109 - Pet by Akwaeke Emezi
7 december 2022 · 58 min
In Episode 109, Gen and Jette discuss Pet by Akwaeke Emezi. We absolutely loved this one and are now planning on reading everything Emezi has written, including Bitter, the prequel story to Pet. Lees meer
Show Notes:
This episode is in keeping with our annual December tradition of replacing a discussion about a certain series featuring a certain boy wizard in favour of queer, and especially trans, stories. Check out last year's discussion of A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee, and our episode on Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas from the year before that.
The name of the poem by Dylan Thomas featuring the line "rage against the dying of the light" is called "Do not go gentle into that good night." Another poem that Gen loves is, "In my craft or sullen art." The radio play that she has yet to read is called Under Milk Wood.
Emezi's novel You Made A Fool of Death with Your Beauty, their first romance, is partially inspired by Florence + The Machine's song "Hunger." That might be enough for us to give romance a try.

099 - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
20 juli 2022 · 1 uur 5 min
In Episode 98, Gen and Jette discuss The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This episode falls into our #BookstagramMadeMeDoIt series, which lets us jump on the train of a popular book to see what all the fuss is about and if it lives up to the hype. Lees meer
Evelyn Hugo has been all over Instagram and TikTok and we can see why! Just like with Daisy Jones and the Six, Jenkins Reid crafts an impeccable fictional story that slides so neatly into real history that you'd think it actually happened. If you're looking for your next summer read, look no further!
Show Notes
We might just be Taylor Jenkins Reid super fans now. Time to work our way through her entire catalogue. And maybe reread Daisy Jones?
It was a lot of fun looking into the Taylor Jenkins Reid Universe, which loosely connects Daisy Jones, Evelyn Hugo, and Malibu Rising in the same fictional history. We suspect her latest book, Carrie Sotto is Back, also fits into this timeline. As far as we can tell, Evelyn's third husband, Mick Riva, is the common thread in all of them.
Daisy Jones and the Six has been adapted into a mini series and is set to release some time this year, though we don't have an exact date yet. All we can say is: Give it to us now! (We may or may not have a bonus episode once we've watched it.)
We're celebrating our 100th episode next! Let us know your favourite episodes and what you'd like to see more from us in the future.

By Taylor Jenkins Reid – Daisy Jones and the Six, Malibu Rising, Carrie Sotto is Back

097 - A Waiter In Paris by Edward Chisholm
22 juni 2022 · 1 uur 4 min
In Episode 97, Gen and Jette collaborate with one of their favourite Toronto indie publishers, House of Anansi, to give you a preview of one of their upcoming new releases, A Waiter in Paris by Edward Chisholm. Lees meer
This memoir chronicles Chisholm's time in Paris, scraping out a living in a restaurant as he works his way up from runner to waiter. As former barista/servers/etc., we loved this deep dive into the world of waiting tables. We did a lot of reminiscing and commiserating because it turns out, no matter where you are, waiting tables doesn't really change.

095 - Who Knew We Loved Science Fiction?!
25 mei 2022 · 47 min
In Episode 95, Gen and Jette finally take on the science fiction genre! We've put it off until now because neither of us thought we read much sci-fi, but it turns out we've read more than we thought and we actually love it! A lot of the books we talk about in this one might not be the ones that first come to mind when you think of sci-fi, but that's what makes the genre so interesting — there's so much variety! Lees meer
SHOW NOTES
Did you catch Jette's not-reference to Paper Houses?
We're going to cook up a recommendation list for getting into science fiction based on books you already like to read.
The Octavia Butler book about vampires is not Lilith's Brood, it's Fledgling.
Predictably, we couldn't help talking about some films as well. There's so much great science fiction out there!
Is sci-fi secretly our favourite genre?
We did our best to round up everything mentioned in the episode and list it below, but we talked about so much some things may have slipped through the cracks.

094 - Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo
11 mei 2022 · 48 min
In Episode 94, Gen and Jette discuss their latest book club book — Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. We couldn't stop talking about the style and structure of this novel written in verse. Acevedo writes such a full and vivid narrative even with her pared back style and we're in awe. Lees meer
Show Notes
Keep an eye out for Elizabeth Acevedo's newest book, still untitled, expected to be released next year.
Yahaira's wonderful girlfriend's name is Dre and we love her makeshift fire escape garden.
We absolutely loved the way Acevedo used the visual layout of the words on the page to emphasize different words, phrases, and scenes. It got us thinking back to our episode about Because the Sun by Sarah Burgoyne.
Our next book club book is the thriller Home Before Dark by Riley Sager. We'll be discussing it in our first episode of July.
Next episode we'll be doing another genre breakdown, this time talking science fiction. It's a genre that covers a lot of ground and we can't wait to dive in.

093 - Fun Home by Alison Bechdel
27 april 2022 · 45 min
In Episode 93, Gen and Jette kick off their graphic novel book club with Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. This graphic novel memoirs chronicles Bechdel's complex relationship with her father, and she does it with nuance, honesty, and humour. It's a fantastic read and we nerd out a lot on literature, as well as the graphic novel form. Lees meer
Show Notes:
Fun Home was adapted as a musical and won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 2015.
After finishing Fun Home, we both immediately wanted to read Are You My Mother?, Bechdel's second graphic novel memoir that chronicles, you guessed it, her relationship with her mother.
We go off on a few literary tangents (as you do) and ponder James Joyce, the Fitzgeralds, the Alcotts, and Thoreau, among others.
You may recognize Bechdel's name from the famous Bechdel test, wherein a movie will pass the test so long as two female characters speak to each other about something other than a man.

Our next episode is a book club episode and we'll be discussing Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo.

The cast is stacked in this film and rewatching it was a fun exercise in exclaiming, "I forgot they were in this!"

10 november 2021 · 50 min
Look alive, Sunshine! It's time for another Book Club episode. Gen and Jette discuss The True Live of the Fabulous Killjoys: California by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan. It's a great conversation about storytelling, graphic novels, and dystopian aesthetics. Lees meer
Show notes:
Killjoys may have begun as an idea for a comic book series, but it first came to life on My Chemical Romance's album Danger Days. The graphic novel picks up where that story leaves off.
Watch the music videos for "Na Na Na" and "SING" for more Killjoys content and to see the where the aesthetic of the comic was born.
The sequel to Killjoys: California is available in a collected edition called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem.
We came up with about five different essays we could write based on this book and had a great discussion about the use of colour.
Gerard Way was cofounder of the DC imprint Young Animal, but both Killjoys and Umbrella Academy were published by Dark Horse Comics.
