This is the companion audio for the article "Take Your AI Off the Internet: A Practical Guide to Running Local LLMs" and for the Local LLM Downloads hub. Runtime is about 14–16 minutes. Recorded October 2026. It follows up the local LLM mention in Episode 61.
Back in Episode 61 I mentioned, almost in passing, that you can run an AI model on your own computer, with no account, no cloud and no log on anyone else's server. A lot of you wrote in asking how. This dispatch answers that.
First, the why. When you use a hosted chatbot, your words are processed on someone else's machines, and from there they're within reach of courts, policy changes and product decisions you'll never hear about. In 2025 a federal court ordered OpenAI to preserve ChatGPT conversations, including ones users had deleted. In December the court ordered 20 million de-identified chat logs handed over in the New York Times copyright case, and in January it upheld that order over OpenAI's objection. Separately, a "make this discoverable" checkbox put private shared chats into Google search results. Nobody was hacked in either case. The data simply lived somewhere other than the user's own machine.
Then, the how. I explain what an "open-weight" model actually is and how much hardware you need (8, 16 or 32 GB of RAM). I walk through setup on Mac, Windows and Linux using LM Studio, the easy path, or Ollama, the engine. That includes the right way to handle Ollama's "pipe this script into your shell" Linux installer.
Finally, staying safe while you do it. That covers how to use the Local LLM Downloads hub, why you should prefer safetensors and GGUF files (a model file can be malware), how to verify what you downloaded, the Ollama cloud setting to switch off, and why you should never open Ollama to the internet.

- Nextcloud for contacts, and calendars. I sync with my Pixel 7 Pro running GrapheneOS using DavX. Photos are backed up to Nextcloud and I use ente.io as a safety backup.
- Bitwarden for my password manager
- VPNS: Mullvad (paid wtih Monero and 10% discount), iVPN.net & Proton VPN (though I don't use much they are slow)

Correction on Tornado Cash
Tornado Cash was a DeFi app for mixing Ethereum. I said on the previous episode that it was for Bitcoin but I want to be clear that it was being used for Ethereum mixing. Essentially the system worked using smart contracts to send and receive ethereum.
When you deposit your funds, it issues a receipt to withdraw the same amount. It breaks the chain of ownership or anonymize your funds by breaking the connection to the original wallet.
So because the US Treasury has sanctioned the use of Tornado Cash then anyone who has received any ethereum could be sanctioned. But Tornado Cash is still functioning because it runs on the block-chain and is accessible via IPFS network. IPFS is a peer-to-peer (p2p) storage network. Content is accessible through peers located anywhere in the world, that might relay information, store it, or do both. IPFS knows how to find what you ask for using its content address rather than its location.
These three principles build upon each other to enable the IPFS ecosystem. Let's start with content addressing and the unique identification of content.

What Is Pretty Good Phone Privacy?
Mobile Network Privacy: Mobile Pro and Mobile Core
Pretty Good Phone Privacy (PGPP) is a fundamentally new type of service that gives you private mobile connectivity. In traditional mobile networks, you are identifiable by your IMSI, a permanent, globally unique identifier that is stored in your SIM card and sent to mobile towers when your phone is on. Because your IMSI never changes, and your phone connects to towers based on location and signal strength, mobile networks can track who you are and where you are located at all times. Because of this, the IMSI leaves an indelible location history, which has been used by mobile providers and numerous others, for virtually every person on the planet. IMSIs are also targeted and captured by third-party attackers using devices known as IMSI catchers, also known as Stingrays, to track a user’s presence and activity in a given location.
Because the IMSI number is tied to the SIM and used during communication with cell towers, it can also be used to track the movements of the user. In that case, the cell towers’ location is used to triangulate your position.
