THE LADY, OR THE TIGER? by FRANK STOCKTON
22 januari 2018 · 22 min
In "The Lady, or the Tiger", by Frank Stockton, a semi-barbaric king has devised a trial by chance that offers the accused a choice of two doors. Behind one is a beautiful lady who will become his wife once he opnes the door. Behind the other is a man-eating tiger waiting to spring upon whoever opens the door. In the story, the king has discovered that his daughter is madly in love with a handsome courtier, so naturally, like any doting father, he puts the courier in jail to await his trial. Meanwhile, the king's daughter finds out something very interesting about the lady who has been chosen and will be placed behind the second door. Lees meer

JIM BAKER'S BLUE JAY YARN by MARK TWAIN

HISTORY'S REAL BEAUTY & THE BEAST: PETRUS & CATHERINE GONSOLVUS
3 april 2017 · 11 min
"History's Real Beauty and The Beast: Petrus and Anne Gonsalvus": Lees meer
This is a follow up to our recent episode titled "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST", which gave the abridged version of the Adult Fairy Tale written by Marie de Villanueve in 1748. It is very possible that Villanueve's inspiration may have come from the lives of Petrus and Catherine Gonsalvus, who were French courtisans best known for Petrus's very unusual appearance- looking more "beast" than man, with a full covering of long hair all over his body. The true story is so incredible that it seems invented- but it is documented. You are left to decide of they were the inspiration for Beauty and the Beast. THE WENDIGO by ALGERNON BLACKWOOD (Part 1)
27 februari 2017 · 56 min
"The Wendigo" Pt 1 by Algernon Blackwood: Blackwood used the legend of the wendigo to create a terrifying tale of a group of hunters in the Canadian wilderness who encounter this demonic spirit-monster. Real-life stories of the wendigo abound, dating back to the late 1700's in North America. Few writers can capture the irrational fear that even the most seasoned travelers can experience in the wilderness- but Blackwood is a master. #Bigfoot #Wendigo #Legends Music: Mattia Cupelli Dark Tension Rising Lees meer

THE WRECK OF THE ROYAL CHARTER" by CHARLES DICKENS
6 februari 2017 · 22 min
Charles Dickens had heard the news of the wreck of the Royal Charter in Wales in October of 1859 and traveled to that area during Christmas. The salvage operation was still in progress, and the small village and the churches were still suffering the shocks of handling so much tragedy in so short a time. Dickens wrote of his visit in Chapter Two of his collection 'THE UNCOMMERCIAL TRAVELER" and shares his thoughts and experiences with the reader. #CharlesDickens #royalcharter #wrecks Lees meer

THE SHIPWRECK by CHARLES DICKENS
30 januari 2017 · 24 min
This story by Charles Dickens is a part of a larger story about the 1859 wreck of The Royal Charter, a steam powered clipper on its way from Australia to Liverpool, and carrying 370 passengers and a crew of 112. Many of the passengers were gold miners returning from the Australian Gold rush with their riches, and their was gold in the cargo hold. Unfortunately, a huge storm came up as the ship approached the coast of England, and the ship and all but 21 of its passengers were killed in the wreck. Charles Dickens, who then was an already famous writer in England, was on the scene soon after the wreck and interviewed the people involved in the wreck and rescue, and from this visit sprang two stories, one, a fictional account, featured here, and another, based on an interview with the local Reverend and witnesses, coming here next week. Also next week, our sister show 1001 Heroes will feature the story of The Royal Charter , the wreck and rescue attempts, and the treasure that is still being hunted today. SOMEONE MUST PAY
26 oktober 2016 · 7 min
This old tale tells of a thief, who, upon unlawfully entering a house and breaking his leg on a weak window sill while climbing in, brashly goes to court to blame his broken leg on the carpenter who built the sill. The carpenter passes the buck...and so on down the line. The judge sees no problem with the original crime, and follows the reasoning of the thief. The tale makes a mockery of justice and illustrates the frustrations of a citizenry living in a situation where those responsible for crimes are not punished because the powers that be are willing to absolve the wrongdoers of any responsibility.
