Five people who think about AI for a living sit down for a rapid-fire debate, and the host throws a handful of big statements at them. First up: can we, or should we, pause AI? Almost nobody says yes, and the more interesting part is what they’d do instead. Some want to slow the frontier, some want to shape it as it goes, and one is trying to seed a beneficial AGI before someone else builds a worse one.

From there the panel gets into recursive self-improvement and whether you can keep an AI’s goals stable, whether AI will widen the gap between rich and poor (and rich and poor countries), and who foots the bill when jobs disappear. Then comes the question of why experts and the public see AI so differently. Media, culture, and trust all take some blame. The last stretch compares a Manhattan Project approach with open, decentralized AGI, and everyone gets to say the one thing they think the world needs right now, plus a parting sentence.

    Key Takeaways

Nearly everyone calls a pause a non-starter: “AI” is too fuzzy to define, and a pause would just push work underground

Keeping an AI’s goals stable while it rewrites itself may be a solvable engineering problem, but not everyone agrees that’s even desirable

On inequality, the panel splits between “it’s already happening” and “the floor keeps rising”

Public opinion on AI is shaped more by culture and media than by the tech itself

The alternative to corporate control or a government Manhattan Project: open, decentralized AGI, in the spirit of Linux

This conversation opens with a simple question to roboticist Hod Lipson, the mind behind Emo: does he feel like a villain? His answer is honest. He’s both excited and terrified, like someone being told an alien race is about to arrive and being asked whether to welcome them. From there, the discussion turns to why robot faces are so hard to build, and why he thinks the moment a robot genuinely smiles back at you will change how we connect with machines.

Then it gets into the harder questions. Hod is firm that AI won’t wipe out humanity, and he’s challenged more than once on superintelligence, on who benefits from the fear, and on whether nested sandboxes and “AI cops” can really keep us safe. The conversation also explores what it means for a robot to be self-aware, robots that repair and even “eat” each other, why he worries about kids and students whose best friend is an AI, and how any of us finds meaning when machines can do almost everything. It closes with the best advice he’s ever been given.

    About Hod Lipson

Hod Lipson is a roboticist and AI researcher who leads work on Emo, a robot focused on realistic facial expression and lip movement. His research spans robot self-awareness, self-repairing and self-reproducing robots, and AI in agriculture.

On this episode of Beyond Tomorrow, four heavyweights of the longevity field take a rapid-fire statement format and turn it into a real debate. Aubrey de Grey, Alex Zhavoronkov (Insilico Medicine), George Church (Harvard Medical School), Michael Ringel (Life Biosciences) argue over whether hype helps or hurts the field, and when longevity escape velocity, the point where damage is repaired faster than it accumulates, might actually arrive. Aubrey puts it at a 50/50 chance within 12 to 15 years. Alex says 20 to 50 years and doubts drugs alone can get there. Michael pushes back on the idea of infinite lifespans entirely, while George suggests we may already be gaining years without the evidence to prove it.

From there the panel digs into the FDA's new interest in aging, why the TAME metformin trial never opened the floodgates, and whether AI will really shrink clinical timelines. George cites a gene therapy that reached a patient in seven months, while Alex, running many programs, argues that biology still moves at the speed of traffic. The back half covers biohacking and early adopters, the gap between everyday "longevity" and longevity biotechnology, the science of epigenetic reprogramming, what could happen by the XPRIZE Healthspan deadline in 2030, and what each panelist thinks the "ChatGPT moment" for longevity will look like.

MIT Media Lab professor Ramesh Raskar argues the real danger isn't the AI engine, it's agents with no governance. His case: decentralize AI so billions of people run their own agents, and build the licences, inspections and audit trails agents need, instead of trusting a few labs to make the engine safe. His P(doom) has fallen from 90% to under 10%.

The conversation covers what an AI agent actually is, personal agents like Dot, Muse, Instinct and CC, the DRIVE framework for gradually trusting an agent, why there's no such thing as "zero-shot AGI," the OpenAI and Hugging Face incident, prompt injection, and the shift from an attention economy to an intention economy. One question runs through it all: can we get the benefits of AI agents without handing control to a handful of companies, or to the agents themselves? Ramesh's answer: don't just build better engines, build the roads, the rules and the governance.

    Key Takeaways

An agent is an LLM in a loop with tools: the LLM is the engine, the agent is the car, the internet is the road.

Build trust with DRIVE (Discover, Request, Instruct, Venture, Execute), and start with reversible tasks, no credit cards.

Decentralized agents shrink the blast radius, which is why Ramesh's P(doom) has dropped sharply.

Cost is the bottleneck: running an agent per user costs far more than serving a social media user, so expect revenue-share deals.

Prompt injection is the top risk because LLMs can't separate commands from content. Agents need licences, inspection stickers and audit trails.

On this episode of Beyond Tomorrow, I sit down with Thore Graepel, co-creator of AlphaGo and former researcher at Google DeepMind. I asked him straight up how close we are to superintelligence, and his answer surprised me: there won't be a single moment we can point to, and he argues human organizations like companies already count as a form of superintelligence. We get into why he thinks "AI will destroy humanity" is the biggest myth in the field, the near-term risks he does take seriously, and why I pushed him on the incentives behind the AI safety messaging coming from the labs.

From there we go deep on his core technical argument: that today's transformers are black boxes that mix knowledge and reasoning in the same weights, and that scaling alone will never make them trustworthy. He lays out a different approach built on explicit beliefs, hypotheses and evidence, and I found it one of the clearest explanations of AI transparency I've heard. In the back half, we talk about his time at Altos Labs, why biology is a reality check for the "cure all disease in 10 years" claims, and his cell annealing theory of rejuvenation.

    Key Takeaways

Thore sees AI progress as a "jagged frontier," not a single superintelligence moment, and by his own definition, AGI is already here

He argues companies and institutions are already a form of superintelligence

His P(doom) is very low: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and he doesn't see it

On this episode of Beyond Tomorrow, Dr. Mike Israetel breaks down what's actually happening in his own bloodstream: 5mg/week of tirzepatide year-round, plus retatrutide during fat-loss phases, and why he thinks “GLP-2” is a gray-market marketing term with no basis in real receptor biology.

He walks through the non-weight-loss case for these drugs, reduced systemic and neural inflammation, better glucose control, emerging anti-cancer data, and a documented drop in addictive behaviors from gambling to alcohol to cigarettes, before getting honest about the tradeoffs: undernutrition, anhedonia, and a long-term data set that, by his own admission, will never be “complete enough” for some critics.

From there the conversation moves into gray-market peptides, why Mike separates his own risk tolerance from what he'd recommend to the public, and why there currently isn't a single peptide he'd recommend for muscle growth despite the demand. The back half covers his real thesis: that appearance, not health, is the most reliable motivator most people actually respond to and that chasing it tends to produce the same outcomes doctors have failed for decades to sell through fear.

    Key Takeaways

Mike takes tirzepatide (Zepbound/Mounjaro) year-round at 5mg/week and adds retatrutide during cutting phases, both well within studied dose ranges

He argues most GLP-1 “anhedonia” is caloric-deficit anhedonia, not a direct drug effect, the same thing bodybuilders experience on any aggressive diet

New aggregate mortality data shows older adults on GLP-1s die less than those who aren't, which he says partially answers the “but will it …

AI safety researcher Roman Yampolskiy argues the real danger isn't AI, it's building a superintelligence we can no longer control. His case: solve problems with narrow, powerful tools instead, and still get breakthroughs in medicine, science, and productivity, without that risk.

The conversation covers AGI, recursive self-improvement, the singularity, and the existential and "suffering" risks they raise, plus what mass automation could mean for work and purpose.

From international AI agreements to human longevity, one question runs through it all: can we get the benefits of advanced AI without losing control of it? Yampolskiy's answer: keep building tools, not our replacement.

Roman Yampolskiy is an AI safety researcher and professor who studies the risks and implications of artificial intelligence. His work focuses on the challenge of controlling increasingly capable AI systems and the potential consequences of superintelligence.

Roman’s book, AI: Unexplainable, Unpredictable, Uncontrollable, explores the various reasons why the field is so challenging.

David Eagleman doesn't shy away from the question. He lays out the case for an AI president, one that could crunch more data than any human cabinet, sidestep the ego and grudges that shape so many political decisions, and maybe even out-think our worst instincts.

Sounds great, until you ask the harder questions. Who writes the code that decides what "the greater good" means? Can a machine actually be moral, or just really good at faking it? And if an AI ever did hold real power, who's holding the leash?

We get into all of it: democracy, tribalism, consciousness, and how close we actually are to AGI. David doesn't pretend to have it all figured out but he makes a compelling case that the ground is shifting faster than most of us realize.

AI may be changing more than how we work. Joscha Bach argues that it could fundamentally reshape how we think, relate to others, and understand ourselves. The future may be difficult to predict because technology is changing the very models we use to understand it.

The conversation moves from AI agents and universal basic intelligence to consciousness and agency. Bach explores whether machines could become more than tools, and whether AI might eventually extend human minds and biology onto new substrates.

But the biggest question may not be whether AI becomes conscious. It is whether humanity can build and govern these systems wisely. Bach argues that AI could make society more capable, but only if we develop better incentives, stronger long-term thinking, and a positive vision for the future.

Joscha Bach is a computer scientist, philosopher, and researcher focused on artificial intelligence, cognition, and machine consciousness. He founded the California Institute for Machine Consciousness to explore how minds can self-organize through controlled experiments.

Today, Julian welcomes Sophie Grégoire Trudeau to discuss what it truly means to feel safe, seen, and authentic in a world that moves too fast and demands too much. She unpacks why so many of us feel disconnected not because we’re broken, but because our nervous systems are stuck in survival mode. From the impact of early childhood bonding to the erosion of trust in society, she explains how performance culture, social media, and polarization have pulled us away from our true selves.

The conversation moves fluidly between personal vulnerability and big societal questions: community vs. isolation, authenticity vs. performance, fear vs. love. Sophie reflects on emotional maturity, the importance of regulating our inner world, and why healing cannot just be an individual journey, it must also be communal. She challenges the idea of a “perfect system,” instead advocating for environments that allow human beings to belong, contribute, and feel safe enough to be creative. Through moments of raw honesty, including discussions around trust, confidence, loneliness, and love, Julian and Sophie become less about politics and more about the human condition itself.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau is a mental health advocate, speaker, and author dedicated to human connection, emotional regulation, and authentic living. Through her work in public service and global advocacy, she explores how trust, community, and self-awareness shape both personal wellbeing and society at large.

In Sophie’s book, Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other, she shares moments from her own journey: from her childhood, through her struggles with an eating disorder in her teens and early adulthood; from a career as a speaker and television host to de facto "first lady" and mother of three.

In this thought-provoking conversation, Peter Norvig reflects on his decades-long journey through artificial intelligence, from experimenting with early AI systems in the 1980s to witnessing today’s explosion of large language models. He shares how even pioneers in the field were surprised by the path AI took, especially the rise of neural networks trained on massive data rather than carefully hand-coded rules. Together, the discussion explores how AI has evolved, what it means for everyday users, and why some of its biggest breakthroughs, like programming automation and protein folding, signal a profound shift in how knowledge and innovation happen.

Beyond the technology itself, the conversation turns to the deeper societal questions: income inequality, job displacement, democratization of AI, and the risk of wealth concentrating among a few dominant players. Norvig offers a balanced perspective, neither utopian nor dystopian, emphasizing that while AI may eliminate certain jobs, it also creates new opportunities, particularly for adaptable thinkers and entrepreneurs. From universal basic income to guardrails, third-party safety certifications, and the ethics of AI regulation, this episode challenges us to think not only about what AI can do but about the kind of society we want to build alongside it.

Julian sits down with Ramesh Raskar and Maria Gorskikh for an urgent conversation about the rise of proactive AI and the emerging “agentic web”. This isn’t about chatbots answering questions anymore, it’s about autonomous agents that can send emails, execute tasks, coordinate schedules, and interact with other agents without constant prompting.

As open-source tools like OpenClaw make it easier for developers to spin up agents, we may be witnessing a shift from centralized AI models to a world where anyone can run their own personal AI. But with that power comes serious risk, from malicious “skills” and prompt injections to identity spoofing, financial manipulation, and large-scale bot collusion. Without the right infrastructure, guardrails, and accountability, this new frontier could quickly become chaotic.

And yet, the upside is enormous. They explore a future where billions of people, from farmers to students to entrepreneurs, have access to affordable, personalized AI agents working on their behalf. A new creator economy could emerge, where agents handle coordination and repetitive work, freeing humans to focus on creativity and problem-solving. As the Arctic melts and critical minerals become the new oil, Greenland has gone from forgotten ice sheet to geopolitical prize. In this Davos street debate, world leaders, policy insiders, and global citizens clash over an unthinkable question: should Greenland become a U.S. state or would that cross the line into modern-day imperialism? Some argue it’s a strategic necessity in a world racing toward conflict with China and Russia. Others warn it would shatter NATO, alienate Europe, and revive the ugliest chapters of colonial history.

What starts as a conversation about minerals and defense quickly spirals into something darker: who really gets to decide the fate of a nation? Is this about security or power? Cooperation or coercion? And if borders can change when resources are at stake, is any country truly safe?

This street interview took place in Davos, Switzerland, during the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, where global leaders, policymakers, executives, and media gather to discuss geopolitics, economics, and global risk. Featuring voices including Kerry Kennedy, @billboardchris, an Arctic defense and security expert, and many more.

  50. MIT Professor on AI: "We Have 18 Months Before It's Game Over"

What happens when artificial intelligence stops being something we use and starts becoming something that shapes who we are? Lees meer

Julian sits down with Ramesh Raskar for a hopeful, wide-ranging conversation about where AI is actually headed and where it should go. Instead of leaning into the usual doomsday fears, they talk about a different risk, a future where intelligence is centralized, creativity is squeezed out, and people slowly lose their sense of purpose.

They discuss what an “agentic” future could look like, one where everyone has their own AI agent working on their behalf, not owned by a company but shaped by personal values, goals, and lived experience. They talk about how this could transform healthcare, education, and work, not by replacing humans, but by amplifying what makes human contribution meaningful. There’s a strong emphasis on dignity, pride in craft, and why losing those things could be more damaging than job loss itself.

Ramesh Raskar is an MIT professor, researcher, and inventor whose work spans artificial intelligence, imaging, robotics, and decentralized systems. He has led research teams at Google, Facebook, and Apple, and focuses on building human-centered AI technologies designed to support shared prosperity.

    What You’ll Learn:

Why centralized AI risks reducing human agency and purpose

How decentralized AI agents could reshape work, education, and healthcare

The difference between efficiency-driven AI and human-centered intelligence

Why loss of meaning may be a bigger threat than job displacement

How shared prosperity depends on ownership, not just access

What an “agentic society” could look like in practice

Why AI literacy is essential for the decade ahead

How adaptability and learning-to-learn shape human flourishing
