Interviews With "Strange Darling" Star Willa Fitzgerald, Director/Writer JT Mollner & Cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi
23 augustus 2024 · 18 min
"Strange Darling" had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2023 in Austin, Texas, where it received enthusiastic reviews for its non-linear narrative, performances from Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner, and actor-turned-cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi's gorgeous 35mm photography. Director/Writer JT Mollner, Ribisi, and Fitzgerald were all kind enough to spend some time with me talking about their experiences making the film and its themes while carefully avoiding spoilers (this is the kind of movie you want to go in as blindly as possible). Don't miss the chance to see this unique thriller from Magenta Light Studios in theaters now. Thank you, and enjoy! Lees meer

Our 2010 retrospective has come to an end. We say goodbye with that year's Oscar Best Picture winner, "The King's Speech," starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Guy Pearce & Timothy Spall. Directed by Tom Hooper and brilliantly written by David Seidler, the inspiring true story is among the hotly debated Best Picture winners of all time. While the merits of its Oscar wins are certainly discussed, we primarily want to know how the film holds up on its own fourteen years later. Join Lauren LaMagna, Josh Parham, Alyssa Christian, Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss our thoughts on the performances, writing, direction, cinematography, its awards season success, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. It's been a fun retrospective, and we hope you'll go back and listen to our reviews for "Black Swan," "The Town," "The Fighter," "Toy Story 3," "Winter's Bone," "127 Hours," "Blue Valentine," "The Kids Are All Right," "Inception" and former reviews for "The Social Network," and "True Grit." Please be sure to take a look at the winners of the NBP Film Community and NBP Film Awards for 2010. I would like to give a final thank you to all of you, the dear listeners of Next Best Picture. We appreciate your support and hope you have had as great of a time with this retrospective as we have. Enjoy!

Director Weronika Tofilska, who also directed Episodes 1-3, was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her Emmy-nominated episode and experience making the show, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the show, which is available to stream in full on Netflix and is up for your consideration in all eligible categories for this year's Emmy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy! Known for his proclivity towards suspenseful filmmaking and brutal gore, director Fede Álvarez accentuates the franchise's genre elements while providing a ton of winks and nods to previous entries, but how did we all feel about these choices? Tune in as we discuss the callbacks, action, horror, performances, writing, the hotly debated resurrection of a character, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Interview With "Young Woman And The Sea" Composer Amelia Warner

Scoring some of the highest test scores in the studio's history, the inspirational true story of Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle is backed by a rousing, gorgeous score by English composer Amelia Warner. A few days after watching the film in theaters and being so captivated by the score, I tracked down Warner to speak with her about what I consider to be one of the year's best film scores. She was very gracious with her time, diving into her inspirations, working with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, her opinions on the current landscape of film scoring, and more. Interview With “Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger” Director David Hinton & Executive Producer Thelma Schoonmaker
15 juli 2024 · 22 min
“Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger” had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, where it received rave reviews for delving into the films and careers of two of the greatest storytellers the medium as ever known: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. From “Black Narcissus” to “The Red Shoes,” to “A Matter of Life and Death,” to “The Tales of Hoffmann,” their collaboration inspired a generation and is still revered for their daring artistry to this day. Director David Hinton and Executive Producer Thelma Schoonmaker (and Powell’s widow wife) were both kind enough to spend a few minutes answering questions about the documentary, which is now playing at Quad Cinema in New York City and will open in Los Angeles at the Landmark’s Nuart Theater on July 26th with a national rollout to occur afterward. "Longlegs"
13 juli 2024 · 1 uur 40 min
For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic, Brendan Hodges & Will Mavity, and I are reviewing the latest film from director Osgood Perkins, "Longlegs," starring Maika Monroe, Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt, Nicolas Cage, Michelle Choi-Lee & Dakota Daulby. In what has been billed as one of the scariest films ever made and with many comparisons to "Se7en" and "The Silence Of The Lambs," NEON's new movie is part serial killer, part police procedural and part horror film, all coming together to create what is sure to be their most successful film to date. Is it as scary as many have said? What did we think of the performances, the filmmaking, and the marketing strategy? Tune in as we discuss these elements and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Lees meer
