No matter how much you do for your PDA, autistic child, does it never feel like enough? You might be measuring yourself by a standard never made for you. Lees meer

If you're parenting a PDA, autistic or high-needs child, you're likely co-regulating, accommodating, researching late at night and adjusting your whole life. And still, when your child isn't getting better the way you think they should, the thought comes in: "What if I'm not doing enough? I'm failing my child."

In this episode, I share the years I tried to be superhuman for my son, the night in the garage when I finally caught the pattern, and what helped me step off a standard that was never meant for a family like ours.

    In this episode:

The pattern so many parents of PDA, autistic kids get stuck in

Why you're carrying an extraordinary load while expecting yourself to function as if you're not

Why "What am I doing wrong?" is often the fight response turned inward

Grieving the life you thought you'd have

The island: changing the standard, not trying harder to meet it

"Am I giving up on my child?"

Two practices to help you feel like you're doing enough

Part 4 of a four-part series on when your PDA, autistic child can't separate from you, and this is the last one.

Most of us are not giving too much. What may be happening is that we're giving from survival, or that survival is keeping us from giving enough. And from inside survival, you can't hear your own read of your own child.

    In this episode:

    1. The fight my husband and I kept having, and the years I spent looking for an expert to settle it

    2. The night I typed "pathological demand avoidance" into Google, and what my body did before my mind caught up

    3. The two survival patterns underneath the swing — we give in because we can't be with their distress, and we push because of what we were taught

    4. The three nervous system patterns that make your own signal impossible to hear: stuck on ON, pretend calm, and dorsal shutdown

    5. Story follows state, and why "just trust your gut" is not useful advice for a parent in our situation

    6. What your child is reading in you while you're making the decision

    7. How to get to know your survival signature and your own instinct signature, and tell them apart

    8. What to do with everything you're told, so other people's frameworks become yours

If you're in the thick of this, start with my free 3 Shifts guide — the three patterns most parents get pulled into during a meltdown, and how to shift them: https://www.illuminateu.ca/3-shifts-free-guide-podcast

For a long stretch of my son's burnout I sat beside him in our family room for hours a day, barely moving, holding my pee, because every time my attention left him his anxiety rose. We still have holes in our doors from that time.

And underneath it all was the question I know you're carrying too. Am I giving too much? And will they ever learn?

In Part 3 of this four-part series I go through:

    • The seven reasons your PDA, autistic child genuinely needs this much from you — a lower threat threshold, monotropism, and autonomy as a survival need, not a preference.

    • What the research actually says about responsiveness, so you can put down the word coddling.

    • The three things that can keep your child stuck even when you accommodate well: anxiety, OCD, and the predictive brain.

    • How to tell whether this is your child, with three questions to ask yourself.

    • How to hold accommodation and gentle challenge together, in five steps.

    • Exactly what I did with my son, starting with the bathroom and then leaving the house, with the real timeline and how long it took.

If that cycle is your day, start with my free 3 Shifts guide — the three patterns most parents get pulled into during a meltdown, and how to shift them: https://www.illuminateu.ca/3-shifts-free-guide-podcast

If you're co-regulating a PDA, autistic or highly sensitive child who can't be away from you, you know how the day goes. The demands. The questions. The needing you to stay right there and not move. You're okay with it for a while, and then something in you runs out.

In this episode I tell you about the night I sat on the bathroom floor crying after getting angry at my son again, and what I finally understood about why that cycle kept repeating.

Then I walk you through seven moves, one for each of the seven things that get triggered in your nervous system inside this kind of parenting:

    1. When the urge to get away comes — let it move

    2. When the NO is stuck — let that move too

    3. When guilt and self-criticism arrive — meet them with compassion

    4. When the fear about their future grips — let them be distressed briefly, and repair

    5. When the grief is there — make room for it

    6. When you feel trapped — give yourself choice

    7. Take in nourishment, however small

We also go into what we're aiming for: building capacity, so you co-regulate from presence instead of survival. And the belief underneath all of my giving, that I should give up all of my needs, and where it came from.

This is Part 2 of a four-part series.

If you have a PDA, autistic or highly sensitive child who can't separate from you, you know this already. They follow you room to room. They hear the toilet flush and call you back. You can't cook dinner without them needing you every few minutes, even when the dinner is for them.

And when you do take a little space, you pay for it afterwards. So eventually you stop taking it at all.

In this episode I share the morning I drove away from my house while my son screamed and banged on the car — and why it felt, inside me, like I was dying too.

Then I walk you through the seven things that happen in your nervous system inside this kind of parenting:

    1. Blocked flight energy — the urge to get away with nowhere to go

    2. Blocked fight energy — the NO you can't say

    3. Guilt and self-criticism for having those urges at all

    4. The fear and pressure about your child's future

    5. Grief, including the grief of feeling completely unsupported

    6. The trapped feeling all of it piles into

    7. Your child slowly becoming a cue of danger to your system

We also go into the meanings underneath each one, where those beliefs actually came from, and the one pattern that makes co-regulation the most exhausting of all — I'm not okay unless you're okay.

This is part one of a three-part series. Next week: the seven moves that make co-regulating a child who can't leave your side so much easier on you.

In Part 2 of this three-part series on aggression, Afshan shares what actually changed it in her own home — where storms went from five hours of daily rage to about thirty minutes, maybe once a week. It was never the perfect strategy (there isn't one). It was learning to move out of the “trauma vortex” and into a safe-enough state, right in the middle of the storm — and the specific shifts that make that possible, both inside you and with your child.

You'll hear why staying “calm” can backfire, the difference between stopping a behaviour and punishing it, what to do when the hitting is aimed at you (or someone else), and how the storms actually get shorter over time.

This is the practical one. Part 1 is the foundation — what's happening inside YOU. Part 3, coming next week, is about the fear of the future: what this behaviour means for your child down the road, and why the way they truly learn isn't what we were taught.

It was 1 a.m., and Alma Galván was in tears. Both of her sons had severe autism, ADHD and sensory differences. Doctors told her to institutionalize her oldest son, and daily two-hour meltdowns had become normal. She remembers thinking, *"This isn't life."* Lees meer

With no internet or roadmap, Alma spent seven years searching for answers. What she discovered changed everything: gentle developmental movements that helped build the brain's lower centers, reducing chronic survival responses. Her sons, who were both non-speaking until after age six, are now adults in their 30s who are working and thriving.

But the biggest surprise wasn't just what happened to her children—it was what happened to her. As she practiced the movements alongside them, her own nervous system began to settle for the first time in years.

That experience led Alma to create **Alma Integration**, a program designed not just for children, but for parents.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Why movement reaches the brain when reasoning and rewards can't

    • The role of the pons in survival, sensory overwhelm and meltdowns

    • Why a regulated parent is part of the intervention—not just the support

    • Why play and connection are essential for lasting change

    • How to tell whether your child is leaning in or pulling away

    • Alma's remarkable healing journey after 21 days in the ICU

    • Why healing happens in spirals, not straight lines

    • Two simple practices you can begin today—for you and your child

If you've felt any of those things — you're not broken. You're stuck in a shame spiral. And in this episode, I'm going to show you exactly what's driving these loops, what's underneath them, and how to start breaking free.

I share a real day from our hardest years — the morning I ran at my son like an animal, the afternoon I watched him fail to connect online, the evening I found out we hadn't been invited to a family event we were always included in. All three shame loops. One regular day.

    Then I walk you through:

→ Why shame is not a personal flaw — it's ancient survival biology wired into all of us

→ What actually happens in your nervous system when shame gets triggered (including the inner critic, dorsal vagal shutdown, and the emotions trapped underneath)

→ The childhood wound that was already there before your child arrived — and why this parenting keeps pulling that thread

→ What's really underneath each shame loop: the terror, grief, helplessness and longing that shame is protecting you from feeling

→ Why breaking free from shame is one of the most powerful things you can do for your child's nervous system — not just your own

→ Two practices: working with your inner critic, and Dr. Kristin Neff's 3-step self-compassion framework applied directly to shame

This is deep work. And it's also the most important work you can do — not just for yourself, but for your child, and for the generations that come after.

I'm sharing the moment I watched my son laugh — during one of his first good days in years — and felt absolutely nothing. Not relief. Not joy. Not ease. Just flatness. And what that moment taught me about what chronic stress actually does to a parent's nervous system.

Because here's what I've come to understand: we don't lose our joy, our aliveness, or our well-being. We lose access to them. And that is a completely different problem — with a completely different solution.

    In this episode:

    — Why joy, ease, aliveness, and well-being disappear under chronic stress (and why it's not a character flaw)

    — The difference between losing yourself and losing access to yourself

    — What I call the Inner Resource

    — the unshakable ground of well-being that was never actually gone

    — How I found my way back through sensation in my own body

    — the tingling, the pulsing, the quiet aliveness that was there all along

    — Why you don't have to wait for your child to be okay before you start feeling okay

In this episode, I explore the nervous system realities underneath control, rigidity, predictability, pressure, and fear in parenting.

    We’ll talk about:

    • why flexibility can feel emotionally and neurologically unsafe for many parents

    • how survival patterns can create rigidity and over-control

    • the difference between rule-based safety and nervous system safety

    • why uncertainty can trigger fear and catastrophic thinking

    • how conditioning around performance, structure, and success shapes parenting reactions

    • cognitive rigidity as a nervous system survival adaptation

    • and how parenting these children can become an invitation into deeper nervous system healing and flexibility.

This episode is especially for parents of PDA, autistic, ADHD, and hypersensitive children who find themselves caught between wanting to be responsive to their child’s needs… while also feeling overwhelmed by fear, uncertainty, and the loss of control.

In this episode, I talk about a very real and often overwhelming experience many parents of PDA, autistic, ADHD, and other highly sensitive or neurodivergent children go through — when their child enters burnout and begins withdrawing from life.

But this isn’t just about your child.

It’s also about what happens inside of you.The fear about the future.

We hear that our nervous system regulates our child’s nervous system — and that message is true. But many parents walk away from that idea believing that regulation means being calm and perfectly composed no matter what.

And when we can’t do that — which is often — we feel like we’re failing.

In this episode, Afshan Tafler explores a different understanding of nervous system regulation in parenting.

Real regulation doesn’t always look calm. Sometimes it looks messy. Sometimes it looks like feeling big emotions while learning how to work with them safely instead of suppressing them.

Children don’t learn regulation from perfectly calm parents. They learn it by watching how we navigate big feelings and come back to connection.

If you’re parenting a hypersensitive, high-needs, Autistic, PDA, or ADHD child, you may have whispered that sentence to yourself more than once.

You worked hard. You made intentional choices. You tried to build a stable, meaningful, “good” life. And yet somehow, instead of feeling like you’re winning at life, you feel exhausted… behind… maybe even like you’re failing.

In this episode, I share the night I sat on my bathroom floor convinced my life had fallen apart — and the realization that changed everything.

The truth is, most of the suffering wasn’t just coming from the circumstances.

It was coming from measuring my life against a definition of a “good life” that no longer fit.

    We’ll explore:

The hidden “contract” many parents carry without realizing it

How the predictive brain creates expectations about what life should look like

Why parenting a high-needs child can feel like loss and failure

And the powerful nervous-system shift that happens when you redefine what a good life actually means

Because sometimes the breakthrough isn’t changing your child.

    It’s changing the lens.

And when the lens changes, your nervous system stabilizes — even before the circumstances do.

In this episode, I explore why sibling harm is often the most dysregulating experience for parents, especially when one child is hypersensitive, PDA, autistic, or high-needs. We slow this moment down and look at what’s really happening inside the parent’s nervous system when protection takes over.

You’ll learn:• why these moments trigger intense fight, freeze, guilt, or rage responses• how trauma, moral responsibility, and “I’m failing as a parent” beliefs compound the reaction• why there are often no good choices — and how to work with that reality• how rupture and repair actually support nervous system healing for all children• how shifting meaning (out of good/bad and into allowance and context) restores regulation and choiceThis episode is not about excusing harm or forcing yourself to stay calm.

It’s about understanding why these moments feel so overwhelming — and how to move through them with more clarity, compassion, and nervous system safety.

You’re parenting inside an incredibly complex nervous-system reality.

Many parents of PDA, autistic, and high-needs children carry an enormous, often invisible load. It’s not only the day-to-day tasks, but the constant thinking, adapting, worrying, and feeling responsible for your child’s development, wellbeing, and future — often without clear reassurance or relief.

In this episode, Afshan Tafler shares her personal story of when that weight became overwhelming — the moment her son stopped going to school, the years when learning seemed to disappear, and the fear and responsibility that settled into her body and never seemed to turn off.

She also breaks down why responsibility can feel so heavy for parents of high-needs children — not as a personal failure, but as a very human response to:

carrying more than most parents ever have to carry

outdated definitions of success that no longer fit

feeling alone, trapped, and responsible without an endpoint

chronic fear, grief, and a lack of visible reward for your efforts

Most importantly, Afshan shares what actually helps — not to remove responsibility, but to carry it differently, in ways that support nervous system safety, meaning, choice, and sustainability.

If you’ve been feeling exhausted by how much you hold — and wondering why it all feels so heavy — this conversation is for you.

And before you know it, you’re reacting.Frustrated. Angry. Overwhelmed. Wondering if your child is being defiant, willful, or choosing not to cooperate.

In this episode, we slow that moment way down. We explore the #1 belief that dysregulates parents — especially those parenting PDA, demand-avoidant, autistic, or highly sensitive children — and why this belief gets activated so quickly in our nervous systems.

    You’ll learn:
    • Why inconsistency in your child’s abilities often gets misread as defiance or unwillingness
    • How old conditioning around will, effort, and motivation shapes the way your brain interprets behavior
    • Why pressure causes loss of access rather than increased effort — especially for PDA and demand-avoidant nervous systems
    • How your own nervous system, stress load, and past experiences influence your reactions
    • A nervous-system-based way to gently shift this belief so your body can move out of defense and into clarity and choice

This episode is not about fixing your child. It’s about understanding what’s actually happening — in their nervous system and in yours — so you can respond from a place that feels steadier, calmer, and more compassionate.

Many parents learn about Pathological Demand Avoidance and finally feel relief. Things start to make sense. You give more choice. More flexibility. More accommodation.

And yet, over time, something else can happen.

Your child begins to control when you eat, where you sit, when you can rest, or whether you can meet your own basic needs. Even when you know your child isn’t trying to control you, your nervous system may still feel trapped, threatened, or on edge.

In this episode, we explore why a PDA child’s need for control can feel so dysregulating for parents — and why this reaction makes so much sense from a nervous system perspective.

    You’ll learn:

    • what a PDA child’s need for control is actually communicating

    • what gets activated inside parents when autonomy and agency start to disappear

    • why understanding PDA “in your head” doesn’t always calm your body

    • how to support your child’s need for autonomy while still maintaining your own sense of choice, agency, and safety

This conversation is not about doing PDA “better.” It’s about understanding the nervous system collision underneath the struggle — and finding a more sustainable way forward that includes both of you.

In this episode, I share the one question that changed how I experience parenting my PDA child. Not because our challenges went away, but because this question consistently brings me out of despair and survival and back into personal power, learning, and meaning.

We explore why parents of PDA children are on a real hero’s journey — one that isn’t about arriving at a perfect ending, but about who we are becoming along the way. I share how focusing on what we are learning (instead of what we wish were different) helps us reconnect with agency, choice, and purpose.

I also reflect on some of the biggest lessons this journey has taught me — about nervous system regulation, self-compassion, meeting my needs alongside my child’s, releasing fear, and shedding deep conditioning that no longer serves.

This episode is about post-traumatic growth, nervous system healing, and learning to experience this journey as one that is shaping you — not breaking you.

The longing for a beautiful, connected Christmas. The grief when reality looks nothing like you imagined. The pressure of family gatherings, expectations, and “making memories.” And the exhaustion of holding it all together while your nervous system is already stretched thin.

In this episode, I share my personal story of how the holidays slowly fell apart as my son’s PDA, OCD, and sensory needs intensified — and how that loss brought up deep grief, childhood conditioning, and nervous system activation I didn’t initially understand.

    We’ll explore:

why the holidays activate grief, shame, and survival responses for parents of PDA kids

how childhood conditioning and holiday fantasies increase triggering

how allowance, letting go of expectations, and grieving losses reduce nervous system stress

how to approach family gatherings (or opt out) with less shame and more self-trust

and how to find glimmers and unexpected gifts in a simpler, lower-pressure season

This episode isn’t about making the holidays look better. It’s about helping you feel better — more grounded, regulated, and at peace — even when the season is messy, quiet, or very different than you hoped.

Parenting a PDA or high-needs child challenges your sense of control more than anything else — and not because you’re doing it wrong. It’s because your nervous system has been conditioned to equate control with safety, success, responsibility, and “good parenting.” But PDA neurology doesn’t respond to pressure or structure the way the world expects it to — which means letting go of control becomes a necessary, emotional, and often terrifying part of the journey. We talk about why your body clings to control, why letting go feels so threatening, and how to release expectations without giving up on your child or abandoning yourself.

You’ll learn what’s really happening in your nervous system, why control stops working with PDA neurology, how childhood conditioning gets activated, and how to begin choosing internal safety over external control.

If you react even when you know better, start with my free 7 Truths guide — why that happens, and what actually changes it: https://www.illuminateu.ca/7-truths-free-guide-podcast

In this deeply personal and trauma-informed episode, Afshan Tafler shares her story of parenting a hypersensitive, high-needs, PDA child whose violent outbursts left her terrified, exhausted, and full of shame. From calling 911 to navigating complex PTSD and nervous system collapse, she unpacks the raw truth many parents are afraid to admit:

Sometimes it feels like abuse. And your body doesn’t lie.

    This episode explores:

    • Why your nervous system interprets your child’s violence as threat

    • What trauma from your own child does to your brain, body, and beliefs

    • How to reclaim safety, agency, and meaning—even in the chaos

    • Research that validates your experience

    • A soul-level perspective that may help you feel less alone

Whether you’re in the thick of it or still healing from what you’ve lived through, this is a powerful, compassionate reminder:

You are not broken. You are not failing. You are not alone.

And there is a way to feel whole again.
