Fratello Talks: Recent Shifts In The Watch Industry
5 november 2026 · 44 min
The watch industry is constantly changing, whether through new product launches, shifting ownership structures, or brands reassessing their place in the market. Some developments have implications that go well beyond a single release. They can influence a brand's direction, its identity, and the watches it chooses to make. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Jorg, RJ, and Lex discuss a few recent developments that caught their attention. The conversation starts with news about Ebel following its acquisition by F.P.Journe and Chanel. From there, the trio turns to Zenith, examining its current position and how its proposed restructuring might impact the brand's future. It's an opportunity to look beyond individual watches and consider the wider changes happening across the industry. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: Navigating The Japanese Watch Market
3 november 2026 · 1 uur 6 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we return after more travel and a birthday celebration to discuss the Japanese watch market. While the topic may sound quizzical, the Land of the Rising Sun presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. We talk about this and more! Lees meer
As watch collectors, many of us visit various online marketplaces when looking for our next purchase. Often, we find the best opportunities in Japan. In fact, the sheer quantity of watches available in the faraway nation boggles the mind. There are also "JDM-only" pieces, which speak to the country's influence on brands at home and in Europe. Whether a collector is visiting the country or shopping from abroad, interesting cultural differences can make the buying experience unique.
Handgelenkskontrolle
We kick off our episode on the Japanese watch market with a return to Germany. Balazs explains a recent run-in with the healthcare system that felt like trying to untie a Gordian knot. We then turn our attention to television and the cornucopia of fantastic recent shows. Mobland, The Gentlemen, Slow Horses, Tulsa King, The Terminal List, and Below are just some of the series we've been enjoying. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his vintage Rolex GMT-Master 1675. Balazs has opted for the 2023 Fratello × Nivada Grenchen Racing Chronograph.
The Japanese watch market
For our main topic, we share our experiences of buying and shopping for watches in Japan. We've both traveled there and purchased watches in person. However, we've also dealt with online sellers and marketplaces. For starters, it's important to note that before FOMO became a trend in the West, Japan was the originator of fervor for limited-edition products. Watches are just one example of the excitement Japanese fans feel for special drops. This helps explain why brands often produce Japan-only models or variants. We also mention Sinn and how Japan is, interestingly, one of its most important …

In this special on-location episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho and RJ are joined by Daniela Pusch, unit and editorial director of WatchTime. Recorded live at WatchTime Düsseldorf, the conversation explores the role of watch fairs today, how they have evolved, and what makes events like this valuable to both brands and collectors. Fratello On Air: Sébastien Chaulmontet On Sellita, Albishorn, And The Love Of Vintage Watches
27 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 30 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, Balazs is alone in the driver's seat while Mike enjoys his much-deserved birthday time off. Join us in wishing a happy (belated) birthday to "Mike Stockton from London, England." Instead, we invited our friend Sébastien Chaulmontet, Sellita’s head of innovation and the man behind the brand Albishorn, for a chat. We will cover a wide range of topics, from vintage to modern and in-house movements. Lees meer
Sébastien and Balazs have been talking about having him on the podcast for a long time. His professional journey in the industry is astonishing. Besides, he is an avid vintage (chronograph) collector. Lastly, the excitingly different brand Albishorn is also his baby. Mike’s absence was the perfect opportunity to invite Sébastien for a casual talk. We split the podcast into three parts — Sellita and AMT, Albishorn, and vintage watches.

Fratello Talks: Picking Watches For James Bond Villains
22 oktober 2026 · 25 min
James Bond has worn some memorable watches over the years, but what about the people standing in his way? A villain's watch needs to do more than tell the time. It can hint at character, signal status, or offer a subtle clue about the wearer. So, which watches would suit the villains of the Bond universe? In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho, RJ, and Jorg turn their attention to the other side of 007's world. They pick watches for Bond villains, considering the characters' personalities and the details that might make a particular watch a good fit. We won't reveal their choices here. You'll have to listen to find out which watches each of them picked and whether the others agree. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: What Will It Take To Turn The Vintage Speedmaster Market Around?
20 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 13 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we have an open chat about what it might take to turn the vintage Speedmaster market around. Let's face it: it has been quiet for a long time. We'd love nothing more than to see the enthusiasm return and hear your thoughts on what could help. Enjoy the show! Lees meer
Oof, it's been a hot minute since the vintage Speedmaster was all the rage. Then again, we could say that about the vintage market as a whole. But when it comes to our favorite Omega, we long for the halcyon days of hot releases, newly uncovered history, and fan outreach. Still, 2026 is very different from the pre-pandemic period. A lot has changed, so perhaps the old ways of stirring up excitement might not prove as effective. Or would they be seen as even more authentic in today's Speedy world?
Handgelenkskontrolle
This week, we have about 35 minutes of watch- and non-watch-related banter before we move on to the main topic. We start with Balazs's recent trip to New York City, where he visited WatchTime New York and Windup. He also took time to do some work while in the Big Apple. We reflect on his trip, some folks he met, and the general vibe. Mike shares a fun anecdote from a recent trip to Amsterdam where he met one of our listeners in the most unlikely of forums. Then, we talk about Balazs's flight back from New York on a Lufthansa A340-600. It turns out that this was the last flight for the old four-engine long-haul plane before its retirement. This was a festive affair! For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is wearing his favorite travel watch, the Casio G-Shock GW-B5600-2ER. Mike is on topic with his 2018 Speedmaster Professional Speedy Tuesday 2 "Ultraman."
The vintage Speedmaster market
If we measure vintage watch collecting in five-year cycles, anyone who entered the hobby during this period might question if the vintage Speedmaster was ever popular. Indeed, it has been a long time since the seminal chronograph made front-page auctio…

Fratello Talks: The Omega Speedmaster Reduced
15 oktober 2026 · 33 min
For many watch enthusiasts, the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is untouchable. But there’s another model that has earned its rightful place in the collection — the Speedmaster Reduced. Smaller, automatic, and often more accessible on the pre-owned market, it offers a different take on one of Omega’s best-known chronographs. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho, RJ, and Gerard look back at the origins of the Speedmaster Reduced and its place in the wider Speedmaster story. They discuss what made it appealing, the quirks and technical issues that prospective owners should know about, and how it compares with the modern Speedmaster 38 and the latest evolution of the smaller Speedmaster. Fratello Talks: Sylvain Berneron
8 oktober 2026 · 33 min
Today, in a special episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho and Lex are in Geneva for a chat with independent watch designer and entrepreneur Sylvain Berneron. The conversation kicks off with Berneron’s career in design, his time at major watch companies, and his decision to establish a brand of his own. Berneron’s background is somewhat unusual for an independent watchmaker. Trained in fine arts and industrial design, he began his career at BMW before spending five years with Richemont and another five as chief product officer and board member at Breitling. In September 2022, he decided to leave this comfortable scenario and create the Berneron brand, giving him the creative freedom to explore ideas that would have been difficult to pursue within a large organization. Lees meer
The result was the Mirage, introduced in 2023. From the start, Berneron approached the watch from the movement outward, allowing the unusual asymmetrical caliber to dictate the case's shape. The watch quickly attracted attention for that combination of mechanics, proportions, and design.

Fratello On Air: Are You Safe Online As A Watch Collector?
6 oktober 2026 · 1 uur 6 min
Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. We're back from the road with your latest dose of watch talk. Today, we're entertaining a topic from one of our favorite listeners, Roy! No, we're not talking about Speedos by the pool, but we're trying to answer whether it's safe to discuss our hobby online. Enjoy the show! Lees meer
Is it safe to discuss watches online? Well, we think the answer is challenging, but as we'll see, it depends. Today, we touch on several points regarding Roy's topic and even share some of the advice we follow. No, this isn't another big-city-safety discussion. This time, it's about online safety.
Handgelenkskontrolle
Before answering whether it's safe to chat about timepieces online, we cover a wide range of topics in our banter session. Regarding TV, we've been on a tear. The Hunter Wives, Mobland, Slow Horses, The Wargame, and Lanterns have all graced our big screens recently. Then, we get into a discussion about German watches and whether or not they ultimately leave us cold because of their instrument-like styling. Next, Balazs mentions the 1998 Game 4 NBA Finals Michael Jordan jersey that sold for an astounding US$12.3 million! On top of that, his former Ferrari 550 Maranello hammered for a record US$2.7 million. That's crazy! Balazs also shares a recent trip to the Black Forest, where he attended a release event for the latest Hanhart 417 ES Steve McQueen model. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his Citizen Promaster BN0220 after some lawn work over the weekend. Meanwhile, Balazs is a hipster with the surprise-hit DWC Terra. Look out for a hands-on review soon!
Is it safe online to post and discuss watches?
Our eternally tan friend Roy sent a lengthy topic suggestion. We've done our best to boil it down to his concerns. He brought up instant-messaging platforms and their security. Perhaps more timely, though, he mentioned the current word that dominates most conversations — "AI." In other words, with AI truly spreading like …

Fratello Talks: Can Brand Ambassadors Help Create A New Generation Of Watch Enthusiasts?
2 oktober 2026 · 43 min
Brand ambassadors have long been part of the watch industry. From actors and athletes to musicians and explorers, these familiar faces help bring brands' watches to a wider audience. But can that visibility do more than sell watches? Can it spark interest in horology among people who might never have given the hobby a second thought? Lees meer
In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho, RJ, and Daan discuss the role of brand ambassadors and their potential to introduce watches to a new generation of enthusiasts. We look at what makes an ambassador effective, whether a celebrity connection can translate into genuine enthusiasm, and how these partnerships fit into an industry that increasingly reaches people through social media and popular culture.

Fratello On Air: Does Watch Financing Help Or Hurt The Hobby?
29 september 2026 · 1 uur 7 min
Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. We're back after a couple of weeks under the weather and ready to talk watches. But we're not just talking about them; we're also asking whether watch financing has helped or hurt the hobby we all enjoy. Perhaps that's an easy question, but the tougher one is whether we'd do it! We hope you enjoy the episode. Lees meer
Unless you've been living under a rock for the last several years, it's impossible not to notice the easy offers of watch financing on every retailer's website. In fact, paying in installments is even an option on eBay! Today, we'll talk about the effect on the industry and whether we'd ever consider it.
Handgelenkskontrolle
This week, after a brief discussion about our recent maladies, we discuss the Laver Cup. Mike attended the final day in London and reflects on the experience. This kicks off a discussion about Rolex, the brand's sponsorship of the tournament, and some of the other watches seen on the players and coaches. Next, Balazs mentions Michael Jordan's former Ferrari 550 Maranello, which is currently up for auction on Joopiter. Then, Mike mentions the Donut Watch, which arrived soon after our last episode. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is wearing the new Albishorn Type X-Graph, a cool chronograph with a polycarbonate dial. Mike is rather boring because he's still wearing the same watch as three weeks ago! It's his trusty Rolex Submariner 14060M.
Watch financing
Our longtime listener Cezary recently wrote to us asking whether watch financing has been a boon to the industry. Well, the short answer is that, of course, it has benefitted sellers. That said, is it an option buyers should consider? Mike recalls buying his Rolex Explorer 14270 back in 1998 using a 0% store credit card financing scheme over 12 months. It worked, but we're sure the scheme often backfired on buyers. Furthermore, we can imagine it's tempting to purchase a watch that's tough to find when the funds aren't readily availabl…

Fratello Talks: If We Could Only Keep One Watch From Our Collection
24 september 2026 · 29 min
What if you had to choose just one watch from your entire collection and let everything else go? No backups, no rotation, and no keeping that one watch you rarely wear “just in case.” In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho, RJ, and Daan take on that particularly difficult hypothetical. The interesting part is that choosing one watch isn't necessarily about picking the most expensive, technically impressive, or historically significant piece. A collection can contain watches that serve very different purposes, and personal attachment can matter just as much as specifications. So what happens when all those factors have to compete for a single spot? Tune in to find out. Lees meer

Fratello Talks: Our Favorite Vintage Rolex Watches
17 september 2026 · 45 min
When it comes to vintage watches, few brands have as much depth as Rolex. Over more than a century, the company has produced an enormous range of models, references, and variations that have become firmly established among collectors. From tool watches built for specific purposes to understated everyday models, there's plenty to explore beyond the obvious choices. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho, Jorg, and Max discuss their favorite vintage Rolex models. Each has selected two watches that stand out due to their design, history, collectibility, and simply how much they enjoy them. The vintage Rolex catalog has plenty of familiar names, but it's interesting to see what references the guys gravitate toward. If you want to find out which watches made the cut, tune in! Lees meer

Fratello Talks: The Vintage Watches We'd Buy Under €5,000
10 september 2026 · 40 min
Vintage watches can seem intimidating when you first start looking. There are unfamiliar references, decades of production changes, questions about originality, and the ever-present possibility of an expensive service bill. But you don't necessarily need a huge budget to get into vintage watches. In fact, €5,000 opens up a surprisingly broad selection. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Max, the latter of whom usually spends his time behind the camera but joins the podcast for this episode. The three discuss the vintage watches they would consider buying with a €5,000 budget. Each participant has selected three watches, with a few honorable mentions along the way. As always, the aim isn't to create a definitive buying guide. Instead, it's an opportunity to explore some options at this price point and explain what makes them interesting. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: The Trends At Geneva Watch Days 2026
9 september 2026 · 1 uur 17 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we're both back home. Balazs has returned from Geneva, and Mike has come in after three weeks of being on the road. In this episode, we review the overarching trends at Geneva Watch Days 2026 along with the top releases. Enjoy the show! Lees meer
Well, another month has gone by, and the year's final big show in Geneva has passed. Geneva Watch Days is now in the rearview mirror, but were there any common trends among the many participating brands? We discuss that and more today.
Handgelenkskontrolle
We kick off our show with more travel fun. This time, our beloved Frankfurt Airport is back in focus. Sadly, it's not for the best reason. Despite the recent trends of trouble-free travel, the big transportation hub struck again! Next, Balazs shares news that Daniel Craig auctioned his 1959 Land Rover 109 Series II for $56,000. On television, we've been watching Lanterns, Lioness, Reacher, and Silo. Then, for the Handgelenkskontrolle, we've got a fun assortment. Mike is wearing his 2022 Sinn EZM 1.1 S, a limited-edition black-coated piece. Meanwhile, Balazs is wearing the first release from the Donut Watch Co., the Glazed. This fun watch was designed by Ming but shouldn't be confused with a Ming!
Trends at Geneva Watch Days 2026
This year, Balazs traveled to Geneva Watch Days 2026 while Mike spent the week working in Germany. So, one was in person while the other read and viewed the happenings via social media and our website. Regarding trends, we noticed an uptick in jump-hour watches, with brands like M.A.D.Editions and Bremont adding new models. Also, stone dials still seem to be in vogue. Naturally, Dennison continues to play this card.
From a color perspective, is deep red this year's purple? Bremont and Doxa certainly think so! Finally, smaller, thinner watches continue to be all the rage. Regarding some of the key releases, we mention the Gallet launch. Then, Balazs was quite taken with the Alpina Startime…

Fratello Talks: The Best Watches Of 2026 So Far
3 september 2026 · 48 min
We're already well into 2026, and the watch industry has given us plenty to talk about. From major releases by established manufacturers to smaller brands introducing watches that caught our attention, there has been no shortage of new things to discover. But which watches actually stand out? In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Jorg to look back at the first part of 2026 and discuss some of their favorite watches released so far. Rather than trying to create a definitive ranking, the conversation focuses on the watches that made an impression and why they stood out. With several months still left in the year, there is plenty of room for the list to change. That makes this a useful moment to take stock of what we've seen so far. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: The Modern Watches Destined To Become Classics
1 september 2026 · 1 uur 26 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we're both back in our respective homes before traveling again. Our show is about modern watches destined to become classics. Now, before you accuse us of focusing on money, erase those thoughts! We don't care about value. No, we are talking about watches that will be interesting several decades from now. Lees meer
Predicting the future is difficult, but we're here to try! This week, we're focused on modern watches that will command respect in the coming decades. As you'll see, we have some caveats. We chose relatively affordable pieces instead of haute horlogerie models. And we both chose three, for a total of six watches. We hope you enjoy the show!
Handgelenkskontrolle
We kick off our show with a bit of travel talk, but we quickly shift to the screen. Shows including I Will Find You, Lanterns, DTF St. Louis, and Half Man get mentions. Then, Balazs brings up an upcoming auction for the 1998 Game 3 NBA Finals jersey from Michael Jordan. It's listed on Joopiter and will be up for auction with an estimate of $10 to $15 million! We end our banter with a mention of Instagram user @dewesyy, who is filming the cobbling together of a Porsche 911 Targa from two rough beaters. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his trusty Rolex Submariner 14060M from 2011. Balazs is sporting his Ming 22.01 GMT Kyoto.
The modern watches we'll still be talking about in 20 years
We kick off our main topic by mentioning the one and only Bvlgari Octo Finissimo. While this watch may not fit every wrist, it's a stunning object. Perhaps Bvlgari will never take this watch out of production, or maybe it will evolve into something different. Still, there's no denying that the current watches are arresting. We think they'll still be grabbing attention in the long run.
For Mike's first pick, the original 42mm Tudor Pelagos in black, blue, or LHD still stands out as a landmark watch. More than the Black Bay, these were non-retro relea…

Fratello Talks: How Microbrands Have Changed The Game
27 augustus 2026 · 42 min
Microbrands have come a long way. What were once largely associated with inexpensive, enthusiast-driven watches have developed into a much broader part of the industry. Today, small brands are experimenting with materials, movements, manufacturing techniques, and design in ways that can make them serious alternatives to more established names. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho, Daan, and Jorg discuss how microbrands have changed the game. The conversation looks at how quality has improved, how ambitious design has become a defining characteristic of the segment, and why the price of entry has also changed considerably. The result is a microbrand landscape that looks very different from what existed a decade ago. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: The Watches That Got Away
25 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 13 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! We've been away for a couple of weeks, but we're now back (sort of) and have taken the time to record. This week, we're talking about the watches that got away. Yes, this is a sad episode, but not really. The fact is that both of us have been very lucky while collecting, but that doesn't mean that there weren't moments of heartbreak and regret. Enjoy the show! Lees meer
Since we last spoke, Mike has been in Brazil, back in America, and on a long weekend in Surrey to celebrate an anniversary. Meanwhile, Balazs has been in Hungary and Chicago before returning to the Fatherland. Yes, we've been keeping the road hot, but we've also been keeping our eyes peeled for watches.
Handgelenkskontrolle
We kick off our show with some travel talk. Mike fared well at Heathrow while Balazs enjoyed the typical antics at Frankfurt airport. We also discussed how America seems to have its passport control process in line now. Regarding shows and movies, we mentioned Crime 101, We Own This Town, Reacher, The Handmaid's Tale, and Lioness. Regarding the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike wore his Patek Philippe Calatrava 570 all weekend for the anniversary. Sadly, it needs a service after stopping in certain positions overnight. Balazs is sporting a more robust choice: his Rolex Submariner 5513.
The watches that got away
Regrets, we have a few. But, as mentioned, we've been extremely fortunate during our collecting journeys. We've found amazing watches along the way, but the misses always surface. Today, we each mention a few of the pieces that we didn't buy or sold and wished we'd kept. Mike kicks it off with a very rare Citizen. The Jet Para Water Professional reference JT1307051 is a unicorn among rare JDM pieces. Roughly six years ago, Mike was locked in a Yahoo! Japan battle for hours before backing down at roughly €4,500. Yes, that's a lot for a watch no one knows, but the fight was addictive. Sadly, it went on too long, and the price reached a…

Fratello Talks: Building A Dream Two-Watch Collection
20 augustus 2026 · 46 min
Two watches should be enough — at least in theory. If you had no budget limitations and could own only two watches, which would you choose? The challenge isn't simply to pick two favorites. With only two spots available, both watches need to earn their place. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Lex and RJ for a hypothetical collecting exercise. They each have to build a two-watch collection from scratch, without a budget limit, while keeping versatility in mind. That means considering everything from daily wearability and different occasions to the types of watches that complement each other rather than simply doing the same job. It's a deceptively difficult challenge. After all, choosing two great watches is easy. Choosing two that actually work together is another matter. Lees meer

Fratello Talks: Can A Case Back Make Or Break A Watch
13 augustus 2026 · 37 min
The case back is easy to overlook. After all, it spends most of its time pressed against your wrist, hidden from view. But turn a watch over, and the case back can reveal a completely different side of the design. For some collectors, a beautifully finished movement behind a sapphire crystal is one of the best parts of owning a mechanical watch. For others, a solid case back is the only appropriate choice, particularly for a tool watch. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Timo and RJ to discuss one of those seemingly minor details that can have a surprisingly big impact: the case back. More specifically, the trio discusses their feelings about display case backs, when they add something to a watch, and when they might actually take something away. Lees meer

First impressions matter, but they aren't always the last word. In the watch world, some of the most enduring designs are also among the most divisive. A watch that initially seems too large, too unconventional, or simply not to your taste can slowly grow on you as your experience develops. In many cases, understanding a watch's history and purpose or simply spending time with it on the wrist can completely change your perspective. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by RJ and first-time podcast guest Jorg to discuss the watches they learned to like over the course of their collecting journeys. Rather than focusing on instant favorites, the trio explores the pieces that took time to appreciate and why some watches reveal their qualities only after a second (or third) look. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: Rethinking The Definition Of Entry-Level Watches
28 juli 2026 · 1 uur 16 min
Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, Mike is in Florida, and Balazs is in Hungary. But we're here for you! In today's discussion, we tackle a listener suggestion. We're talking about entry-level watches and how brands approach this. Hint: it's very different today, with greater expectations from the buyer. Lees meer
Jumping into watches 15 to 20 years ago was a much different affair than now. Social media was barely present, prices were lower, and microbrands were almost non-existent. Our listener, Cezary, asked us to consider the brands representing the new entry-level category. We do that, but go further and talk about what this term means today and how larger brands interpret it. We hope you enjoy the show!
Handgelenkskontrolle
We start our show with some travel banter. Balazs had a lengthy drive to Hungary with his baby daughter. It was relatively challenging, but after one night and 12 hours on the open road, he is enjoying some family time. Meanwhile, Mike flew from London to Miami and slept most of the way before and after watching Marty Supreme. Once again, The Odyssey surfaces during our chat. So be it! Then, we discuss LeBron James and the surprise signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, our choices couldn't be more different. Mike is enjoying the pool and jogging with this durable Citizen Promaster BN0220. Balazs has dressed it up with his Rolex GMT-Master 1675.
Entry-level watches
When it comes to entry-level watches, our listener specifically asked about the Seiko sub-brand, Lorus, and whether it has replaced Seiko 5 as the low-cost option. The bottom line is that we don't think so. There's nothing wrong with these pieces, but they don't seem to be aimed at enthusiasts like the old 7S26 pieces were. Instead, it shifts our discussion to what we think has really occurred. As Seiko has raised prices, the company expects buyers to join the journey. In other words, the price of an affordable watch, as viewed by bra…

Fratello Talks: How Our Grail Watches Have Evolved Over Time

Ask any seasoned collector what his or her grail watch was upon first entering the hobby, and chances are the answer will be very different from what it is today. As our knowledge grows and our tastes mature, so too do the watches we aspire to own. Sometimes the grail gets bigger, sometimes it gets smaller, and occasionally, it turns out we already owned it without realizing. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by RJ and Thomas to reflect on how their grail watches have changed over the years. They discuss the influence of experience, changing priorities, and why the concept of a grail watch is often more fluid than collectors expect. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: Sleeper '90s And '00s Watches Worth Waking Up For
21 juli 2026 · 1 uur 24 min
Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we discuss sleeper watches from the '90s and '00s. It was an interesting period for timepieces, representing a transition from smaller, often quartz-powered models to mechanical ones. Let's just say that watchmakers were finding their collective feet again with interesting results. Still, there were gems, and we mention a handful. Lees meer
While Balazs was still a wee lad, Mike was checking out watch shops during the '90s and beginning to spend some of his hard-earned wages by the early '00s. One of the sleeper watches mentioned during this episode even found its way into his collection during that period. But there are plenty of other great pieces to consider. Some are already well known and often discussed, while some of our picks barely get a mention. Enjoy the show!
Handgelenkskontrolle
We launch our show with a chat about recent events. Mike has returned from a largely stress-free trip to Germany. Of course, England's punishing loss to Argentina in the World Cup semifinal makes an appearance. Ugh. Regarding the big screen, The Odyssey looks like a potential must-see. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs has joined the fray with his Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm. This is the original version that Mike reviewed way back in 2018. Compared to today's model, it uses an ETA 2801-2 with a 50-hour power reserve instead of the current Powermatic 80-derived caliber, meaning that it ticks with a higher frequency.
Mike, after wearing his 36mm Hamilton all week, has chosen a relatively similar watch for this episode. The old Seiko 5 7S26-02J0, otherwise known as the SNK805, is out in preparation for an article about it. When new, this piece was available on sites like Amazon for €40–80 and now commands prices of €150–250. While we miss the old days, we can't help but believe that this is still decent value for a relatively bulletproof, if not overly accurate, and timeless watch.

Fratello Talks: Watches Every Collector Should Own At Least Once

All watch collectors' journeys are different. Some focus on a single brand, while others enjoy exploring as many corners of the hobby as possible. Still, there are certain watches (or even categories of watches) that many enthusiasts seem to encounter sooner or later. They may not become permanent fixtures in every collection, but they often leave a lasting impression and help shape a collector's tastes. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by RJ and Thomas to discuss the watches they believe every enthusiast should own at least once. The idea isn't to create a definitive checklist or suggest that everyone should collect in the same way. Instead, it's about the watches that offer experiences every collector can learn from, whether they end up staying in the watch box or moving on to the next owner. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: Watches, Brands And Styles We Like, But Would Probably Never Buy
14 juli 2026 · 1 uur 22 min
Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we discuss watch brands, models, and styles that we like but would probably never buy. To be clear, this episode isn't about picking on anyone or anything. Instead, there are other reasons these pieces aren't on our wrists and may never be. Lees meer
Like any other hobby, watch collecting has its trends, its darlings, and its go-to models. We're aligned with many of these, but there are aberrations. In this episode, we touch upon some of those favorites and why we would likely never buy them. Funds, personal style, wrist size, and marketing strategy are just a few reasons. We hope you enjoy the discussion. Feel free to add your top near-hits in the comments section.
Handgelenkskontrolle
We open our show with an overview of the television shows we've been watching or plan to watch. Silo and Tip Toe are on our radars. Then, Balazs mentions a great throwback movie, The Fugitive. For the first time in ages, we also talk about shoes. Mike purchased a pair of Adidas Gazelle Inter Miami CF shoes, which are a bit funky for him. Balazs is also in on pink with his new Nike Air Jordan 1 Low × Travis Scott Muslin and Shy Pink shoes.
For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is still wearing his new Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm. Yes, it's still love. Balazs is in the Wimbledon spirit with an interesting pick. He's sporting the Maurice de Mauriac Rallymaster Swiss Tennis, a limited edition celebrating 130 years of the sport in the country.
Watches we like but would probably never buy
We kick off our main topic with the first watch that one of us would struggle to buy. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is a watch that Balazs admires, but it's unlikely to make it into his collection. He feels that the watch doesn't fit his more casual, sporty style. Mike also enjoys the famous polo watch, but it sits flat on his wrist. Next, Mike brings up a watch that he'd love to own, but it will sadly never come to pass. The Bvlgari Octo Finissi…

Fratello Talks: The Ultimate Omega Speedmaster Debate — Which Model Defines The Legend?
10 juli 2026 · 43 min
Few watches have inspired as many variations, stories, and passionate debates as the Omega Speedmaster. Over nearly seven decades, it has evolved from a racing chronograph into one of the most celebrated watches in horology, with countless references that appeal to a wide range of collectors. Ask three enthusiasts to name their favorite Speedmasters, and you're likely to get three very different answers. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by RJ and Gerard to discuss the Speedmasters that have left the biggest impression on them over the years. Rather than compiling a list of the rarest or most valuable references, the conversation focuses on the models they consider icons, whether because of their historical significance, their design, or the role they have played in their collecting journeys. Fratello On Air: These Are The Most Misleading Words In Watch Ads
7 juli 2026 · 1 uur 21 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! Apologies for the late publishing time, but a baby and the World Cup have us keeping odd hours. This week, we target a humorous but potentially dangerous subject. Misleading words when describing a watch, especially a vintage one, are rife within our hobby, so we attempt to shed light on them. Enjoy the show! Lees meer
Most of us have taken an English or social studies course and were required to read a newspaper article and cross out the non-factual content. Once all the fluff was gone, the paragraph was short, dry, but clear. Watch ads are often similar. However, they use words we all should understand, but the problem is they're often misused or simply wrong. Misleading words, here we come!
Handgelenkskontrolle
Yes, folks, we start the episode with some World Cup talk. An American and a Hungarian discuss the beautiful game with all the skill of leading pundits. Ha! But seriously, it continues to be a lot of fun, if not challenging, to watch in a European time zone. We mention a recent story about Rolex watches gifted to the Mexican team and their return. Then, we talk about the unfortunate-looking Axia watches for the event. When we're not watching football, the new season of Silo is on screen.
For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is test-driving the new limited-edition Angelus Tinkler. This quarter repeater debuted at Watches and Wonders 2026. It's a pricey little number, but the complication is truly uncommon. Stay tuned for a hands-on review! On the other wrist, Mike is wearing his latest acquisition, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm. Yes, this is the watch that will travel to Brazil, and it's fantastic so far! The size is great, and so are all the details.
Misleading words
If you've spent any time collecting pre-owned or vintage watches, you've read through numerous sale advertisements. While some get straight to the point, many shower us with overly positive adjectives and descriptors. The issue is tha…

Fratello Talks: Texture, Color, Stone: Let's Talk Dials
2 juli 2026 · 41 min
In all four seasons of the Fratello Talks podcast, we never dedicated an episode to watch dials. We thought it was about time to change that. The dial is one of the most important parts of a watch, as it's the "face" that gets the most attention when checking the time. It often draws the most attention and can be the reason for you to fall in love with a specific watch. Lees meer
Watch dials have never been more interesting. Whether you prefer classic enamel, traditional guilloché, intricate textures, eye-catching motifs, or even stone dials, today's market offers something for just about every taste and budget. Of course, true artisanal crafts such as hand-turned guilloché or marquetry still command a premium, but that's part of their appeal. In this episode, Daan, Lex, and Nacho dive into what many consider the defining feature of any watch: the dial. They discuss the materials, techniques, and designs that catch their eye and explore what makes a great watch face stand out.

Fratello On Air: What If We Started Collecting Watches Today?
30 juni 2026 · 1 uur 17 min
Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we ponder what would be different if we started collecting watches today. We're not allowing ourselves to roll in with all of the wisdom and hard knocks we've encountered. It would be a fresh start. Of course, we start with some other topics, per our custom. Lees meer
Is collecting watches different now than it was 10 or 20 years ago? You bet it is! In this episode, we consider life anew as a collector. Just imagine it! As you'll hear, our chat is more about where we think we'd begin as collectors and less about the exact pieces. Still, it's a lot of fun to consider.
Handgelenkskontrolle
Folks, when we recorded this episode, it was incredibly hot, so our conversation begins with a bit of moaning about the weather. However, we shift our attention to Mike's upcoming trip to Brazil and the so-called need for a dedicated watch. As of now, the colorful Bulova Snorkel, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm, and the new Victorinox Concept One Solar are the leading candidates. Then, the duo discusses the recently released Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Hi-Beat and U.F.A. Spring Drive models. The watches are lovely but have very much become connoisseur pieces.
For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is taking advantage of the heat. He has his Rolex Submariner 5513 on a NATO strap. Mike continues his Heuer exploration unabated. This week, he's wearing his Autavia 2446, a watch he purchased almost 10 years ago!
Collecting watches in 2026
Without a doubt, the largest change for new collectors is the advent of social media. Now, there are advertisements, live photos, videos, and sellers everywhere. It's a good thing, but it's also dangerous. We mention how we'd navigate these murky waters. Another massive change is the rise and maturation of microbrands. Whereas almost all collectors began with Seiko in the past, there are now scores of choices from worthy independent brands. Some, like Arken, even offer in-house-developed complica…

Before taking the helm at Breguet on October 1st, 2024, Kissling served as Vice President of Product at Omega. Fratello On Air: The Curious Case Of Car Watches
23 juni 2026 · 1 uur 10 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we talk about car watches, a curious subgenre within our hobby. Sure, the automobile industry is massive and has an equally huge fan base, but collaborations between watch and car brands often misfire. This draws us into a conversation about what we think of when pairing our vehicles with a watch. Whether it's for driving or attending a related event, what works best? Lees meer
Yes, in this episode, we tackle a challenging topic. Or, for some of our readers and listeners, perhaps it isn't a consideration at all. Car watches have been a focal point since wristwatches were first created. Angled dials meant to help drivers tell time at a glance have been produced by many marques. Then, an obvious complication associated with cars and racing is the chronograph. This is the most common platform for pieces made for Formula One teams and other automotive brands. We find many of these too on the nose, with overt branding that may only appeal to an owner of a car from the related maker. So, what should we wear when driving our fun cars or when heading off to a get-together or race?
Handgelenkskontrolle
Folks, it's hot out there, so we kick off our show by talking about the oppressive heat and the need for more air conditioning. Then, we mention the World Cup and all the great stories we've seen about visitors enjoying fun restaurants and customs in America. Once again, the Scots have endeared themselves to the locals. Travel-wise, Balazs just returned from Los Angeles, where he organized a Chrono24 get-together with our friends from the Spirit of Time podcast. Nearly 60 people came together at a Pasadena brewery to share their passion for watches. Mike visited the Icons of Porsche: Sunstede Silverstone Edition event celebrating Porsche's 75th anniversary in the UK. It was an incredible showing of cars and car culture. It's also what led us to our main topic — car watches.
For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is wearin…

Fratello Talks: The Watch Retail Experience
18 juni 2026 · 42 min
For many collectors, buying a watch is about far more than the watch itself. The experience of discovering, trying on, and ultimately purchasing a watch can shape how we feel about it long after it leaves the boutique. Yet not all retail experiences are created equal. Some leave a lasting impression for all the right reasons, while others can sour the excitement of a purchase before it even happens. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by RJ and Thomas to discuss the watch retail experience. From traditional authorized dealers and brand boutiques to online purchases and enthusiast-driven retailers, the trio explores what makes a great buying experience and why it still matters in an increasingly digital world. Fratello On Air: How Hype Can Help Or Hurt A Brand
16 juni 2026 · 1 uur 18 min
Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we talk about how hype can help or hurt brands. Naturally, there are plenty of other topics on the docket, including television, German culture, and more! Lees meer
Hype is a funny thing. Nearly everyone or every company wants it, but at some point, enough can be enough. From one-hit wonders to oversaturation, there is no shortage of examples of when a once-popular topic becomes played out or hackneyed. While we aren't here to predict which brands could fall prey to such a situation, we do talk about some models and strategies that are working well or flying very close to the sun.
Handgelenkskontrolle
We kick off our episode regarding hype with an interesting chat about German garden houses, known as Schrebergartens or Kleingartens. These little huts are an interesting sight for foreigners who often wonder if they are looking at a strange encampment. This discussion is connected to a chat on lawn art, including gnomes and orbs. For television, Mike has been watching Ponies on Sky, and Balazs just finished the Man on Fire series. Regarding the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike continues his Heuer love with the chocolaty Camaro 7220 NT. Balazs has brought back a fan favorite with the Omega Speedmaster Professional Speedy Tuesday 1.
Hype and its effects on brands
We kick off our discussion about hype and its potential effects on different companies with a brief tale about the luggage brand, Rimowa. It seems that unscrupulous sellers are now hawking counterfeit versions of the well-known aluminum suitcases. This raises a fundamental question: whether a brand begins to lose its luster when the hype is so large that fakes begin to appear. The answer is complex and inconsistent. Or what happens when a brand suddenly goes after a new set of buyers, which can turn off its traditional core fans? We pose these questions around Rolex, Omega, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Tudor, Grand Seiko, Ming, Panerai, and more. Brands such a…

Fratello Talks: Watches We Would Never Sell
11 juni 2026 · 33 min
All watch collectors have one watch that they will never part with. It might not be the most expensive piece in the collection, the rarest, or even the one that gets the most wrist time. Sometimes, a watch becomes irreplaceable for reasons that have very little to do with specifications, market value, or prestige. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Thomas to discuss the watches they simply couldn't imagine selling. Along the way, the conversation touches on sentimentality, personal milestones, and how our relationships with watches can evolve. While many collectors talk about buying and selling as part of the hobby, some pieces seem destined to stay. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: The Summer Watch Is Back!
9 juni 2026 · 1 uur 24 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! As promised, we've returned after a week with more banter and plenty of watch talk. This time around, we discuss the oft-mentioned summer watch and how we feel about it in 2026. Of course, we cover plenty of other subjects. Enjoy the show! Lees meer
Ah, the summer watch. If given little thought, it's easy to call it a diver and walk away, but we find that definition limiting. We eventually come to the topic but hit upon more than a handful of other watches. Settle in for a lengthy chat while you're prepping the pool or the back terrace for the season to come.
Handgelenkskontrolle
We begin our show discussing recent performances that we've attended. Mike returned from Beetlejuice The Musical, a fun romp that just opened in London. Balazs, on the other hand, saw Slowhand, aka Eric Clapton, in concert. Then, there's the long-awaited opening of Terminal 3 at your hosts' favorite airport, Frankfurt.
Mike shares a tip about pre-ordering duty-free there and the availability of a desirable bourbon. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is wearing one of his favorites, the Ming 17.09 on a Ming rubber strap. Mike is back into vintage with his Heuer Carrera 2447 S, a watch that recently accompanied him to Soccer Aid 2026.
The intermezzo — new releases
Before attacking our main topic, the summer watch, we discuss a bevy of new pieces that could qualify as timepieces of the season. First, there's the Tudor Black Bay Chrono 39 "Bumble Bee," which heralds a new case size from the popular brand. Both of us like it and are excited to see which colors may come next. The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Fifty is a beautiful, albeit luxurious, release that nails its brief as a true contender to other pieces in its competitive set. For Mike, this watch enters the horse race against his longtime crush, the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF 36. Balazs mentions the surprising new Timex Atelier collection. It consists of four modern watches, some of which…

Fratello Talks: Could A Desire For Disconnection Spell A Bright Future For Mechanical Watches?
4 juni 2026 · 26 min
For years, the assumption was that the world would only become more digital — more connected, more automated, more dependent on screens. And yet, in recent years, there seems to have been a subtle shift in the opposite direction. Vinyl records are thriving, physical books remain popular, wired headphones and MP3 players are back, and younger generations increasingly talk about wanting more intentional, less connected experiences. So, where do mechanical watches fit into all of this? In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Thomas to discuss whether this broader craving for the analog could point toward a healthy future for mechanical watches. The conversation touches on digital fatigue, analog objects, and why these slightly more impractical things can sometimes feel more meaningful than ever. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: Catching Up, Accutrons, And Family Additions
2 juni 2026 · 1 uur 14 min
Welcome to a long-awaited episode of Fratello On Air! Well, at least we're excited to be back. It's been a while, meaning we'll cover some recent news from the watch industry, sneaker landscape, television, and even our personal lives. We look forward to catching up with you! Lees meer
It's been nearly two months since we last published an episode of Fratello On Air. Yes, that's too long, but life has gotten in the way. It's mainly Mike who has had a crazy travel schedule, with just 36 hours spent in the UK in April. Balazs has been at the ready, but just seven weeks ago, he became a father as his daughter was born (on RJ's birthday, no less!). But here we are, with a full hour to catch up and a plan to visit the airwaves regularly.Handgelenkskontrolle
We actually end our show with the Handgelenkskontrolle, but tradition requires it to open our written recap. At the beginning of the show, we cover a multitude of topics. Of course, we mention travel with Mike doing the lion's share of flying. Multiple trips to the United States, a stop in Switzerland for Watches and Wonders 2026, Germany, and Italy have made the flight plan over the last two months. But don't worry, we've been watching television during flights or sleepless newborn nights. From, Euphoria, Succession, and IT: Welcome to Derry are some of the shows we've been viewing. Regarding shoes, Balazs mentioned the Nike Tennis Classic PRM, a sneaker with surfaces inspired by watch straps. Meanwhile, Mike has purchased a lively pair of New Balance 992s for the summer. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his modern, dark blue 42mm Breitling SuperOcean. Balazs is wearing the watch he had on during his daughter's birth, his beloved Rolex GMT-Master 1675.
Catching up on the news
Of course, we discuss the Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop. While he's not in love with the watch, he feels that it's one of the most significant happenings in watch history. That's a bold take! We also spend time talking about the new…

Fratello Talks: Fratello Talks: The Watches We'd Buy If We Started Collecting Today

Every watch collector has wondered about this at some point. If you could go back to the beginning, armed with everything you know now, what would you do differently? Would you buy fewer watches, take bigger risks, or even skip certain phases altogether? In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by RJ and Timo to tackle exactly that question. Looking at today's watch landscape rather than the one they entered years ago, the three discuss the watches they would buy if they were starting their collecting journeys from scratch. Along the way, they touch on changing tastes, lessons learned, and how the market itself has evolved. Lees meer

Fratello Talks: Vintage Watches — Wear It Or Spare It?

Most of us here at Fratello love vintage watches, but not all of us are comfortable buying and wearing them. Do you wear it, or do you spare it? Damaging a vintage watch can be expensive, but it might also just feel wrong to wear it daily. Can it withstand today's abuse? Is it still water resistant enough? How about shocks? In this week's installment of Fratello Talks, RJ, Max, and Daan discuss whether they wear or spare their (neo-)vintage watches. Lees meer

Fratello Talks: There Are No Tool Watches Above €500
14 mei 2026 · 27 min
Mechanical watches were once essential tools for pilots, divers, scientists, race car drivers, etc. You’ve probably seen the advertisements in old National Geographic magazines, showing spelunkers proudly wearing their Rolex Explorers or a pilot checking his Breitling Navitimer, using it to calculate fuel consumption. For many years (decades) now, this has been handled digitally, as that’s quicker and perhaps more reliable and precise. Yet, we still call certain timepieces “tool watches.” Prime examples are diving and aviation watches that often cost more than an average monthly salary (or two). Lees meer

Fratello Talks: The Great Watch Price-Shift Dilemma
12 mei 2026 · 38 min
Watch prices have been creeping upward for years, but recently, it feels like something more fundamental is happening. It’s no longer just about incremental increases, as entire segments seem to be shifting. Brands are moving into price territory once occupied by others, microbrands are pushing higher than ever before, and the old mental map of “what you get for your money” is becoming harder to navigate. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Thomas to unpack this growing dilemma. What’s driving these shifts? Are they justified? And perhaps most importantly, how does this affect the way we perceive value as collectors? Lees meer

Fratello Talks: A Big Year For Skeletonized And Openworked Watches

Skeletonized watches and openworked dials seem to be everywhere this year. From subtle cutouts that reveal just a hint of mechanics to fully open displays that showcase the entire movement, brands across price segments are leaning into transparency. Whether driven by aesthetics, technical ambition, or simply a desire to stand out, it’s a trend that’s hard to ignore. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Thomas and Lex to discuss what feels like a particularly strong year so far for skeletonization and openworked designs. The trio explores why brands keep returning to this idea, what separates a good execution from a cluttered one, and whether these watches work as daily wearers or remain statement pieces. Lees meer

Fratello Talks: How Much Does Chronometer Certification Matter?

"Chronometer" is one term that frequently comes up in watchmaking. We see it stamped on dials, highlighted in marketing materials, and often used as a synonym for "high quality." But how much does chronometer certification actually matter to us as collectors? In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and RJ to unpack the role of this certification in modern watch collecting. Is it something we actively look for? Does it influence buying decisions? Or is it one of those things that sounds more important than it feels in daily wear? Lees meer

Fratello Talks: Watches We Personally Love But Would Not Recommend

We all have watches we absolutely love but would hesitate to recommend to someone else. That might sound contradictory at first, but spend enough time in this hobby, and it starts to make sense. Not every great watch is universally great. Some require a certain mindset, a specific wrist, or simply a willingness to embrace their quirks. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho, Daan, and RJ discuss precisely those watches — the ones they enjoy for themselves but wouldn’t necessarily suggest as a safe buy for others. It’s a conversation about nuance, experience, and the difference between appreciation and recommendation. Lees meer

Fratello On Air: Vintage Brands Worth Checking Out
31 maart 2026 · 1 uur 16 min
Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we discuss underrated vintage brands that are worth a long look. We've had these types of chats before, but it's always nice to see what we've missed. You'll hear some familiar names today, as well as about some smaller companies that could be new to you. Lees meer
While both of us have a penchant for vintage Rolex, Heuer, and other well-known marques, our love for vintage brands is universal. Whether it's a cool piece from a one-hit wonder or an everyman's watch company that made some seriously good stuff, we're up for it. Today, we'll mention some oft-overlooked opportunities to grab some of that vintage goodness.
Handgelenkskontrolle
We begin our show with a discussion about Mike's home state, Florida. Then, we move on to television, where Balazs has been watching Tehran, Hijack, and His & Hers. Meanwhile, Mike has engaged his '90s youth with Love Story. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is wearing his trusty vintage Rolex 5513 Submariner after his latest journey. Mike has been exploring modern watches lately due to the never-ending rain in the UK. This week, he's wearing his Aquastar Benthos H2.
Vintage brands worth looking into
There are fantastic opportunities within the watch hobby to enjoy great pieces at an affordable price. Sure, a vintage Rolex or Patek Philippe is a wonderful thing to own. However, with high prices, scary fakes, and the risk of loss as ever-present concerns, it's worthwhile to look elsewhere. Today, we're focused on vintage brands that don't get much attention but still offer loads of value and satisfaction.
We start our discussion with Bulova, a once-mighty Swiss-American brand that's thriving again under Citizen's ownership. Still, aside from a few pricey key chronographs and dive watches from the 60s, this high-volume brand has some gems that are very easy to find and affordable. With in-house movements and enough styles to fill a museum, there's likely something for every…
