  4. Take It Personal (Ep 120: J Dilla Tribute Pt. 2)

    Afspelen
Episode 120 is part 2 of our J Dilla Tribute, it also marks the start of our 7th season doing Take It Personal. We started this podcast in 2016 as an excuse to get together and listen to some great music. Who knew this would bring so many people together from all walks of life? We went from talking about rappers on this show to eventually interviewing the very best of them. Rappers we grew up idolizing, we were "giving them their flowers" before that became a played-out term with our titanic tributes. Lees meer

We're putting the explanation point on the remarkable young career James Yancey had. This extra large episode features 3 mixes clocking in over 4+ hours with early Jay Dee production as well as collaborations with Madlib, Phat Kat, Illa J, Q-Tip, Common, Frank-n-Dank, Chino XL, Royce Da 5'9, DOOM, Raekwon, De La Soul, The Roots and Black Star to name a few.

This 2-part tribute features over 125 Dilla tracks and has a runtime of 7.5 hours. This is simply our way saying, J Dilla changed our lives.

  5. Take It Personal (Ep 119: J Dilla Tribute Pt. 1)

    26 maart 2025 · 2 uur 56 min

    Afspelen
Episode 119 is our tribute to one of the greatest producers of all-time, J Dilla. Whether you knew him as Jon Doe, Jay Dee, J. Yancey, Dilla Dog or just Dilla, you knew him as the most influential producer hip-hop has seen in the last quarter century. J Dilla wasn't just a musical genius. He reinvented the way hip-hop was being created. His passion, imagination and the prowess displayed on each track is something we'll never be able to duplicate. J Dilla was simply ahead of his time. Lees meer

On part 1, we're playing the essentials from The Pharcyde, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, The Roots, Janet Jackson, Q-Tip and of course Slum Village. We focus on the solo career of Dilla as well as the collaborations with Madlib, Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM and Jay Electronic.

Whether we're talking about Pete Rock, Preemo, Q-Tip, RZA or even Madlib, you can immediately identify their signature sound. They hold a special place in our hearts, but J Dilla's place in different. His music hits different. We can't think of a better way to close-out 2022 than with this 2-part tribute in honor of James Dewitt Yancey.

Like Joni Mitchell says "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone."

  10. Take It Personal (Ep 118: A Tribute to Tame One)

    Afspelen
Episode 118 is our tribute to the late, great Tame One. We love doing tributes on Take It Personal, but we absolutely hate having to do a tribute them under these conditions. We've lost many great artists over the years like Biz Markie, Kangol Kid, MF DOOM, Prince Markie Dee, Gift of Gab, Shock G, Zumbi, Black Rob, Double K, Len Hub (The Roots), Malik B, DJ Kay Slay, Coolio, Takeoff, Pop Smoke, Hurricane G, Ecstasy, Blacastan and Don Newkirk to name a few. And it feels like we're still getting over the loss of Prodigy, Phife Dawg, Sean Price, Pimp C and Guru. Lees meer

On this episode, we're honoring the art created by Rahem Brown, better known as Tame One, one half of the Artifacts and an intricate part of New Jersey hip-hop movement. Tame entered our lives in the early 90s with witty lyrics, an appreciation for graffiti and a passion for hip-hop. He went on to give us two remarkable albums with El Da Sensei as the Artifacts before he took a journey into his solo career. On this tribute we're showcasing everything from the early days with El and Redman to the Eastern Conference days. We got everything from the Leak Bros to The Weathermen to all his great collabos with artists like Del, Sean Price, Hussein Fatal, Yak Ballz and Govna Mattic.

This is our Tame One Tribute. We hope you enjoy it!

On this flashback of Take It Personal, we're hitting you with a combined remastered version of episodes 29 & 30, our Native Tongues Tribute. This 12+ hour episode features music from the most important, and influential hip-hop collective we've ever seen. Lees meer

With the help and hustle of both DJ Red Alert and Chris Lighty, the Native Tongues were a force to be reckoned with. The Jungle Brothers paved the way for groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep. Prior to The Flava Unit, Queen Latifah was this crew's Den mother. Along with her protege Monie Love, they were both instrumental in helping the female movement in hip-hop.

The Native Tongues provided plenty of classic albums, countless anthems and produced more offspring than Joe Jackson. The Natives helped jumpstart the careers of Busta Rhymes, Chi-Ali, Mos Def, J Dilla and have influenced artists such as Brand Nubian, K.M.D., Common, The Beatnuts, Bush Babees, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Kanye West, Black Star, Pharrell, Hieroglyphics, The Pharcyde, J5, Kedrick Lamar, Pusha T, Andre 3000 and even Nas. They've influenced everyone!

The Native Tongue brand was strong despite some internal conflict, growing pains and different career paths. They left an everlasting impression on hip-hop. It's our privilege to present to you our Native Tongues Tribute!

On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 32, our Pharoahe Monch Tribute. This 5 1/2 hour episode was recorded in 2018 and is now remastered in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Stress: The Extinction Agenda. Lees meer

We felt it was not only necessary, but equally important to do a tribute in honor of one of the greatest lyricists hip-hop has had.

Additionally, what would a Take It Personal tribute be without the man of the hour stopping by to share some stories? We talk Paul C., Extra P, and even Kool Keith. We find out what it was like being passed on by Russell Simmons (along with Nas) and signing with Disney.

We break down the Stress: Extinction Agenda album cover. We touch on his relationship with O.C. and the fact he thought the Time's Up beat was pretty wack. We talk Rawkus, ghostwriting for Puffy, sampling, sports, what went wrong on The Equinox; yes, we went there.

We asked everything and he answered everything, including the possibility of an OK reunion. We also have 86 tracks displaying the brilliance of Pharoahe Monch. If you haven't heard this episode before or need a refresher, tap in because this one is TIP classic material.

We hope this masterpiece will be up there with them.

Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to. Lees meer

We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out.

We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso.

We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast.

I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them."

Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March.

    Enjoy the discussion.

Episode 103 is the 3rd installment of our indie hip-hop tribute series. This time, we’re joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it? Lees meer

We've got joints by Non Phixion, Saukrates, Natural Elements, Jigmastas, J-Live, Arsonists, Company Flow, Cage, All Natural, Rascalz, Cannibal Ox, J.U.I.C.E., Sir Menelik, Kool Keith, Ill Advised, Choclair, Mr. Lif, Mike Zoot and of course, The High & Mighty.

What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical.

Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. Enjoy the show!

  36. Take It Personal (Ep 101: Ode to 1990)

    6 februari 2025 · 3 uur 4 min

    Afspelen
Episode 101 is an ode to 1990. Lees meer

This was a defining moment in hip-hop as the musical tides started to turn. The 80s were done, as were many of the styles and genres to come out of that decade.

Rap dominated the airwaves and took over pop culture as we know it. While both MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were at the top of the pop charts, it was influential voices like Chuck D, Ice Cube and Shock G that provided the sounds cherished to this day.

The Afrocentrism movement was huge as legendary groups such as X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Public Enemy provided anthems throughout 1990. That same year, we had classics that were bound to wreck your body and say turn the party out…Treat ‘Em Right, Bonita Applebum, The Humpty Dance and Jingling Baby.

It wasn’t just music, the movies that came out in 1990 still hold a special place in our hearts. Watching House Party over and over. Laughing at Full Force saying everyone smells like pussies or when Chill couldn’t stop bumping the table while dragon-breath Bilal would try to mix.

Who doesn’t watch all of Goodfellas every time it’s on TV? Doesn’t everyone do the same yearly Christmas ritual and watch Home Alone?

Air Jordan V’s were on every kid’s feet. The Simpson’s were on every kid’s TV. Posters of Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were on every kid’s bedroom wall. It wasn't just any year, it was one of the greatest. On episode 101, we pay homage to one of the most important years in hip-hop -- 1990!
