The Wild Recovery Story Helping Make Sober High School An Option For Teens, With Seth Welch
11 februari 2021 · 1 uur 19 min
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
For students who want a shot at sobriety - whether they've been to treatment or not - there are very few options when it comes to high school. Finding a place where the cool kids aren't using drugs or alcohol can sound like a fantasy but at recovery high schools, the culture promotes and celebrates being sober, not just at school, but full-time. Lees meerSeth Welch, Recovery Counselor at Seattle's Interagency Recovery School, shares a very personal and inspiring story of how his life has come full circle - from using drugs and alcohol to relieve anxiety and fit in at his high school to now being part of a growing group of educators and recovery specialists who are planting sober high schools across the country.
Seth's descent into addiction didn't end until he was in his 20's, narrowly escaping death in a car accident and looking at years of jail time. He even had help from Seattle's hometown celebrity, Macklemore, who was scared enough for his friend's life that he helped stage an intervention with Seth's family.
It's a harrowing story that should give hope to parents whose kids are off the rails and seem to have either a jail cell or grave in their near future. You'll also hear how these recovery high schools are giving young people a chance they might not otherwise get in a traditional school setting.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
If the communication with your son or daughter who's misusing drugs or alcohol has broken down significantly, or if you're just trying to understand them better and are getting shut down with your attempts at talking, this is your episode. Lees meerBecause our kids are stressing us out and living a dangerous lifestyle, we tend to focus all our communication on their problems and on trying to get them to change. This episode provides practical help for parents to:
consider the information you need that will help build a healthier relationship with your son or daughter
learn specific questions and types of questions to ask in order to naturally pull that information from your child
recognize new ways to ask the questions for the best chance of having a valuable, healthy interaction

Things You Can Let Go Of When Your Child Is Misusing Drugs or Alcohol with Brenda Zane
4 november 2020 · 31 min
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Parents who are trying to help a child misusing drugs or alcohol are usually overwhelmed, stressed out and frazzled from trying to keep up with their normal life and deal with the chaos and uncertainty that's invaded their home. Add a global health pandemic, massive social unrest and an election of historic proportions and it can feel like a tidal wave has crashed over your world and you're about to slip under. Lees meerThis episode will be helpful if you're looking for ways to offload some of "life" while you focus on helping your child and yourself. Sometimes we just need to hear from someone who's been through it before that we have permission to let go of certain things, and what a few of those things might be.
You'll get some grounding from the latest study on how many families are being impacted by substance use disorder (to confirm you are not alone!) and then we'll dive into specific mindsets and practical things you may want to consider letting go of - for now - or ever, as you work on adding some sanity and control to your days.
In this succinct, 30-minute episode I cover a lot, including:
the most recent data from SAMSHA that shows over 16 million young people are struggling with a substance use disorder
how hanging onto things like guilt, shame, the past, and negative self-talk can hinder our efforts at helping our kids
and why letting go of comparison, saying yes, extreme diets and clutter can actually free up vital space in your brain and life

1 oktober 2020 · 56 min

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
You may be a parent who's noticing changes in your teen or young adult that worry you, but drugs or alcohol don't seem to be the problem. Building Emotionally Healthy Teens Through Boundaries, Letting Go and Creating a Safe Container with Krissy Pozatek, MSW
19 augustus 2020 · 56 min
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
"When parents are parents, kids can be kids" sounds easy right? Yet it's not easy to know how to be a parent who sets clear boundaries and creates a safe container for kids to grow, mature and feel all the feelings life throws at them in a healthy way. Luckily, Krissy Pozatek, MSW, joined me for an enlightening conversation on doing just that. Lees meerKrissy is the author of "The Parallel Process," a book all parents who have a child in treatment need to read, and is also a parent coach who offers an online program and online coaching sessions. With over 15 years of working with teens and young adults in a variety of therapeutic settings, Krissy offers so much insight during this conversation, including:
Why rules are actually freeing to your teen
The danger of smoothing the way for your teens and not allowing them to feel bored, sad, confused or angry
What parents need to do to help their child when they're struggling (probably not what you think)
How some kids will only learn from life and why it's important to let go of the reins
Why kids coming home from treatment programs can slip back into old behaviors if parents haven't cleaned up their skills
What enmeshment really means
Why things may get worse before they get better when parents change their actions
How all feelings are just information
What attunement is and why it's important
Why it's important for your teen to not be happy all the time

Teens, Addiction, Residential Care & Natural Highs with Derek Bowles
23 januari 2020 · 1 uur 10 min
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Derek Bowles knows a LOT about teens, addiction, substances, and the residential care kids sometimes need when local resources aren't working. Derek founded Crossroads Academy in Ogden, Utah over 13 years ago to serve as a place where adolescent boys who are struggling with substance misuse can get away from their home environment (and all that comes with it) and experience the power of getting high - naturally. Lees meerOne of the unique aspects of residential living at Crossroads is the adolescent boys participate in X-Game type sports as a way to connect with themselves, their bodies and their therapy team. Wakeboarding, skiing, mountain biking, rock-climbing and gym sessions are all part of the average day for these guys who are in the process of rebuilding their lives. In this episode you'll hear:
why sometimes kids need to get out of their life for a while and go to residential treatment (and when they shouldn't)
how to differentiate typical teen behavior and high-risk behavior like drug use
the two things that research shows works better than treatment and medication
why adventure-based treatment specifically is so effective with teens
what to look for if you're considering out-of-home care
two things Derek wishes parents would stop doing
why parents have a hard time figuring out how much risk their child is in

The Story Behind the Podcast; A Teen's Addiction, Four Rehabs, Two Overdoses and Hope
8 januari 2020 · 57 min
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Behind the closed doors of too many homes are families being upended by a young person's substance use. It may be your 14-year-old son experimenting with pot for the first time, your 17-year-old daughter drinking till she blacks out or your 23-year-old who's smoking Percocet, Xanax, and fentanyl regularly. Lees meerAnd behind these kids are the parents. Worried, exasperated, devastated, and confused. This is your next-door neighbor, hairstylist, attorney, the PTA president, maybe he or she is you.
This pilot episode tells the story of Hopestream host Brenda Zane's family's agonizing journey through the hell of her teenage son's addiction to prescription drugs and high-risk lifestyle. She shines a light on the dark edges of what a child's addiction can do to the health and wellbeing of parents who would give any and everything to bring their child back from the abyss of substance use disorder.
From wilderness therapy at 16 to multiple fentanyl overdoses, gangs, and criminal activity, Brenda's family endured it all from inside the facade of a perfectly put-together, upper-middle-class suburban home in Seattle, WA.
But the story isn't all bad news and characters - it also includes the often-missed elements of hope, resilience, humor, and faith, all of which became crucial elements to not just surviving the trauma but thriving in the aftermath.
