanship — the hooks, the production, the sheer physical pleasure of the music — it delivers everything you could ask of an album while asking far more of the listener than pop music typically does. Lees meer

Lemonade did what the very greatest records do: it expanded the idea of what a pop album could be, how much weight it could carry, how many truths it could hold at once. It took the most private possible subject matter and made it universal. It took a woman at the apex of global fame and made her feel achingly, recognisably human. It took the oldest story — betrayal, grief, forgiveness — and told it in a way that felt completely of its moment and completely timeless.

  11. Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin

    11 september 2025 · 46 min

    Afspelen
Album #4 benefits from arriving early enough in Led Zeppelin's career that they still had something to prove, but late enough that they had developed the skill and confidence to execute their vision flawlessly. There's no excess here, no self-indulgence, no sense that the band has started believing their own mythology. Instead, there's a kind of fearless creativity, a willingness to trust in beauty and subtlety even while delivering some of the heaviest music ever recorded. Lees meer

  12. Crime Of The Century by Supertramp

    8 september 2025 · 46 min

    Afspelen
What elevates Crime of the Century above a merely well-crafted album is the emotional honesty at its core. Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson were writing from real places — about alienation and thwarted dreams, about the gap between what life promises and what it delivers, about the quiet desperation of people trying to hold themselves together. These are not fashionable themes or calculated gestures toward profundity. They feel genuine, which is why they still resonate with anyone who has ever felt out of step with the world around them. 13. Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos

    4 september 2025 · 43 min

    Afspelen
What makes Little Earthquakes a classic is not any single quality but the way several qualities converge and hold their tension. Amos was classically trained, and her piano playing has the precision and command that comes from years of formal instruction. The piano on this record is always in service of something deeper: dread, longing, fury, tenderness. Lees meer

The album's most enduring quality is its emotional precision. The subject matter — sexual alienation, religious trauma, the difficulty of asserting one's own voice, the slow aftermath of assault — is handled with a directness that was genuinely startling for its moment. Songs about women's experience had existed for as long as women had been making music, but not quite like this; not with this combination of melodic accessibility and unflinching specificity.

  14. Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens

    28 augustus 2025 · 48 min

    Afspelen
Classic albums tend to collapse the distance between the listener and the artist, and Carrie & Lowell does this more completely than almost any record in recent memory. There is something about its intimacy that feels almost illicit, as though you are not meant to be hearing this. It has the quality of a letter that was never intended to be sent, or a diary found tucked behind a wall. And yet it communicates universally, because what Stevens is ultimately singing about is not just his mother or his grief but the primal human experience of loving someone who cannot fully love you back, of trying to make meaning in the face of absence and death. "We're all gonna die," he repeats at the end of one song, and it is not morbid so much as clarifying — a statement of fact that arrives like a kind of release. Lees meer

The Velvet Underground & Nico's 1967 debut fundamentally reshaped rock music's DNA. The album created blueprints for glam rock's sexual ambiguity, punk's raw energy, and the distorted landscapes of grunge and noise rock. Though initially unsuccessful commercially, the album demonstrated rock music's potential as a serious art form, effectively bridging high art and popular culture while creating a blueprint for underground music. 14 augustus 2025 · 49 min

    Afspelen
There are albums that capture a moment and albums that transcend it. Rattlesnakes, released in October 1984, manages to do both simultaneously — and that paradox sits at the very heart of why it endures. It is, on one hand, a record inseparable from the specific cultural coordinates of its time: the grey terraces of Glasgow, the post-punk indie ferment, the student bedsit lined with dog-eared paperbacks. On the other, it sounds as fresh and emotionally alive today as it did when it first turned heads on both sides of the Atlantic more than four decades ago. Lees meer

  17. Blackstar by David Bowie

    7 augustus 2025 · 48 min

    Afspelen
The reason Blackstar has already secured its place in the permanent record of popular music is something no amount of musical daring alone could manufacture. Blackstar is a document of a man confronting his own death with extraordinary artistic composure. Bowie had been diagnosed with liver cancer eighteen months before the album's release, and kept his illness entirely secret. He poured that knowledge — the fear, the acceptance, the dark humour, the desperate creativity — into the record, encoding it in imagery dense enough to feel meaningful without giving the game away. Lees meer

Songs about bluebirds and freedom, about stepping aside, about the impossibility of giving everything away. A title that conjures darkness, mystery, and the void. In the annals of rock history, few albums loom as large as this one. Released in July 1980, just five months after the death of lead singer Bon Scott, it stands as a memorial and a declaration of defiance — a testament to the power of momentum, the importance of finding the right voice, and the enduring appeal of doing one thing exceptionally well. In other words, it represents the perfection of a formula, the moment when everything the band had been building toward crystallised into its most accessible, enduring form. Lees meer

  21. Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder

    17 juli 2025 · 52 min

    Afspelen
What separates Songs in the Key of Life from even the best records of its era is that it manages to be impossibly grand in its ambitions and deeply, intimately human in its execution. It moves from social commentary to domestic tenderness, from historical reckoning to pure, uncomplicated joy, and it does all of this without ever feeling like a lecture or a survey course. The emotional register shifts constantly, but the humanity at the centre of it never wavers. Lees meer

The music itself operates on a level of technical mastery that staggers even now. Wonder played the majority of instruments himself, orchestrated over 130 musicians, and pioneered the use of the Yamaha GX-1 synthesizer to construct orchestral textures that no one had heard in popular music before. He incorporated funk, jazz, Latin rhythms, gospel, classical influences, and pure pop songcraft, not as a display of eclecticism for its own sake, but because the subject — life itself — demanded that kind of range. The title was both a description and a dare: he challenged himself to write as many different things as he could, to cover as much of the human experience as the format would allow.

  22. Definitely Maybe by Oasis

    10 juli 2025 · 51 min

    Afspelen
The music on Definetely Maybe drew unapologetically from Noel’s canon of influences — the Beatles, the Stones, T. Rex, the Sex Pistols, Slade — and Oasis made no attempt to hide the debts. Noel's philosophy was simple: never be afraid of the obvious because it's all been done before. What mattered wasn't novelty but feeling, and Definitely Maybe had feeling in extraordinary abundance. The guitars were enormous, the melodies were immediate, and the production — rescued and transformed by engineer Owen Morris, who mixed the record with a technique that made it play louder than almost anything else — gave the whole thing a physical impact that still hits you in the chest 30 years on. This was not music designed for careful headphone listening. It was designed to fill rooms and change the temperature of the air. Lees meer

  23. Little Creatures by Talking Heads

    3 juli 2025 · 49 min

    Afspelen
What Talking Heads achieved on Little Creatures was something critics often undervalue: the making of a great pop album that doesn't feel like a compromise. Pop, in the pejorative sense the word is sometimes used, implies sacrifice — of depth, of strangeness, of genuine artistic intent. But Little Creatures sacrifices none of those things. It simply reorganises them, placing melody and warmth at the centre rather than the edges. The songs are immediate without being shallow, accessible without being bland. Lees meer

There's still plenty of Byrne's sideways lyricism at work, his ability to describe ordinary human experience from a slight remove that makes the familiar suddenly luminous. He hadn't stopped being strange; he had simply found something worth being strange about.

    26 juni 2025 · 43 min

Cosmo’s Factory isn’t just about versatility — it’s about consistency under pressure. These songs were born out of a chaotic, relentless period of touring and recording, yet they carry a clarity and confidence that feels almost effortless. There’s tension in the music, but also warmth, humour and a deep sense of place. It’s the sound of a band at full tilt, somehow balancing commercial success with artistic credibility. Lees meer

More than 50 years on, Cosmo’s Factory still feels immediate. It hasn’t aged into nostalgia — it still moves, still drives, still sounds like a band playing as if they’ve got somewhere to be. 25. Grace by Jeff Buckley

    19 juni 2025 · 52 min

    Afspelen
What made Grace remarkable wasn't just Buckley's voice, though that instrument deserves its reputation. It's the way that voice functioned as a kind of emotional translator, capable of turning inward-looking material into something transcendent. This was the voice of someone steeped in the chanteuse tradition — Édith Piaf, Maria Callas — but transplanted into a rock context. Listening now, Grace endures not as a monument, but as a living document — sensuous, flawed, generous, and emotionally resonant. It’s an album that doesn’t ask to be mythologised so much as revisited, each time revealing something slightly different. Lees meer

  28. In The Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra

    29 mei 2025 · 45 min

    Afspelen
Working closely with Nelson Riddle, Sinatra leaned into something radical for its time: the idea that an album could be more than a collection of songs. This wasn’t about hits. This was about mood, about narrative, about sitting alone at 3am with nothing but your thoughts and a glass in your hand. Sparse arrangements, aching strings, and that unmistakable voice — now deeper, worn, and more expressive — combine to create something intimate and unflinchingly honest. Lees meer

What makes this record endure is how completely Sinatra inhabits it. He doesn’t just sing these songs, he lives inside them, bending melodies, stretching phrases, and treating every lyric like a confession. You’re not listening to a performer —you’re overhearing a man working through something real.

At a time when albums were often little more than packaging for singles, In the Wee Small Hours helped define the concept album as an emotional journey.

  29. The Joshua Tree by U2

    22 mei 2025 · 49 min

    Afspelen
This is an album that feels vast before you even press play. Inspired by the stark landscapes of America’s deserts and the spiritual contradictions within them, it captures a band looking outward and inward at the same time. There’s a sense of pilgrimage running through it — of searching for meaning in politics, in faith, in human connection — without ever pretending the answers come easy. If earlier records like War burned with urgency, this one lives in the aftermath, sifting through dust and doubt to find something resembling hope. Lees meer

What makes The Joshua Tree remarkable is how it balances scale with intimacy. The sound is expansive, but the emotions are often fragile, even uncertain. Bono doesn’t stand above the chaos here; he’s in it, wrestling with it. The band, guided by the atmospheric touch of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, fuse their post-punk roots with shades of American blues, gospel, and folk — not as imitation, but as texture, as atmosphere.

    And that’s the key: this isn’t a victory lap. It’s a reckoning.

  31. Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys

    8 mei 2025 · 46 min

    Afspelen
What the Dust Brothers brought to the table was a vision of sampling not as decoration but as architecture. Where other producers of the era would lift a break and loop it, the Dust Brothers were building intricate, layered collages. Over 100 songs were sampled across the record, drawing from sources as disparate as funk, glam rock, reggae, jazz, and classic rock. But what the Dust Brothers created wasn't merely a set of clever beats. These were self-contained sonic worlds, each with its own internal weather system. There's a warmth and late-night looseness to the whole record. Lees meer

But as brilliant as the production is, it would mean far less without the transformation happening lyrically. Paul's Boutique is the album where Ad-Rock, MCA, and Mike D stopped being a novelty act and revealed themselves as genuinely witty artists. They still trafficked in the adolescent humor and exaggerated braggadocio that had always been part of their identity, but layered into all of that was something sharper and stranger: an encyclopedic, almost overwhelming cascade of pop-cultural references, literary namedrops, and oblique allusions that demanded genuine engagement.

The album emerged from difficult circumstances, recorded largely by a stripped-down trio after members of Wings left just before the sessions. What might have been a setback instead forced McCartney to focus, writing, producing and performing much of the music himself and rediscovering the melodic instinct and studio imagination that had defined his earlier work. World Without Tears is a great album not only because it explores universal experiences like love, loss, pain and resilience, but because it does so with a rawness and unflinching honesty that few albums dare to approach. Williams uses her unique ability to craft songs that hit at the heart of human emotion, channeling complex themes with simplicity and unvarnished truth. In this album, she doesn’t just sing about pain — she lives in it, lets it breathe and even pushes it further, capturing moments of vulnerability and defiance with grit and grace. Lees meer
  34. Wild Wood by Paul Weller

    17 april 2025 · 48 min

    Afspelen
Released in 1993, Wild Wood is the sound of an artist stepping away from the noise and looking inward, trading urgency for atmosphere, and swagger for something far more grounded. There’s a looseness to the record, a warmth that feels almost handmade, as if Weller is rediscovering the simple act of playing music for its own sake. It draws deeply from the past, but never feels like imitation. Instead, it’s a conversation with those influences, filtered through Weller’s own evolving identity. Lees meer

What makes Wild Wood endure is that sense of searching. This is not a record chasing hits or trends; it’s an artist questioning himself in real time. There’s introspection, doubt, and moments of quiet optimism woven through it, all carried by a voice that sounds lived-in rather than performed. Even the production choices — leaving in imperfections, embracing space — add to the feeling that you’re hearing something honest and unguarded.

  35. Red by Taylor Swift

What makes Red a classic isn't its commercial success, though it achieved plenty of that. Rather, it's the way the album captures Swift at a pivotal crossroads, caught between the country-pop sound that made her famous and the pure pop dominance that would define her later work. The album's power lies in its refusal to choose just one path, instead embracing contradiction and hybridity as central to its identity. This wasn't Swift cautiously dipping her toe into new waters — it was a full-bodied leap into uncertainty, documented in real time. Lees meer

Released in 1971, There’s a Riot Goin’ On captured the disillusionment and unrest of the early ’70s with a raw, almost haunting intensity. Gone were the bright, infectious grooves of Sly’s earlier work; in their place was a murky, introspective sound that blended funk, soul, and rock with a striking sense of urgency and realism. It’s a record that challenges listeners, diving into themes of disillusionment, racial tension, and personal turmoil, all underscored by Sly Stone’s vision of a nation on the brink. Lees meer

  37. Dummy by Portishead

    27 maart 2025 · 49 min

    Afspelen
The album's genius lies in its refusal to comfort. Despite spending decades soundtracking intimate moments and dinner parties, Dummy is fundamentally unsettling music. Where its title might suggest something soothing — a pacifier for comedown culture — it instead tastes metallic and bitter. The album sustains a singular, enveloping mood for 50 minutes, a carefully constructed atmosphere where every element exists to serve despair in its many variations. Portishead's achievement was in creating something so idiosyncratic that it transcended its influences, yet Dummy never feels derivative. Its obsessions are too specific, too doggedly pursued, and ultimately too strange to be mere synthesis. Lees meer

  38. The Final Cut by Pink Floyd

    20 maart 2025 · 50 min

    Afspelen
Released in 1983, The Final Cut arrived in a Britain gripped by the Falklands afterglow, austerity economics, and the cold dread of nuclear escalation. It’s an album forged in a cultural moment when patriotism, paranoia and political theatre were colliding in real time. And into that moment Roger Waters poured something deeply personal: his lifelong grief for a father lost at Anzio, the trauma inherited from a generation of veterans, and a fury at leaders eager to turn conflict into capital. And if you listen closely, beneath the explosions and the sarcasm, you’ll hear something else: a fragile belief that empathy might yet survive the darkest times. Lees meer

  39. Ghosteen by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

    13 maart 2025 · 49 min

    Afspelen
The deeper reason Ghosteen qualifies as a classic is its relationship to its audience. Great albums do not merely describe an experience; they create a space in which listeners can locate their own. Cave's grief is specific — a father, a son, a particular bright afternoon in 2015 — but the questions the album raises are universal. What do we do with loss that cannot be reasoned with? How do we go on loving, knowing what love costs? Can faith — in God, in the future, in other people — survive contact with the worst the world can do? Cave does not answer these questions cleanly, and that is precisely the point. He finds comfort not in resolution but in solidarity: in the ancient recognition that everyone, everywhere, has walked through some version of hell, that suffering is not a private aberration but a thread woven into the fabric of human life. 40. Either/Or by Elliott Smith

Part of what elevates Either/Or from a very good record to a great one is the songwriting, which operates with a rare kind of intelligence. Smith wrote with extraordinary specificity, populating his songs with particular images and situations, and yet these details never feel self-indulgent or opaque. Instead, they function as entry points into emotional truths that are broadly, sometimes devastatingly, recognisable. His songs are inhabited by loners and searchers, people caught in cycles they cannot quite escape, reaching for connection and meaning in a world that doesn't always offer either. Lees meer

  41. Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon

    27 februari 2025 · 54 min

    Afspelen
There are albums that define a moment and albums that define a person. John Lennon's solo debut, released in December 1970, does something rarer and more uncomfortable than either: it defines the gap between the two — the chasm between the person the world thought it knew and the man who had been living inside that image for a decade, quietly suffocating. It is one of the most nakedly confessional records in the history of popular music, and one of the most misunderstood. Despite its critical standing and its near-permanent residence on lists of great albums, it remains, somehow, underrated — a record whose full weight and significance is still not entirely reckoned with. 42. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan

    20 februari 2025 · 54 min

    Afspelen
The genius of the album lies in how it balances the political and the personal without ever feeling calculated or message-driven. The album moves from the cosmic questioning of nuclear annihilation to the intimate ache of lost love, from righteous fury at warmongers to absurdist humour about post-apocalyptic survival, from blistering social commentary on civil rights to nuanced romance. This wasn't the work of a craftsman carefully constructing songs — this was an artist in a white-hot creative state, channeling something larger than himself. The cultural impact was immediate and seismic. Dylan had demonstrated that the person singing the song could also be the person who wrote it, permanently altering the relationship between singer and songwriter. Lees meer

This is the album where Springsteen stops romanticising his characters and starts standing beside them. The streets, factories and highways are still here, but they’re no longer backdrops for myth. They’re places where people live, age, compromise and keep going. Darkness on the Edge of Town reframes Springsteen’s world as unmistakably working class, and it does so without condescension or despair. Its central tension is not between hope and hopelessness, but between living fully and merely surviving. Lees meer

  47. Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz

    16 januari 2025 · 57 min

The genius of Let Love Rule lies not in its novelty but in its authenticity. By drawing from the psychedelic experimentation of the late 1960s, the raw emotional honesty of early John Lennon, and the funk-rock fusion that Prince had recently abandoned, Kravitz wasn't simply recycling the past. He was distilling decades of Black musical innovation into a cohesive artistic statement that spoke to universal themes while avoiding the sonic pitfalls of his contemporary moment. What makes this album classic is precisely what made it stand out upon release: its refusal to compromise. He played virtually every instrument, sang every vocal part, and shaped every sonic decision. This wasn't ego — it was a commitment to artistic vision that ensured the album's internal consistency and emotional coherence. Lees meer

  48. Tumbleweed Connection by Elton John

    9 januari 2025 · 53 min

The album wanders confidently away from conventional pop structures, unfolding in movements rather than tidy choruses. Country, blues, gospel, and folk all colour the palette, and Paul Buckmaster’s orchestrations, though present, lean into mood rather than spectacle. The result is an album that feels cinematic, as if each song is a scene from an unmade Western about loyalty, loss, and the uneasy promises of progress. Tumbleweed Connection is a dusty, dreamlike detour that works spectacularly — not because it polished his strengths, but because it dared to reimagine them altogether. Lees meer

Blue Valentine captures Waits before he fully committed to the experimental carnival barker persona that would dominate his later work. There are hints of the strangeness to come, but it remains largely grounded in recognisable song forms and emotional territory. This makes it perhaps his most accessible work from his early period, an entry point for people who might find his later avant-garde excursions too challenging, while still containing enough idiosyncrasy to reward devoted attention. Often cited as her “happy album”, this is a record that finds Harvey drawing energy from big cities, new love, and the rush of being caught up in something larger than yourself. This was Harvey reclaiming the electric guitar as her primary storytelling tool, and the result is some of the most immediate and melodic music of her career.
