145. Who Belongs in Jerusalem? (Nehemiah 11)
1 november 2026 · 1 uur 5 min
What happens when you rebuild the walls of a city, declare it holy, and then realize nobody actually wants to live there? Apparently, if you want to be biblical, you hold a lottery. Nehemiah 11 is full of names, genealogies, temple workers, gatekeepers, and a surprisingly interesting question about who gets to call a place home. It's the kind of chapter that makes you wonder why it's in the Bible in the first place, until you start looking at what it's actually doing. Lees meer
This week, we're exploring the politics of belonging, the construction of communal identity, and the difference between claiming a place as your inheritance and understanding the complicated history of the people who live there. We'll also look at how religious communities decide whose contributions get remembered, whose voices get left out, and why rebuilding walls doesn't necessarily mean you've built a thriving community. Because a city can have impressive walls, a temple, and a whole lot of people on a list, but that doesn't automatically make it a holy place. Who gets to belong in the restored Jerusalem? And who gets to decide?

144. Thank God I Got Left Behind (LIVE from KC)
25 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 29 min
Few doctrines have produced as much fear, anxiety, and terrible movies as the rapture. If you grew up wondering whether you'd be left behind, checking to see if your family was still around, or lying awake terrified that the end times might start at any moment, you know how deeply those teachings can get into your head. But what if the version of the end times you were taught isn't actually what's in the Bible? Lees meer
Live from Kansas City, we're bringing you a special panel from Homebrewed Theology's Theology Beer Camp 2026, featuring Colin along with Anna Sieges-Beal and Cynthia Shafer-Elliott of The Bible Divas and Alexis Rice of The Sacred Slope. Together, we share our own experiences with end times teachings, revisit the biblical texts that terrified us, and discover how much more manageable those passages become when we read them in their original historical contexts. And here's the kicker: the rapture that terrorized so many of us as children is a shockingly recent and very un-biblical invention.
Of course, figuring that out doesn't automatically make the old fears disappear. So we talk about the psychological damage these teachings can leave behind, what it takes to untangle those fears, and how we begin to heal from a theology that taught us to dread the future. After this session, you'll be able to say with us, "Thank God I Got Left Behind!"

143. Why Purity Promises Never Last (Nehemiah 10)
11 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 47 min
This is the “rededicating your heart to God” chapter of Nehemiah. On the surface, it looks like the moment when the people finally get serious about the Law and commit themselves to doing things right. But there's a minority report hiding underneath that suggests things weren't quite as straightforward as they seem. Lees meer
This week, we compare Nehemiah's ancient reforms with modern evangelical family pledges, purity rings, and other attempts to make people behave by getting them to promise really hard. And if the Bible itself is any indication, these kinds of reforms don't exactly have a great track record. Saying the right words doesn't magically make you a different person.
We'll also catch Nehemiah making some surprisingly subtle changes to established scripture and ask whether rewriting the tradition is ever appropriate. Along the way, we run into biblically acceptable games of chance, why almost no Christian actually follows all Ten Commandments, the days when God commanded child sacrifice, and why Larry Burkett was completely off his rocker!

142. Mr. Fosdick, I Owe You an Apology
4 oktober 2026 · 2 uur 7 min
In 1922, a Baptist pastor stood up in a Presbyterian pulpit and did the one thing preachers aren't supposed to do — he told the truth about what he actually believed. Three years later, it cost him the pulpit and helped set the stage for the Scopes Monkey Trial. A hundred years later, most of us raised fundamentalist have never once heard his name. Lees meer
This week, three former fundamentalist Baptists sit down with Harry Emerson Fosdick's Shall the Fundamentalists Win?, the sermon our institutions taught us to fear, and read it in his own words for the first time. Fosdick spoke about biblical criticism, evolution, the virgin birth, progressive revelation, deconstruction, religious doubt, and what happens when Christians turn theological disagreement into a test of who's allowed to belong. And then there's Clarence Macartney, the guy who preached the fundamentalist response but definitely wouldn't be welcome in fundamentalist churches today.
Maybe Fosdick wasn't the villain we were taught he was. Maybe he was foreseeing something about American Christianity that we still haven't figured out a century later. And maybe the really uncomfortable question isn't “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” but “What happens when they do?”

141. History of the Israelites, Part 1 (Nehemiah 9)
27 september 2026 · 2 uur 24 min
Two weeks after the block party that closes Chapter 8, we turn the page to find everyone fasting through a 12-hour day of scripture reading and communal confession — for sins they didn't personally commit. Along the way we discover a mysterious gap in their timeline, extra details added to biblical stories that weren't there the first time around, and a prayer that never actually asks for anything. Lees meer
We come across dragon-slaying giant kings, God's womb-like maternal love, and Persian mythology's fingerprints on how Judeans talked about God.
As if that wasn't enough for one day, we also ask why you should read multiple Bible translations, whether gender-inclusive language belongs in scripture, why ancient Israel wasn't actually monotheistic, why the biblical authors thought you're partly responsible for your ancestors' sins, and what biblical forgiveness actually means (Hint: it's not what you were taught in church!).

140. Building a Home for 15 Million Spiritual Exiles (ft. Heather Cronk)
20 september 2026 · 56 min
We're excited to announce a brand new group for people who found themselves no longer welcome in church! Lees meer
Heather Cronk joins us to talk about Project 21:12, her effort to organize and mobilize exvangelicals to tell their stories and reshape the culture that shaped them. Fifteen million Americans gave everything to the evangelical cause, only to find the doors closed the moment they started asking questions. They deserve better. You deserve better.
Our conversation covers the big targets like Christian nationalism, racial inequality, and patriarchy; but we also go deeper, exploring the fundamentalist thinking that quietly outlives evangelicalism itself, often long after someone's left the church behind.
Project 21:12 is building a movement for everyone on the deconstruction spectrum to feel welcomed, validated, and equipped to change the world around them. If you enjoy this discussion, be sure to check out their website and follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok!

139. Rants with Colin 2: Rant Harder
13 september 2026 · 2 uur 18 min
Wrong church, wrong school, same Colin and Stephanie! Lees meer
This week's targets include:
* Bible colleges that teach information 200 years out of date
* Parents who ban Disney movies because they don't understand how character growth works
* Fundamentalists who think faith needs a label to be real
* People who rebound date churches
* Pastors who demand you pray for them but really mean "Pay no attention to that abuse behind the curtain"
But it's not all raging against the religious machine. We also celebrate 3 years of uncut and unfiltered Bible scholarship, respond to some of your comments and questions, and cast the most unhinged Jesus movie ever imagined. If you've ever wondered how Olivia Rodrigo and Nic Cage relate to a conversation about church and the Bible, this is the episode for you!

138. Jesus, Take the Reel: How Films Shape the Jesus in Our Heads (ft. Jeannine Brown and John Dunne)
6 september 2026 · 1 uur 13 min
🎬 Jesus movies have been lighting up the silver screen for nearly as long as movies have existed. We all have our favorites (and the ones we’d rather forget) but how often do we stop and ask why we think one portrayal of Jesus is “faithful” and another isn’t? Lees meer
Enter Jeannine K. Brown and John Anthony Dunne, authors of The Greatest Story Ever Retold! Their book presents a fascinating history of Jesus on film, but it also puts us in the hot seat. They explore how our expectations of what a faithful portrayal of Jesus looks like can reveal just as much about the viewer as they do about the movie.
We talk about why biblical characters rarely experience character development, what watching Harry Potter after reading the books has in common with watching a Jesus movie, the aspects of Jesus’s personality we may have completely overlooked, and why using biblical faithfulness as our measuring stick might be more complicated—and maybe even more impossible—than we think.
Because the truth is we’re all directing our own Jesus movie in our heads every time we open the Gospels.🎥
If you enjoy this conversation, be sure to grab a copy of The Greatest Story Ever Retold, follow Jeanine on Facebook, follow John on Facebook and Instagram, and subscribe to John's podcast, The Two Cities.

137. Colonizing Christianity into a Whiteness Gospel (ft. Danny Bryant)
30 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 7 min
What if the gospel you were taught was never meant to benefit everyone? Lees meer
This week, Fr. Danny Bryant takes on the “whiteness gospel”—the ways Christianity can baptize privilege, colonialism, shame, nationalism, and the preservation of power while still insisting it is preaching the same good news as Jesus.
We talk about:
* When patriotism gets twisted into nationalism
* Why Calvinism is really just spiritual sadism
* How colonialism is still alive and well in evangelical churches
* What dangers exist in deconstruction
* Why getting caught up in a cult doesn’t mean you’re stupid
With remarkable pastoral care, Danny guides us through our inherited blind spots, past concerns about racism, and into a more Christ-like Christianity where we have truly died to self and risen with Jesus.

136. There Are No Atheists in Mosh Pits (ft. Josh Patterson)
23 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 4 min
When church couldn't hold my pain, metal did. Lees meer
What happens when the music you were told was dangerous becomes the very thing that keeps you alive? This week, Josh Patterson joins us to talk about metal music, faith, deconstruction, identity, anger, lament, and the strange ways a song can sometimes say what a sermon never could. We explore why metal often gets treated as spiritually dangerous, what people are really afraid of when they call it evil, and how a genre built around screaming into the darkness can become a place of honesty, catharsis, hope, and healing.
Even if metal isn't your thing, this conversation still matters because it's really about what we reach for when our faith doesn’t have words for what we’re carrying and why sometimes the loudest music in the room is the thing that finally makes us feel heard.
