For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic & Dan Bayer. Together, we're reviewing the latest film from Disney Pixar, "Lightyear," Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin & Taika Waititi. Based on the movie the character Andy saw in 1995, which inspired him to want a Buzz Lightyear action figure (we know, we know), the film is Pixar's first foray into the world of science-fiction as Buzz goes on an adventure that will take him to infinity and beyond. What did we think of the story, the characters, the humor, and the action? Find out in our review down below. Please take a listen and enjoy! Thank you! Lees meer

"Good Luck To You, Leo Grande" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and was later picked up by Searchlight Pictures, who released it this weekend on Hulu. The film stars Emma Thompson in one of her best roles to date as Nancy, a middle-aged retired woman looking for good sex at this point in her life, and Daryl McCormack in a breakout turn as her hired young sex-worker, Leo Grande. Both of them deliver terrific performances and are aided by the thoughtful writing from screenwriter Katy Brand. The sex-positive story carefully outlines both characters with a high level of detail, providing an insightful analysis of sex and the relationship the two share with one another. Katy was kind enough to talk with us about her screenplay, the characters, the hotel setting they share, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, now streaming on Hulu, and have a listen down below and enjoy. Thank you! Lees meer

Our 2012 retrospective continues with director Tom Hooper's follow-up to his Oscar Best Picture-winning film "The King Speech" with "Les Misérables" starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit, and Daniel Huttlestone. A major Oscar contender on paper due to the musical's pedigree in the world of Broadway, the film achieved financial success at the box office while critical reception was more mixed. What do we think of it ten years later? How do we feel about the performances (singing ad acting), the cinematography, production design, the adaptation from stage to film, and its awards season run? Tune in below as the Next Best Theatre team, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Lauren LaMagna, Cody Dericks, and I discuss all of these topics and more in our review below. You can also check out all of our previous 2012 retrospective reviews for "Zero Dark Thirty," "Skyfall," "Amour" & "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" if you have not done so already. Thank you. 21. Interview With "Men" Star, Rory Kinnear

Alex Garland's psychological horror film, "Men," has been polarizing audiences since its release this past weekend from A24. However, the one thing most people seem to agree on in the movie is the performance, or rather, "performances," from actor Rory Kinnear as the numerous men in the film who terrorize Jessie Buckley's character. Rory was kind enough to spend some time talking about what it was like to tackle such a unique project, his acting process, whether he would return to the James Bond franchise if asked, and more. For our second review this week, Josh Parham, Ema Sasic, Eve O'Dea & Zoe Rose Bryant joined me to discuss the newest film from Alex Garland, "Men," starring Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu & Gayle Rankin. The A24 horror film has garnered a polarizing reception landing a D+ Cinemascore and dividing audiences on where it fits within Garland's filmography alongside his other two films, "Ex Machina" and "Annihilation." What did we think of it, though? We do our best to avoid spoilers in this one as we rummage through our many thoughts on the direction, screenplay, performances, and more. Following the success of the 2019 film "Downton Abbey," the cast returned for a sequel, penned once again by series creator Julian Fellowes, titled "Downton Abbey: A New Era," which was just released in theaters this weekend. It's a welcome return to a cast of characters we know and love so well by this point that any time we spend with them is truly a gift. Actors Laura Carmichael and Allen Leech see it that way as well, as they reprise their roles as Lady Edith and Tom Branson. Along with Fellowes, the two of them were kind enough to spend some time talking with us about returning to their characters, discussing what they're going through in this film and what lies ahead. "On The Count Of Three" had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where a lot of people were wondering who would be daring enough to pick up the film, which dealt with a highly sensitive subject matter, blending dark comedy with the heartwarming drama between two best friends who make a pact to kill themselves on the same day. Screenwriters Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch had a difficult tight rope to walk when communicating the themes of their story and the humanity of their characters without rubbing audiences the wrong way. An uncompromising look at the porn industry with many graphic sex scenes, it is a testament to writer and director Ninja Thyberg that the movie works as well as it does. With no judgment being placed on its protagonist (played brilliantly and fearlessly by Sofia Kappel), the film is a psychological character study that showcases both the good and ugly side of a business many have pre-conceived ill notions of. Our 2012 retrospective continues with one of the biggest films from that year. Sam Mendes' "Skyfall" was a game-changer for the James Bond franchise critically, financially, and awards-wise. Heralded for its cinematography, focus on character, score, and iconic James Bond theme by multi-award-winning artist Adele, the film is often regarded as one of the finest James Bond films and one of the finest films of 2012. What do we think of it ten years later? Do the action scenes hold up for us? What about the story? How do we feel about the performances by Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, and Judi Dench? We discuss all of this plus the film's awards season run and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review down below. Joining me for this podcast retrospective review I have Sara Clements, Josh Parham, Zoe Rose Bryant & Patreon guest Ben Sears. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you!

"Navalny" had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and the overall Festival Favorite Award. One couldn't have guessed how a month later, the film would prove to be more timely than ever when Russia waged war on Ukraine. The documentary tells the story of the rise of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny and the plot to assassinate him by the Kremlin. Though Navalny is currently behind bars, the documentary has resonated with all those who have seen it. Director Daniel Roher was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the impact his film is having on audiences, if he fears for his own safety after making the documentary, what went into capturing that shocking phone call between Navalny and his assassins. We discuss all of this and more in our podcast, which you can listen to down below. The film had its premiere this past Sunday on CNN & will be available on HBO Max starting May 26th. Enjoy!
