Allah SWT stated that the earlier nations who were righteous and obedient received the rewards for their good deeds. This shall be the case, until the Day of Judgment. Therefore, whoever follows the Prophet ﷺ shall acquire eternal happiness.

By revealing this ayah, Allah SWT clarifies the misconception that a person will enter Jannah solely based on their beliefs or actions. The correct belief (belief in the Oneness of Allah SWT) followed with the righteous actions (done as per the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ) will lead us to Jannah. Just because we are Muslims, we are not given Jannah. We must perform righteous deeds as taught by the Prophet ﷺ. A person who does not believe in Allah SWT will have all his deeds rejected.

Prophet Musa AS was extremely kind and compassionate towards his people. His nation, however, did not respond with the same behavior. They kept disobeying the instructions of Allah SWT and demanded one thing after another. But Allah SWT was still Merciful towards them. He sheltered them with the clouds and provided food from the heavens. Yet, they were ungrateful.

Upon his people’s request, Prophet Musa AS supplicated to Allah SWT for water. Allah SWT instructed him to strike his staff on a stone and water would come. Prophet Musa AS followed the instructions and twelve springs burst out.

Allah SWT says, “Eat and drink from the provision of Allah…,” we should know how to fulfill our needs from the permissible and pure provision that Allah SWT has provided for us. We should be content with what we have been blessed with and not be jealous of what others have. we should ask Allah SWT to bless us from His Unlimited Bounty.

Tawbah to Allah is supreme and there is no need for having a punishment being superimposed on the person if his crime was hidden by Allah SWT. Why was the Tawbah for the Israelites such a difficult proposition? Their defiance to Allah knew no bounds and hence, they faced the wrath of Allah in which a very loud explosion struck them and they died instantly - the whole Banu Israel.

They were brought back to life so that they fully comprehend what had just happened and also to make them aware of Allah the Almighty. Failing to abide by the command of their Prophet Musa AS and their arrogance to have a word with Allah directly and not through Musa AS cost them dearly and they were put in their places most appropriately by Allah SWT.

Firaun had a dream in which he saw a fire emerge from Bayt Al-Maqdis and then the fire entered the houses of Egypt with the exception of the Children of Israel. After the dream, Firaun ordered that every newborn male among the Children of Israel be killed and that the girls be left alone. He also commanded that the Children of Israel be given tasks of hard labor and assigned the most humiliating jobs. Allah SWT says “And in that was a great trial from your Lord,” meaning that although Pharaoh was tormenting them it was in fact a trial from Allah SWT.

Allah SWT shares how He saved the Children of Israel from Firaun. When Prophet Musa AS gathered his people to escape the tyranny of Firaun, he and his army chased them. Allah SWT parted the sea, drowned the army of Firaun and saved Musa AS with his people. All of this happened before their eyes.

“And saved you,” means: Allah saved the Israelites from Firaun and his army while they were watching them, bringing relief to their hearts and humiliation to their enemy.

Whenever the Prophet ﷺ was tested he would seek the help of Allah SWT through prayer. Patience means to control oneself at the first sight of the calamity. The Prophet ﷺ termed patience as a blessing. He said no person has been favored more than he who has been given patience.

Who are the Patient Ones? Allah SWT tells us that they are the Khashi’een. They are those who have the fear of Allah SWT in their hearts. They do not fret over their problems but rather turn to Allah SWT and speak with Him.

Allah SWT further describes them in the next Ayah. They know that they will be gathered before Allah SWT one day. If they don’t turn to Him in this world, then eventually they have to stand before Him on the Day of Judgment. They cannot escape this meeting.

In this world, prayer is our meeting with Allah SWT. We should be focused whilst praying and be fully aware of what we are saying and before Whom we are standing. He who stands before Allah SWT in this world will have no fear of standing before Him on the Day of Judgment.

When the Prophet ﷺ informed the people that he was the Messenger of Allah SWT and that his description also appears in the previous Scriptures, the people went to the Jewish Rabbis to confirm if this was indeed true. The Rabbis, instead of telling the truth, made statements that confused the people. They could not distinguish what is right and what is incorrect. They could not ascertain whether they are to follow Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or not. Allah SWT warns the Children of Israel and after them all of us to not conceal the truth. Whatever knowledge of the Deen that we have must be shared with other people for their betterment and progress in the light of Deen.

We are in a serious need to reprimand ourselves as to how we are not bothered. People are in need of being guided or they would lose their path and end up in the Hellfire.

“And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear [only] Me.”

This Ayah reminds the children of Israel that the Qur’an which is sent down to Muhammad ﷺ, is a source of glad tidings and contains the Truth from Allah SWT and affirms what was revealed beforehand in the Tawrah and the Injil.

It asks the Israelites not to be the first to deny the Qur'an. This Ayat suggests that the man who is the first to deny and disbelieve will not only incur the sin of his own denial but also bear the additional burden of the sin of misleading all those who follow his example and will thus have to undergo a multiple punishments. Several Ayat of the Quran and the hadith of the Prophet SAW emphasize this point.

    وَلاَ تَشْتَرُواْ بِآيَـتِي ثَمَنًا قَلِيلاً

It means, “Do not substitute faith in My Ayat and belief in My Prophet with the life of this world and its lusts which are minute and bound to end.”

The selection of Messengers from among them.
The revelation of the Holy Books.
Saving them from the agonies of Firaun and his people.

So Allah SWT ordered them to remember what He has bestowed upon their forefathers and not to forget His favors. This Ayah contains encouragement, followed by a warning. Allah SWT first called the Children of Israel, using encouragement. Then He warned them so that they might return to the Truth, follow the Messenger ﷺ, follow the prohibitions and commands and believe in its content of the Noble Quran.

Prophet Adam AS was sincerely regretful of the mistake he had committed and wanted to ask for forgiveness but was unable to express his regret in words. Allah SWT forgives the sins of whoever repents, thus exhibiting His Kindness and Mercy towards His creation. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Adam AS committed the mistake of going against Allah SWT order and, as a result, they too were ordered to leave Paradise and live on earth for a temporary period.

Iblees had disbelief, arrogance, and rebellion, all of which caused him to be expelled from the presence of Allah SWT and His Mercy. This is important and worth emphasizing because in all parts of life, religious or non-religious – Iblees will try to make us follow his example of disobeying Allah SWT out of arrogance against others. So we have to admit that we are weak slaves of Allah SWT who are always dependent upon Him, and there is no strength or power except Allah SWT.

He (Allah) said: “I know that which you do not know” which implies that only Allah SWT knew the benefit of creating this type of creature. Islam provides us with the astonishing details of the creation of Adam AS. Both Christian and Jewish traditions are remarkably similar yet importantly different from the Quran. Why is this ancient tale important, and what does the Quranic story of Adam and Eve say about humankind?

Satan did not say to Adam and Eve “go eat from that tree” nor did he tell them to disobey God. He whispered into their hearts and planted thoughts and desires. Their minds became filled with thoughts of the tree, and one day they decided to eat from it. Adam and Eve behaved as all human beings do; they became preoccupied with their own thoughts and the whisperings of Satan and they forgot the warning from Allah SWT. It is at this point that the Jewish and Christian traditions differ greatly from Islam. At no point do the words of Allah SWT in the Quran, or the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ indicate that Satan came to Adam and Eve in the form of a snake or serpent.

According to the Quran, despite their momentary weakness, both Adam and Eve sincerely repent, and Allah SWT lovingly forgives them providing them words of comfort. Eating the fruit of the tree was a mistake committed by both Adam and Eve. The descendants of Adam AS are not being punished for the sins of their original parents.

Ayah 28 commences by expressing surprise at those who insist on being ungrateful to Allah SWT and denying Him. The disbelievers had never denied Allah SWT rather only the Prophet ﷺ. But the Qur’an places such a denial in the same category as the denial of Allah SWT Himself. The Ayah reminds man that once he was “dead” or that he had no life. Allah SWT made us into a man and gave us life. Allah warns us that our life will be taken and given back to us a second time which refers to the Day of Judgment.

According to this Ayah, the chief blessing of Allah SWT for man is life. But the Ayah counts death too as a blessing because physical death is the door to the life of the other world or the HereAfter after which there is no death. Allah SWT reasserts this very aspect by having described our entire life journey, and if we truly reflect on it, it scares us because we realize that in the end we will return to Him and be held responsible for what we did.

After Allah SWT mentioned the proofs of His creating humans, He mentions another proof, that is, the creation of the heavens and earth. This Ayah indicates that Allah SWT started creation by creating the earth and then He made Heaven into seven Heavens. Allah SWT created this land for us and provided for all our needs and then He created the sky and created seven perfect skies. And this land and sky work to fulfill our needs to provide us with livelihood, fruits, vegetation and much more. And indeed Allah SWT knows everything.

In ayah number 26, Allah SWT stated that He does not shy away or hesitate from, giving an example of anything, whether the example involves a significant or an insignificant matter. The mosquito lives as long as it needs food, but when it gets fat, it dies. This is also the example of people whom Allah mentioned in the Qur’an: when they acquire (and collect the delights of) the life of this world, Allah takes it away from them.

Who are the Fasiqeen? The word Fasiqeen means those who aim at transgressing the commandments of Allah. A man who commits a major sin and does not repent, or who insists on committing minor sins and makes it a habit is called a fasiq.

In Ayat number 27, we are acquainted with the characteristics of the disbelievers and they contradict the qualities of the believers. What was the covenant? Listen intently. This Ayat is about the disbelievers and the hypocrites among the People of the Book.

The Quran will guide or misguide people based on their Intentions before reading it. If they are seeking guidance from it, Allah will guide them. If they are seeking criticism for it, Allah will misguide them through it. The Qur’an says that real losers are those who go against Divine commandments. That would be the real loss when compared to the trivial loss of this world which is too small to be given any serious consideration.

Allah SWT begins to prove the truth of Prophethood after He stated that there is no deity worthy of worship except Him. If anyone claims that he was sent with did not come from Allah SWT, then Allah SWT openly challenges those people to produce something similar to what the Prophet ﷺ has brought to you, using the aid of anyone other than Allah SWT.

However, Allah SWT clearly stated without doubt that the Qur’an will never be opposed or challenged by anything similar to it for the rest of eternity. In Ayat number 21, “O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous.”

In the above Ayah, Allah SWT mentions His Oneness in Divinity and stated that He has favored His servants by bringing them to life after they did not exist. Taqwa in this Ayah means ‘protect’ yourself. To summarise, this Ayah is a call to all of mankind to emphasize on the Oneness of Allah and the significance of the basic declaration of the Islamic creed.

Having said that, it is not enough to affirm the Oneness of Allah SWT orally. Rather one must have a complete certitude, and must also have the truth always present close to one’s heart, for Tawheed is to see Allah as One, and not merely to say that He is One.

The reality of the present times is that even though the number of those who respect this basic formula of the Islamic creed runs to millions, but sadly, their lives do not exhibit Tawheed. This needs to be analyzed and the concept of Tawheed needs to be reinstated tie and time again in order for us to have some form of respect when we stand resurrected on the Day of Judgement.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into an understanding of Ayats 17 onwards of Surah Al Baqarah. In these Ayaah, we understand hypocrisy( Nifaq) with more examples. Allah SWT has described everything with examples in the Quran. Lees meer

The lessons that can be imbibed from these Ayahs are:

No one can guide or help a person, who does not seek help from Allah.
A hypocrite cannot imitate others in guidance due to being blind to the truth.
The Munafiqeen are a lost cause and are blocked off from guidance in every way

An example is given in relation to the hypocrites by saying that they are like a person who started a fire when the fire was lit, and illuminated the surrounding area, the person benefited from it and felt safe. Then the fire was suddenly extinguished. Such is the case with the hypocrites who preferred misguidance over guidance, deviation over righteousness.

Allah SWT is pointing here towards the darkness of the heart. When does a person lose Noor (light) of the heart? This happens when his heart is filled with worldly wishes, shirk, and hypocrisy. Those who don’t want help Allah SWT also doesn’t help them. So a hypocrite that pretends Islam and conceals Kufr, will not benefit since he does not truly believe in Islam.

Some additional characteristics of the hypocrites are described in the next Ayat that they are deaf, dumb and blind to Allah SWT because they do not have Iman and they do not give attention towards the right path. They do not want to listen and even if they listen they do not accept it. The only thing visible to them is the difficulties in the way of Islam, but they cannot observe the permanent benefits out of these difficulties.

In Ayat number 12, the main address is to the hypocrites. When they are told not to cause mischief on the earth they say, “We are peacemakers”. Allah SWT confirms in this Ayah, that hypocrites (Munafiqeen) think that they are reformers but they have lost the ability to perceive. By their blind arrogance, they suppress the good and encourage evil. Since they are so obviously ignorant, the hypocrites are unaware of their degree of deviation and ignorance, and such a situation is more dangerous and far from the truth than one who is aware.

Hypocrites misdirect, mislead and deceive the believers. The hypocrites also want to have a share of the benefits and gains that the believers might possibly acquire. They degrade the believers by rejecting Iman and for his desires and wishes, he accepts the religion (Deen) and only performs those tasks which are easy to perform.

Allah SWT says that they are Daaleen (went astray) who have no Hidayah in the matters of Ilm and Amal and they are putting their useless efforts which just amplifies their ignorance.

In Ayat 9, the hypocrites are being discussed at great length in the fact that in the company of the believers, the hypocrites would pretend to be pious Muslims, but the moment they were asked to do something for the sake of Allah SWT such as performing an act of worship, giving charity, or going on Jihad, they would back out. This is an indication of their total ignorance. But they didn't realize that even if they attempted to conceal their true emotions, Allah SWT knows what the hearts conceal. Through this Ayah, Allah SWT warned Muhammad ﷺ to be careful of the hypocrites or the Munafiqoon. Allah SWT punishes them in a way by taking away their ability to think and see the truth.

A hypocrite is defined as someone who ditches the long-term gains for the short term gains. He is devious and defies with his heart and deeds. He changes his mind frivolously only in that which has a benefit for him. We can easily spot a Munafiq by his self-contradictory statements and behavior and we are advised to tread carefully when dealing with him consciously. We should pray to Allah SWT to cleanse our hearts from all kinds of hypocrisy, Ameen.

Allah SWT talks about the hypocrites as those who claim Iman by their tongues, but in their hearts they conceal disbelief. In Ayat number 9, Allah SWT warned Muhammad ﷺ to be careful of hypocrites who have accepted Islam only for worldly benefits. When it comes to making a sacrifice or changing themselves in the way of Islam they take a step backward. They assume that by doing this, they will mislead Allah SWT, or that they will get help from Allah. This is indicative of their total ignorance. Alas! How unfortunate are they!

The Prophet ﷺ sincerely desired guidance for them and was worried about them and tried his best to decorate their lives with Islam. Allah SWT says to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that it does not matter if Muhammad ﷺ had warned them or not, they would still have disbelieved in what you were sent with.Allah SWT tells the Prophet ﷺ to not feel sorry for the people who do not heed. It is not his fault and there will be no blame on him. It is their sheer bad luck that they didn’t pay attention.

Khatama Allahu means, ‘Allah has sealed.’ This Ayah means that Shaytan controlled them when they disobeyed the Prophet ﷺ. Therefore, Allah SWT sealed their hearts, their hearing, and their sight. They could neither see the guidance nor hear or comprehend it. Such was the unfortunate nature of their lives.

In the Ayats discussed here, the people of Iman believe in what Allah SWT sent them with, and in what the previous Messengers AS were sent with. They neither distinguish between them nor do they reject what they were sent with from Allah SWT. They believe in all of them because they all were for Hidayah given to other Prophets AS to provide the Message of Allah SWT.

Believers are those who are certain about the Day of Judgment when Allah SWT will ask them about all their good and bad deeds and consequently, Hell or Heaven will be decided. Our actions of Iman are only useful when we have belief in the Hereafter.

Allah SWT says in Ayat number 5 that those who believe in the Unseen, establish the prayer, spend from what Allah SWT has granted them, believe in what Allah SWT has revealed to the Messenger ﷺ and the Messengers before him AS, believe in the Hereafter with certainty, and prepare the necessary requirements for the Hereafter by performing good deeds and avoiding misdeeds, then they are on the right path.

Muflihoon is from Falah which implies success. Success always comes after hard work and effort and as a Muslim, we believe we will get Falah in the form of Jannah. If one does great effort in this world to get the love of Allah SWT and does this according to what is described in the Qur’an and proven by Sunnah, then he will get guidance and Falah on the Day of Judgment.

There are different ways in which we can acknowledge the great status of the final Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam), but in my personal and humble opinion, there is no greater praise of Allah’s Messenger than the Word of Allah itself. The way Allah describes His Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam), the way He Himself honors the Messenger, is unparalleled. No human bring can come close to praising Allah’s Mesenger, to honoring Allah’s Messenger, than Allah Himself. This lecture was given in Qatar on February 6th, 2015. Lees meer
