"Titane"
2 oktober 2021 · 1 uur 14 min
For our main podcast review this weekend, Eve O'Dea, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Tom O'Brien join me to discuss the 2021 Palme d'Or winner from the Cannes Film Festival, Julia Ducournau's fearless "Titane" starring Agathe Rousselle & Vincent Lindon. Following her directorial debut, "Raw," Julia continues to push boundaries and shock audiences with her gifted storytelling. Audacious, hilarious, and unexpectedly moving, her latest defies convention and is best seen with as little knowledge about it heading in as possible. Be warned, our review is filled with spoilers, so if you're thinking of taking a listen before seeing the film, don't! Go see it first, come back and enjoy! Lees meer

Interview With "Old Henry" Director/Writer Potsy Ponciroli & Star, Tim Blake Nelson
1 oktober 2021 · 17 min
"Old Henry" is a lean, harsh, and violent western which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is now being released theatrically by Shout! Studios. The film marks writer/director Potsy Ponciroli's first time exploring the western genre and his first time writing a dramatic feature outside of the broad comedies he's usually worked on. Having been no stranger to independent movies or westerns, character actor Tim Blake Nelson ("The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs") is remarkable as the titular character in Ponciroli's film. Both were kind enough to take some time to talk with me about making the film, working with each other, and more! Click below to listen, and be sure to check out the film now playing in theaters. "The Guilty"
28 september 2021 · 34 min
For our second podcast review this week, Dan Bayer, Sara Clements, Will Mavity & Zoe Rose Bryant joins me to discuss the American remake of the 2018 Danish film "The Guilty," also titled "The Guilty" starring Jake Gyllenhaal. With a script by "True Detective" writer Nic Pizzolatto and Jake re-teaming with "Southpaw" director Antoine Fuqua, the collaboration gives us a taut thriller, confined to a single location for the entire runtime. How did we feel it compared to the original? What did we think of Jake's performance? Tune in below to hear our thoughts, enjoy and be sure to check out the film streaming on Netflix this weekend. Interview With "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye" Actress, Cherry Jones
27 september 2021 · 13 min
Cherry Jones is one of the most distinguished actresses working today. A Tony and Emmy Award winner, she's graced the screen, stage, and our television sets with brilliant performances over her entire career. Her latest role is in "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye," where she plays Tammy's mother, Rachel. A religiously devoted woman, she has to deal with backlash within her community due to being divorced, making for a complex character to portray on screen and one with whom Cherry can relate in more ways than one. Cherry was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her role, her thoughts on the real-life Tammy Faye and her husband Jim Bakker, working with Jessica Chastain, and more! Now, nearly 30 years later, Schrader reached out to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club musician for the music on his latest film, "The Card Counter." Initially, Robert was supposed to deliver one song. This week, Ema Sasic, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat join me for our main podcast review of Nia DaCosta's "Candyman," starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett & Colman Domingo. A sequel and soft-reboot to the 1992 original horror film the film has been delayed numerous times of the past year but is finally here for us to dissect. What did we think of the film's themes, performances, and technical elements? Were any of these impacted by the film's 91 minute running time? Interview With "The Lost Leonardo" Sound Designer, Peter Albrechtsen
27 augustus 2021 · 29 min
Sound Designer Peter Albrechtsen is becoming one of our most frequent and favorite guests to have on the Next Best Picture Podcast, and it's easy to see why. Even with a film such as "The Lost Leonardo," a documentary about the discovery of a lost painting supposedly by Leonardo da Vinci, he's still a wealth of knowledge and insight into the creative filmmaking process for movies that don't have the most obvious use of sound work. Listening to him is a real pleasure, and you should check out our previous chats with him if you haven't already as well as the latest down below. Enjoy! Lees meer

Our 2013 retrospective has come to an end. To finish things off, we're discussing the Best Picture winner of 2013, one of the most powerful films ever made, "12 Years A Slave," starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Lupita Nyong'o. Acclaimed upon its release and herald as a masterpiece since then, Steve McQueen's searing account of the unbelievably true story of Solomon Northup is a brutally demanding but rewarding film to sit through as we're transported back to the darkest time in American history. How does it hold up for us eight years later? Tune in below to find out. Joining me for this review, I have Josh Parham, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Casey Lee Clark & Will Mavity. You can also check out all of our previous 2013 retrospective reviews for "Captain Phillips," "Philomena," "The Wolf Of Wall Street," "The Great Gatsby," "Her," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Frozen," "Gravity," "Nebraska" & "American Hustle" if you have not done so already.

For our second podcast review this week, Amanda Spears, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Casey Lee Clark & Will Mavity join me to discuss the highly original, divisive, wild, and bombastic operatic musical from the brilliant mind of Leos Carax, "Annette." Interviews With "CODA" Director/Writer, Sian Heder & Actor, Troy Kotsur
24 augustus 2021 · 35 min
If there's any hope that writer-director Sian Heder has for her Sundance-winning film "CODA," it's for her actors to get the recognition they deserve. It's a fair hope that her actors, including deaf performers Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant, would receive accolades that so rarely come to performances like these. The Oscar-winning Matlin is one of the rare exceptions, though Heder notes Matlin still hasn't had the career she deserves. "CODA" centers on Ruby, a hearing child of deaf adults, played by newcomer Emilia Jones. Roughly 40% of the film is comprised of ASL, something that brought unique challenges for Heder. In a conversation with Next Best Picture, Heder discusses the missed opportunities she sees when creators avoid casting actors with a disability and why she wants the world to see Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant as major stars. Lees meer
Speaking of Troy Kotsur, watching "Children of a Lesser God" as a 17-year-old, he promised his friends that he would work with Marlee Matlin one day. Thirty-five years later, he's made good on that promise in "CODA." Kotsur still recalls the impact of seeing Sign Language on screen all those years ago. Though films like "Sound of Metal" and "Feeling Through" were nominated for Academy Awards just last year, it's still a rarity to see deaf representation at the movies, which is why Kotsur is honored to star in a film that could inspire a new generation of young people. In a conversation with Next Best Picture, Kotsur discussed how the story of "CODA" parallels his own family and how he collaborated with director Sian Heder to bring authenticity to the film.

Interview With "Demonic" Cinematographer, Byron Kopman
20 augustus 2021 · 16 min
Releasing from IFC Midnight this weekend, "Demonic" represents many firsts for "District 9" director Neil Blomkamp. It's the first time he's working within the horror genre. The film also marks the return of the director to low-budget filmmaking after his first three films employed higher budgets and visual effects. This also marks the first time he's working with cinematographer Byron Kopman on one of his feature-length films. Byron was kind enough to take some time to explain his working relationship with Neil, the experience of shooting the film, and more! Take a listen down below and enjoy! Lees meer

19 augustus 2021 · 19 min
"Cryptozoo" is, without a doubt, one of the most unique experiences one is likey to have, not just with animation, but with any film this year. The highly detailed world, creative character designs, and level of imagination needed for a project like this have taken director/writer and producer Jane Samborski many years to bring to life. The film made its debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and now with its theatrical release coming this weekend from Magnolia Pictures. The husband and wife filmmaking team were kind enough to spend a few minutes discussing with us the work that went into making one of the year's best animated films. Interview With "Free Guy" Production Designer, Ethan Tobman
13 augustus 2021 · 25 min
After what has felt like a forever-long delay from its initial release due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 20th Century Studios is finally releasing "Free Guy" in theaters this weekend starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery & Taika Waititi. It's been called "The Truman Show" for a new generation, and the result is an enthusiastic, fun, and surprisingly thoughtful social commentary on free will and the imaginary worlds we create for ourselves outside of the real one. That fictional world in this film is "Free City," which required creative world-building and ingenuity to bring to life on the big screen. Production Designer Ethan Tobman was kind enough to discuss his work on the film with us, which you can listen to below. Enjoy! Lees meer

We are down to the final two podcasts in our 2013 retrospective. Next up is David O. Russell's hotly contested Best Picture nominee "American Hustle," starring Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper. Receiving positive reviews, strong box-office, and 10 Academy Award nominations at the time of its release (including all four of its main actors), the film has always had a divisive reaction amongst those in the industry and the online community, which continues to this day. Eight years later, what do we think of the film today? Has the story held up? What about the performances? How do we feel about O. Russell's stylistic attempts to mimic Martin Scorsese? We discuss all of these elements and more in this messy review for an equally messy movie. Joining me for this review, I have Amanda Spears, Michael Schwartz, Casey Lee Clark, Zoe Rose Bryant, and guest Ryan C. Showers.

Interviews With The Production Designer & Cinematographer For "The Green Knight"
9 augustus 2021 · 33 min
There's no denying that David Lowery's A24 fantasy epic "The Green Knight" is one of the most visually stunning achievements of 2021. Every design element had to be meticulously planned, constructed, and executed to bring the Arthurian legend to the screen. Two of the people most instrumental in that process were Production Designer Jade Healy and Cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo. Both were kind enough to spend a few moments with me discussing their work on the film, their collaborations with Lowery, and what they have coming up next. "The Green Knight"
3 augustus 2021 · 1 uur 11 min
This week, Sara Clements, Casey Lee Clark & Dan Bayer join me for our second podcast review of the newest film from filmmaker David Lowery, "The Green Knight," starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton & Sean Harris. The fantasy epic has divided audiences and united critics with its meditative and beautiful approach to the Arthurian poem it is based on. Filled with symbolism and no easy answers to its challenging questions about its themes, we have many interpretations of this new work of art from Lowery. As a result, this is a spoiler-filled discussion, so please don't listen if you have not already seen the movie. What did we think of the story, the craftsmanship, performances, and the many themes the film is working with? Tune in below to listen to us help each other sort our thoughts, and enjoy! Lees meer

"Gravity"
29 juli 2021 · 21 min
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Lees meer
Today is a big one. We're reviewing Alfonso Cuarón's technical masterpiece "Gravity," starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. A visual stunner upon its release, the film begged to be seen on the biggest screen possible (and in 3D) with its groundbreaking cinematography and visual effects. The story deeply resonated with audiences, too, bringing in a ton of box office and seven Academy Award wins, including Cuarón's first Best Director win. What do we think of it all of these years later? How does it hold up watching it at home as opposed to in the theater? What did we think of the story, the performances, and the craft on display? We discuss all of this and more in our review down below! Joining me for this review, I have Casey Lee Clark, Dan Bayer, Josh Parham, Michael Schwartz, Will Mavity & Patreon guest Matt Ward.
