The Arizal, Part 5: The Kav — The Finite Expression of Infinite Hope
22 augustus 2023 · 43 min
How can infinite light enter a finite world without erasing the individuality, limitation, and struggle that make human life possible? Lees meer
In this concluding episode, Rabbi Joey Rosenfeld explores the Kav—the singular ray of infinite light that enters the empty space created through the tzimtzum. The Kav is itself an impossible paradox: a measured expression of that which cannot be measured, and a finite revelation of the Infinite. It allows the worlds to emerge with real distinctions and levels while remaining connected to the Ohr Ein Sof from which they receive their life.
The Kav does not initially reach the lowest point of the chalal, preserving the experience of distance and the possibility of human avodah. Yet the promise of redemption is that this ray will ultimately descend into the lowest places, revealing that below was never truly disconnected from above. The Kav is identified with Torah, whose finite letters contain and communicate infinite Divine light. It is also the root of kivui—hope—the faith that even where Hashem appears most absent, another ray of light can enter, illuminate the darkness, and reveal the hidden connection that has never been completely lost.
Topics include:
• The chalal created through tzimtzum and the reentry of Divine light
• The Kav as a measured expression of the immeasurable Ohr Ein Sof
• How unity and differentiation can exist simultaneously
• Why the Kav does not initially reach the bottom of the chalal
• Torah and mitzvos as expressions of the Kav within finite existence
• The future descent of the Kav and the revelation of light within the lowest places
• The relationship between Kav, kivui, emunah, and the refusal to despairThis is Part 5 of 5 in The Arizal, a series exploring the spiritual and therapeutic meaning of the Arizal’s teachings and their application to the inner life.

The Arizal, Part 4: Revelation of Concealment — Tzimtzum Both Real and Unreal
17 augustus 2023 · 59 min
What does it mean to say that Hashem concealed His infinite light—and can Divine absence ever truly be real? Lees meer
In this episode, Rabbi Joey Rosenfeld enters the first central sugya of the Arizal’s system: the mystery of tzimtzum. Before creation, the light of the Ohr Ein Sof filled all possible existence. In order for a finite world, individual beings, and genuine relationship to emerge, there had to be an apparent empty space—a chalal in which something other than the overwhelming revelation of infinitude could seem to exist.
The episode explores the different approaches to whether tzimtzum should be understood as an actual withdrawal of Divine light or as a concealment of a presence that never departed. Through the teachings of Rabbi Chaim Vital, Mahari Sarug, the Baal Shem Tov, and other mekubalim, these positions begin to reveal two dimensions of the same mystery. Tzimtzum is both the experience of absence and a new form of Divine expression. The practical difference is profound: spiritual life is not only an attempt to bring Hashem into a place where He is missing, but the work of refining our perception until we discover that He was always already present.
Topics include:
• The purpose of creation and Hashem’s desire to reveal goodness and unity
• The Ohr Ein Sof and the emergence of the chalal hapanui
• Tzimtzum as contraction, withdrawal, concealment, and concentrated revelation
• Whether tzimtzum should be understood literally or nonliterally
• Rabbi Chaim Vital and Mahari Sarug’s complementary descriptions of creation
• The difference between recovering an absent light and revealing a hidden presence
• Finding Hashem within the places that appear empty, distant, or disconnectedThis is Part 4 of 5 in The Arizal, a series exploring the spiritual and therapeutic meaning of the Arizal’s teachings and their application to the inner life.

The Arizal, Part 3: The Air of Tsfas — Binah and The Laughter of Yitzchak
8 augustus 2023 · 50 min
How can severity, fragmentation, and concealment become the birthplace of freedom, sweetness, and joy? Lees meer
In this episode, Rabbi Joey Rosenfeld explores the sefirah of Binah as the inner world in which the teachings of the Arizal unfold. Binah stands at the threshold between unity and differentiation: it contains the emerging possibility of fragmentation while remaining rooted in the unity that precedes it. It is therefore both the source of dinim—constriction, severity, and difficulty—and the place where those very dinim can be sweetened and returned to their source.
The Arizal’s ascent from Mitzrayim to Tzfas becomes a model for this transformation. Tzfas represents hiddenness and constriction, but also the concealed storehouses of goodness waiting to be revealed. This is the secret of Yitzchak and holy laughter: the discovery that the darkness was never outside the light, and that descent itself can become the path of return. By learning the Eitz Chaim both downward into concealment and upward toward the Ohr Ein Sof, the apparent heaviness of existence begins to reveal the hidden joy contained within it.
Topics include:
• The ten sefiros and the relationship between the upper three and lower seven
• Binah as the bridge between unity and fragmentation
• Binah as both the source of dinim and the place of their sweetening
• The fifty gates of Binah and the structure of the Eitz Chaim
• Tzfas as a place of concealment, purification, and hidden goodness
• Yitzchak, gevurah, holy laughter, and the reversal of darkness into light
• The Arizal’s simchah and the discovery of the Infinite within the finiteThis is Part 3 of 5 in The Arizal, a series exploring the spiritual and therapeutic meaning of the Arizal’s teachings and their application to the inner life.

The Arizal, Part 2: A River Flows From Eden — The Unfolding Light of the Tree of Life
31 juli 2023 · 1 uur 9 min
What does it mean to approach the teachings of the Arizal not only as a system of Kabbalah, but as a Torah capable of transforming the way we experience our lives? Lees meer
In this episode, Rabbi Joey Rosenfeld explores the transmission and unfolding of the Arizal’s teachings through his students and the generations of tzaddikim who followed them. Beginning with Rabbi Chaim Vital and Mahari Sarug, the episode traces how the writings of the Arizal developed into a vast, interconnected system—one whose different expressions are not competing paths, but distinct revelations of a single inner light.
The river flowing from Eden and dividing into four streams becomes a model for the principal approaches to understanding the Arizal: the Rashash, the Vilna Gaon, the Ramchal, and the path of the Baal Shem Tov and Rebbe Nachman. Each reveals a different dimension of the Eitz Chaim, yet all ultimately flow from and return to the same source. Through these teachings, Kabbalah becomes not merely a map of supernal worlds, but a vulnerable and practical way of seeing—one that can speak directly to the heart and transform fragmentation into a deeper experience of unity.
Topics include:• Learning the Arizal with vulnerability and personal urgency
• The Eitz Chaim as a sefer mussar and a guide for inner transformation
• Rabbi Chaim Vital and Mahari Sarug as transmitters of the Arizal’s teachings
• The relationship between the different systems and worlds described by the Arizal’s students
• The Rashash, the Vilna Gaon, the Ramchal, and the Baal Shem Tov as four rivers flowing from Eden
• The four dimensions of sod: pshat, remez, drash, and sod within the hidden Torah
• Discovering unity within the many paths of KabbalahThis is Part 2 of 5 in The Arizal, a series exploring the spiritual and therapeutic meaning of the Arizal’s teachings and their application to the inner life.

The Arizal, Part 1: On the Banks of the Nile — Revealing Presence in Absence
26 juli 2023 · 1 uur 4 min
What can the teachings of the Arizal offer us in moments of concealment, constriction, and spiritual disconnection? Lees meer
In this opening episode, Rabbi Joey Rosenfeld introduces the therapeutic dimension of the Arizal’s teachings and the new language they provide for understanding God, creation, and the inner experience of being human. These teachings are approached not simply as abstract or esoteric ideas, but as a form of spiritual medicine for those searching for life, meaning, and a point of connection within a fragmented world.
The Arizal’s own descent into Mitzrayim—and the revelations he received in solitude on the banks of the Nile—becomes a model for the teaching itself. The deepest light is revealed not only despite exile and concealment, but from within them. Through the ideas of Mitzrayim, tzimtzum, Yitzchak, and holy laughter, this episode begins to uncover how apparent absence can itself conceal a deeper presence, and how severity and brokenness can be transformed into places of light, joy, and redemption.
Topics include:
• The therapeutic and psychological significance of the Arizal’s teachings
• The Arizal’s new language for understanding God, creation, and human experience
• Approaching the Arizal’s words with both reverence and personal application
• Kabbalah as spiritual medicine rather than knowledge reserved only for the spiritually accomplished
• Mitzrayim and the Nile as symbols of constriction, exile, and concealed revelation
• Yitzchak, laughter, and the discovery of presence within apparent absence
This is Part 1 of 5 in The Arizal, a series exploring the spiritual and therapeutic meaning of the Arizal’s teachings and their application to the inner life.
