All Them Witches is a band whose fans will show up. It appears that once you fall in love with their long form explorations of time and space, you will follow them to the ends of the earth. They play blues, transmuted. They can shift effortlessly from spooky R&B to heavy metal to epic psych-rock. Rhythm holds it all together, but any of the individual musicians can wander off into improvisation - safely cradled in the communal groove. They recently put out 'The Baker’s Dozen' - one song for each month of the year, plus one for safety - released on YouTube. They’ve been playing multi-night-in-one-city sold out shows supporting their latest album - 'Nothing As Ideal.' It was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios, and is available on New West Records.

Vieux Farka Touré has released 7 studio albums since his debut in 2007. He’s shared stages with and collaborated with a slew of great musicians - from Amadou and Mariam to John Scofield and Dave Matthews. Without warning she flips the switch and bang! we are into the deadpan “Welcome to my Island” hook, and a beat that could be described as “Don’t you forget about the Soul-Sonic Force.” From there the music flows seamlessly through genres, styles, decades, vibes - anything goes, and Caroline Polachek’s encyclopedic knowledge of (and love for) music, unifies the experience.

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of this band - they originate a sound. They are pioneers of psychedelic cumbia and all cumbia music has changed - or more properly all music has changed because of them. The lineup has also changed, but the group is still going. Like a family, they straddle generations. There are more than 30 albums available on vinyl through Infopesa Records, and on streaming services.

They have not released an album or really been performing live in over 12 years, but now that they are playing again - they rocked the 2023 Vive Latino festival - we are holding out hope for a new record. Their most recent full-length is 'Caballeros del Albedrío' available on Terrícolas Imbéciles Records and Bandcamp. They perform in masks - in accordance with the motto - “No importa tu cara, importas tú.” It’s not your face that’s important - it’s you.

Sofi Tukker is a duo - Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. They met at an event - he was DJing, she was singing Bossa Nova. Tucker asked if he could remix a song, and they’ve been working together ever since. While they were both attending Brown, Tucker did a DJ set opening for the electro-funk-disco duo The Knocks. They encouraged him and Sophie to move to New York to make music. Good move. Their very first EP 'Soft Animals' opens with the song “Drinkee” which was eventually nominated for a Grammy. Their latest album 'WET TENNIS' (which stands for “When Everyone Tries To Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe”) is available on Ultra Music.

The resulting concoction of songs draws on cross-continental influence, yet at its core is a desire to illuminate the vivid qualities of classic Turkish music, honoring the Anatolian folk and psych artists from this golden era of music.

Luna is one of those bands that just sound right when you drop the needle on the record. They’ve been doing it for a long time. The band was started by Dean Wareham in 1991, after he quit the influential alt rock band Galaxie 500. There were a few lineup changes, and some life changes before it settled into the current lineup in 2000 - Dean, bassist Britta Philips, drummer Lee Wall and guitarist Sean Eden. The music would fit in a set with the Velvet Underground, Mercury Rev, and Spacemen 3. Their latest, 'A Sentimental Education,' is available on Double Feature Records and Bandcamp.

The two drummers face each other across the stage, and actually share a single kick-drum. The guitar player facing down-stage looks over the top of the two sets. But - very important - there is also a massive modular synth, looming behind and operated by the guitar player. It’s big enough and interesting enough to almost count as a fourth member. The band plays their blend of psych rock / kraut rock / electronica / punk with relentless momentum. Their 6 song LP 'Meule' is available on Bandcamp, and new recordings are imminent.

It’s that, without a doubt, she would create a pathway to somewhere, and the journey to that new place would be delightful. It would be enchanting. Her latest album is called “The Turning Wheel,” embracing - both in title and in spirit - the karmic circle of life. The music combines her flexible airy voice with mischievous harmony, synths with acoustic orchestra, and natural or supernatural topics. It's available on Sacred Bones Records.
