"Zero Dark Thirty"
14 april 2022 · 19 min
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Lees meer
As promised at the conclusion of the 2021 awards season, we have our first of ten NBP Podcast reviews for our 2012 retrospective, which will be running from now until the end of the summer. That first film is Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to her Oscar-winning film "The Hurt Locker," titled "Zero Dark Thirty," which saw her re-team with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Mark Boal. With a large ensemble cast led by Jessica Chastain, Bigelow's film ignited a ton of controversy upon its release, making for one of the most spectacular rises and falls in awards season history. What do we think of the film ten years later? We discuss the direction, writing, editing, Chastain's performance, and more in our review. Joining me for this podcast retrospective review, I have Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, and guests Nadia Dalimonte and Charles Bright. We hope you enjoy our first of many discussions on the film year that was 2012. Thank you!

Interview With "Paris, 13th District" Director, Jacques Audiard & Star, Lucie Zhang
13 april 2022 · 14 min
The 27th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema wrapped up in New York a few weeks ago, and as always, the Film at Lincoln Center did a fantastic job with their programming, talks, and events. The acclaimed festival highlights the best of what contemporary French filmmaking has to offer, with many great artists from across the sea attending in-person, including Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin, Mathieu Almaric, Emmanuel Carrère, Emilie Carpentier, Vincent Maël Cardona, and Leyla Bouzid. One of the great auteur filmmakers of our time is Jacques Audiard, who brought his film "Prais, 13th District" to the festival after its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The film is a fascinating exploration of casual sex and relationships set in modern-day Paris, seen through the eyes of complex adults starring Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, Jehnny Beth & Noémie Merlant. Audiard and Zhang were kind enough to talk with me about the film, their work together, and what they plan to do next. Please take a listen to my conversation with them below and be sure to check out the film which is opening in limited release this week from IFC Films. Thank you. Lees meer

Interviews With "Everything Everywhere All At Once" Editor, Paul Rogers & Sound Supervisor, Brent Kiser
6 april 2022 · 51 min
We know that there will be plenty of interviews with writers/directors Daniels, leading star Michelle Yeoh, and the rest of the cast for A24's latest release, "Everything Everywhere All At Once." However, for a film this packed with a deep love for the cinematic art form, we decided to chat with the artisans who worked behind the scenes to make the film the standout critical hit it has become. First up, we have my interview with film editor Paul Rogers who previously collaborated with Daniel Scheinert on "The Death Of Dick Long." Then we have Will Mavity's interview with the sound editor and re-recording mixer, Brent Kiser. Together, the two reveal the secrets, challenges, and rewards of making what is already being healed as one of the best films of 2022. Be sure to check out the film when it releases wide this weekend, and please take a listen to our interviews below. Thank you, and enjoy! Lees meer

"Morbius"
2 april 2022 · 56 min
For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Ema Sasic & guest Tessa Smith. Today, we're discussing the long-delayed and morbidly anticipated "Morbius," starring Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal & Tyrese Gibson. A new entry into Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) alongside the "Spider-Man" and "Venom" films, the movie was delayed multiple times by Sony due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rumors that they were not confident in the film's success. Was that fear warranted? Does the movie meet, exceed or miss our expectations? What did we think of the acting, visual effects, action, and story? Justin Kurzel has become one of Australia's leading filmmakers delivering memorable films such as "Macbeth" and "The True History Of The Kelly Gang." His latest film, "Nitram," captures a dark moment in modern Australian history pertaining to gun violence and mental health. The film had its world premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since gone on to win the Best Actor prize for its star Caleb Landry Jones and eight AACTA awards, including Best Film & Best Director. Justin was kind enough to take a few minutes to discuss what drew him to the project, working with Landry Jones, what he hopes audiences will take away from the film, and more. "The Piano"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Lees meer
Academy Award-winner Jane Campion is set to have a big weekend as her latest film, "The Power Of The Dog," is heading into Oscar Sunday with a leading twelve nominations, and many are expecting the New Zealand-born director to win her first Oscar for Best Director. However, back in 1993, she made a huge splash with her beautifully haunting film "The Piano," starring Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill & Anna Paquin. Becoming the first woman ever to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the film would also earn two additional Academy Awards for Best Actress (Holly Hunter) and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin, who was only eleven at the time). What did we think of the film, revisiting it all of these years later? What did we think of the themes, characters, music, cinematography, and its awards season run? Nicole Ackman, Casey Lee Clark & Danilo Castro join me to discuss all of these points and more in our review down below. Please check out the Criterion Collection's recent gorgeous 4K UHD restoration of the film; listen down below and enjoy!

Last night, the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards were held last night representing the best in independent film for 2021. After the show, I decided to hop on a Zoom call with the NBP Film Community (just as we did last year) right after the show to talk about the winners and what our thoughts are about what any of this means for the Oscar race. Since Film Independent is an organization that anyone can join, it makes sense to celebrate this evening with the community, some of whom are voters themselves! Tune in below to listen and enjoy!

"The Batman"
5 maart 2022 · 2 uur 1 min
For our main podcast review this week, Eve O'Dea, Josh Parham, Daniel Howat, Cody Dericks & guest Johnny Sobczak all join me to discuss one of the most anticipated films of 2022: "The Batman" starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis & Colin Farrell. Directed by Matt Reeves, this epic 176-minute long neo-noir plunges audiences into the dark world of Gotham City, only two years into Bruce Wayne's tenure as the crime-fighting vigilante known as Batman. It's a grounded and seriously dark take on the character, one that is separated from the rest of the DCEU and really focuses on his skills as a detective. What did we think of Reeves' vision for the character, the film's crafts, the performances by the cast, and its awards potential? We discuss all of these points and more in our review down below. Enjoy! Lees meer

Interview With "Against The Ice" Star & Co-Writer, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
3 maart 2022 · 15 min
"Against The Ice" is a survival film based on a true story with deep ties to Danish history. Emmy-nominated "Game Of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau co-wrote the screenplay about Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen's (who he also plays in the film) expedition in Greenland, which left him and his volunteer mate Iver Iversen (played by Joe Cole) stranded for over two years in an unforgivingly cold and harsh environment. Nikolaj was kind enough to spend time talking with me about coming across the story, working with Cole, what were the toughest and best parts of shooting, and more! Episode 283 - Academy Decisions, Spirit Award Predictions & "The Bad Guys" Trailer
27 februari 2022 · 1 uur 58 min
For Episode 283, we weren't expecting to have a show this week. With the SAG Awards tonight, we already gave our predictions on last week's show and will have instant reactions for you all tomorrow. However, on Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences made a shocking announcement regarding their telecast this year, and thus, a show was needed. Then, the world proceeded to change around us, but we're still here to hopefully bring a little light into your lives as we know how much this show can serve as a comforting distraction from the horrors of real life. Josh Parham, Will Mavity, and guest Charlie Bright from Gold Derby join me to discuss the Academy's changes regarding eight Oscar categories being pre-taped before the live telecast, our own suggestions on how to fix the ratings problem ABC has been experiencing, and what these changes will mean for the future. We also deliver our predictions for next week's Independent Spirit Awards, go over the polls, give our reactions to the trailer for "The Bad Guys," answer your fan-submitted questions, and more. This is your last week to vote on the 2021 NBP Film Community Award winners, so please take a moment to vote here if you have not done so already. Thank you all so very much for your support. Enjoy! For our main podcast review this week, Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer joined me to discuss "Moonfall," starring Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu & Donald Sutherland. Since their first time working together on "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009), the in-demand composer has worked with Anderson on each of his movies since receiving two Oscar nominations in the process and one win for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014). "The French Dispatch" is their fifth collaboration together and sees Desplat in the hunt once again for another nomination on a Wes Anderson film after previously receiving a nomination this year from the Golden Globes and now being shortlisted at both the BAFTAs and Academy Awards. Desplat was kind enough to return to the podcast (he previously spoke with us about his second Oscar-winning work on "The Shape of Water") and discuss his work on Anderson's latest, which you can listen to down below. We hope you enjoy the conversation! Lees meer

28 januari 2022 · 18 min
In a year filled with Marvel films, one of the most successful and beloved was Destin Daniel Cretton's "Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings." The film introduced audiences to Xu Shang-Chi (played by Simu Liu), the first Asian superhero, his relationships with his best friend Katy (played by Awkwafina), his father Xu Wenwu (played by Tony Leung in his first Hollywood film), and a whole new mythology in the MCU. The film was painstakingly brought to life by its visual effects team, who are shortlisted this year for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. We were lucky enough to get a chance to speak with VFX Supervisor Christopher Townsend, Additional VFX Supervisor Joe Farrell, WETA Digital VFX Supervisor Sean Walker, and SFX Supervisor Dan Oliver, who all went into detail about their various roles and contributions to the film. We hope you enjoy our conversation down below. Lees meer

"The Eyes Of Tammy Faye" had its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where it quickly garnered awards season buzz for Jessica Chastain's transformational performance as the titular character. Part of what makes that transformation work, as well as it does, is the makeup and hair work being done on Chastain and Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker. Makeup department head Linda Dowds and hair department head Stephanie Ingram were kind enough to talk with us about their work on both actors, which you can listen to down below! Enjoy! Lees meer

It's been over twenty years since the original "Matrix" won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 1999 Academy Awards. Interview With "King Richard" Editor, Pamela Martin
25 januari 2022 · 27 min
"King Richard" had its world premiere at last year's Telluride Film Festival, where it immediately struck up awards buzz for Will Smith's lead performance, the Beyoncé closing credits song "Be Alive," and other elements such as writing and editing, to help establish it as a contender in the Oscar race for Best Picture. Pamela Martin's editing has helped the film's success by keeping the 145-minute runtime moving and engaging, whether an audience member saw it in a theater or at home on HBO Max. She was kind enough to talk with us about her work, including the tennis matches, the closing montage which weaves in real-life footage of the Williams Sisters and their father, and more! Interviews With "The Harder They Fall," Director, Writer & Composer, Jeymes Samuel & Costume Designer, Antoinette Messam
20 januari 2022 · 41 min
"The Harder They Fall" is a Black revisionist Western which has lit the world on fire and put Hollywood on notice with its all talented Black cast, genre-defying elements, and hip-hop-influenced soundtrack. Writer, director, and composer Jeymes Samuel was kind enough to chat with me about his inspiration for the project, how he chose to approach it compared to his music endeavors, and how his film is looking to reclaim the genre from Hollywood's long history of not giving Black voices their due. On top of that, Costume Designer Antoinette Messam spoke with Will Mavity about her work on the film, which seemed to blend the historic and the modern to present something vibrant and fresh for today's audience. We hope you enjoy it! Lees meer
