Interview With "Beau Is Afraid" Stars Amy Ryan & Nathan Lane
21 april 2023 · 10 min
"Beau Is Afraid" is the latest film from auteur director Ari Aster and it's proving to be his most divisive but fascinating feature yet. The nightmarish horror comedy is a three-hour-long epic odyssey that takes Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) to the ends of the earth on a journey to visit his mother, with whom he has a complex relationship. After hitting him with their car, he awakens to meet the kindly couple, Grace (Amy Ryan) and Roger (Nathan Lane), who may not be who they say they are to Beau. Amy and Nathan were kind enough to spend some time talking with me about their work on the film, collaborating with Aster and more. Please check it out below, enjoy and be sure to check out the film, which is currently playing in theaters from A24! Thank you. Lees meer

Interview With "Renfield" Star Ben Schwartz & Director Chris McKay
14 april 2023 · 13 min
"Renfield" is a horror, action comedy from director Chris McKay ("The Lego Batman Movie" and "The Tomorrow War") which tells the story of a co-dependent relationship between Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and his long-suffering familiar Renfield (Nicholas Hoult). An intentionally silly, fun, and over-the-top comedy with lots of gore, actor Ben Schwartz plays the son of a mob boss who gets tied up in Renfield and Dracula's conflict. Schwartz and McKay were kind enough to let me interview them during the press junket for the film (my first-ever in-person interview), which you can listen to below! Thank you, and enjoy! Lees meer

Interview With "John Wick: Chapter 4" Editor Nathan Orloff
27 maart 2023 · 21 min
"John Wick: Chapter 4" has received the best reviews, audience reactions, and box office of the "John Wick" franchise. It makes it all the more impressive when you consider the latest film is nearly three hours long and could've gone wrong in so many ways in its final edit. Nathan Orloff ("Ghostbusters: Afterlife"), an openly gay film editor, brought a unique perspective to the "John Wick" franchise, which is known for its hyper-masculine themes and characters. His ability to connect with the material and understand the nuances of the action sequences made him an essential collaborator with director Chad Stahelski. He has contributed significantly to the film's success due to the handling of the pacing for such an epic action film, and he was kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with me about his work on the film. Please check my interview with him below and enjoy! Thank you! Lees meer

Before the Oscar-winning "Everything Everywhere All At Once," Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's feature directorial debut "Swiss Army Man" polarized audiences during its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The directing duo would go on to win the Best Director prize from the festival, and the film would play in art house theaters, flying under the radar until their successful follow-up film last year. Interview With "Creed III" Cinematographer, Kramer Morgenthau
12 maart 2023 · 19 min
"Creed III" recently opened in theaters to the franchise's best box office opening and is continuing the "Creed" franchise in new and unexpected ways. One of those fresh approaches was through the film's cinematography. Michael B. Jordan, in his directorial debut, brought on "Creed II" director of photography Kramer Morgenthau to execute his vision for the third and most ambitious film in the franchise yet. That ambition came from the decision to shoot the boxing scenes using IMAX cameras, a first for any sports film, and depict the action in a style that resembled anime. "Aftersun" had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The directorial debut of Charlotte Wells flew under the radar until many eventually saw it, declaring it the best film of the festival. With A24 distributing and "Moonlight's" Barry Jenkins and Adele Romanski producing, the tiny independent film took awards season by storm, winning nearly every breakthrough/first-time director prize and more. With "Normal People" star Paul Mescal receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, we decided days before the ceremony to go back and review this film which we missed during its initial theatrical release. Lauren LaMagna & Giovanni Lago joined me to discuss the film's themes, filmmaking, the chemistry between Mescal and Frankie Corio, how we personally connected with it, and more. Our Immediate Reactions To The 2023 Spirit Awards With The NBP Film Community
5 maart 2023 · 12 min
The 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards were held last night, representing the best in independent film for 2022. After the show, I hopped on a Zoom call with Jonathan Fuji, aka. "The Film Drunk," Zoe Rose Bryant (who joins later) and, as per tradition, the NBP Film Community right after the show to talk about the winners and our thoughts on what any of this means for the Oscar race while voting is still going on. Since Film Independent is an organization anyone can join, it makes sense to celebrate this evening with the community, some of whom are voters themselves! Tune in below to listen and enjoy! Thank you! Lees meer

"Creed III"
4 maart 2023 · 1 uur 9 min
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham and guests Kolby Mac and Duane Miller. This week we're reviewing the directorial debut from Michael B. Jordan and the latest film in the "Creed" franchise, "Creed III" starring Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris, Florian Munteanu & Phylicia Rashad. What did we think of Michael B. Jordan's directing, his decisions to shoot the boxing scenes with IMAX cameras, where this leaves the Adonis Creed character, the absence of Rocky, and of course, the almighty Jonathan Majors? We discuss all of these points and more in our review, which you can listen to down below. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you! Lees meer

The Netflix WWI film recently won 7 BAFTA awards, including Best Film, and has been a critical success since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Interviews With "Babylon" Oscar-Nominated Composer Justin Hurwitz & Costume Designer Mary Zophres
3 maart 2023 · 1 uur 23 min
Damien Chazelle's "Babylon" was one of 2022's largest and most ambitious films. It's fair to say it split everyone who saw it down the middle with their opinions. But an area most could agree on was the film's technical craft. Two frequent Chazelle collaborators, composer Justin Hurwitz and costume designer Mary Zophres were kind enough to spend some time going in-depth on their work for Chazelle's latest. First up is my interview with Hurwitz, where he breaks down the extensive layering of the score, how the film pushed him out of his comfort zone to try new things, if he's open to working with anyone outside Damien Chazelle, and more. Then we have Zoe Rose Bryant's interview with Mary Zophres, where she breaks down the film's elaborate costumes, working with all the different department heads on this massive project, her reaction to some of the criticisms thrown at the film's anachronisms, and more. You do not want to miss listening to these before the Oscars! Please take a listen to them down below and enjoy. Thank you! Lees meer
